Man To Man

Rate this book
Josh Elliot was sick of a nine to five office job and the bad romance that had gone with it. Breaking up after a six month relationship with Luis, his partner and co-worker, Josh decided to make a total change in his life. Yearning the sun and sand, Josh tested to become a Los Angeles County lifeguard.

Tanner Cameron was a permanent lifeguard and had made a career out of life-saving and being a paramedic. Divorced for a year after a five year marriage that ended badly, Tanner was trying to be content with his job and stayed away from the advances of the women he worked with. It seemed to Tanner that all the young ladies he met wanted marriage and babies, two things he no longer felt as essential. But Tanner was alone, and not happy about it.

When Josh is assigned to Tanner during his mentorship program, Josh instantly falls for the tall, handsome guard in the red swimsuit. The only problem is, Tanner is straight. Very straight. And constantly reminds Josh of that fact when Josh's flirting gets carried away.

The attraction and admiration Josh feels for Tanner soon sweeps him away. In a job where distractions can be fatal, Josh and Tanner struggle to keep their focus on the job as the chaos of nearly sixty million visitors flood the California coastline.

As Josh’s good looks and seduction tactics begin to find a way through Tanner’s barrier of fear and intimidation, Josh finally makes some headway with the straight stud. But soon Josh wonders if all his efforts are in vain. Tanner is straight and always will be, and any hope Josh has to change him seem insurmountable. Or are they?

Can Tanner get over the terror of the label he fears the most and open up his heart to the right partner? Or will he be unable to rescue his heart from a charming lifeguard whose idea of bliss is working it out, man to man?

A REALLY NICE GFY READ!
Sigh...I loved this one...

I think I've read quite a number of M/M Roms with GFY themes already, and I can say that I like this more than some of them. Tanner's attraction to Josh and his revelation of his sexuality was convincing, natural, and quite accurate. I loved this read's take on that.

Tanner & Josh

Aside from that I really liked both Tanner and Josh. They had hot chemistry. Even though Tanner was always tentative, their scenes were still hot. C'mon! Two hot lifeguards! It's meant to be hot.

One thing that maybe you won't like about this is it's a little cheesy. But after what I've been reading before this, I WANT CHEESE. I NEED CHEESE. And this delivered.

I really really like this! A RECOMMENDED Sweet, hot, and feel good fluff read! A great starter for those who want to enter the M/M Rom genre.

Thank you Sunne for suggesting me to read this next! It was exactly what I needed!

I've had a few problems with this book.
First; I didn't like Josh's attitude - oh, he's straight, that only makes it sweeter. He kept pushing without asking if it's okay, and then acting all embarrassed when it was too late. It seemed abusive and as much as I'd liked him as a character, it left a bitter taste.
Second; I agree it's to early to accept you might be gay in one week. What bothered me with Tanner was that he obviously got an erection, thought Josh was hot and didn't discourage any of his advances. He enjoyed them and still managed to ask himself - am I sick? Why is being gay sick? It just clashed with everything else that was happening and it struck a cord with me. It almost felt like the author wasn't sure what the character should have a problem with and jumbled everything and anything in his self-doubts.
Third; this is the reason why I ended up going with two instead of three stars - How can anyone, and especially someone who has known he was gay all his life, demand of his -up to a week ago -'straight' lover to out himself? Josh basically said, either you tell everyone at work you're gay or we are finished. First off, that's blackmail and I would have dumped him so fast his head would have spun. Second, isn't it understandable to give the man some time, since you managed to convert him from being straight to gay in one week? Third, the guy just told you he loved you the night before, and already the next day you're asking him to change his whole life so that it could be easier on you? I think it's unfair, rude and frankly disrespectful. Certainly not an action of someone who is so deeply in love as Josh kept saying he was.

It annoyed me to no end, but I liked the surroundings, the seduction and the overall theme. That's why it was really difficult to rate this book with 2 stars. Still, I don't think previously stated events were right and with that in mind, this is a 2 star read for me.

Since this review is pretty negative, I'm stating again that this is just my opinion and not a direct criticism to the author or an instruction for you to buy or not to by this book.

Ugh, this book just reminded me of how this is just not the author for me!

First off, we have Josh, who just came on WAY too strong. Seriously, sexual harassment territory, right here. Of course, Tanner was the king of mixed signals, but Josh still should have backed right the hell off after the first (or the second. or the third) time Tanner said he wasn't gay. And seriously, having a supposedly "innocent" conversation with the guy, and all the while you have your hand down your shorts under the table?? Talk about inappropriate!

