Our senior year in college was supposed to go out with a bang, and it did, just not the way we’d expected.

Liliana Brambilla
If I could freeze time, I would.

The university my Mafia sisters and I attend is the one place I can get away and feel some sense of freedom—and escape from my father’s control and soon-to-be-announced, unwanted arranged marriage. If I could run away from my future, I would, and I’m not the only one.

Sofia La Rosa
I’ve loved Enzo Vitale all my life.

At one point, he was mine, and I was his. It was an allusion we were blissfully wrapped in. That bubble shattered even before I graduated from high school. The secrets scattered through our past were now like forgotten landmines ready to explode. He still considers me his, and in my heart, I will always be. For his sake, I need to keep him at arm’s length. Otherwise, I run the risk of losing him for good.

Emiliana Vitale
He’s the only man whose touch I crave.

I fell in love with Stefano Rossi before my life imploded, and I was taken from those I love. But our love is forbidden by his ruthless father and discouraged by my family. What they don’t understand is we’re both broken, and only together are we whole.

Marissa Rossi
My life is not my own, but neither are my siblings.

For the moment, I’m free, despite the noose around my neck in the form of an arranged marriage that will happen in a few weeks. That’ll be then, not right now. I still have time, even if it’s limited, to paint to my heart’s content and party all night long. I know the clock is ticking, so I’ll take every advantage of this small window—my last few weeks as a college student rooming with my best girlfriends—and live my life to the fullest.

We were born Mafia princesses, but we might as well be prisoners. As our college years draw to a close, we each have a fate we’re trying to escape. The question is, who will conquer the destiny laid before us or merely survive—and who will not?

I love this author!!! She amazes me every book of hers I pick up.
These mafia princess’s proved how fierce and determined they were. Love for each other and love for their men. This novella takes a glance at the other side of things and shows hell hath no fury like a fierce mafia princess. Such a great read and perfect for an intro to the series

OMG I am obsessed by this series and thought it could not get any better, well I was wrong. This book is the prequel to the night of Marissa's death and what went down, the only drawback this is too short and leaves you hanging.

This introduces the Princesses into the world and is written with the same intrigue and twists as all the books in this series. The characters are the ones we love and cherish, and it is great to see the characters in a time of free-spirited woman and how the fibre's such strong friendship was founded.

I hope there is more in the series as I'm not sure I won't to say goodbye to the Five Families just yet,

Defiant Princess (Mafia Elite Series Prequel) by Amy McKinley - Review by Jessica Stone

This book was a lot of fun to read! I'm very into mafia romances, but I've yet to read one not only told from a mafia daughters point of view but also MULTIPLE MD's views.

These are some lovely princesses with a whole lot of personality! What would you expect from a mafia princess though, especially when their lives are all anything but their own.

Each girl has and individual story to be told that weaves into the others, these women are learning how to navigate wanting their freedom to love how an whom they choose, knowing their entire lives that it will never be their choice. All on their last leg of freedom it seems, with impending arranged marriages and familial obligations these girls are ready to do whatever it takes to feel some sort of control, wether it be in the love department or something as simple as one's passion.

I did not go into this book knowing that it was prequel to a series I've been dying to read in its entirety, which is sooooo awesome. I've only read one other book from this author, and in the Mafia Elite series but I absolutely loved it so I'm now EVEN more excited to read more in this series. I did read some spoilers looking into this series more, that ruined some surprise coming in the other novels but helped me get more excited to continue reading this authors works. She drops some bombs, expect the unexpected.

I feel like this book COULD be read on its own, but once you read it you'll be aching for more mafia drama. Im hoping the author puts out more material from the point of view of these women beside the mafia men. Fingers crossed!

Mafia Elite series is one of my favorites, and just keeps making the characters better known and more beloved to us. This is a standalone book, but a prequal to the series. The heads of the Five Families are all still ruling with an iron fist, the sons have all graduated college and were leading lives as well as performing their duties as the next in line to their mafia families. The daughters are seniors in college, enjoying their last vestiges of freedom before being married off via contract or taken back home to be folded back into and controlled by their fathers or new husbands.

