Hauptkommissar Jan Fabel aus Hamburg wird von seinem Kölner Kollegen Benni Scholz um Hilfe gebeten. In Köln sorgt ein Serientäter für Angst und Schrecken. Immer zur Karnevalszeit schlägt er zu und schneidet seinen Opfern ein Stück Fleisch aus dem Gesäß. Jan Fabel, der eigentlich bald seinen Job als Polizist an den Nagel hängen will, macht sich auf den Weg nach Köln...

Ein sehr spannender und rasanter Thriller mit einem Thema, das für Gänsehaut sorgt: Kannibalismus. Teilweise ist es ganz schön harter Stoff, der hier verarbeitet wurde, aber er macht das Buch auch unglaublich spannend!
Auch die verschiedenen Handlungsstränge, die sich zum Ende hin immer mehr miteinander verknüpfen, sorgen für eine hohe Spannungskurve.
Die Figuren wirken echt und lebendig, und besonders Jan Fabel ist mir mit seiner nordischen Natur sehr sympathisch.
Es ist sicherlich ein Vorteil, wenn man die Vorgänger dieses Romans kennt, aber es ist kein Muss. Ich selbst kenne die Vorgänger nicht und konnte mich trotzdem gut in die Geschichte hineinversetzen. Die Handlung ist nachvollziehbar und durchdacht.
Für mich steht fest, dass ich auf jeden Fall noch andere Bücher von Craig Russell lesen werde!

Buying a book, starting it, putting it away for some time (8 years lol), and then reading it again - that kind of book was this for me. Some of the main characters were Ukrainian, with some Russian influence, which was quite unexpected and made it special that I happened to pick up this book again during the time of war. All in all, the overall plot (and twist) were well-found, but I was distracted by character descriptions and confusing side plots.

After the last book Jan Fable police commissioner in Hamburg has decided to quit his career as a policeman and yet in last days in office he is being asked to become a member of a national police-force that is aimed at solving the kind of weird and strange crimes he has been solving in Hamburg. The first possible serial killer has been known to kill and maim women every year with Carnaval in Cologne. Jan is not very motivated but yet his collegae Maria Klee who has been physically hurt by an Ukrainian criminal and then mentally by a serial Killer who turned out to be very close to her person has dropped of the world. He quickly finds out that the Ukrainian criminal has moved his operation to Cologne and his friend and partner Maria is suspected to be tracking him and taking her revenge personally. So Jan travels to Cologne to find his friend under the guise of a criminal investigation for the BKA (Bundes Kriminal Ambt a sort of German FBI).
In Cologne finds himself becoming drawn into the investigation of this very lethal Karnaval Killer and at the same time Maria Klee finds herself shadowing Ukrainian criminals in order to find their boss so she can take him out for ever.
At the same time a special team is being send from Ukraine to take out this criminal whose history lies in the special forces of this former Sovjet empire.
The stories advance nicely along each other and the writer manages to surprise the reader often enough to enjoy this excellent thriller. Your learn about the kind of crime that is central in this story and also about the history of Karnaval in Cologne.
A very well written and well choreographed story that does keep you guessing until the end and is once again a tour-de-force by this good writer.

The German TV has already filmed several episodes of this book series and I was lucky to catch a later story which I still have to read.

As for Karnaval in Cologne I once had the pleasure and it is very colourful and an immersing experience that can only be enjoyed by somebody who enjoys the celebrations. This book made me reconsider joining the celebrations next year.

A great book that should be read in sequence as published as the main characters are growing into this situation.