But I guess it wasn't so wrong, because it worked. Tanner was attracted to Josh, although he didn't want to be. He didn't want to be, but then his reasonings why being with a guy might be ok? Oh, we like the same things, and I don't have to worry about knocking a guy up? Seriously? What guy has ever used THAT as a motivation to get fucked?

I love yous were exchanged far too quickly (in just a week, on Josh's part!), and then Josh had NO patience with Tanner, wanting him to come out pretty much immediately.

Yep, this book just pissed me off pretty much from beginning to end.

Why did I waited so long to read this one!

This is the kind of books I like: a gay for you story with funny repartee, situations and characters which I do not expect. The sexual tension between Josh and Tanner is intense from the start and the author managed to brought it to higher level.

Tanner is completely lost in this new situation: recently divorced and knowing exactly what he expects from his life and what he does not! And the sexy Josh arrives, comes boldly on to him and the straight guy realizes that he loves it. It's hard to accept: life is not a straight road to follow, there are many bifurcations that can also lead us to happiness. He just have to dive into the unknown and it is frightening, but often it's worth the try.
Josh surprised me by his extreme sensitivity and his great patience. He is a loveable person.I fell for him and at times I would have liked to be in place of Tanner and be subject to such devotion (just kidding!).

Amazing story and I'm going for the sequels immediatly!

Enjoyed this until towards the end when Josh started pressuring Tanner to go public with their relationship. Much as I could understand where Josh was coming from, my sympathies lay with Tanner (or is that only because I'm not gay?). As Tanner put it, they'd only been going at it (the
gay thing') for a week and it was unreasonable of Josh to threaten to break up with Tanner because he wasn't ready to switch from straight to gay.

So I ended the story wondering what Tanner saw in Josh beyond a good-looking guy that he ended up allowing himself to be forced into making their relationship public so soon. Still, this book was better than the last couple of Hausers I'd read. 3 and a half stars.

If you are a fan of the gay for you trope you will most likely find this book enjoyable. I don't like GFY so I hated it. But barring my dislike for GFY it was an OK book.

This book did not keep my attention at all; I kept putting it down to do other things like watch "Oblivion" with Tom Cruise, which sucked ass. Then I slept all day yesterday instead of reading. Not good at all.

First off, Josh Elliott started out with a strike against him since I don't like the real life Josh Elliott who abandoned Good Morning America for NBC. Never did like that smug bastard. But I digress, big time. LOL

I liked the banter and teasing between Josh and Tanner. I don't know how much money life guards make but it seemed odd that Josh would leave his job to be a lifeguard, unless he comes from money. I'll Google that later. So Josh leaves one on-the-job relationship just to start up another one at his new place of employment, nice!

Tanner kept bitching about his ex-wife. Why did he marry her in the first place? What did he ever see in her? I won't continue on with this series.

This is a little like reading a Baywatch episode, without all the depth. (At least the Hoff's character in Baywatch used to be a Navy Seal) . But this book is hard for me to rate, because it wasn't like I was misled. I wanted a light read and this provided it. This is a summer beach read story about a man Josh and his very aggressive quest to turn lifeguard Tanner gay (otherwise known as a GFY story or a homophobic man's nightmare -HMN?). Or for those less cynical than myself, a story of 'true love' between Josh & Tanner achieved in a very timely 7 days.

Suspend all belief (the man did quit his job to become a lifeguard--permanently!), don't worry about Josh getting straight man Tanner to out himself as a gay man in under 10 days and you'll find this a fairly enjoyable read. I'll probably get the firemen story next when I'm in the mood for another light read.

Tanner is a handsome, straight lifeguard whose life is good. Women, sun, water, what's not to like? Josh is a new recruit , a little brash, a bunch gay, and assigned to Tanner for training on the beach. Josh is a terrible flirt, and Tanner finds himself reminding the cute young man that he is straight, happy with his life, and doesn't mess around on the job with co-workers.

These two guys are really some of the best characters Ms. Hauser has created. Tanner is a great guy - following his struggle to reconcile his attraction to Josh is fun, but you also sympathize with his misgivings on so many levels. Josh is a handful, and gives Tanner everything he can hope to handle.

I loved this book. Very fun and easy to read, as well as being amazingly sexy.

Good one, Ms. Hauser. I have re-read this one a couple of times, I enjoyed it so much!!!

Can I just say that I truly and honestly love Joshua? Like, irrationally so. He's so overtly sexual and completely seductive at first. You have no idea what a broken and insecure man he really is. It seems like his growing affection for Tanner just preoccupies his senses. Until he is reminded by his fellow coworkers what his past experiences has taught him. And he's still willing to torture himself because Tanner is just that important to him. What a great fluffalicious read. Chapters 8-9 nearly did me in. Good lord. I will never look at lifeguards the same again.