This book takes place after Emiliana had been kidnapped and rescued and Camilla had been married off to the Russian Bratva, situations that are mentioned throughout the series. It leads up to another tragedy mentioned throughout the series.

As the last 3.5 years of college has gone by, Lil, Sofia, Em and Marissa have grown very close. No one can understand them and their lives the way they understand each other. They've grown as close as sisters, so as their college careers come to an end, and they head back to being under their fathers thumbs, they're all a bit anxious.

The princesses are all daydreaming of being with someone they love, instead of someone they're promised to. Sofia longs for Enzo, and he her. In order to protect him, she will push him away. Em and Stefano both broken from terrible past experiences, but together they make one another complete. Too bad no one else agrees, and his father outright refuses it. Marissa is promised to Tony, and he is now getting very possessive. While making a decision to try to make things work with her arranged marriage to him, she is anxious to speak to someone in the Bratva to see if her sister Camilla is even still alive. Lil is daydreaming of running away to stay out of her fathers clutches. Will anyone have their daydreams and wishes of true love come true?

Defiant Princess: A Mafia Elite Series Prequel by Amy McKinley

This isn't the first book I've read by the author. I've read every single book in the Mafia Elite Series. Defiant Princess is the very first book in the series. I loved this book and can't wait for more.

Liliana is the daughter of the five families. When she finds out that her friend is engaged to someone they can't trust she gets a sick feeling in her stomach. Can she and her other friends save Marissa? The quote I chose for Liliana is: “That might change. At least you have friendship to use as a base.”

Emiliana is doing a little better after everything, but she doesn't feel right about any of this. Her and her friends want to save Marissa but they don't know how. It doesn't help that she's got a brother who won't leave her alone. The quote I chose for Emiliana is: “I don’t know. Maybe she feels left out? They go out together to parties and clubs all the time.”

Sofia knows Emiliana needs space but she doesn't need her brother always around. She is also worried about Marissa and can't seem to figure out what to do. The quote I chose for Sofia is: “Em needs space. She’s doing well, and the helicopter-brother routine isn’t helping her.”

Marissa is engaged to someone she doesn't want to be. She wants to finish school and can't. Things aren't going to go well at all. The quote I chose for Marissa is: “Am I still dreaming? Are those croissants? Just out of the oven?”

Highly recommended for Mafia Romance Suspense lovers.

If, like me, you’ve read the other books in this series, definitely give this one a go. The other books in the series are great but this one just sets them up to be so much better.

This series introduces you to the daughters of the five families. The ones destined to not live out their own destiny but instead to be a pawn to elevate their own family in terms of money or power. This book also addresses the tragic event we hear about in the books but is never fully explained, the death of Marissa. It is so nice to see where their strength comes from and the love they have for one another as they try to figure out their own lives and not just as pawns.

This one will take anyone back to their college days and the friendships we make that pull us through. This prequel, though short, definitely sets up the mafia elite series. Though it is a standalone book, reading this before all the other books in the series would have made way more sense and the progression of the strong female characters and why they are the way they are makes so much more sense. Definitely give this one a read even if you’ve read the other books because it does close a lot of loose ends and answers some of those questions about why things happen. If you haven’t read the mafia elite series but found yourself here, then definitely read this book and then the elite series you won’t regret it.

