Brinley & Van
Brinley (great name!) was widowed at just 21, 4 years ago. Not just her super large family, but everyone in their small town is very protective of her, so when her new roommate turns out to be a tattooed well built hunk everyone is on high alert to make sure she doesn't get hurt.
Book boyfriend alert!! I loved Van so much! For looking like a bad boy he totally did not give off that vibe at all. His backstory was heartbreaking, but what he did to move on from it was commendable. He's sweeter than chocolate icing, respectful and patient with the added bonus of rock hard snug-able abs and he cooks! And the camping with the Girl Scouts, gah, just adorable!
We have a bunch of Bailey's involved in the story. I liked the close cousin relationship Brinley has with Calista, Easton and Lance. I really need to go back and read that whole series. I especially want to meet the infamous Great Grandma Dori who sounds like she was an absolute delight. We've got the setup for The Trouble with Runaway Brides, so I'm looking forward to that.
I really loved everything about this book. They were so comfortable with each other right away. Their mutual attraction is undeniable. I'm not even mad about the 3rd act breakup as I can see why they felt they had to walk away. Could I have went for a longer discussion about it? sure could've, but I'm happy with how it ended.
The only reason behind my -.25 is because of the bonus chapters that I read from signing up for the newsletter. I won't give anything away, but I didn't like the place they visited since IMO there are more worthy places where they could of found what they were looking for.

And they were roommates…
Slow-burn, forced proximity and a fluffy, sweet story in a small town that seemed to have watched a bit too many episodes of Gossip Girl … but in a funny way though. I actually liked the town and it's citizens. It was a fun setting.
The book was a journey for Brin and Van as they tried to heal themselves and each other from their past and find love once again. Brin was a very sweet heroine, one married young and turned into a widow very young, who didn't truly have the chance to explore herself. Even though she irritated me at times, I enjoyed her povs.
Van wasn't the bad boy I thought I would get. He's actually the furthest from a "bad boy". He had a huge heart and was caring, patient and just lovely. He's not my go-to type of mmc, I like my bad boys …well bad, but I can make an exception for Van!
This was an easy story with a light pace. It wasn't as spicy as I originally thought, according to my spico-meter, but it worked out well with their story. I just wished that their tension and chemistry was more magnetic.
Did I like it? Sure.
Would I reread it? Probably not.

Another great small town romance from this author duo
Loved the setting in Lake Starlight. I skipped the first book in this series, because I have too much anxiety to read about Calista and Rylan. Second chances hardly work for me. This book can be read as a standalone but I do recommend reading the first one first. There are spoilers in this book about the previous couple. If you’ve read the Baileys series, an extra bonus. A lot of characters make a reappearance and I think it will add to know their background stories. I do miss the (great)grandmas at the retirement home. This had such an extra touch to the Green family series.
I enjoyed this book, I mean it has a tattooed bad boy after all. A bit predictable and the ending felt rushed. This didn’t make me enjoy the story any less. I love small town romances and this one did the job. Not sure about the pairing in the next book. I might be in for a not so appealing heroine, but the authors may surprise me.
Safety:
Safe. No OW drama. Heroine has a dead husband, and she’s still hung up on him at the beginning of the book. Although I didn’t feel like the hero is second best. Hero gave some manwhore vibes. Only did the casual one nighters before the h. H celibate for couple of months, h celibate for 4 years (since husband died). She tried to rebound 3 years ago but couldn’t go through with it. No cheating. No sex with OP.

At first I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this book. I felt like the beginning was a bit slow and I honestly wasn’t sure if I would relate to Brinley. But I was completely wrong. Brin and Van blew me away! I loved how sweet they were together. Their growth as a couple was so fun to read. The family shenanigans were funny, the small town vibes were great, and overall this was a fun & easy read. The ending was the perfect balance of emotional and relatable. I loved the epilogue and it has me so excited for Lance’s story, because I really enjoyed him as a side character!

I am enjoying the second generation of Bailey's. This is Brinley Kelly and Van Adler's story; if you have read Falling for my Brother’s Best Friend, you'll remember Brin's parents, Savannah Bailey and Liam Kelly.
Brin is a very young widow after losing her husband only a year after marriage. So it's expected that her family is overprotective of her, but it's not only them. It's the entire town of Lake Starlight, and when she gets a new roommate, the whole town is on high alert to make sure she doesn't get hurt again.