4º libro que leo de este autor. En líneas generales es entretenido pero la resolución de los casos me ha parecido muy rápida. Uno de los casos esta relacionado con el del primer libro " Muerte en Hamburgo", el cual para mi sigue siendo el mejor de los que he leído. En este libro la acción tiene lugar en Colonia y en la celebración del carnaval en dicha ciudad, siendo este si caso principal. Leeré el siguiente. 6/10

แต่ก็อ่านนะ อ่านแล้วรู้ว่าเนื้อเรื่องมันสนุกนะ น่าติดตามอ่ะ
อรรถรสอาจลดลงตรงสำนวนแปล
พอมาเล่มนี้ ต้องบอกว่าได้อรรถรสขึ้นเยอะ แปลดี รู้เรื่องเลย
แต่มีพลาดเรื่องพิสูจน์อักษร พิมพ์ผิดบ้าง ตกหล่นบ้าง เครื่องหมายคำพูดหายบ้าง

I really like the Jan Fabel series and Craig Russell's writing style. My main criticism of this book is the shift in focus from Fabel and his Hamburg beat to his damaged subordinate Anna, and the Cologne setting where Fabel meets again the Ukrainian gang boss with the magnetic blue-green eyes from the first book. There just isn't enough Fabel and the parts about Anna, the Ukrainians and bodybuilder Andrea didn't make up for his absence. I did enjoy finding out about carnival in Cologne, however.

Cannibalism is the theme this time, and it makes for disturbing reading! Trigger warnings, too, for an eating disorder and body dysmorphia. To be honest, I found these aspects of the story uncomfortable reading in a different way to the cannibalism and sex fetishism, voyeuristic and clumsily handled. What happens with Maria, too, seems more driven by plot requirements than anything else. Fabel's ongoing crisis of faith in his role as a policeman, however, is gripping and satisfying, though I still find it hard to care whether or not he stays with Susannah, his psychologist girlfriend.

I want to know what happens next to Fabel so I am moving on to the next in the series immediately. Not that I can believe Fabel will give up his vocation to sell computer software and schmooze international clients.

Και ξεκινάω....
Παλιά στο Τέξας,έψαχνα μια χιουμοριστική εικόνα DC/marvel με σεξοχιουμορ. Όχι πορνό. To ξεκαθαρίζω. Αναμεσα στις εικόνες βγάζει μια She(male) Hulk σε vore eating πορνοκομιξ. Αφού τα έντερα γίνονται κοκορέτσι και επλυνα τα ματχια μου με χλωρίνη ,το απώθησα.
Ε και τι μας το λες ρε συ ,θα μου πείτε τώρα. Οοοοοοοχι φίλε/η συναναγνωστη/στρια. Θα τα ακούσεις όλα. Τζάμπα ψυχανάλυση και αφού βρήκαμε παπά,θα θάψουμε πεντέξι. Φτάνουμε στο εν λόγω βιβλίο. Με τις πρώτες σελίδες λέω "Δεν ξεκιναμε Καλά...." Δυο αστυνομικές υποθέσεις πλεγμενες αριστοτεχνικά μεταξύ μας. Ναι,διάβασα το τέλος,αλλά οκ,δεν προβλεψα τίποτα απο την πλοκή. Στο τέλος βγαίνει η αντρογυναικα σε φάση και γω χορευω μόνος,γιατιμαι ο δολοφόνος. Έμαθα πρώτη φορά ότι υπάρχει η βορολαγνεια,που την ανεμειξε με μια εσάνς κανιβαλισμου. Γιατί ρε φίλε? Τι σου έκανα? Ενα αστυνομικό ήθελα να δγιαβασω η καψερη και με προσγειωσες με ταχύτητα φωτός. Αυτά απο μένα. Και τώρα παω να κοιμηθώ με ανοιχτό το φως. Παρα την ανώμαλη,νοσηρή φαντασία του κυρίου,το βιβλίο ειναι εξαιρετικό. Και παρα το ενοχλητικό θεμα που πιάνει,σε κρατάει μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα.

Another in this highly engaging series of police procedurals based in Germany. Although I enjoyed it very much I did wonder if the narrative was a little too divided between the Carnival murders and the quest on the part of the special forces group, Fabel's colleague and finally Fabel himself to bring to ground Vasyl Vitrenko, the Ukrainian baddie who has been Fabel's nemeses since the first novel in the series.

Still by the final pages both plot strands were brought to a satisfying conclusion with some very clever twists. Craig Russell also did a great job of capturing the world-turned-upside-down atmosphere of Cologne's Carnival. Some aspects of the murders are quite gruesome and did nothing to assuage my Coulrophobia.