Defiant Princess
By: Amy McKinley

This book is the prequel to the Mafia Elite series, but it does stand alone by itself. It is the story of college aged girls that are the daughters of the five families. This is where their story begins. They are all princesses to high up mafia families. Their fathers will do anything to protect them. In some of these cases, their lives are completely out of their control.
LIlianna loves college. She is surrounded by other girls who understand and can relate to the life she lives. Her father is super controlling and all she wants to do is taste freedom. However, her father is so concerned for her that she even has a marriage coming up. One that she has not planned, but has been planned for her. She wants to run away, begin a new life away from her father’s control. But will that be possible?
Sofia is absolutely in love with Enzo. She was the one that he wanted and the same goes for him. However, now even though she loves him, she cannot be with him. She would do anything for him, including walk away from him. She needs to keep him safe, and to do that she has to walk away.
Emiliana is also in love. Stefano is her one true love. She would do anything to be back with him. However, they both live under the control of their fathers. Both fathers are incredibly controlling. They have forbidden them from being together. However, they need to be together. They are meant for each other. If only they could convince the rest of the world that what they need is to be together.
Marissa can relate to the arranged marriage that Lilianna is being forced into. She is in the same position. She is determine to make the best of the time she has before she is traded away in the form of this marriage.
These girls are tasting freedom for the first time. And they don’t want to give it up. The question is how far will they go to get their freedom. Are they willing to risk everything to keep their freedom. Or will they submit to to the will of their families.
I loved this story. These girls were written as incredibly complex characters. Their complex situations just dripped off every page. I’m glad to know that there is more to be written about these girls as I want to see how each of their stories develop. I was left wanting more and that’s a good thing, given that there is more to read. I will be starting the Mafia Elite Series right now!

Being born into a Mafia family means life is never normal. College was supposed to be a period of time where Liliana, Sofia, Emiliana, and Marissa get to at least pretend to be closer to normal than how they had grown up. Senior year has approached and despite it being their last year of freedom, their families start making plans for their future. Each of them is faced with the inevitable prospect of marrying someone they don't love or even like. When a Russian mafia member is spotted watching the girls' house, it can only mean their time is running short. As they each face their fears and cling to the last vestiges of their normal-ish lives, can they make it through together? Or will they succumb to the mafia way and be punished for unknowingly putting themselves in harm's way?

This prequel answered a lot of questions from the Mafia Elite series that were always mentioned but never truly explained in depth. I enjoyed getting to see the girls in their "formative" years before their lives were not really their own. Each perspective brings a different view into how the girls really became a unit that would do anything for each other. My heart broke a little for each of them as they had to go through yet another tragedy to realize that their lives really are not their own and that they are just pawns in the greater scheme of the Mafia life.

This entire series was absolutely amazing. I got my daughter hooked on it. I loved the variety of characters. I will miss all the characters as the author made them come alive in every book. It was like you were part of the family as they went through life in the mafia.

This prequel was about Marissa who we have heard about in every book but did not know her exact story. We all know she died and that the ladies were all close like sisters. I wish this prequel had been longer as I was not ready to say goodbye to these characters yet. Here’s hoping we all get to read about them again.

To the Author: This series has been an amazing ride. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the mafia books. Bravo.

This is the book is the starting of the Mafia Elite Series and everything I didn't know I was missing. It is a book that you won't be able to put down. It shows the longing of wanting what the main females in the series can not have. It shows the softer side of all of them before everything happens. The innocent and not so innocent lives that they lead with hopes of something better than what has always been done.
This books gives, so many aspects that I didn't know I needed that make the whole series come together. Without giving away important details just know that when you read this book if you haven't read the whole series yet, this is the best one to start with because you will have so much more knowledge to move forward in the series. If you have already read the series you will love being able to connect even more to the characters in this series. It will give you so much more background and really let you feel what they are feeling.
This book had me hooked from the beginning and left me wanting even more. I feel greedy wanting more but this series is one of the best I have read in a long time. You will not be disappointed and will love the story lines of each female character. It is a squick read and a major page turner. You will definitely fall in love with the characters in this book if you aren't already in love with them.

Liliana, Sofia, Marissa, and Emiliana belong to 4 royal mafia families. Under the strict power of their respective fathers each of the girls is used for the convenience of the business, marriage arrangements are made with other families even those who are part of the enemy, giving them the memories of growing together as the only source of warmth throughout the hardness of the destiny.

Within their luxury lives all of them have challenges to overcome: Marissa's engagement with Toni, who was a friend and suddenly becomes a guard who seeks power in his new position. Sofia,in love with Enzo, but after a traumatic experience has lost all of his shine and she can not seem to get it back to him, thinking that theirs was not a love meant to be. Emiliana, who is marked with internal scars after being abducted and now can't seem to be able to be part of a normal society, living always on high alert and in constant fear for her surroundings. Liliana has yet to see what her father has saved for her future, she has a seat in first row into her friends fated goals.

