Rate this book
Haine joins the student council at an elite academy to get to know the boy who rescued her long ago.

In return for a business loan of 50 million yen, the prestigious Kamiya family gave their daughter Haine away to the Otomiya family. Haine, now an Otomiya, is appointed to the student council of the exclusive Imperial Academy, a private school for the aristocracy. Even though Haine is of proper lineage to be on the council, she finds herself struggling to find her place among the many secrets of its elite members, especially those of the president who holds her heart--Shizumasa Togu, aka "the Emperor."

Haine's family has been reunited, but the estranged Togu family still retains many of its secrets. Shizumasa and Takanari are increasingly at odds with each other as each one tries to win Haine's love. Will the twins ever be able to reconcile when they're both in love with the same girl?

Things are looking a little better for Takanari, as Shizumasa shows his wicked mustache-twirling ways and literally locks up Takanari in a basement so his engagement to Haine meets with no resistance. But wait! Shizumasa collapses suddenly! He has leukemia* and needs Takanari's bone marrow to live. The engagement papers, or ceremony, or whatever it was going to be, will have to wait. In a chapter note, Tanemura says, "Now, just because I like Takanari, it doesn't mean that Haine and Takanari will get togeth--mumble, mumble, mumble." Now I don't know if my bet from my review of the previous volume will pay out. I suppose it will depend on who Haine's hormones decide she is in love with in the last few pages of the last chapter. :P

*we've known for quite some time that he is ill, but there's been no hint that it was cancer.
This chapter [Ch. 42] was full of all sorts of no-nos for me, like many of the other chapters... But "drawing what I'm not good at drawing" is my hidden agenda behind The Gentlemen's Alliance.
How interesting. It goes a long way to explaining some of the more extreme content in the story, and, perhaps, some of the stumbles that have been made along the way. This was Tanemura's fourth full-length series, I believe, and it's cool that she is expanding her horizons, trying new things, even if at times it isn't 100% successful.

In one of the volumes I read recently (I didn't mark it with a sticky note so don't remember which), Tanemura says that she gradually lightened Shizumasa's hair after it was revealed that he had a body double. That's actually a very clever way of making what could be a confusing story element more understandable for her audience. The entire series is full of "light and darkness" motifs, public personae and people who live in their shadow, body doubles, twins, children with two mothers or two dads (not both, that would be a little too silly imo), etc. and it's pretty amazing that I haven't had any trouble sorting them out.

The bizarre elements like Maora's sheep, the snakes out of nowhere, Haine's false teeth (every time I think of that, it's just so odd I have to chuckle), etc. have faded into the background, which is all to the good for this story, in my opinion. (Haine's real teeth show up in a panel or two in v. 9, closing out that part of the story, I hope.)

On to the endgame! Place your own bets, if you like.

This was garbage in the funny, goofy way I loved from the first volumes. Like, the Togu family keeps having twins and always has one as a double? Sure. Toya betrayed Takanari for no reason? Wonderful. Shizumasa being a dick? I'm livid but also eating it up? Bitch got leukemia? SURE. Toya didn't actually betray Takanari but was actually being a double agent. I GUESS. This was great and funny and I'm excited to read the final volume and get back into this flow

Students attending the Imperial Academy are placed in a hierarchical order based on their parents' income and social standing. Haine is in the bronze class and is not even allowed to interact with the highest gold class - yet the gold class is reserved for the head of the school council, also known as the Emperor, who happens to be the one Haine has set her heart on. When chance allows for her to join the school council, she finds that now that she can finally speak to the Emperor, he does not seem very willing to do so.

I wish I could cover The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross with praise - yet if I try to describe it in a few words I'd come up with chaotic, illogical and terrible humour. From the time of its release, it has been my least favourite series (one-shots not included) by Arina Tanemura and has yet held that position. It's a bit of a modern take on Cinderella with a school for a backdrop that could have taken many routes - but it seems to have gone all over the place.

Let's start with my biggest peeve - where does this all take place? Judging by the names and clothing, it can only be Japan - or a pseudo-Japan? Because although it reflects our contemporary time in many ways, many of the social norms make no sense. Haine is given up for adoption in exchange for 50 million yen, the school's hierarchy seems absolute - you can't talk with people in higher classes and you can rise up in class if your parents pay enough money. Teachers barely seem present, it's like the students run the school in which gang fights are a thing. There's a lot of family abuse going on and people can be proclaimed dead without any investigation, there are forced marriages and just so many extremes. If this were a fantasy setting I wouldn't have minded - fictional worlds can have any rules. But in the setting in which it's presented, it just caused too much disbelief in me.

With that off my chest, let's go back to the beginning. Although the school's concept could have proven an interesting story, it's barely relevant. The plot consists of the characters' dilemmas - and boy are there many. There is not a single character with a normal life that isn't frightfully melodramatic. Let's look at Haine; she's cute but also an ex-yankee/gangster who can easily beat someone silly (why are there knife and snake fights at school again?). She became a yankee because she wanted to prove that she's not worth anything - because, you know, her dad sold her and all. In her mind, her new adoptive family doesn't really want or need her, she's just a burden - so what better solution than to roam the streets at night looking for trouble.

Of course, her whole adoption thing proves to have much more to it, her father's just another tortured soul trying to do the right thing. Her mum goes half insane over it which, once again, didn't make any sense! She's had her teeth knocked out during her yankee-time and whenever her now fake-teeth come out, she goes all strangely berserk - hello humour, you almost made me smile.

Anyway, Haine goes into depression-phase multiple times throughout the story. There are many would-be-climaxes that are either resolved too fast or just interrupted so it could be resolved in a later volume. And because Haine's problems aren't enough, the author made sure that every.single.character. has at least as many to whine over.

