Fake Dating the Player

Rate this book
My cocky next-door neighbor is the most infuriating person in the world--so why did I just hookup with him?

Although we pretty much grew up together, we've never managed to get along.

I guess he's good-looking, with his perfect hair, amazing hockey-player physique, and boyish smile... if you're into that.

Which I’m totally not.

Our moms are besties, and they’ve been planning our engagement since we were little kids.

I'm *so* over it...

He’s an arrogant athlete that goes through girls like Kleenex, and his teammates joke that he’s incapable of a relationship.

My roommate comes up with the perfect plan: fake date each other to get our parents and his team off our backs.

I guess we do have something in common: wanting to prove everyone else wrong.

Now everyone is talking about my post-game congratulatory kiss instead of his game-winning goal.

We're fooling everyone on campus plus our families, and I gotta say, I don't hate it.

Turns out the hardest part isn’t faking feelings for him...

It’s trying to hide my true ones.

Josie and Nathan have known each other all their lives and somehow their relatives have got a weird obsession that they would make a great couple, although lately the two haven't got along very well. However, once they hook up almost accidentally, as a dare, and find out they do have some serious sexual chemistry. What with all the bickering, neither of them believes it's going anywhere but they agree to fake date in the hopes of getting their relatives off their case. I enjoyed reading this story. It is not a dark, angsty book as such but there are themes of grief as Josie has lost her parents and Nathan his best friend. Another theme is sibling rivalry.

I really like the book. This is a well written story and a book you’ll easily devour in a day. The interaction and chemistry between the characters is wonderful. It is a fun, sweet romance, but it also shows love between family and best friends.

Standalone with HEA told from dual POV.

No cliffhanger. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

DNF at 40%

It wasn’t bad, but I just couldn’t get into it.
Pro: characters seemed cool, had some depth for how far I got.
Plot was okay. Could have been stronger.

Cons:
Them doing it before they made the pact. It took all the fun out of it and was too fast. He was literally upset from thinking about his dead friend then they did it. Kinda weird vibes.
They weren’t exactly enemies, just didn’t like each other.
Them doing it a few pages in, really killed the vibe. What was the point of reading it if they’d already done it??? Boring.

Others might like it but wasn’t that great.

Friends of her aunt and uncle, are throwing their annual, end-of-summer party. The New England weather couldn’t be more perfect, at sixty-five degrees, this means summer is over. Except, Josie Turner is trapped in her, own private he//. She is stuck listening, to another discussion between her, Aunt Lydia and, Mrs. Alexander who can’t seem, to get it through their heads they may live next door, to one another, and once played together that she and Nathan, are not a couple meant, for love.

They are going, to be living in the same building with her cousin, Julie, her RA, on the same floor. She is not her bestie either. Thank goodness, Nathan is a junior and Josie is a sophomore meaning, they are housed on opposite ends of the building. Pleasing her, but for different reasons, then the elders. They see it, as them being able, to connect more. Josie feels bad disappointing her, Aunt Lydia, and, her Uncle Colin because they raised, her after her mom died, in a car accident. She knows they love, Nathan, but he is not who they think he is.

They were friends until, eighth grade when sports, new friends, and girls became more important. Leaving no room, for her. Now, she is lucky if, she gets a civil hello. She admittedly has resentment, from his treatment. When he shows up at, the B-B-Q he is sending barbs, of course. Until his deceased best friend’s parents arrive. Her heart goes out, to him. Josie can tell it, shakes him. She is ready, to leave and goes, to her aunt, to tell her she’s taking an Uber home. Explaining she’s tired, from packing. And, she still has more, to do.

That’s when, Nathan’s mom volunteer’s him since, he’s leaving, too. He just nods. The drive home is quiet, and when they arrive, she gets out, heading home. He notices her phone and takes it over. He rings the bell, over and over knowing the effect it, will get. She opens the door on, a snarky note. Surprising them both, Nathan starts, to flirt, and she doesn’t back down. She calls him on it. One kiss leads, to oh so much more. Just one little problem, he does the walk of shame, as her aunt and uncle, come walking in. Busted. Now the elders have something, to talk about and hope for.

The next day, at drop off, Josie, and her roommate, Heather does not notice the hockey team is, sitting at another table. While the two of them, are chatting away. It’s Nathan who keeps glancing over when one of, the guys calls him, on it. So, they challenge him, saying he could never be in any, relationship and maintain it. At the same time, a week later, Heather suggested that, Josie, and, Nate fake date. As much as she hates, to admit it’s sound advice, she hates it.