A multi-narrative story full of action, suspense, hidden love, character development that empowers the forces of each girl to its fullest, even when at the same time they deal with their fears and limitations.

Defiant Princess is the prequel for the Mafia Elite series by Amy McKinley. OMG! This book, and this series!!! Colour me addicted!!! Riveting must reads!!!
This prequel might have come at the end of the series, but I love how, even though it is set in the past, it ties the series up in a nice big bow. Ms. McKinley has given us backstory to fully round-out the stories we have already read- and made me even more addicted to her writing. I Can. Not. Wait. to see where we go from here- and am eagerly awaiting the release of ‘Borrowed Time’ which is the first book in the new Verretti Crime Family series. We have encountered the Verretti’s in the last three books of the Mafia Elite series- in ‘Ruthless Heir’ (Book #5), ‘Collateral Damage’ (Book #6), and ‘Rivals’ (Book #7). If Mafia Elite is anything to go by, the upcoming series is set to be incredibly exciting!
Seriously, if you love mafia romance, with a big helping of tension and suspense, then you definitely won’t want to miss this exciting series!
Happy Reading!

Thank you, Amy McKinley!

I love the Mafia Elite series, so this prequel seemed like a great chance to get more of the characters and writing that I enjoy so much! I feel like Defiant Princess is more intended as an entry point into the series for new readers than an extension of the story for those who have already read the series. Most of the backstory won’t be new if you’re caught up on the series, and there won’t be many surprises. But it’s still fun to get to see the characters when they’re a bit younger!
So I’d say this is for readers who think you might enjoy the series and would like a taster before you commit. It’s a chance to get to know loads of the main characters and some of their key motivators in a shorter novella before you jump into the series. With the Mafia Elite series now available in two convenient box sets, this could be a great way to sample the series before getting the first set.
This book gets four stars from me. I’d recommend it to newcomers to the series who want to see if it’s for them – if you like romance, action and intrigue I’m sure you’ll love Mafia Elite!

I did not go into this book knowing that it was prequel to a series that I actually have on my “to read” list! I've had this author, Amy McKinley, on my list of authors to explore. Let me tell you: she does NOT disappoint! At all!!!
I’ve recently begun exploring more books based upon mafia settings for they truly engulf me. Now, I’ve found an entire new series to dive into.
One thing I loved about this story was how the author allows you to get to see the female MCs during their last year of college as well as observe how their lives transpire following college. As mafia princesses, this is a lifestyle born into vs other mafia books I’ve read that focused on a male dominated desire to belong regardless of family, marriage, chosen, etc.
This author provides a well written story with a strong storyline from a perspective that I’ve honestly never considered. It was an exhilarating yet refreshing difference. I will definitely be starting the remainder of the Mafia Elite series soon and recommend this book to my fellow book fiends.

Once again Amy McKinley has outdone herself with this short novella. Defiant Princess follows the Five Families daughters: Liliana, Sofia, Emiliana, and Marissa. This is a prequel to the Mafia Elite series; however, you can read it at any time during your journey with that series. This was a super fast read, but I really appreciate that McKinley provides the insight that she does into Marissa's murder as it is a catalyst that drives a lot of what happens in the series, especially the first book. I also like that she included snippets of romance between a few of the couples we get to see later on and it's just nice to know that their romances have been going on for way longer than we thought. Even though it was an insanely quick read, McKinley covered all of her basis and allowed for character development as well as plot development. As I said before, it doesn't matter when you read this novella, but I highly recommend that you do as it does add integral details to the story.

I love this author literally for everything they write and create. I am never disappointed by anything that they bring to life! This book was a gripping read, that held my interest with ease! Great read!

I loved the series the author has written prior, and I am so happy that they started this one. I love the characters, the girls were strong minded, who have their life set up for them as if on a map, but should they not be able to choose their own destiny? I loved how realistic the story was , the girls in college abiding to the rules laid before them. Loved Sofia to make clear! The story was passionate, deep, dark at times, and even devastating in moments. Could not put it down! Truly a tight and gripping read! Loved it!