If this story would have been much shorter, less wanna-be-depressing and either in a fictional setting or one that makes sense in our world, this could have been a decent story. The council was quite a nice set of characters. I like how they were all pretty different and became great friends.

Shizumasa, the Emperor, starts off as your standard stand-offish main guy but he turns out to be pretty interesting. I feel as though he actually had a legitimate reason to be a jerk to everyone and you know, he's the first to get over himself. His backstory is by far the most interesting and it led to interesting conflicts - it was pretty easy to root for him and hope for a happy ending.

So, while I could try to look past the many, many flaws and read on for the good aspects and hope for a happy end - I can say the ending was a happy one for the characters, if not for me. It was utterly unsatisfactory and pretty much cheats its way past the main obstacle that stands between Haine and Shizumasa. Why resolve the story's main conflict if you can simply ignore it and they all lived happily ever after!

Despite all, I still find myself reading this from time to time. Although most of it is spent shaking my head, there must be enough good in it to make me reread it.

Meinung

This explores Shizumasa's character a lot and explains a lot but still didn't hit me in the feels. Probably because he's really not in the series that much.. I think the back story would have been better revealed earlier so we could actually better sympathize with him instead of Takanari

There are an unbelievable amount of “coincidences” and twists in this story. It’s like a VC Andrews story… Everything is so goddamn dramatic now and I almost don’t care what happens in the end…

The next volume is the last, I'm running out of manga! NOOOOOO!
Anyways, this was a good installment! I was so happy that Haine finally chose Takanari! But I think it's all a setup. I think Shuzu mom purposely sent her there, knowing that he would reject her because the doctor told Takanari about Shuzu's bone marrow problem! I think it was all a set up because the whole family is messed up. I was so angry that he rejected her. I hope Haine keeps fighting. But if Takanari is giving the bone marrow, then Shizu will live. I don't really like him so I wouldn't care if he died. But it might be too late so Takanari wants Shuzu to have at least a few days with Haine and if Shuzu dies then Takanari will be head and he will be with Haine. So even if Shuzu does marry Haine, Takanari will be with her eventually.
Arina Tanemura said that she'd make sure that you wouldn't have to come up with your own ending, that all problems would be solved. And there's only three chapters! Wah! I'm betting Shuzu will die and Takanari will be with Haine. And then everyone else will couple up.
I just have to say that there are too many problems in this manga. Like all the relationship, family, financial, and so many other problems; I think it's all too much for one manga series. I'm glad that it's ending because I want to reread everything so I can try to remember everything. It's too much to memorize and keep up with.....
I love this series though, can't wait for the last!

Now that Haine's family drama is resolved, we finally get to focus in the Tofu brothers in this volume. Man, their family is messed up. Keeping doubles locked up because one mine get sick from inbreeding? Its just so sad. And I feel bad for the brothers becayse their closeness was stripped away from them.

I have to say, I am so glad Haine finally stood up and made a decision, realizing that she really is in love with Taka. And of course, Shizun interrupts them at the worst possible time.

I can't figure Shizun out - at first he seemed like the evil twin, out to lock up his brother and make Haine marry him. Then it comes out that he has cancer, that he is pretty much trying to kill himself so Taka can live his life. But it still feels false to me - I feel like Shuzun is settling Taka up, getting him to tell Haine he doesn't love her, so she'll be open to a relationship with him. And wouldnt Shizun's mother know if he was that sick? But maybe I'm wrong.

I guess I'll find out in the next volume. In the meantime, I'm really happy that the rest of the council finally knows about the double, that their real friend is Taka. They deserved to know, especially Maguri.

2021: I do own this entire series now. Haha!

2009: i found the rest of the series online, oh but i most defiantly plan on buying it when it comes out. reading comics online gives me a headache. lame. anywho- haine makes her choice, oh and it was who i was rooting for! yay! but as soon as she makes her decision, she waivers a bit. she then reaffirms her choice, but then waivers again. i just wanted to strangler her a bit; stick to your choice! still, happy ending. loved it sooo much!
when i was reading it, i kept thinking of fruits basket. being trapped in a cage, insurmountable guilt, a family that kept marrying within the family... fruits basket. but i guess it's okay.

Takanari wants Haine to choose between him and Shizumasa. Togu betrayed Takanari and led Shizumasa to them. Haine is in love with Takanari, but can't marry him because he doesn't officially exist and Shizumasa has his death certificate. Shizumasa and Haine are engaged and due to be married after graduation. Shizumasa has leukemia and has decided to die, Takanari feels guilty and wants to do a bone marrow transplant with him, so he lies to Haine so she won't rescue him.

I really didn't care for this volume. Haine's bipolar tendencies were super obnoxious... so much so that even the mangaka HERSELF complained about it!

I don't even care about the relationships anymore. I know it's going to end happy no matter how distressing Tanemura-san makes it seem. I'm also sort of over how the "bad" characters were all actually good and some of the "good" characters were actually bad.

I'm happy there is only one volume left.

Okay, Shiizun is turning into a creep, but apparently has some reason for it if the backstory is any indication. Still majorly wrong, but it's nice to know more about the source of all this. Haine just can't seem to get out of the cross hairs in any of this. It's surprising how many people, even inside the family, are wanting to help the two, but somehow everything still falls apart in the end. It's getting a little predictable in that way.

I typically really like Tanemura's work, but this one is just... not something I am enjoying.

On an academic level I suppose I'm intrigued by the commentary on how twins are treated in some societies, but even that is not enough to make this series much worth my interest. Almost done, though, so I suppose I'll finish it just to say I did.