The way this book was written is a quite interesting form. A lot of threads make it more curious. A place wherein an action is taking place is Koln. An author shows us a police work really precisely. I think that's exactly what make me feel to read more his book. Just a good describing the way of a protagonist's job. I would say, the further you go, the harder you break away of it. Russell introduced us a good crime story.

Ich lese nur selten Thriller, weil ich sie mir oft zu übertrieben sind in Sachen Handlung, Protagonisten und Setting. Aber ab und zu mache ich eine Ausnahme, so zum Beispiel bei der Reihe von Craig Russell um den Hamburger Kommissar Jan Fabel.

Die Krimis/Thriller gefallen mir vor allem aufgrund der Hauptfigur Jan Fabel: seine eher trockene, jedoch nicht übertriebene Art, ohne dass der Charakter langweilig wird. Außerdem mag ich es, dass die Figuren an sich wichtig sind dieser Serie. Sie entwickeln sich weiter, ich als Leser erfahre mit der Zeit immer mehr über sie und sie wirken doch recht realistisch. Eine Besonderheit ist zudem, dass Jan Fabel ein Faible für Geschichte hat und ich tatsächlich auch etwas bei der Mörderjagd lerne. Auch bei diesem Buch 😊. Einen kleinen Wehmutstropfen gibt es jedoch schon, wobei, vielleicht auch zwei.

Für meinen Geschmack gibt es in diesem Buch zu viele Nebenhandlungen, die zwar teilweise wichtig sind, meinen Lesefluss aber störten bzw. teilweise sich dadurch die Handlung sehr zieht. Eine Nebenhandlung habe ich tatsächlich auch nur überflogen, wenn ich ehrlich bin. Ich vermute, dadurch sollte die Spannung erhöht werden, aber am Ende war ich mir teilweise nicht mehr sicher, welchen schrägen Charakter ich gerade vor mir habe. Ferner mochte ich die Figur des Benni Scholz nicht. Ich fand ihn plump, fast schon proletenhaft an mancher Stelle. Vermutlich war dies aber genauso gewollt als Kontrast zum eher kühlen Jan. Insgesamt jedoch ein guter Krimi, wenn mir auch die Vorbände besser gefallen haben.

Like the ones before this, it was a really good book! Although I felt like this book wasn’t as much about the carnival guy as it was about vitrenko. I would’ve liked it if it was more about the actual case but I must say I thought the development with vitrenko was even more interesting than the case they were working on! When Maria shot vitrenko I had a smile on my face and I had hoped for him to die so that made me very happy. Andrea being the clown was something I never considered throughout this book and it was a good twist.

The only reason I’m giving 4* instead of 5* is the fact that I felt like the book should’ve concentrated on either one of the plots more

Ο τρόπος που σκοτώνει ο κλόουν θα σας ανατριχιάσει, αλλά δεν λέω παραπάνω για να μην κάνω spoiler. Κάποια στιγμή δεν θα ξέρετε ποιος είναι ποιος. Κάποιοι θέλουν να ξεφύγουν από τον εαυτό τους και να γίνουν κάποιοι άλλοι. Όμως θα βρουν έτσι τον τρόπο να λυτρωθούν ή θα υπογράψουν την καταδίκη τους;

Μεγάλη αγωνία, σκληρές σκηνές και πρόσωπα κρυμμένα πίσω από μάσκες. Στην τελική αναμέτρηση, ο Φάμπελ με τον αδίστακτο Βασιλιά του Καρναβαλιού.

Un policial lleno de suspenso, misterio, peligros y giros de trama que te vuelan la cabeza desde el principio.
La forma en la que cada caso se resuelve, el nivel de detalle en las patologías, definiciones psíquicas y lo grotesco de los crímenes hacen de éste un gran libro.
Ahora quedé tan bien impresionado que tengo ganas de leerme toda la saga y le tengo altas expectativas.

