A fine book. I like the point that Thesiger makes when he says the designer and the needle pointer should be one

"Needlepoint is one of the most persistent forms of self-expression, an outlet for the creative instinct that is so strong in everyone, and for it adequately to fulfil this purpose designer and worker should if possible be one and the same person ; at any rate they should be strongly in sympathy." p.9

Mostly black and white pictures, but excellent and clear ones. Some great suggestions about finding shapes and patterns in every day things like birds and platters of fishes.

I was delighted to find this book at the Univ of MN library. Ernest Thesiger played Dr. Pretorius in Bride of Frankenstein and steals every scene he's in. A WWI vet who was wounded. He taught embroidery to rehabbing vets in WWII.

This is a lovely, lovely book. For those who don't know, Ernest Thesiger was a British actor, and accomplished water colorist and needlepoint/embroidery worker. For most Americans, one of his best known roles was that of Dr. Pretorius in "The Bride of Frankenstein".

I bought this book for my sister-in-law and fell in love with it myself.

It has many photographs of lovely needlework. For the record, this isn't a how to book, but more like a showcase.