Okay, so I admit it, I like the hero theme. Reading about doctors or EMTs or firefighters - it's awesome. This is the first time I've read about lifeguards, though, and it was interesting! I liked that part of the plot, there's a lot of responsibility in doing this job, and it's definitely underrepresented - at least in the books I've bought so far.

Saying all that, I have to admit that while I enjoyed reading this book (it was nicely written and pretty solid altogether), I definitely wasn't head over heels because there were just too many things that bothered me. First of all, while Josh does his job well, he seemed a bit irresponsible at times - he definitely put his libido before his job in quite a few situations and that is not exactly a trait I admire. Especially, when it's your job to pay attention so that you can help if somebody needs it.
Then, the whole timeline given was incredibly short - and it seemed way too short for me, considering this is essentially a GFY story. Not very believable to me.
And to make matters worse, after this short time, Josh pretty much out of the blue starts making these rather ridiculous demands - mind you, I'm not saying they're ridiculous per se, they're actually perfectly justified, but given that Josh and Tanner were together for about a week, yes, that's what makes them ridiculous. That part kinda threw me off, unnecessary drama here we come. Urgh. And, seriously, And finally, Destiny's reaction in the end after all of her bitch fits throughout the book seemed rather unlikely to me.

So, yes, there's a lot of yammering from my side. However, despite all these things that really annoyed me, I enjoyed parts of this book quite a bit. The sex scenes were absolutely hot and, while I sometimes wanted to hit Josh, I kinda liked him and Tanner a lot of the time, too. Seems fair to round it up to three stars for that :-D

P.S. Oh, I just remembered another pet peeve: while Josh sucks Tanner off at some point, there's this line saying "as Josh showed him [Tanner] the benefits of loving someone of the same sex." What's that supposed to mean? Is being good at sucking a guy off restricted to the male demographic then? Can women not give good and enthusiastic head? ... I'd probably not have noticed that line if this hadn't bothered me in other books before - for my taste, women are a bit too often portrayed as rather rigid and unwilling to basically do anything besides the most basic sex acts (= missionary) and I do find that pretty offensive. I know that many books and authors don't do that and that this isn't what is insinuated here, but this particular line just reminded me of it and boy, am I going for a monologue here or what? I'm totally going to shut up now. Shutting up. :-D ... but please, authors, don't do that, alright?

So this was a GFY book in the extreme. I mean it is all about a super-hot gay guy trying to seduce a super-hot straight guy and then falling in love with him. That is usually a recipe for an angst-filled heart breaker with a miraculous HEA ending in the m/m romance world. This book is not really like that. Well maybe it is but it is so absurd along the way it doesn't really feel like it. It's very lighthearted really and for the most part the main characters are fun and sexy even if the overall plot is totally ludicrous. I guess I should have known based on the book cover - lol - I mean that is one ludicrous book cover eh?
If you look at the definition of ludicrous you will see it means so foolish or unreasonable or out of place as to be amusing. That is a really good adjective for this story. Honestly the GFY aspect of the story is more believable than the way the female lifeguards and female beach-goers are stalking the men. Add the prancing and the ass ogling on the sand and it's pretty over the top. Okay, if this review sounds like I didn't enjoy reading this story than I apologize because I did - it was highly entertaining. Ludicrous yes, but sexy, hot and fun enough that I didn't even care. I am totally gonna read the rest of this series!

My feelings about this book are very conflicted. Josh is described as a very attractive, masculine man over whom the ladies go wild, but then he acts like a middle school girl. He comes across as very slutty, but then you find out that he has only had a few lovers. He seems a little insecure about his budding relationship with straight guy Tanner, but then throws himself at Tanner to the point of almost stalking him.

There were times I thought this book couldn't get any more bizarre and then I'd catch myself empathizing with Josh. Sometimes Josh came across as a wacko, and I wanted to give him a swift kick, and other times I wanted to give him a hug.

Unfortunately, the wacko times out numbered the hugs. Although I cannot recommend this book, I'm not sorry I read the whole thing.

A wonderful jumping the fence, gay-for-you story featuring Tanner as the straight older man seduced by the adorable, irrepressible and very gay Josh. I must admit, the lifeguard premise made me hesitate to buy this book. Baywatch blowback, so not my thing, but I’m glad I finally relented. I do like an occasional laugh when I’m reading and G.A. Hauser has the touch. If you like this, don’t miss Two in Two Out, also by G.A. Hauser, for Hunter and Blake the firemen you meet as secondary characters here. Man to Man and Two In Two Out occur in tandem rather than consecutively, which I found intriguing and interesting.