I can never pass up a book by this amazing author! I love how they grip the reader with their talent and strong characters. Needless to say, I highly recommend this must read book and author!

Did I click the buy now button without needing any more details other than knowing the author's name? Sure did! I have more than loved all of the works I have ever read by Amy McKinley. Let me tell ya this book did not let me down. Another amazing story by Amy.

This novella takes place as a stage opener for the series The Mafia Elite. It gives a look into the younger lives of the mafia Princesses that we follow during the main series. It is full of adventures, danger, intrigue, drama, and mystery. Each of the characters draws you in with a way to relate to them in one way or another. Putting the book down is nearly impossible. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.

Don't wait to pick up this prequel to The Mafia Elite series. While you are at it, have the entire main series ready to go next. I read the prequel after the original series, but it didn't affect any enjoyment from it.

Defiant Princess is a short story that is a prequel to the Mafia Elite series. I am obsessed with this series and was so excited to read it. It gave us a little back story on the girls of the Five Families, though I wish there was more info given on Marissa. I still want to know what happened!! So please, I beg, at some point let us know who dun it!! This book takes place before any of their marriages. They are enjoying their last year in college, dreading the future their fathers have chosen for them. I enjoy seeing the love and protection from their brothers. And how close they all are to each other.
While I love this series and enjoyed the book, I don't feel like it added much to the series. Reading this AFTER all the other books, I feel like there wasn't much new info provided. I think it would be more enjoyable as a true prequel to hook a new reader on the series. But, as I said, I am obsessed with this series, so I still recommend it and look forward to more.

I was sad when I thought this series ended, but the author strikes again. The Mafia Elite Series is revived by the Defiant Princess prequel!
Yes I love this series!
Yes, all the books are well written!
Yes I’ve read them all!
And absolutely Yes you should too!
If this is the first time you’re coming across a book in this series, you’re in luck because it’s the beginning. What happens in Defiant Princess comes up a lot through No Way Out so it’s a perfect place to start.
I wonder why it wasn’t titled Princesses because it’s told from the point of view of all 4 mafia princesses, Liliana, Emiliana, Sofia, and Marissa. When tragedy strikes the five mafia families of Chicago stick together. Which is demonstrated beautifully is this short novel prequel.
Five Families that you will fall in love with throughout this series if you haven’t read it before. If you have, we have another book to read! It’s not over yet!

This story is a prequel to the Mafia Elite Series and it was so fun! I absolutely love all the women in this series so them having a book just focused on them in their college days was a delight. We get to see them just being best friends and comforting each other and dealing with the realities of being Mafia Princesses outside of the ways we do in their own books which showcase the romances they end up in. This story is really all about the night before Marissa’s murder which was a big point in the series so seeing Marissa from a different side before her death was very interesting. I love Amy’s writing and I feel everything the girls do so this was an emotional read for me thinking of them anticipating their futures when i already know how its gonna end up i just wanted to hug them all and say its gonna be okay. If you have read any of the Mafia Elite books this is a must-read. It is fast and short but well worth it.

This is the prequel to one of my favourite books series and I just loved getting to spend more time with these characters. I was gutted when the Mafia Elite series came to an end, so was excited to find out that there was going to be a prequel.
With it being a prequel, you know how it’s going to end but I was more interested in going through the journey with these characters who I have absolutely loved reading about. I can say it certainly did not disappoint. I’d love to read even more about this fantastic group of people.
This book takes you through the tragic events of Marissa Rossi. This even is discussed in great detail in the series but you don’t get the full story of what really went down at it was fantastic to finally have this part of the story told in full.
I really hope that we are going to get more from this amazing group of characters as I’m not ready to say goodbye to them yet.

