Boy 7

A boy wakes up in a sweltering, bare field. He doesn’t know how he ended up there, where he was before or what his name is. After discovering a strange 7 on his leg he finds a backpack containing a mobile phone. Relieved he wants to enter the emergency number, but then sees that he has received a voice message. To his amazement he hears: Whatever happens, don’t call the police. And he knows one thing for sure this is his own voice. Then a pick-up truck comes driving up...

I wanted to read this book for a while. The synopsis really interested me and reminded me of one of my favorite books:The Maze Runner. What I also liked is that this is a standalone, I was really curious how Mirjam Mous was going to conclude this story in less than 300 pages. I don’t think this book has been produced in the English language but they should! There is a Dutch movie produced which I was also planning on seeing after reading this.
The book starts amazing, with all the questions. I can’t imagine someone would stop reading after reading the first page. But I don’t think this is that original. Like I mentioned before the blurb really reminded me of the maze runner; a boy waking up alone with no memory’s. But this book actually took a really different direction than I thought it would.
I don’t know what to think of when Sem finds this Notebook. I don’t particularly like this part while I was reading it, because it felt unrealistic. It’s way to detailed to be real notes about his past. I really felt that I was lagging behind events, and that disturbed me because I wanted to know what had happened and this notebook tells about classes and tests. But after I finished I realized this story needed this, I was just happy that it didn’t continue through the whole book.
When part three in the book started the real excitement started. I loved the fast action filled plot and I couldn’t stop reading. And I loved how Sem handles it.
This book is well structured and thought over. Everything was told at the right moment and the order made you want to continue reading because the tension is growing gradually. What I think is the strength of this book is that there are so many questions you want to get answered as fast as possible. Unfortunately that was also a loss. I wanted to know the questions so bad that I started skipping lines just to come closer to finding the answers, that was a shame because this actually is a well written book.
I have never read anything from Miriam Mous but maybe I will in the future. I liked her writing style. It was fast paced and there weren’t unnecessary chapters or details. It’s very quick and easy to real (For some people too easy). I think her books aren’t literature but they are perfect for young readers and relaxing rainy afternoons. I only got annoyed that she sometimes wanted to fit too much in one sentence. That made it sometimes a bit untidy, especially in the beginning. Another annoyance I had while reading was the English words woven into this Dutch language book. In the Dutch language we take over a lot of English words, especially new once. But we have words for “notebook” “boy” and “seven”?! I was annoyed while reading, I don’t understand that authors want to participate in this trend.
I didn’t bind and connect much with the main character. I don’t think that that is the goal of this stand alone. But I did miss that connection with characters. Sem was an ok narrator and I liked him as the main character but he was nothing special. I do like that he is realistic in the way he acts and thinks in the situation. He isn’t a character I would remember and neither where the other characters in this book. But I really think this story doesn't need this because of the crazy good plot. I really liked Louis though, he was just what this series needed. I liked his friendship with Sem and the way he dealt with the whole situation. I hated what they did to him. I hated Lara throughout the whole book, she does one nice thing butbut I found that to be really predictable.
The world building isn’t much special. It’s just our world like in 2016. The descriptions where ok but leave a lot to the imagination. The institute hasn’t much debt. I mean I wanted to know more than it was a grey building and there was a fence. Flatstaff, is the town the other part of the story plays in. I just know that there is a Pizza Hut, and a bowling Centre, I have no idea how the rest of the town looks. But just like with the characters I think this story doesn’t need it.
There are a lot of unanswered questions and illogical moves from the cooperation. Why didn’t they find out Sam was also in on the first escape when Louis got captured. Why give them a chip when they were there for a few weeks, when you install it you can track them immediately? Why let them run around the hallways, you can’t fool me that there weren’t camera’s or that the night watcher never saw them. I don’t fully understand CooperationX. Their actions looked like an amateur school camp. I think that this cooperation is so, so unrealistic. Mad scientists fine, but this whole institute with classes and stuff it sounded so… weird. Only 8 boys? Why let a girl of 15/16 do a lot of dirty work? Who are there leaders? I also think there motives are a little bit vague, ok they want money and to test this brain thing but it’s still a little vague what they want.
Enjoyable for an evening but this isn’t for people who are looking for literature.

WOW!
Wat een geweldig boek!
Ik wilde hem eerst niet lezen omdat het een Nederlandse schrijfster is, maar heb het toch een kans gegeven.
Ik moest namelijk 3 boeken voor school lezen en mijn vriendin heeft dit boek ook gelezen en zei dat ik het moest lezen.
Dus heb ik hem gepakt en ik ben er blij mee!
Ik heb hem geleend bij de bieb maar ik MOET hem ook zelf hebben hoor!
Geweldig boek! Zeker een aanrader!