4 Brinley and Van Stars
This is the second book in the Lake Starlight series. It reads ok as a standalone.
Brin is from a huge family and that family are very protective of her. She is a young widow. She married at twenty and after about a year her husband died unexpectedly. Since then every one treats her like glass. Van Adler is new in town and has no intention of staying for long. I liked the way they met and ultimately Van ends up renting a room in her apartment for his brief stay but lines get blurred and before long their chemistry is practically pulsating off the walls.
I liked Brin as a heroine - she is sweet but I was glad she had a strong will that came through. Van is a gorgeous Hero and I enjoyed how his story developed through the story.
I am not normally a fan of romances where there is a dead ex but I had no issue with this one. It is really well written and I never felt Van was not enough.
Some hot scenes.
Lots of chemistry.

Piper Rayne has done it again. I had my own expectations, not super high, but I still got whoa’d because this one refused to miss. And listen… I did not expect the weeping, sobbing, crying, throwing up moment near the end, but it was all worth it once that conclusion hit. Emotional damage? Delivered. Satisfaction? Achieved. 😮💨
Brin and Van’s story is a gentle, emotionally grounded romance that centers on healing, rediscovery, and quiet love. Brinley, a young widow who never truly got to explore herself, brings sweetness and vulnerability to the page. Van, far from the “bad boy” label, is all heart: patient, caring, and unexpectedly lovely. Not the usual broody mmc, but one worth making an exception for.
Their connection is soft and steady, with mutual comfort and attraction from the start. While the chemistry wasn’t as magnetic or spicy as expected, it suited the tone of their journey. The pacing is light, the small-town setting adds charm, and the family shenanigans bring warmth and humor. Even the third-act breakup felt earned and well-managed, with a resolution that left things emotionally satisfying. By the end, their growth as a couple shines through, and the epilogue wraps it all up with just the right touch of heart. A cozy, feel-good read that proves love doesn’t always need fireworks to be powerful. 💚
The small-town setting and found family tropes never miss (again). Once again, Piper Rayne delivers that warm, chaotic energy I crave, complete with quirky side characters and heart-tugging dynamics. And don't forget the Buzz Wheel app. That cutesy little gossip app continues to be the town’s most iconic menace. It brings joy, giggles, and just the right dose of drama to every page. I swear, I’d read a whole spin-off just about the Buzz Wheel updates alone. 🤣
Along with it, great appreciation to Connor Crais and Melissa Moran for narrating this one. Their duet performance was smooth, emotionally layered, and completely immersive. The way they brought Brinley and Van to life felt effortless, every emotion hit exactly where it needed to.
Also yes, that tiny glimpse of Lance and Kenzie had me side-eyeing so hard I almost pulled a muscle. 👀👀 The forbidden banter potential is off the charts, and I’m already emotionally invested in whatever delicious chaos they’re about to unleash. I can feel it in my bones: the next book is gonna be unhinged in the best way, and I’m absolutely ready to spiral. So yep, I'm leaping into The Trouble with Runaway Brides and ready to resurface with something. 💥🏃🏻♀️

Van is a Coast Guard diver on mandatory leave, he goes to the small Alaskan town where Brinley and her very large extended family live. They become roommates by a miscommunication, the two had met briefly and flirted so it makes living together a bit awkward.
I really enjoyed this slow burn romance, and I loved that their attraction to each other was in the open, but they agreed not to act on it. It makes for great tension and some adorable flirting.
They have time to become friends, they get to know each other and develop genuine feelings. I enjoyed their growing relationship very much.
I love that Brinley slowly becomes happier, more herself than she had been since her husband’s passing. She begins to explore her creativity with Van’s encouragement.
Van is a really great guy, I swooned over the way he treated Brinley with care and patience.
I love Brinley’s family and their interactions with the pair. They are great for laughs, advice and a bit of meddling.
I read and loved the previous/first book in this series 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙱𝙻𝙴𝙼 𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷 𝚂𝙴𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙳 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝙽𝙲𝙴𝚂. I think they’re best read in order as there is something connecting all the main characters, it’s a very heartwarming connection between this large, lovable family. They are a close knit family, it adds to the charm of the quaint small town world.
I really love this sweet, swoony romance and the steam is wonderful when they finally act on their feelings. I’m excited for the next book, I’m loving this series.