Ok, I liked the characters on the whole; I liked the storyline on the whole; I liked the seduction on the whole, but... a straight man would never be comfortable with the touchy-feelyness such as Josh, the gay character, displayed. (Or maybe I'm just acquainted with men who would be downright uncomfortable.) So that didn't seem real for me. And really? A week? That's all Tanner gets to come to terms with his feelings when most LGBTQ people have YEARS to deal with coming out? So yeah, that didn't seem real for me either. Or fair.

And yet it was an enjoyable read, on the whole! ;)

Just re-read this book. It is one of my fave Hauser books ever!!!

I think I enjoy it so much because its such a different gay-for-you. Josh set out to seduce Tanner and played dirty LOL I love how outrageous he was and how blunt and honest he was with his desires.

Is this a practical story - hell no - in real life Josh would get his ass kicked.

But I think that is Hauser's talent. She makes the un-realistic seem real while you read.

I can suggest this one if you are in the mood for:

Hot BJ scenes
A Unique gay-for-you
Sexy Surf Lifesavers
with a dash of true love :P

A bit average GFY that had a lot of monologue and not really enough to cement a connection between the two characters. Josh came on a little strong to be believable and I hated that he expected Tanner to start waving the rainbow flag after just a week. Josh made it into an ultimatum which just pissed me off. Many times I found Josh too ridiculous and immature to be likeable. I've read much better GFY stories than this one.

Man to Man is probably the most traditional gay romance by G.A. Hauser I have read. There is still some of the elements that I usually find in one of her romances, like men who like sex for the pleasure of sex, and who are incredibly outrageous, but all in all, these two men are two romantic at heart.

Tanner, a lifeguard, is just out from a bad divorce and he doesn’t want to have a committed relationship any time soon. There is also the little problem that Tanner doesn’t want kids, that is the mainly reason for the failure of his marriage, and at 30 years old all the women who buzz around him seem primed for pregnancy. So basically Tanner is avoiding any relationship at all, and things work just fine at least till the day Josh enters his life.

Josh is 25 years old and in searching of a change in his life. A business degree on the shoulder and a year of work as white collar left him with a desire for something different. With the summer approaching, Josh decides to enlist to be a lifeguard and he is also very good at that. At first Tanner takes him under his wing thinking to have found a good work partner, but he doesn’t expect all the trouble Josh is bringing on.

Even if Josh behaves like an “easy” man, he is for real thirsty for love; all his previous relationships, three in totals, have always left him with a bitter taste in his mouth, and in the end, his partners have always taken advantage of him. Josh has never been the one in control, he was always the one who begged for love and only received sex. Just before meeting Tanner, Josh was considering the idea to try to have next a sex relationship instead of searching for love, and then here it’s Tanner, sexy and single. The little detail that Tanner is straight it’s not something Josh considers important, two of his three previous boyfriends pretended to be straight, and used Josh as hidden boy toy.

The problem is that Josh is totally unable to prevent to his heart to be involved and on the other side, Tanner is not a bad guy like his previous partners. Both men realize that they are venturing in dangerous waters, that their hearts are on stake, but the temptation is too much. There is a bit of "gay for you" in this novel, even if it doesn't bring along the usual angst; yes, Tanner is scared to "come out" as gay, he is still stuck with the definition of what is straight and what is gay, and he is maybe considering the option of bisexual, but all in all, he is not resisting so much or so strongly to the idea.

Usually I like the G.A. Hauser’s men since they are not likeable characters, they are whining, spoiled, vain… and they are adorable. Josh and Tanner have not the negative traits and all the positives, they are handsome, generous, devoted to their work and unable to have a relationship without commitment, even when they are both willing to have it. In a way they are so perfect that they should be unrealistic, but I was more in the mood to hug them, at least when they were not bad mouthing the women around them! Yes, that is another thing from the previous novels by G.A. Hauser that comes back again here, women don’t come out exactly in a positive way, even if, in the end, the author gave them a moment of redemption.

Tanner is a divorced, lonely lifeguard/paramedic living a solitary life after his divorce. He has a strong stance about never having children (his wife knew this before they married) but this caused paranoia and strife that eventually dissolved his marriage.

Josh is an unhappy office drone determined to get out in the sun and become a lifeguard. We also find out later that he is a dysfunctional gay boy with self-esteem issues and a long history of emotionally stagnate sexual relationships.