Een jongen wordt wakker op een grasvlakte. Hoe hij heet en hoe hij hier is gekomen? Dat weet hij niet meer. Hij weet niets meer. Het enige wat hij heeft, is een rugtas. Hij vindt een mobiel en luistert naar een voicemailbericht. Het is zijn eigen stem die zegt dat hij in geen geval de politie moet bellen. De enige aanwijzing die hij kan vinden, is dat er op zijn kleren de naam Boy 7 staat. Boy besluit op zoek te gaan naar de waarheid en zijn geheugen, waarbij hij niemand kan vertrouwen. Wat voor duister geheim schuilt er achter zijn geheugenverlies?
Dit boek heb ik vele jaren geleden gelezen, maar ik was al veel te veel vergeten. In december komt de verfilming van Boy 7 in de bioscoop, dus toen ik dit boek voor maar 10 euro in de winkel zag liggen, besloot ik hem maar mee naar huis te nemen en hem te gaan herlezen. Net als Boy 7 had ik last van geheugenverlies en kon ik helemaal opnieuw beleven wat er gebeurde in dit spannende verhaal.
Vanaf de eerste bladzijde word je meteen in het verhaal gezogen. Aangezien je net als Boy 7 nog niets weet van de situatie, moet je samen met hem achter de waarheid komen. De hoofdpersoon kan bijna niemand vertrouwen en moet met wat enkele hints ervoor zorgen dat hij zijn geheugen terug kan krijgen. Lara is een meisje die hem helpt, maar hij heeft zelfs bij haar zijn bedenkingen. Stapje voor stapje komt Boy erachter hoe hij wakker werd op de grasvlakte en welke geheime en duistere praktijken hier achter zitten.
Mirjam Mous heeft een vlotte schrijfstijl, ze weet precies de juiste dingen te vertellen en ze houdt de spanning er goed in. Als lezer blijf je benieuwd naar het verhaal achter Boy 7. Er gebeurt veel in het verhaal en met behulp van flashbacks kom je precies te weten wat er gebeurde voordat Boy wakker werd op de grasvlakte. Het verhaal is goed opgebouwd en daardoor is het heel zeldzaam als je halverwege dit boek zou stoppen met lezen, dit boek moet je gewoon uitgelezen hebben!
De personages in het verhaal spraken je ook zeker aan. Aangezien Boy geheugenverlies heeft, is hij wantrouwig en vastberaden om zijn geheugen terug te krijgen. Hij is moedig en dit maakt hem een sympathiek personage. Ook de andere personages hadden hun eigen karakter waardoor je iedereen goed uit elkaar kon houden.
Boy 7 is een boek vol spanning, mysterie en moet je zeker een kans geven. Het is nog een redelijk dun boekje, dus je kan in redelijk korte tijd dit boek uitlezen. Als je eenmaal begint, houdt Boy 7 je in zijn greep en laat hij niet meer los!

Ik had echt zo veel meer van Boy 7 verwacht..Het verhaal is naar mijn gevoel niet helemaal uitgewerkt. Ik mis bepaalde details. Het voelt eerder als aan alsof het 1 van de eerste versies is.
Het idee en de grote verhaallijn zijn wel super interessant. Ik vind het jammer dat er niet meer beschrijvingen en details zijn over Cooperation x en Lara. Het is allemaal erg vaag, alsof er een dikke mistlaag over het verhaal hangt.

Ook dit boek heb ik weer heerlijk geluisterd via Nextory! Super spannend en mysterieus verhaal, en erg verslavend.

Ik heb dit boek samen met een buddy gelezen. Ik was er ooit al eerder in begonnen, maar kon me er niet verder toe zetten. Nu moest en zou ik het boek uitlezen en het ging makkelijker dan gedacht. Het verhaal zit goed in elkaar en het is makkelijk en snel te lezen. De benodigde spanning en nieuwsgierigheid naar de rest van het verhaal ontbreekt ook niet.
Het boek deed me wel een beetje aan De Cirkel denken vanwege de toekomstige snufjes. Al vind ik dit verhaal minder realistisch. Ik weet ook dat er een film van is, en daar ben ik nu wel nieuwsgierig naar.

Reread 2023: de brugklassers lezen dit boek voor hun rapport. Om ze beter te kunnen ondersteunen, heb ik het boek nogmaals gelezen. Ik vond het nu leuker dan de eerste keer!