I read and loved the previous/first book in this series 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙱𝙻𝙴𝙼 𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷 𝚂𝙴𝙲𝙾𝙽𝙳 𝙲𝙷𝙰𝙽𝙲𝙴𝚂. I think they’re best read in order as there is something connecting all the main characters, it’s a very heartwarming connection between this large, lovable family. They are a close knit family, it adds to the charm of the quaint small town world.
I really love this sweet, swoony romance and the steam is wonderful when they finally act on their feelings. I’m excited for the next book, I’m loving this series.

I am loving this series. I have fallen in love with this town and the people in it. I love how Grandma Dori is pulling strings, even in heaven.
Van comes into town with his tattoo covered muscles and bad boy vibe. Him and Brinley catch each other’s eyes right away. The chemistry between them is 🔥🔥. Brinley is widowed and the whole town, along with her huge family tend to handle her with kid gloves.
I’m not going into more details because you just need to read or listen to the book. I love how Piper intertwined their past. It was truly fate that led them to each other.

Book two follows Brinley Kelly and Carey Van Adler. Brinley is the daughter of Savannah and Liam Kelly who we met in the Bailey series. Brinley married young and lost her husband to a freak accident no longer after getting married. 5 years later, Van shows up in Lake Starlight on leave from the Coast Guard. He is voluntold to take leave to reassess if he wishes to truly reenlist. He arrives to Lake Starlight, gets a job bartending and needs a place to stay. It just so happens that Brinley put out an ad looking for a roommate (since her ex-roommate, Calista from book 1 is moving out).
We get some really amazing moments in this book. The authors found a great way to honor and immortalize our favorite grandma Dori. She was such a staple in the original Bailey series and unfortunately was too old to continue living - but she is not done ensuring her great grandbabies get their happily ever afters!
Disclaimer of sorts: received an ARC copy of the e-book and read the book and then immediately received an ALC copy of the audiobook and had to listen to it again. The audiobook was really well done. Duet style with solid narrators. They did a fantastic job bringing the story to life!
We also get some great cameos of Savannah, Liam, Denver, and Rome. It's hard to believe how large the family is now. Brin mentions at one point having over 25 cousins and I am just floored. The Bailey clan was a large one and it's only larger now. Brin needed this support system as a widow and they continue to support her through her transition to dating again throughout this book.
Overall, this book was really sweet. Van is exactly what Brin needs to heal, although it is not easy on them the entire time. They have some secrets they are keeping from each other and when it all comes to light: it threatens to break her even more than before. I found the plot predictable but enjoyable. Never disappointed in a Piper Rayne book.
Many times throughout the book, Brin mentions her best friend Kenzie and some sort of love triangle nonsense between her and her two closest cousins: Lance and Easton. I am guessing the next book will dive into what happened there and how it all turns out. Kenzie currently lives in New York, so it sounds like maybe Lance will be the main guy because his dad's family owns a hospitality business based in New York (as well as Glacier Point Resort in Lake Starlight - this is another Bailey series book). So excited for book 3!!!

The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates was the second book in the Lake Starlight series by the authors Piper Rayne. The series was a second generation spin-off from The Baileys series.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the secondary characters so much that I read the entire book in one sitting. Brinley Kelly was the daughter of Savannah Bailey and Liam Kelly, Falling for My Brother’s Best Friend. She married young and suffered a tragedy around her first anniversary. It had been four years now and she was still living in the shadow of her dead husband. Enter Van Adler. Van had secrets of his own and was just passing through until he could get back to his job. Lake Starlight seemed just the place to pass the next eight weeks. It was of course emotional, but it was also delightful and fun. I would have loved a longer timeline and deeper dive, but it all in all, it was a quick and enjoyable read. The Trouble with Runaway Bride’s is up next and I can’t wait!

