The blockbuster arc continues! Failsafe has taken his family, his allies, and now his city…Broken and beaten, Batman retreats to the last place on Earth he can hide…but nothing can truly hide from Failsafe! In the backup…Batman has prepared his mind for anything, or so he thought. We go back to his early days and a chilling case that led to…Failsafe!
Chip Zdarsky is a Canadian comic book artist and journalist. He was born Steve Murray but is known by his fan base as Chip Zdarsky, and occasionally Todd Diamond. He writes and illustrates an advice column called Extremely Bad Advice for the Canadian national newspaper National Post's The Ampersand, their pop culture section's online edition. He is also the creator of Prison Funnies and Monster Cops.
How is this storyline not a multi-comic cross-over event? It is very big in scale, involves many other DC heroes in addition to the Justice League. Gotham being taken over by Failsafe? Superman hurt, maybe dying, Batman out of action for 2 weeks? Yet limited to a single title?
It is hard to write stuff about this new Batman run by Zdarsky and Jimenez without starting with readers to stop everything and urgently start reading, especially if they are a fan of action or superheroes. The duo delivers another top notch issue with immaculate characterization and mesmerising action.
The story continues progressing at a breathtaking pace and we get cameo appearances from several Justice League members. The characterization of these characters was spot on by Zdarsky and his depiction of them and their dialogues feels natural and effortless. I really loved the banter despite the seriousness of the situation. We get a sense of how truly efficient and ruthless Failsafe is throughout his interactions with these characters.
The dialogue between Bruce and Tim when they separate due to the circumstances was my most favourite bit in this issue. It shines a light on the fatherly aspect of Batman and makes him feel more human than ever, and quite unlike the weapon that always strives to be.
Some may argue that this setup has been done before, in the iconic 'Tower of Babel' or various other instances where Batman's enemies have defeated his whole team and has taken over Gotham. But it is quite hard to not be influenced by past stories while writing such an iconic character with such long history. And Zdarsky's execution of the story and his handling of the characters makes this such a joy to read and very refreshing and modern despite obvious homages to past runs.
The art by Jimenez and Morey once again is spectacular. The action sequences are the true strength of the duo with their impactful use of art and colors, making the motions seem to reach a new level vividness. The costumes of these vast array of characters were also detailed quite thoroughly and I loved the facial expressions emphasising on the direness of the situation.
The new side story by Zdarsky and Leonardo Romero that begins here seems very promising. The story seems like it will delve more into the story of Batman of Zurr-En-Arrh. The drawing is very unique and adds a sense of old school nostalgia surrounding these iconic characters. The cliffhanger does make readers ponder about the future.
Another almost perfect issue that gets 4.5 out of 5 stars from me.
Best Batman in a very long time! God it was good! Every page of it! The story and the stack are high, the storyline is great, the action is there but they doesn't bet all on it. Perfect balance and just awesome!
I’m going to give this 4 stars even though I think the Failsafe story is starting to go downhill, but only because the backup redeemed it some in my opinion.
Fuck, this team is so good, this is such a fun story and I wasn't expecting it to get this big so quick! Also very cool to have Leo Romero on the back up, love his work.
So did I miss that this is a Justice League story? I thought the cover said Batman. I know comic covers don't tell you anything anymore, but if I wanted to read about all these other super powered superheroes, I'd read a Justice League comic. Or something else. Batman is here just to get his ass kicked, over and over. But wait, everyone else gets bashed around, too! I feel like it's supposed to make this Failsafe robot seem invincible and scary, but to me it's just making the heroes all seem even more lame than I already think they are. This arc is starting to feel like the true inspiration for James Gunn's Superman. Introduce a bunch of other characters to distract from the fact that there's barely a story, never mind a reason for your hero to do nothing but get his ass handed to him.
You don't even get to see Failsafe's crowning moment, where it actually takes over Gotham. Instead, that's reduced to dialogue told to Batman by yet another character I don't give a shit about, Aquaman!
I don't know. Maybe I'm being too picky. I just... can't bring myself to care about much of this. But I paid $5.99 each for all the awesome variant covers, so...
I actually kinda liked the backup story. Leonardo Romero's art is terrific. It's like the old Super Friends show, which is the only context that this Zur-En-Arrh Batman actually looks good in. I'm not sure what to make of the story itself, but I'm intrigued. Really not sure what to make of the last page of it. Guess we'll see.
A great cast fills out the pages with remarkable action. The ending was solid and builds the drama for what's to come. The side story was a bit difficult to follow but was better than most side stories. This run is still top notch.
I enjoy it, yes, but my main problem so far is that it feels unfocused. And when it doesn't feel unfocused, I feel like I skipped five issues while I read this one. It's enjoyable, though, can't deny that.
Ottimi personaggi, una selezione di eroi della JLA scritti veramente bene, un numero corale pieno di fiducia e di decisioni forti da supereroi. Una delle migliori uscite mensili nel panorama comics americano
Day 287: This Zdarsky/Jimenez run has been quite good. Not counting the backup into this rating as it would drag it down. I’m glad they didn’t try to crossover this story. So tired of missing out but I’m not going to read other titles.
I liked this a lot more than the previous issue. Still feels a bit weird that this is the opening arc of a run rather than an endpoint though. Will have to see where it leads