It starts stiff and shaky. Josie is mad at herself for allowing, Nate, to take the challenge on so, naturally and her, being the one having trouble relaxing. His teammates are harder, to convince them, and their families. It becomes a little more real for, Nate when he feels a tinge of, jealousy. By way of, Josie’s bio classmate. Nate sees him flirting with her, and Josie being her, didn’t notice.

I love this couple and their bantering. They may have old childhood hurts and issues, but, it doesn’t stop them from caring. From them being there for one another, even if it's with a little gruffiness or a little snark.

Fake Dating the Player is Josie and Nathan's story and it is both playful and filled with angst. Even though they grew up together they seemed to have an animosity toward each other but is that just covering up their true feelings? Their parents keep pushing them together and seem to know they would make the perfect match.

They attend the same college along with Josie's cousin Julie. Josie's lived with Julie at her aunt and uncle's house after her mom died. They don't get along at all and it's sad to see their lack of any type of relationship. I like the insight we're given for the reasons why.

Josie's roommate suggests she and Nathan get into a fake dating relationship so when they "break up" they can convince everyone they tried. When she approaches Nathan with the suggestion he's all in for reasons of his own. What starts out as a gag may be turning into something more. Josie and Nathan balance each other but definitely have trouble communicating until they finally get brave and confront their feelings.

A story rich with relationship troubles - real or not - and lots of twists and turns along with steamy moments. There is closure although the book ended abruptly. I liked that there were loose ends tied up on several relationship fronts along with the possibility of a happily ever after.

Ms. McKay writes sport romances with some heat and all her books have been enjoyable reads.

Josie was taken in by her aunt and uncle at age four after her mother was killed in an accident. They lived next door the Alexander's, and they had a son, Nathan that was a year older than Josie. The whole time the kids were growing up, they talked about what a cute couple Nathan and Josie made. When they got older, they insisted that was not going to happen even though they did end up going to the same college. Josie's roommate in college was planning on becoming a romance writer so she came up with a plan for them to fake date, then in a few months they could say they tried, but it did not work out. Nathan's friends were after him to actually have a girlfriend instead of one night stands. When Josie asked him about the fake dating, he was all in thinking it would solve both his problems. Will this or will this not solve their problems? It sure makes for some highly interesting reading. Lots of possessive sparks start to fly with other unresolved issues, made it was all one big gamble. A beautifully written story of continuing on with your life after the loss of your bestfriend as in Nathan's case, when Jackson was killed their senior year of high school. The permanent hole his passing left in Nathan's life. Even with Josie being so young when she lost her second parent, she could still relate to Nathan's loss of Jackson. An exciting read that will keep you on the edge of your chair waiting to see what happens next.

Fake Dating the Player by Clarissa McKay tells the story of Nathan Alexander and Josie Turner, next door neighbors who started out as friends but grew apart as they grew older. Josie’s parents died and she was raised by her aunt and uncle from a very young age with their daughter Julie who was a year older. Nathan’s parents were best friends with Josie’s aunt and uncle and the four adults were always trying to force their children to be friendly with one another, hoping things would blossom between Nathan and one of the two girls. This went on right through college when one day Nathan gave Josie a ride home from a party and the two of them sort of fell into bed together. They both felt the earth move but found it best to pretend otherwise with one another. Josie was getting tired of always having everyone around them harp on her to get together with Nathan so she and Nathan decided to pretend they were dating to get them off their backs. This worked well for Nathan who was constantly being teased by his teammates for not being able to sustain a relationship with a woman. As they continued to pretend, they were required to touch and kiss one another more and more and to sustain a certain intimacy with one another. That obviously led to…yup, no more of this delightful and sizzling hot story. Get this novel!

Fake Dating the Player is the first book in a new series. This is the authors first Hockey Romance. When I first found out she was writing a Hockey Romance I got so excited as Hockey Romance is my fav Sports Romance books.

Josie and Nathan were childhood friends and neighbors who not only drifted apart as they got older but started being intolerant of each other. Their families keep trying to push them together and want Josie and Nathan to fall in love.