Normally I don’t like the secret coincidence trope; it always seems too contrived. But it works pretty well this time. Brinley is a young widow who has been living in a shell since her husband died four years ago. Her many relatives all treat her with kid gloves. She’s trying to move on but between her family and working in a job she doesn’t really like, it’s difficult. On top of that, her cousin Calista, who used to be her roommate, just got married and she needs someone to share the rent.
Van is on a forced leave from his career as a Coast Guard diver. His commander says he needs to take the eight weeks of vacation he’s accumulated before he will allow him to reenlist. So he needs a temporary job and a place to stay. His immediate attraction to his new roomie shouldn’t be a problem if he keeps in mind he’ll be leaving soon.
I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to everyone.

I loved the light hearted feel of the writing style in this book. Not quite the classic good girl / bad boy story I thought I was getting but it was so much better. The twist almost got me but it made the end feel so much better for my primarily dark romance loving heart. Brinley had been through such terrible heartbreak that everyone treated her like glass. They all worried that bad boy Van was coming along to break her but he made her so much stronger instead. This was the perfect fast paced read I needed!

The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates by Piper Rayne is a small-town contemporary romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Connor Crais and Melissa Moran. This is the second book in the Lake Starlight series.
I love Piper's books! She does an amazing job pulling me in from the first chapter. I really enjoyed the relationship that bloomed between Van and Brinley. I loved that we got both of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
I can't wait for the next book in the series The Trouble with Runaway Brides to be released on August 8, 2023.

I love seeing all of our next gen Bailey‘s and to see or OG‘s again! I really enjoyed how they still included Grandma Dori throughout the book.
After Brin‘s husband died she didn‘t think she would find that forever kind of love again. Until she find that in her bad boy roommate Van Adler.
I could’ve definitely read another 100 pages about those 2.

Second generation books are always one of my favorites because I get to meet the old couples again with their ever changing lives and also get to meet a brand new couple to fall in love with! And Piper Rayne is delivering one great romance after another for the Bailey next gen! The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates was slow burn goodness with heartaching feels and sizzling hot chemistry. Brinley and Van made me laugh and swoon and cry. My return trip to Lake Starlight was a memorable one!
Brinley Kelly is still recovering from the grief of losing her husband. She has to move on. After her cousin moves out to be with her love of life, she put an ad in newspaper for a roommate. And Coast Guard on mandatory vacation, Van Adler answers it. He is an tattooed bad boy alpha and he isn’t hiding that he is attracted to Brinley. Is she ready to make a move? Their past is connected in a heartbreaking way and when it comes out, what will be the result?
I didn't expect Brinley and Van to break me like this! Brinley is such a sweet and bright soul but grief has taken away her light. She is loved by her big family and she is training to take over the family business but she is missing big parts of her heart. She knows she has to open up her heart again but she is scared to get hurt again. Van is completely opposite of her dead husband. Tattoed. Intense. Alpha. Bossy. So freaking sexy and charming. Van is running from something too. His early life wasn’t as loving as Brinley and he has made Coast Guard his whole life. But this dangerous and taxing job cannot continue to be his only existence. It's taking toll on his mental health too. Brinley made him feel to consider something beyond his job. But he can feel that Brinley is fragile so initially, he just offers a solid friendship. It was heartwarming to see them spending some sweet and cute and funny times together but wait. It won't be all sunshine and rainbows. As they open up their heart slowly, their pain and vulnerability also come out and then comes that gut wrenching secret that almost broke them. I said almost because Brinley showed amazing strength and pushed Van out of the cycle of blame and guilt. I couldn't hold back my tears. Two broken Souls found healing and love together. Of course Lake Starlight with it's awesome citizens and awesome Baileys played an important role too. The chemistry was built up so well and my heart is overflowing with feels.

I truly enjoyed this book, and read it in 24 hours. It asks an interesting romance question: what happens when everyone in your family has their “one true love” and you’ve lost yours? Does it mean there’s no one else out there for you, even at 24 years old? The undeniable chemistry between Brinley and Van realistically makes Brin believe she could have love in her life again. And as Van sets out to woo her, he seeks her consent at every turn.
This book can absolutely be read as a standalone. While there are a few Easter eggs for longtime Piper Rayne readers, newcomers will be able to easily follow along. I love the advice letters from Dori to the main characters. And any time I get a glimpse of Liam and Savannah, my all-time favorite Bailey couple, it’s a gift.
The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates is a hopeful book filled with joy and steam while the characters work through their own issues. If you are a fan of small town romance, forced proximity and a second chance at love after a massive loss, you’ll love this book.

