Eliza is in a full-blown panic. Her notebook has been stolen—the one that lists everything she wants but is afraid to go after. And the absolute worst person in the world has it: her ex-boyfriend, Cooper.
Like it’s not enough Cooper was lying to Eliza for their entire relationship, now he and his friends are blackmailing her. They’re giving her just one night to complete the most humiliating tasks on her list or they’ll post her secrets online—including the ones that aren’t just about her.
Eliza’s sure of only one thing: she isn’t going down without a fight. Cooper may have what’s left of her dignity, but she’s not the only one with something to hide …
A hilarious and sweet teen novel by Lauren Barnholdt, the author of Two-Way Street.
This was possibly one of the worst books I have ever read. I despised everything about it. The dumb-ass title. The dumb-ass cover. The dumb-ass characters. And especially the dumb-ass writing. I tend to cuss and rant when I hate a book, so if you are of delicate sensibilities or loved this book, I would advise against reading any further.
I hate the main character so freakin' much. Eliza (I forgot her name already, so I had to look it up) was on my characters-i-wanna-shoot shelf before I even finished the second chapter. Could she be anymore stupid? Seriously. She was whiny and had not a lick of common sense. And she had no balls. I laughed when she told Cooper he had no balls, when she was a puppet for the 318's. Have some pride, girl. Personally, I would tell them to go fuck themselves and let them post the notebook online. Who cares if everyone knows you are scared to sing karaoke? And she was all "the secrets didn't just concern me". So what if one of your best friends is getting booty-called, one of them is a tease, and you kissed your sister's ex-boyfriend? I hate them too, and you should have told them anyway.
I also hated all the other characters. Clarice (I think that's her name) and Marissa were horrible best friends. Not only were they as equally stupid as Eliza, they ditched her on various occasions for boys. And at the end Eliza was all like "true friends" and all that crap. I was like "Are we reading the same book here? Your friends are bitches. Dump them". Cooper was the only character that I didn't want to stab with a fork.
And the writing was completely horrible. I rolled my eyes so many times one of them fell out of its socket. It was written to seem like the thought process of Eliza. Eliza, being completely stupid, did not help. And every other word was "like" or "you know' or "omg". And when Eliza was excited about something EVERYTHING WAS PUT INTO CAPS. CAN YOU BE ANY MORE JUVENILE? I just hated it. Oh, so much.
The plot was also completely predictable and completely stupid. Everything you expect to happen, except the things that might be awesome (ninjas!), happens. And the title of the book is wrong. Not much was changed. Eliza still has the same fears, except now she is not as stupid as to write them in a notebook.
And Barnholdt must have been sponsored by Pandora or something, because she mentioned them at least five different times. Sheesh.
This book is not fun. It's not cute. It's not entertaining in the least. If I had a physical copy and not an ebook, this book would be used as lining for my brother's poopy rabbit cage. I would say to use it as toilet paper, but it's not good enough to wipe my ass.
My Thoughts: We are introduced to Eliza, Eliza's friends, Eliza's ex Cooper, Cooper's so called friends. I want to say that I liked Eliza. I even liked Cooper, even though he was supposedly a jerk. I didn't like Cooper's friends (well duh) and I thought Eliza's friends were annoying. First off, I want to point out that they left her throughout the book and if they were "real" friends they would have stuck by her through everything and not run off with the first guy they laid eyes upon.
Eliza's notebook has gone missing! She has written in there since she was young, all the things she's scared of. Really, this is nothing to be ashamed off. Singing karaoke, asking a hot guy to dance, all typical teenager fears. Eliza has also written a lot of things in the notebook about her friends/family secrets as well so she needs to get it back now! Cooper's friends call her and tell her she has a night of tasks to complete before they will give her the notebook back. How does Cooper fall into this? Well, to get into their little group, he had to a task. The task, that hurt Eliza a lot. She really is not supposed to care about the boy after what he has done to her.