An amazing start to a series favorite of mine. Amy McKinley has the ability to create an interesting story full of characters you can't help to love.
Defiant Princess is a Mafia Elite Prequel that focuses on the females in the five families. Marissa
is officially engaged to Tony Caruso. Emiliana has been rescued from a human trafficking ring
that presumably claimed the life of Elena. Lilliana isn’t promised to anybody yet and is waiting
for her father to destroy her. Sofia has a crush on Enzo but refuses to act on her feelings. Ivan
from the Russian Bratva has appeared and Marissa wants to ask him about her sister Camila.
The group tries to convince her to stay away from him, especially since Tony was known for being
possessive and would act violently out of jealousy.
To avoid spoilers, I can only state that Marissa's decisions will affect all of the girls. What does she do?

The Mafia Elite is one of my all-time favourite series so when I saw this book by Amy, I grabbed it and dove right in. This book tells the story of the Mafia Princesses who had the unfortunate fate of being born into elite Mafia families. Where their lives are already mapped out before them, where secrets are paved, and revenge is ripe and arranged marriages are given and ruthlessness is the norm.

The prequel is captivating, and it is a great insight into the lives of characters when they were younger that we have seen throughout the Mafia Elite series. This intriguing and gripping new book is full of drama, mystery, intrigue and danger, with plenty of heart pounding moments. I was on the edge of my seat whilst devouring page after page of this engrossing read.

Now that I have devoured the prequel I am going to go back and reread the amazing original series.

I really love this author and I have read many of her books and this one was just another great story. I like how she brings in the drama and mixes a bit of romance. The stories are so full of action and drama that you get swept into them. The characters are always well written with enough back story to support. I love how the books blend well into the next and I cannot wait to read more from this author. I cannot put these books down as I am at the edge of my seat wanting to see what will happen next.

The chemistry between the characters is really good. I am well impressed how the author builds the world around the characters. I really felt as though I was right in the midst of the action. Mafia romances are one of my top 10 favorite genres. I will definitely be reading more of this series. I cannot wait!

I can’t believe this author found a way for me to love these characters more than I already did. Had I read this first, I would find myself wanting to read more about these badass women. As it was, I couldn’t possibly not read about a character named after me!!! (Seriously, I know it wasn’t me but I can dream.)

This short, intense story allows a glimpse into the lives of the Mafia Princesses and why they are as strong as they are. These women are strong, loyal, intelligent, talented, and we can’t forget deadly. This is a beautiful origin story, a starting point!

If you haven’t started this series, read this now! Then, dive head first into the series. If you are already reading the series, STOP!! Read this immediately. Don’t delay. Then, pick up where you left off. It will make sense. Trust me. You need to read this book.

5 Stars!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I love this series with all of my heart and soul and this prequel was fabulous!!!! I would highly recommend reading the Mafia Elite Series in order that you get to know each and every character from the 5 families..then this prequel will take you to the "before". As I was roped in I love that the strong and mighty women are the stars of this book.

This story takes place in the eyes of Sofia, Liliana, Emiliana and Marissa..and winter break from college is coming and the women want to have a good time with a bit of freedom but what I finally get is also what happens that one fateful date to Marissa.....can I say I need more!!

I love how this author ties in her story and includes every character and the full circle of the
5 families...I am definitely not ready to say goodbye to this series....I am hopeful for more!!

I almost wish I read this before I started the series because it gives a lot of information and to why things are the way they are and how they got there.

This is a great novella that gives plenty of insight to 4 of the most amazing women I have ever read about. They are the Mafia Princesses. They are all In college together sharing a place, they have guards, everyone knows they are off limits / untouchable. Marissa has a mind of her own and doesn’t listen to the other girls or other guys who want to keep her self.
I absolutely love all these characters but Sofia and Enzo are my favorites!!!
Such an amazing series, you definitely must Run…don’t walk…RUN and get your hands on this entire series. You will not be disappointed.

I loved reading this book. This is the prequel to the Mafia Elite series and what a great start it is. This is an author that I have loved reading from the first book I picked up. I highly suggest reading this series to see what happens to these characters after this book. This is a well written story about Mafia princesses. They have a destiny but it is what they want or is there something more? I had no problem connecting with the characters as they pulled me into their story. They have great growth throughout as well as the plot that made it easy to read. This is a story that you don't want to miss for sure. It is a fast paced, hard to put down story that I read in one sitting. I highly recommend this book and this author.
