I love adrenaline rushes. I love crying my eyes out while reading. I love drama and pain and heartbreak and angst. But I can't handle 10 books like that a week (yes, I read that much). So, I'm always glad when BookSprout notifies me that there is a new Greenwood arc available. At least then I know for sure I have another calm in the storm waiting for me.

This was the book I was really looking forward to ever since I read Thalia's story. We of course already saw glimpses of what was going on, but now it was finally time for Michaela and Owen tot tell their story. And although, after reading all the previous books in the series, I thought I knew how this was gonna go the author did eventually surprise me.

What I love most about this series is how those characters are far from perfect. Clumsy shifters, vampires who can't keep blood down and now a witch who really can't make potions. It's not often we meet supernatural characters who are not talented at being supernatural and it doesn't just feel refreshing, it does feel like we're finally reading about REAL supernatural characters.

In this case those two characters seem to be a match made in heaven. I like how this book still has all the elements of that insecure phase where you're not entirely sure what the other feels, but it doesn't do the drama for the sake of drama. The characters talk and realize that if they want something to happen they need to take matters into their own hands.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series!

I received a free copy from the author through Booksprout and voluntarily reviewed it.

I am really enjoying this series and was excited for Michaela's story. Michaela is the best friend of Thalia whose story I already read. As much I enjoyed returning to this series I enjoyed this book less than the others in this series as it felt like I already read half of the story in Blind Dates for Lonely Gorgons as there's some overlap plot wise and I didn't get pulled into the story as much due to that.

Michaela wants to help her friend who is a gorgon go on a date without her classes and risking turning her date into stone. She hears Owen is the person to help her with potions and so approaches him for help with the potion. Owen gladly will help her and as the two work on the potion they grow closer. I liked reading about the potion making process, even though Michaela can only fetch the ingredients as she ruins any potion she makes. There's a bit about how the potion making works and the different steps which was fun to read about and I liked how Owen took her inability to make potions in stride and still found a way she could help by getting the ingredients.

I liked Owen and Michaela together and there are some sweet and fun scenes with them. Their ice cream date was a fun one and I liked their banter and the way they interacted with one another. I had expected more of the book to take place chronologically after Thalia's story, but it matches the exact timeline of that book. Michaela's trouble with potions it brought up multiple times, but there isn't as much about what causes it or how to improve that, which on the other hand also was a nice as it was just how she was.

The focus of the plot besides the romance is on creating the potion for Thalia and I felt the plot of this book felt a bit lackluster because of that. I have already read Thalia's story and enjoyed it and it felt like this was basically the other side of that story, namely what Michaela gets up to with the potion and Owen without Thalia. The plot of this book takes place at exactly the same time frame as Thalia's story. And it just felt kinda off to me, there's a fun twist in Thalia's story, but as I already know the twist, that surprise was lacking here. I am not sure how this story could've been written to show their romance and not overlap so much with Thalia's story, but it just didn't fully work for me sadly.

To summarize: This was another fun and sweet paranormal romance story set at the Obscure Academy. I liked reading about Michaela and Owen and how they grow closer as they work on a potion together. I liked learning more about witches and the potion brewing specifically. I liked their romance and especially their ice cream date scene and the thoughtful gifts Owen gets Michaela. I struggled a bit with how much of this story overlap with Thalia's story, the stories take place at the same time and I felt like there was a bit too much overlap as I only read Thalia's story a few months ago and it was still fresh in my mind. There's a fun twist in that story, which I already knew here and didn't have the same fun twist vibe as I already knew it. While this wasn't my favorite story in this series I really enjoy this series and spending more time at Obscure Academy.

I already knew a little bit about Michaela and Owen’s story from Thalia’s tale in Blind Dates for Lonely Gorgons. So I really enjoyed reading about the same moments from this couples point of view. Plus, there were so many moments of joy in their potion making together. Honestly, they were just as cute as I was expecting, but Michaela’s inability to filter her words and thoughts just made me all that much happier and more in love with her. Plus, it made me hope all that much more for her happily ever after.

One of the reasons I so enjoyed Michaela as a character was the fact that she took her shortcomings and just dealt with them. A witch who can’t make potions is something that could be potentially seriously shameful, but she doesn’t show embarrassment and shame over it. Rather, she takes it in stride and is able to work forwards in her life. I was kind of expecting Owen to unlock the secret behind her monumental stuff ups with potion making, and I like that, ultimately, they didn’t actually solve her problems. Just continued to work with it.

Although I’ve read a few Greenwood stories, particularly the Obscure Academy tales, something about Potion Making for Disastrous Witches reminds me about falling for my partner. Wildly different circumstances, but the spending all your time together and coupling, but not being sure of where you stand. The joys of first kisses and first dates. Honestly, the feeling of this just took me back and left me smiling so happily. I’m still madly in love with my partner, so it was nice to feel all of these feelings and reflections while reading this.