Although they both seem like stable men, once you get to know them it is obvious that they are both quite wobbly.

Josh is the most aggressive gay boy I have ever read when it comes to trying to seduce straight Tanner ... at least when they are together. He is so inappropriate in his affection and determination to “turn” Tanner that it is uncomfortable to watch. That Tanner is more flattered then appalled says a lot about how lonely Tanner is. In a rare gay-for-you move, I don’t recall Tanner having any flashback to a time when he had found other men attractive. Tanner is portrayed as truly straight. One reason Tanner considers taking Josh up on his offer is that he is lonely. Another is that he figures if he has any kind of sexual interaction with Josh he doesn’t have to worry about any accidental pregnancies.

Both of these men, with their dysfunctional reasons for gravitating toward one another, set themselves up for a lot of self doubt and reflection. As soon as Josh is no longer in touching distance of Tanner he has doubts and recriminations about always going after the straight guys who will never “turn” and want him back. As soon as Tanner is no longer in touching distance with Josh he wonders if having sex with a guy makes him gay. He also wonders if he is taking advantage of Josh because for most of the book he is not interested in returning most of the “favors” Josh gives Tanner.

Eventually they work through their self doubts and find that friendship, respect and sexual attraction are enough to take a chance on and it is touching to be a part of the process as a reader.

I know this sounds like I didn’t like the book, but taking into account the gay-for-you plot and the characters, I actually did like it. There were times I was uncomfortable. I did roll my eyes a time or two and I was ready to smack both boys once or twice, but in the best way possible. This is the kind of story that if it were real, would scare the hell out of any heterosexual guy if they read it because apparently with enough determination they can be “turned” from straight to bi-curios to gay.

Tanner and Josh do have a romantic HEA moment at the end of the book but I would love to see how this turns out farther into the relationship.

Minus a few typos that became more intrusive during the last third of the book, I thought it was a good m/m fantasy romance. I was attracted to it after reading two other m/m romances over the last two days, so I may be predisposed to like it.

SPOILERS ALERT
SPOILERS ALERT

The two main characters are well written: easy to visual, believable dialog, and engaged in a work situation any reader can follow. It's the 'but I didn't know I was gay' story line, but still enjoyable to watch how Josh seduces Tanner, and how conflicted Tanner is during said seduction. I only grew a little weary of Tanner constantly questioning his attraction every time they made a baby step forward. Their physical relationship was nicely developed. Oddly, I would have appreciated more work scenes although I know it only detracted from the 'romance' element. In the end, I was left wondering if the whole 'baywatch' theme was just a means of showcasing the suffering Josh must endure, and ...

Oops, almost gave too much away.

My only complaint was the writer's decision to have this play out so quickly over just a few weeks. But, I guess that is the fantasy romance part: they are swept away by passion.
(psst, my first goodreads review. hope I haven't broken any rules)

Amusing little story.

The overall plot is a little over the top and the amount of flirting that goes on between Tanner and Josh is so obvious, I don't understand why the entire beach isn't in on it! I like that there's a build up in sexual tension between the two even if Josh seems to have fallen for Tanner hard and fast. They both make a cute couple and I enjoyed reading about their interactions, sexual and...well, it's mostly sexual.

I'm not sure I would really think of Tanner as a "very straight" guy. Even with his hesitance to touch another man's penis, I still think he's more in denial than straight.

I thought that it was cruel of Tanner to lead on Josh in such a way when he was insistent that he was gay. I wanted to smack Josh upside the head for continually choosing the wrong man and again leaving his heart open to be stomped upon. Luckily, this isn't real life and they do get their happy ending.

The ending was a bit rushed though but I enjoyed the story. It's silly and a lot of fun.

This was a DNF for me. The first 20% was truly awful. Josh said at the beginning that he's always been a relationship type guy, not one for hookups. Then he sees Tanner and immediately starts sexually harassing him in a seriously over the top way. Josh talks about how this new job is sooo important to him, and how he worked sooo hard to get through the tests, ect and then on his first day he starts super inappropriate behavior with his MENTOR??? Wtf is even happening here? Not to mention it's really gross of Josh to try and get with someone who has clearly identified as straight and is clearly uncomfortable with being hit on so strongly. No means no.
This book was so ridiculous. And every woman in the book was made out to be some bimbo who was constantly hitting on one or the other of the MCs. *insert eye roll* Tanner's female coworker comes up and talks to him and Josh gets all sassy and territorial for a guy he literally just met? Who the f*ck are you, dude?
Don't waste your time with this one, folks. Trust me.
