I read this book feeling skeptical, thinking it probably wouldn’t change anything or tell me anything I didn’t already know but I was wrong, not something I like to admit. I actually found myself in these pages, I found myself struggling with parts of almost every type of “block” I found myself in the examples Marcy shares, most especially when she discusses making choices with her family and work balance. My children also always come first but Marcy’s tips are on my short list of things to try immediately. I believe there is something in this book for everyone that is suffering not only from writer’s block but from personal stagnation. Take a chance and buy this book, you might even find yourself in the pages too!!
Much more than a book on writing, Overcoming Writer’s Block is a book on the “psychology of creative blocks” that will help the reader understand how he or she works and learns best. The book explores common reasons people get stuck, delves into the brain science behind these reasons, and offers practical ways to move forward.
When I started reading this book I didn't even realize that I had writer's block. But Marcy immediately described the different types and I realized I had experienced more than one! I especially found all the tips to be instantly applicable. This book is a keeper. I will be rereading it and applying the tips far into the future Thank you for writing this book, Marcy! I plan to share these concepts with my daughter because they can apply to Life as well as writing. If you've ever felt stuck, possibly even self-sabotaged, then you must read this book! It's highly researched and presented in a conversational, cozy way.
Too many individuals offer the advice "writer's block isn't real - just plow through it", but Marcy takes a different approach. She re-frames the problem in such a way that's it's not about an inability to come up with words, but rather a whole host of issues that just keep you from writing in the first place. The problems she outlines are entirely relatable, and more importantly I believe that many of them can be applied to whatever it is you might be trying to pursue, even if it's not writing. If you are currently dealing with writer's block and have not found anything to be helpful in breaking down the issue yet, this book is definitely worth the read.