There is something so damn joyful of visiting Obscure Academy. They are short little stints into a world where everything is possible. Something about them has this feeling of hope and gives such a positive and happy vibe. I absolutely adored reading this, and I look forward to reading more and more and more in the future!

This was another cute short story in a fun magical series. We have witches, and gorgons. The twist is that making potions is actually disastrous for one of the witches. This is a young college story so if that’s not your thing skip this, but I think that’s part of what makes it so cute. The story is not spicy so it’s okay for younger readers in high school as well.

I really enjoyed this book and getting to know Michaela better after reading about her in previous books in the series. Michaela & Owen's story was really cute and a lot of fun and this book also gives us a large peak into Thalia and Evander's story (Blind Dates for Lonely Gorgons) as well as a bit more info about Essie so I am looking forward to reading more about her and Byron in the next book Trading Names For Polite Sprites.

Potion Trouble . . .

Witch Michaela has a discouraging track record in making potions. Most of them end up with awkward consequences. So when she tries to help her best friend, Thalia, who is a Gorgon trying to stay away from others she might accidentally turn to stone, Michaela realizes she is in over her head and seeks help from someone much more skilled in potions.

Owen is indisputably the best potion-brewing warlock at the Obscure Academy and just may be able to create a potion to stop a Gorgon from turning people into stone. As he helps Michaela, he includes her in what he is doing to let her gain some confidence and skill. Before she “helps”, she asked him to let her have a small amount of what he was making and allow her to finish the spell in a tiny cauldron. She adds a single tiny dandelion seed after insisting they both put on safety clothing and goggles. Sure enough, the contents turned an odd green color and bubbled dangerously. Looking at Owen, he looked horrified as a huge jet of potion spurts out of the cauldron. Aside from plopping on the workbench, no further damage was done. But it convinced Owen, who still gave her a chuckle and smile, to allow her to simply hand him what he needed while he added the items to the potion. Working side by side, their attraction increases. He is easy to work with and always has a smile for her. Will they be able to help Thalia while discovering a comfortable relationship with each other? Will she learn enough to finally make a potion without endangering the Academy?

Can you imagine being a witch who couldn't make potions? Michaela has had to deal with the ridicule and being ostracized by her own coven her whole life for something that is not her fault - it's just part of who she is. Everyone, even her flatmates, taunt her for it if only in small ways (she's not allowed to make tea or anything really that requires more than 2 ingredients). She understands, really she does, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt or make her upset at times.

Owen is the resident potion master at Obscure Academy. Though he's only a 1st year, he's VERY good with potions. He knows what he wants to do in life and feels being well versed with Potion Making will help in his endeavors. He is very soft-spoken and a bit geeky. He certainly goes out of his way not to cause offense to anyone, especially Michaela.

These two seem to have a bit of a rocky start when she approaches him for help with a potion. Over time, though, they get much more comfortable with eachother. Of everyone, Mickee feels like Owen is the one person who sees all of her, not just the broken witch like everyone else.

This was a sweet and comical book and I got completely lost in it while reading. There are really two stories in one as we also get a quick story about Mickee's best friend Thalia and Owen's friend Evander. This is one you really don't want to miss. I am very appreciative of the ARC I received and provide this review voluntarily. I hope you take the time to read it and enjoy it as much as I did. Happy Reading Y'all 📚

Opposites attract
Conversations with varying inputs are how we grow. Owen and Michaela aren’t just learning about potions during their lessons and sessions; they are just getting to know each other better with potions as the vehicle. And it turns out that out that potion making can be a transferable skill…and useful in the kitchen for those with food issues.

The author incorporates some serious topics:
** This one falls under quite a few categories (boundaries, not listening to gossip, and trust). While Thalia wasn’t gossiping about her mother, Michaela had never met her and what she heard might color her conception of Thalia’s mum.
‘I can lament over your mum with you without knowing the specifics.’
** Another one pertains to dating (transparency and trust). While Thalia had no intention of hiding her gorgonness with Evander, divulging personal information to an almost stranger is still difficult. Bringing someone into your circle of trust needs to be earned. Poor Thalia needs to balance that with Evander’s life – soooo don’t want to be in her shoes!

Some sage advice from the author:
LABEL your herbs and spices (note to self).
‘It's better to drink because we're happy than because we're sad.’
Have a back-up plan for your career – it’s always good to have options, anyway.

Fave quote:
‘A big tub of ice cream and ouzo.’
‘You can never have enough ginger.’

‘Trading Names for Polite Sprites’ releases around mid May.

