Fourteen song parodies about parents and children, including "They're Always on the Cell" (to the tune of "Farmer in the Dell"), "Watch Dad Exercise" (to the tune of "Do Your Ears Hang Low?"), "Dressed Up is Messed Up" (to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"), and "Too Much Kissing" (to the tune of "Rock-a-bye Baby").
The guilt! Nothing makes you feel you're a horrible parent like a song parody to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" called "My Mother Just Rushes Through Bedtime" (My mother just zips right through bedtime. With books, she turns pages by twos. While she races out to watch prime time, I lie in the dark so confused.) Like a knife in the heart!!!! There's another called "They're Always on the Cell" to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell" which stings a bit as well. I guess other parents do this stuff too or there wouldn't be a book about it. But still. I don't appreciate it.
It is a small consolation that the illustrations are hideous.
I was hoping for something a little cuter and more for the younger. A few too many topics out of reach for my SD--and the "rebellious" nature of a couple aren't quite what she's ready for in making sense of her different situation. Maybe when she's older.
I didn't like it much. I really like Alan Katz, but as I tried to read/sing these songs, the cadence was off. I know it can't always be perfect, but it was just not working for me.
This book has many songs and chants that contain rhyming schemes, and other forms of poetry. This book would be great for shared reading between children because some of the poems/songs have roles.