The night goes on and we see all the things Eliza has to do, we experience them with her. Her fears, her accomplishments, her feelings.
Overall: This book was awesome. I love Lauren's books. I've read 3 of them now, and all of them were amazing. She can take such simple subjects and make them so incredible. I also like the guys in her books. I really liked Cooper and I didn't think he was all that bad and I'm so happy with what happened.
Cover: Love it. I know this book went through a few different cover changes but I think they made the right decision on this one. It would definitely make me pick up the book and buy it.

After reading Barnholdt's Two-way Street, I was excited to read One Night. It's about a girl who has her notebook stolen -- a notebook containing all of her "emotional fears" (her words, not mine). Some of these fears are admittedly shallow, but some, not so much. Her ex-boyfriend Cooper has done Something Horrible, which is part of the reason she's in this mess. She's blackmailed into acting out these fears, and shenanigans ensue.
In Two-way Street, Barnholdt had served up some pretty solid characters with a batch of tension and wit right alongside them. The dual stories were plausible, if a little over the top. I laughed out loud. A lot. These were pretty believable teens with believable problems in believable scenarios.
It was the sneak peek on Barnholdt's website that really drew me in to want to purchase One Night That Changes Everything. Kudos to her, but shame on me before waiting for someone else to review this book - anyone who didn't give it a 4-5 stars. In One Night, there were so many times I actually looked up from my phone (I purchased it via the Kindle app), eyes wide, thinking someone was playing some kind of weird joke on me. All that believability went right out the window in this novel.
I could go and pick through this book and tell you every little thing that grated my eyeballs, but I won't. I could delve into unlikeability with the protag, Eliza, but I won't. What I can say is, I was disappointed in the underdevelopment of everyone in this book. Yep. Every. Single. Character. There was a point where I kept getting Marissa and Clarice (Eliza's best friends) confused.
You know when you watch a movie scene (or the entire film, Grownups), and it's like, "I know there's some sort of story that's supposed to be going on here," and it never happens? And there are no transitioning between scenes? It's like someone just put a bunch of pictures in an editor and hit play to force the movie to progress. It was as if characters were given lines to talk at each other, and in order to have something to say and move the plot along.
The progression of this novel felt very canned, as if these scenes' sole purpose was to connect points A to B to C. The predictability of what unfolds is frustrating. The predictability of what Eliza thought and what she and her friends said was frustrating. I'm normally not one to throw around sentences like "that was SO unnecessary," but it was a knee jerk reaction every 10 minutes reading this book. And this was a short book. I'm not much of a page skipper, but I did so for the remaining 40% of the book.
The first 20% of the book held both of my feet in. After characters started doing the same things over and over, words became filler, and Character A/B/C/D/E kept looking at the ground, I felt like someone had taken a bat to both of my knees. I'm definitely going to give Aces Up a little breathing room before I devote a few hours to it, although I'm not pulling it from my TBR list. This Barnholdt read was simply not a keeper for me.
This is a story about Eliza who loses everything, but this time she lost something that could ruin her. Her notebook. The notebook that she's written in for years that contain some of her biggest fears amongst other things. Only she didn't lose it. It was stolen by her ex-boyfriend, Cooper. Now Eliza has to do a string of task that are listed in her book to get it back or it will be plastered on the internet. Not good.
One Night That Changed Everything is a really fun and cleaver story about what your really made of, friendship, trust, second chances and ultimately facing your fears, even if your blackmailed into it.
I adored Lauren Barnholdt's Two-Way Street and she is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite authors in YA chick-lit. She has an incredible spark in her writing that really pulls you in, while the plot and her characters always seems so easy to get lost in.
I loved Eliza, even though I wanted to shake her some (most) of the time when it came to Cooper, but I had to admire her I'm-not-going-to-let-these-jerks-get-the-best-of-me, attitude and wouldn't go down without a fight. Cooper was too cute and I liked how he stuck around to make sure Eliza was okay. I wasn't sure what kind of ending we were going to get. This one was a pretty messed up situation, but I thought the ending was well done.