Michaela is a witch that has a huge problem, she is a disastrous potion maker. I mean the woman can’t even brew tea without something happening and you’ll see what happens when she tries to brew a potion. Eeeek. I laughed myself silly in this book. Thalia is Mickie bestie and is a gorgon with no love life. So, when there is a blind date event happening, Mickie talks Thalia into it, however, Thalia is a gorgon and wears special glasses so she doesn’t turn people to stone. So Mickie goes and finds someone to help her brew the potion that can help Thalia with that problem. Mickie finds out more about Essie, one of her flat mates. Mickie gets Owen to help her make that potion for Thalia. I love the interaction between Owen and Mickie. While all this is going on, they find themselves being drawn to each other and decide to go on a date. It was so cute. Plus, what you see of Thalia and her date is adorable as well. (Their book is called Blind Date) I read that too and it was adorable and awesome as well. I really enjoyed this book, however, we still don’t know why Mickie has so much trouble brewing potions. I expected them to figure that out. Maybe it will happen later on in the series. These books are so much fun to read and romantic. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Michaela is a witch who can’t make potions. Her flat mates even have a pact to keep her away from the tea kettle. Her best friend, Tallia, is a Gorgon, afraid to get close to anyone and turn them to stone. Michaela is determined to help her with a potion and searches for someone with the skills to make one. Little does she know that in helping her friend, she’ll find someone who can accept her despite her defect.
Michaela’s story runs concurrently with Tallia’s in Blind Dates for Lonely Gorgons, although it’s not necessary to read that before. Michaela and Owen have a sweet courtship. Once he understands her inability to concoct potions, he does all he can to include her in the process. They slowly build on their attraction as they’re both trying to help friends. Another fun installment in the Obscure Academy series.

Potion Making For Disastrous Witches is the first book I've read in the Obscure Academy series but far from my first Laura Greenwood book. Potion Making has all the cozy romance but in an academy setting.

Owen and Michela were a good match. I liked the easy connection and banter between them, they were the sweetest. Separately or together both were easy to like with their patience and understanding of others.

The plot was sweet, quirky, and light-hearted. All of which I've come to expect from a Laura Greenwood book. I like how Greenwood developed the potion-making into something more. The societal aspects, history, possibilities, and more. It was all very interesting. I loved how she took one simple aspect and developed a whole story from it.

Sometimes it's nice just to have a quick read, that's just fun, no angst, no tension, just a breath of fresh air, and that what Potion Making was for me.

First I recommend reading Blind Dates for Lonely Gorgons a short story in this world if you haven’t before reading this. It’s not 100% necessary but the events in that book are the impetus that lead to Mickie meeting Owen so I think it’s worthwhile.
This is a sweet, funny, short romance book about two witches Michaela and Owen and how the former’s complete inability to make potions lead to them meeting and falling for each other. As I said earlier there’s overlap between this and the aforementioned other story so reading them together will make sense. An enjoyable read about two young people falling in love and the roadblocks, mostly self imposed along the way. It’s light and fluffy and feel good with just a teensy bit of teenaged angst to make it appropriately realistic. A great addition to the series!.

What do you do when you can't brew yourself out of a paper bag? You enlist the help of the best potion maker around. What our heroine did not expect what the attraction to our hero that would be a part of the recipe.

This is book five of the series, but it is written as a standalone, so no prior reading is required.

The story is a paranormal romance with an academy setting. The story is well written and easy to read with a couple of fun characters as our leads. We get a nice bit of the usual academy elements coupled with a bit of an unusual romance which all makes for a fast paced and fun story. Overall, this one was rather light and entertaining, which was perfect for a relaxing read. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

Highly recommended.

This installment was a quicker read for me due to the fact I really enjoyed this particular story. I found it interesting in the fact that there is a stigma around witches whom can't make potions. I mean using wand and spell magic is still magic.
Anyway, I'm thrilled that Mickie found Owen in a search of a potion maker to help a friend. Ironically Owen knew exactly the potion she needed because he had looked it up for his friend. Mickie does have to prove to Owen that she truly is a horrible potion maker 1st. After that, they come up with a way for her to help with the potions without them going crazy. I like this solution even though it doesn't solve her problem. They work and fit well together and they have a good HEA.

"Sometimes it amazes me the kinds of things people are working on,"

Michaela, and her inability to make anything even vaguely resembling a potion, including tea, has recurred throughout this series, but here she moves center stage as she finds herself needing a potion, and willing to go the extra mile to make it, and make sure it works.

At one point, having only known her a week, Owen describes Michaela, and what he's learned about her as a person -- and he nails why she makes a great leading lady for this story.

When all is said and done, as much fun as so many of these characters would be to knows, Michaela and Owen come across as ones I'd want to have as friends.

