I'm still in awe. ... How can Jennifer Sucevic do this - every - single - time???? It would be annoying if it weren't so good! Here we've got all of our favorite tropes: forbidden romance, age gap, broody guy, sunshine heroine, sports college romance... do I need to tick more off the list? I think not.
I have been impatiently awaiting this book since I read "Heartless" a few months back, and that's where we met Mason. Even though we understood then (in "Heartless") why Mason did what he did in regards to his brother Hunter and his girlfriend, Sucevic kind of made us dislike him - he did the bad thing, hence he was kind-of-sort-of the bad guy. But, at the same time, we felt for Mason. The circumstances of the past years were hard for him and Hunter, and Mason stepped up and did what he had to do - and in that spirit, the actions he took in "Heartless," he truly felt were in his brother's best interest. Now, these things are important because they explain who Mason is, and why he is why is like he is. But even though a lot of things happened in "Heartless," you don't have to read it to understand what is happening in "Shameless," which can totally be read as a standalone.
Now, all of that said - enter "Shameless" which takes place about two years after "Heartless" ends. Mason is getting his second shot - he's no longer having to worry about Hunter and essentially devote his life to his brother and his success. It's Mason's turn to think about himself, the dreams he once had, and what he can ... not salvage, but create a new life trajectory and sort of create a new life goal and dreams. As this starts out, our hearts are immediately bleeding for him though. None of this is easy - all of the sympathy we had for him in "Heartless" multiplies by... a lot! This poor guy! And yet, he's so damn sexy. Broody. Mysterious. Older. Confident. Bossy. A man... Mmm, yum. Enter Poppy. Oh, Poppy - how we immediately love her! She's 7 years younger than Mason, but the moment they meet - fireworks. The energy between them is combustible and we feel like such little voyeurs watching their interactions - and we love every single moment of it. And I won't discuss more of the story other than that because it is just too electric - too dynamic - too sexy - too heart-wrenching. The give-and-take, the attraction, the emotions ... giving any of that away will just take away from a reader IMHO. No spoiler alerts here!
But what I will say is, for me, this book tugged on my emotions so fiercely. Sucevic makes our hearts bleed for Mason. We root for him so hard - long ago forgiving him for his actions toward Hunter - we want him to finally get a chance at redeeming himself, to live for himself. And we desperately, desperately want a reconciliation between him and Hunter. We are almost begging for it! The situation there broke my heart! It's almost too hard to read... I'm not crying. You're crying!
And while Mason is dealing with all of the changes in his life, realizing that he can live for himself and that he can possibly attain some of his life's dreams - he's got a lot of inner turmoil pulling at him. And he doesn't even realize what he's missing until he meets Poppy. She's smart and sweet and sexy in a sunshine-y kind of way. Perfect for his grumpy broodiness! At moments you almost want to tell him, and at times her, to get over themselves because it's so clear to us how perfect they are. Oh, it's such sweet agony to watch.. and I say watch rather than read because Sucevic's writing is so vivid. And that's why I started this by saying that she did it again. The woman can do no wrong! Her books and stories are so phenomenal... just... more! I want more!
