The two-part, fifth edition of Advanced Organic Chemistry has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. The material has been updated to reflect advances in the field since the previous edition, especially in computational chemistry. Part A covers fundamental structural topics and basic mechanistic types. It can stand-alone; together, with Part Reaction and Synthesis, the two volumes provide a comprehensive foundation for the study in organic chemistry. Companion websites provide digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity for students and exercise solutions for instructors.
It is very comprehensive and has thousands of examples, many of whose mechanisms my friends and I worked out on our own so that we'd gain confidence in the process. Also, we followed the procedure given in this book for the synthesis of Z-Jasmone, Juvabione etc But essentially, this is advanced and we mainly used it as a reference book.
As a science major, I used chemistry on a daily basis. This book is exactly what it states it is: advanced. Definitely not a beginner's best friend, but it does give a challenge to the rest of us.