I was gifted with a copy of Potion Making for Disastrous Witches and chose to share my thoughts.

I love reading the books in the Obscure Academy World. I think my first ever was about Thalia and Evander and their blind date, which also is mentioned in the 'background' of Owen and Michaela's story.

Michaela wants to help out her bestie Thalia but since she's not SO good (awful actually) at making potions, she doesn't know what to do. So she seeks out the best potion maker at the Academy. Funny thing, he's already about to start on the potion that Michaela is seeking, so he says he'll help her, but has a condition.

Come watch a friendship bloom or two into so much more. The story is fun, you see and meet characters, new and all. One potion can change someone's whole world....

What a cute story, with fun characters. I enjoyed Michaela and Owen. Their story starts because Michaela wants to help her friend so she goes to Owen because she can not make the potion herself. She does not expect to find love as they work on the potion. I enjoyed their solution to her making potions, but still benign a part of the process. I enjoyed Michaela and Owen's dates and their banter as they got to know each other. I enjoyed the twist of why Owen already had found the position she needed. I highly recommend you read this sweet romance, especially if you like paranormal romance. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Michaela is a witch but she is a disaster at potion making. She is so bad her flatmates have banned her from making tea. Michaela has a close friend,Thalia who really wants to meet someone but is unsure if anyone would ever be interested dating her, a gorgon. Michaela had read about a way to keep a gorgon from turning people to stone but it involves making a potion. Knowing that she is incapable of making it, she finds the best potion maker on campus, Owen. Owen agrees to make the potion if she assists him and goes out for a drink with him. The time they spend together brings them closer together.

A witch who can’t make potions?

Michaela is a failure at potion-making. They always turn into disasters, sometimes dangerous ones. So when she needs a potion to help a friend she turns to the top potion maker at Obscure Academy. Owen is always happy to help other supernaturals and the cute witch who shows up at the lab is no exception.

This book has humor, paranormal characters, and a good plot. I finished it in a day and enjoyed every page. Obscure Academy is such a good series. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

This was so cute. I love that it was a desire to help their friends that initially brought Michaela and Owen together. I’m also very fond of the author’s ability to take something perfectly normal – something most of us take for granted in our day-to-day lives – sprinkles a little paranormal magic on the top of it and turns it out on it’s head into something new and different that makes us think just a little deeper about things. I’m already looking forward to finding out what’s going to happen next at Obscure Academy.

I really enjoy this series of YA stories! It gives my brain a break from the dark side, lol.
Michaela and Owen make a really good couple, they compliment each other in many ways. Both are trying to help a friend, both are attracted to each other and make the effort to get to know each other. With help from their flat mates they end up having a few dates before deciding this is gonna work out. Looking forward to the next Obscure Academy adventure!

In her desire to help a friend she enlists the best potion maker at the school this one decision forever changed she’ll find someone who can accept her despite her flaws. Michaela and Owen have a a wonderful courtship and build a great relationship. Once Owen understands her inability to make potions, he does all he can to help her in the potion process. They slowly build on their attraction and help a few friends along the way. This is a fun stand alone in the Obscure Academy series.

Not being good at something that you are expected to be competent at is a real blow to the ego. It is nice to see the author putting a very positive spin to that problem (and how she tied it into another of her academy romances). I like how this series is falling together to create a college experience better than the one I had.

This is such a fun and lighthearted read! Michaela Wants to save her friend but needs a whole lotta help as she cannot make a potion to save her own life! Enter Owen who is an expert in potion making who Michaela goes to for help. Along the way they fall for each other and it’s a fun journey to watch, it’s cute and it made me smile and laugh in places. It’s a lovely story with a few twists thrown and some wonderful characters.

Inability Talent Got Romance.
So Michaela having difficulties with potion brewing is fate’s way of getting her romance. Selfless Micki goes to a potion brewer warlock Owen for help. Only these two have the cutest romance with a quirky plot twist. Best friend Thalia and her story with Evander, Blind Dating for Lonely Gorgons, parallels this story.

A Potion Explosion and a Funny Coincidence

Mikaela is disastrous when it comes to making potions, but her friend Thalia needs some help counteracting her stone-gaze gorgon-effect. Going to Owen for help, she finds herself attracted to the accomplished potion-maker. I enjoyed watching the romance between Mikaela and Owen blossom, they were so cute together with their potion-making go-to-know-yous and their sweet dates. A light and fun read.

Michaela is a witch who can't make a potion to save her life. When her best friend Thalia, a gorgon, asks Michaela if she knows about a potion that can stop a gorgon from turning someone to stone, Michaela goes to see the warlock, Owen. This novella is fun and romantic, ending in a type of HEA. Very highly recommended.