This book was quite disappointing and so many times I wanted to quit reading it. There was so many character descriptions that for half the book there didn't seem to be a lot going on but backstories. Also, there was two main stories going on and what I thought the book would be about kinda took a backseat to the other. Not one of my favorites.

Z twórczością Russella zetknęłam się po raz pierwszy mniej więcej w tym samym czasie, kiedy zaczęłam poznawać powieści Chattama. Od samego początku Russell posługiwał się słowem pisanym gorzej od swojego kolegi po fachu, jednak była to różnica nieznaczna. Tymczasem teraz aż przykro się patrzy, jak Chattam miażdży Brytyjczyka.

Nie rozumiem, czemu autor uparł się, żeby prowadzić równolegle dwa główne wątki. Akcja jest tak rozproszona, że aż się to wszystko źle czyta. Wątek dotyczący kanibala-zabójcy został potraktowany zupełnie bo łebkach, a szkoda, bo miał spory potencjał. Nie oczekiwałam wprawdzie niczego wywrotowego (umówmy się – Lecter jest tylko jeden i nikt nie jest w stanie mu podskoczyć), ale karnawałowa otoczka do tej historii naprawdę dobrze rokowała. Niestety – nie wyszło. Natomiast wątek związany z Witrenką jest najzwyczajniej w świecie nudny. Rumieńców nabiera dopiero pod koniec, ale jednocześnie autor wyrabia niestworzone rzeczy z postacią Marii, co nie do końca mnie przekonuje. Przy okazji – jeśli dobrze pamiętam, Maria w jednym zdaniu została chyba przechrzczona na Martę…

To, co zawsze było świetne u Russella, a więc profile psychologiczne bohaterów, teraz ma bardzo zróżnicowany poziom. Niektóre postacie zostały nakreślone bez ładu i składu, poziom konstrukcji innych leciał z kolei sinusoidą. Niewielu jest bohaterów, którzy faktycznie zasługują na uwagę. Naszemu głównemu bohaterowi też nieźle się w główce poprzestawiało. Nie będę spoilerować, ale będąc w związku, nie kierowałabym się zasadą „Wszystkie grzechy i szaleństwa Szalonych Dni zostają spalone”.

Nie byłabym sobą, gdybym w przypadku tego cyklu nie wspomniała o okładce. Cóż, „Mistrz karnawału” wypada zdecydowanie lepiej niż „Zmartwychwstały”, ale zachwytów z mojej strony raczej nie będzie. Usprawiedliwieniem może być jednak fakt, iż okładka oryginału też nie powala na kolana. Przy okazji porównania polskiej wersji z oryginałem – bardzo przyjemne tłumaczenie, zdecydowanie mi odpowiadało.

Zaczynam mieć poważne wątpliwości, czy dobrze robiłam, kolekcjonując Cykl hamburski i nie czytając go na bieżąco. Skusiły mnie dwie pierwsze części przygód Jana Fabla, które były świetne. This fourth installment in the Jan Fabel series is one of the strongest in the series - and definitely a vast improvement over the third entrant, Eternal. The varied elements and strings of the stories mold together to create a riveting - and at times, horrifying - whole. Cannibalism runs rampant throughout the book - both its history, and some more modern, criminal applications - so this novel probably isn’t the best choice for reading while eating anything. Weak-stomached readers most likely will not appreciate the topic, either. Russell manages to maintain a rather nauseating tone to nearly the entire book. But is so well-written and well-crafted that they will be missing out!

The plot is simply handled beautifully. Russell offers a variety of plausible suspects, and still manages to keep rolling out surprises until the very end of the book. This book also fully brings back Vitrenko, from Blood Eagle. Though many of the significant events are covered here, it would still be best to read this series in order for maximum enjoyment. Other main characters, not just the series’ main character, Jan, continue to develop here. Maria Klee, in particularly, plays a prominent role. The setting largely shifts for the majority of this book from Hamburg to Cologne, which gives the book a surprisingly different flavor to it. It’s a fascinating series overall, and this addition is simply one of my favorites in the series. It is so well done! I am looking forward to the fifth book in the series!
