In this book, I read "The Calling of Emily Evans". It was a story about a young bible student, Emily, who was called into the ministry. The story is based on The Missionary Church(formerly the Mennonite Brethren in Christ) in the Canadian West District. Emily was sent to establish a church in a small town in the west, in the Canadian prairie, and she did that. This story tells of her many hardships, being near starvation, enduring freezing winters, living in a small parsonage connected to the church, which used to be a pool hall.
There were many stories about families, both small and large, and how some came to Jesus Christ the Lord, but some did not. The people were mostly farmers, and they shared their crops with Emily, sometimes as just a neighborly gift, sometimes in place of money in the collection plate.
What made me like this the most was, the amount of Gospel truth and bible fact that Janette Oke put in the story. I wish today's Christian authors would write like Mrs. Oke did. In this story, you're going to learn how to be born again, and isn't that the unveiled mystery of the Gospel, that we're supposed to tell everyone about, when we use the talents GOD gave us?
I do hope you'll take time to read this story, "The Calling of Emily Evans". It's a great historical fiction novel, with a clear message for everyone.

In my opinion, this book was very fun to read and unlike any book that I’ve read before. It makes the Pioneer times, a topic I don’t usually care for, seem very interesting. I thought that this book was very refreshing and real, because it wasn’t about monsters or heroes or spells. It was about family, love, and hard times that call for hard decisions. The role models were amazing in this book, especially Julia, who teaches you that God will take care of you and that all you have to do is listen. She also teaches that your job isn’t to judge, but to help people. It talks a lot about faith and leaving things to God. There was nothing in this book that would be concerning to parents. I would recommend this book to eleven year-olds and up, because some of the language might be too difficult for a nine or ten year-old.

As with the majority of Janette Oke's books, I found this one to be enjoyable as well. In facing difficult circumstances.....Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