I loved the main characters as well as the secondary characters. I think the secondary characters bring even more depth to the story. I also spent most of this book hoping secondary characters Luke and Heather got together.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Sports Romances, Hockey Romances, Fake Dating Romances, College Romance or Enemies-to-Lovers. I can't wait for book two.

I received an advance copy of this book. I am voluntarily giving my honest review, and I plan to buy this book when it becomes available.

Nathan and Josie grew up together along with her cousin Julie. They were all friends, until they grew up and grew apart. For years, they've really been frenemies - they could talk and act friendly when needed, but they didn't really like each other. One night right before they return to school, Nathan takes Josie home and they have sex. When it's done, they are both determined it's never going to happen again. But then Josie's roommate suggests a solution that might get both their families and his friends off their backs -- they should fake date. Their families have been determined that they are "fated" since they were children. Will they be able to pull off fake dating or will no one be fooled? What happens when they both start to have feelings that are not fake?

I loved both Nathan and Josie. Nathan is tough and funny and when he stops fighting with Josie, he's really pretty sweet. He thinks he doesn't know how to be a boyfriend, but he's pretty good at it. He softens some of her serious side. Josie is dedicated to her studies and being the best she can be. She's always trying to make everyone else happy, often to her detriment.

A Love Connection Written In The Stars -
Even though Josie and Nathan were neighbours growing up, they had detested each other since high school, as Josie was your typical goody two shoes nerd and Nathan was a jock. However, their families always tried to set them up in a relationship. They made a fake relationship pact to get their families off their back, but real feelings got involved after one too many kisses, which helped them finally acknowledge what their families already knew was destined to be.

I really enjoyed reading this fabulous story, with engaging banter and romance between the two characters that you won’t want to miss out on. The story will draw you in from the beginning and keep you turning the pages to see what happens next. Once you reach the end, you will realise it was a worthwhile reading experience.

Short

Ok we here we go. This was a good quick book. Not sure if the ending was rushed or if maybe the author got bored & wanted it to just end. Somehow her cousin just magically makes nice & is over it all? There's not really a whole lot of depth. Just 2 kids who thought to fake date to make their mom & aunt happy. Which of course you know ends up becoming real but it's like once one of them realized they had real feelings, boom over. I don't want to spoil who it was first. So they talk it out & she talks to him about how his treatment to his friend's parents was wrong, & lastly she talks to her cousin about her treatment towards her. Then everything is all happy go lucky. Just felt like maybe there should have been more. It's a good book & not a bad read, just not one to go all gah gah over. On to the next.

Josie lived with her aunt and uncle after her mom died in an accident. Nathan was the boy next door, and everyone thought they would be perfect together. When they ended up at the same college their families still thought they would be perfect together, so Josie came up with a plan with her roommate. That her and Nathan pretend to date and then end things so they can say they attempted to be together. Nathan agrees because his friends want him to be with one girl instead of the one-night stands, he keeps having. Will this turn into more than they planned for?

This is a great story that will draw you in from the first chapter. This is a well written and very entertaining story. Its a book that any book lover would enjoy.

Not Enough

Overall I liked the story but I felt like it was missing something. Like there wasn't enough to it.

For example you know the third act bad where you expect scenes that fully take you into the character emotions as they come to term with their feelings. Well those were basically covered in a couple of summary sentences instead of full scenes. And there are no declarations in this story.

There was definitely a good start here but it felt rushed. Secondary characters were flat on the page and indistinctive because not enough time was put into building them. There collage of moment where they realize how things have changed is not really a collage because there aren't enough shown moments to make one. The bones are there but honestly the story needs about double its length to give it the emotional depth for the subject material.

fake dating, hockey romance, enemies to lovers, sibling rivalry

Nathan and Josie's parents are bffs and have always wanted them to end up together. After a dare has them hooking up (so refreshing that this happened in college and the FL wasn't a virgin, I dunno, she was kinda giving those vibes off so was just nice she wasn't) they realize that they have a ton of sexual chemistry which they try to resist before finally realizing that they could just fake date to get their parents off their backs.

There's angst from loss of parents/bffs, but the drama is more realistic and not due to the couple's communication errors as much which was refreshing. I was surprised with how much I liked this book. It was sweet (but had some spice) and wasn't too over the top with some of the complications in the relationship.