As always, once @PiperRayne find their groove, each book gets better than the last and this was no exception. The recipe here had ALL the right things – I love a bad boy. I mean, come on – Van was perfect for this role. Motorcycle, tattoos, Coast Guard diver on leave with a tragic past. Ahem, yes please. Then you combine that with Brinley, who is still recovering from the loss of her husband and stuck in the family job she doesn’t really love. Is it bad to admit that I absolutely love a widow story? Well, I do and this one was pretty spot on. The chemistry that these two had was off the charts. I love that the physical connection was always there, and the play on the back and forth between them was so great. At the same time, this book was not about them just jumping into bed together. I love the vulnerability and levels of intimacy these two created while keeping it spicy and honest. It was such a unique combination and it made these two just jump off the page. Even in how the ending was handled, I loved it so much. I was rooting for them the entire time – I have come to appreciate @ConnorCrais as a male narrator and he was the perfect Van. I love how he and @MelissaMoran played off each other in this duet narration. Plus we got cameos from Rylan and Calista which I loved. This was just so, so good… I am not sure how @PiperRayne is going to top this one in the rest of the series.

I was super intrigued by this! It gives a Dear John vibe - He’s in the Coast Guard and is on leave when he goes to a small town in Alaska, hours from where he’s stationed. He signs up to be the roommate to the girl who was widowed at a young age, not knowing it’s her. That forced proximity yall! He’s walking around ripped with no shirt and no underwear, but don’t worry! He has on those low riding grey sweats. 🥵
I loved seeing Brin, the FMC, find herself again after such a loss and letting herself be free. Her mental and emotional growth throughout the book was great. Van, the MMC, has a past that holds him back in moving forward, too. Watching this unfold was sweet and lighthearted. For me, this is a read for in-between heavy books!

The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates is book 2 in the Lake Starlight series and follows Brinley and Van. This is a slow burn, sweet love story between unexpected roommates. I listened to the audio which was absolutely lovely.
Brin was widowed when she was just 21 and now, 4 years later, with the support of her family and the small town she lives in, she's ready to move on. But get this, her new roommate who she thought was going to be female is definitely NOT female. Nope, Van is a hunky, tattooed, ex military man that Brin can't help but gush over.
Brin and Van are TOO freaking cute! A sweet "let's try and be friends even though we are both wildly attracted to each other" moment is exactly what I was looking for and Piper Rayne absolutely delivered!
I was a little nervous when I saw this had the widow trope, I was scared it was going to be SO sad. But Piper Rayne handle this dynamic with nothing but grace.

The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates is an absolutely fabulous read filled with hope, second chances, just the right amount of angst, and a twist I never saw coming.
Brinley is fiercely loved by her well-meaning friends and family. She’s struggled with moving on from her past. When she meets Van, it’s like something clicks. Even though she’s afraid and tries hard to fight it, she’s powerless against the pull she feels towards him. Brinley isn’t the only one whose past weighs heavily on them. Van is married to his job and is only taking time off because he’s been forced to. Van has his own demons that are chasing him, but when he meets Brinley, he starts thinking of a life he never knew he wanted.
Together, Brinely and Van, go on one heck of a journey. Their connection is intense and life-changing. And once you meet these two, you can’t help but root for them to find their happily ever after.

Oh I am loving this series! Brinley is a widow who is adapting to living on her own, but due to finances she needs to find a roommate. Van is only in town for a few months until his boss allows him to come back to work, so he answers Brinley's ad.
Van and Brinley were adorable, I love how he treated her from the moment they met, but also that he respected her boundaries the whole time. He also stood up for her, helped her see things in a new light, and reevaluate what she wanted from life. Brinley also helped Van see things in a different light and evaluate whether or not he wants to continue to make his career his whole life, or open up to different things.
I loved their relationship, every little scene had me smiling. This book had such a nice balance between light happy moments, and emotional angst. I cannot wait to continue this series!