Leider nur ein mäßig gutes Buch, welches ich nicht unbedingt weiterempfehlen würde. Der Klappentext war so vielversprechend, konnte meiner Erwartung jedoch nicht gerecht werden. Der Schreibstil ist sehr einfach und flüssig. Die vielen Zeitsprünge in der Story sind etwas verwirrend. Auch wenn der Protagonist ein Teenager ist, so ist mir dieser Charakter viel zu naiv gestaltet. Auch die ganzen Fähigkeiten eines Nebencharakters sind mir zu dick aufgetragen. Teils war die Handlung einfach nur unglaubwürdig. Die Geschichte war einfach nicht richtig rund. Es kam keine richtige Spannung auf und einige Aspekte waren total vorhersehbar. Das Ende war mir viel zu abrupt und unbefriedigend. Daher nur 2,5 Sterne.

eerste (en tot nu toe enige) boek dat ik gewoon zomaar, hatsa!, las. las het overigens in 1 dagje als ik het me goed herinner.
vond het vrij intrigerend en herinner me vaag genoeg erg goed wat er gebeurde. het heeft kennelijk een indruk op me achtergelaten, dus ik ben tevreden 👍

August 23, 2019Het was zo leuk om dit weer te lezen. Vroeger was ik lyrisch over dit boek, ik heb er ooit zelfs een boekbespreking over gehouden (zo lang is het dus geleden).
Hoewel ik het einde niet helemaal bevredigend vond snap ik wel waarom ik fan van het boek was.

The boy, who calls himself Boy7, after a word and a number that's stitched inside his clothes, goes on a journey to look for who he is and what had happened to him, with the help of a nice girl named Lara.
As he furthers his quest for knowlegdge about himself, he discovers some mind-boggling things, and some people who seemed to be friends at first might just turn out to be enemies.
It was awesome!
The main character was a lot of fun. What was so great of this book is that we don't have a whole character developing themself, but we get a character learning about who he was in the past, and we see how his current behaviour is influenced by that.
There aren't many side characters with lots of depth, but these aren't necesarry here. The story and main character alone are enough to keep the reader interested. Adding more pointless side character to this would've only made the book less interesting.
The pacing is done amazingly well. For a book that has so much happening in it, and also contains time skips, flashforwards, and flashbacks, it's done great. It is really fast, but just fast enough. I hate it when a book is too fast, but I hate it even more when it drags. Here, it's done pretty much perfectly. If it would've dragged, I don't think I would've liked this book as much as I do now.
I was also really engaged in this, like, really. To the point that I scratched behind my right ear multiple times (you'll get it if you read the book), feeling eerily.
If I could have a nitpick with the book it's that maybe a bit more development on the part of the antagonists would've been nice, since now we do get this, but maybe a teensy-weensy bit too little. But this is nitpicking, remember, it hardly bothers me.

Ein Junge wacht ohne Gedächtnis auf einer Wiese auf - damit beginnt die Geschichte.
Zuerst könnte man da eine eine weitere Dystopie denken, die ja momentan wie Pilze aus dem Boden schießen, ist es aber nicht. Es handelt sich hier um einen Jugendthriller, in dem es zwar um Experimente geht, der aber in der heutigen Zeit spielt.
Die Sprache ist simpel und schnell zu lesen. Unterstützt wird dies durch relativ kurze Kapitel. Das macht das Lesen sehr angenehm. Die Geschichte ist in sich abgeschlossen, man muss also nicht auf Folgebände warten.
Die Story ist super, allerdings habert es für meinen Geschmack etwas an der Umsetzung. Die Spannung an sich geht leider dadurch verloren, dass alles viel zu glatt geht. Sobald der Protagonist vor einem Problem steht, löst es sich mehr oder weniger auch schon wieder sofort auf. Dadurch wirkt die Geschichte mit der Zeit sehr konstruiert. Hier hätte ich mir mehr Wendungen gewünscht.
Außerdem fand ich es sehr schade, dass das eigentlich Interessante, der Gedächtnisverlust, relativ schnell aufgeklärt wird.
Positiv fand ich, dass der Protagonist Boy 7 zwar auf ein Mädchen trifft, hier aber keine Liebesgeschichte entsteht. Das wäre dann auch ein bisschen zu viel gewesen.
An sich ist es ein solider Jugendthriller, der bei der Zielgruppe bestimmt sehr gut ankommt. Für meinen Geschmack war er etwas zu dünn mit Luft nach oben. Deswegen nur drei Sterne.