Nate and Josie grew up together but couldn’t stand each other since the age of 11. Word sparring and cold glares whenever they had to be in the same room, which was often as they were neighbours. But their parents were always saying they were perfect for each other. The idea to fake date and then break up to get their parents off their backs seems like a good one, and for Nate it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. But as proximity intensifies so do their feelings, only those feelings aren’t the ones they thought they’d be. Steamy, sassy, a little angsty and these two young adults help each other grow. A HFN cause they’re so young.

When I started this, I almost put it back down. Bully Romance isn’t really my thing and I felt like that’s how Nathan started out, but instead there was a fine line between hate and lust. Nathan and Josie are both stubborn and full of fire. They definitely had chemistry and their fake dating turning real was definitely bound to happen with that underlying burn.
I liked the plotline of this romance, though I felt that Nathan’s grief didn’t have much growth/healing. I thought there could have been more there.

4.6⭐️ There’s a fine line between love & hate.

Every book that I’ve ready by Clarissa McCay has been a great read. This one is no different. It’s not my favorite of her stories, but still a great read. I loved the banter between Josie & Nathan. There was always heat behind their aggravation with each other. I loved seeing how their relationship progressed. They got a HFN, but I wish had an epilogue to show them together years later. The ending felt a little rushed to wrap up all the loose ends, which is what made it not my favorite of her stories. But I truly enjoyed it, none-the-less.

Fake Dating the Player is the love story for Josie an Nathan, who have known each other since they were little kids. Nathan's mom and Josie's aunt have always thought they’d make an amazing couple. This kind of leads to them actually growing to hate each other. After they get caught in their one night stand by her family, to get everyone off their backs, they plan to “fake date” and break up so they can tell everyone they at least gave it a shot. But things get messed up when real feelings start to show. Can fake lead to something real? This is a great story. Really loved Nathan and Josie. Highly recommend. Josie Turner & Nathan Alexander have been neighbors since they were little kids, but as they grew into adolescents their easy friendship turned into indifference and eventually animosity.

Now stuck at the same university, but with parents who want them together they embark on a fake relationship, although it quickly becomes real.

I enjoyed this friends to enemies, to lovers story…especially how quickly Nathan truly falls for Josie’s and admits it to her. I definitely enjoyed the barbs they traded with each other on their journey from fake to real

As we all know the only solution to getting your family off your back about dating the family friend around your age is to fake date them.. right?

Josie and Nate are one time friends and now enemies, granted this is mostly due to their families shipping them too hard.

But when theyre away at school together they come up with the perfect ploy, fake dating for the fam. The only problem? Josies cousin is at school too.

I enjoyed this book, i had to smother a few smiles, its a good length hockey :sport romance.

Josie and Nathan have know each other for a long time. They live next door to each other and seem to vehemently dislike each other much to the chagrin of their moms who keep pushing them together. They end of having a steamy encounter that they try to forget. They end of fake dating to get the moms off their backs. However, they are just so good together. Nathan comes clean first about his feeling and Josie also acknowledges her love for Nathan. I truly enjoyed this new adult love story.

This was an Enemies to lovers.
It was a very good easy read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Both Josie and Nathan are neighbours and grew up together, but somewhere along the line they became enemies.

But both their parents have been match making them for years now.
Nathan's friend tease him about not being able to be in a relationship. So both have decided to get everyone off their back to fake date and then break up eventually. But lines get blurred and all sorts happen. This was a very sweet love story with some spice.
Give it a read

Enemies to lovers via a fake There are some hilarious one liners in this book that had me LOL. This is such a fun read, families pushing our hero and heroine together despite them not really liking each other. A fake date plan to throw them off the scent, throw in emotional no holds barred sex and obviously they are going to realise their feelings will change.
Entertaining, easy to read, great characters and a few sub plots that fingers crossed will get their own book soon.

A cute tale about two college students who've lived next door to each other their whole lives and whose parents have shipped their relationship that entire time. So they decide to fake date to take off some of the pressure and will eventually fake break up so that they can resume their own separate lives. However, what starts as fake slowly morphs into something real and while doing so it also helps heal other broken relationships in their world.

Nathan and Josie grew up next door to each other. And there's no love lost between them. Their mothers are forever plotting to get them together. How to resolve this situation? Fake dating followed by a breakup. There's a fine line between love and hate, and Nathan and Josie find themselves dancing on that line. They're perfect together; it just takes them a while to see for themselves. I enjoyed this book, watching as Nathan and Josie play pretend.