Basically, I loved this book. It's enjoyable and it made me smile and that's what I look for in a good escape. Anyone looking for good solid fun, should get a kick out of this one.
One Night That Changes Everything could be called One Book That Does Everything Right. This little story about Eliza and her missing notebook is unique, fun, and full of surprises.
Eliza keeps a notebook that lists all the things she is afraid of doing, but plans to someday do. It’s sort of like a bucket list, but they are all things she is TERRIFIED of doing. Well, when her ex’s “friends” steal Eliza’s notebook, they make her do some of the things on her list. Can you even imagine!?! It’s like the dare part of Truth or Dare when your opponent knows all your fears. See, I told you it was unique.
The list has some funny things on it – like singing karaoke. That scene had me giggling. However, I felt sorry for Eliza just the same because she was so afraid to do them. The whole experience helps Eliza to get over her fears and to be comfortable in her own skin.
Are you wondering about this ex I mentioned? His name is Cooper and he’s a good guy despite what Eliza thinks about him for most of the book. I really liked that he was persistent and honest. This is where some of the surprises come in.
Lauren Barnholdt is very talented. I thought it was so cool that she could write a whole book about one night – that is really stretching the moment. She did all of that and there was not one single sentence that was boring. I loved every single bit of this book!
I dare you to read One Night That Changes Everything. Come on. I dare you.
Eliza has a secret notebook where she keeps a list of all the things she's afraid of doing. When she discovers its missing, she instantly goes into a panic trying to find it. She gets a phone call from her ex-boyfriend Cooper and that's when things get interesting. He has her notebook... and he and his friends wants her to perform multiple tasks from her list in order to get it back or they'll post its contents online.
The entire book takes place over the course of one night, which I enjoyed. I found Eliza to be very annoying and whiny and she instantly got on my nerves. Clarice and Marissa also got on my nerves, they were really terrible friends to Eliza, constantly ditching her for the various boys in their lives... but then at the end of the book Eliza went on to say how they were such "true friends"... it just made me annoyed. I didn't like the writing style much, it seemed like every other word was "like" or "omg", what the author, I assume, thinks teenagers speak like... I felt that every character in the story was underdeveloped and lacked any depth whatsoever. I also really hate Cooper and how he used Eliza... Eliza acts like she is so tough and doesn't need him, but then goes right back to him every time...
Overall, I found the book to be pretty stupid and I would definitely not want to give it to my preteen daughter due to the "lessons" it teaches its readers...
I really, truly, honestly - DESPISED the message of this book.
I really do like Barnholdt; she has a special talent for writing entertaining books... Somehow, her books never feel outdated. Her "lingo" or slang, or whatever pop culture references she incorporates are always spot on. She's so cool, and knows how to work readers into a comfort frenzy. Somehow, by the 2nd sentence - you know you're gonna be on the main character's side - rooting for her. She's your girl. You might even feel like YOU'RE the girl in the book.
This book could've been about cold, calculated revenge. Girl power. Telling the boy who broke your heart to kiss your ass..... Something empowering.
Only, it wasn't.
It was disguised as some kind of revenge/ empowerment YA book. A girl who gets played, plays the player! And then she never looks back. Maybe even meets her OTL as a bonus. But nooo. Somehow, her "revenge" plot is twisted into a warped cat-and-mouse chase with the Girl and the Player. Somehow, he ends up being the misunderstood Hero. She's the sassy Heroine who realizes he was "always" innocent, on her side, and never "meant" to take notes (and assign points) for how far he got with her - and then share them with his "frat" buddies.
Gross.
Not only that, there was a constant barrage of backstories for her "besties" - and little side stories that really didn't need to be there. I could've cared less. It added to my agitation; I just wanted the story to move along. The author tried to play it off as if Eliza "faced her fears" and got a bonus by realizing her Player really wasn't one but a misunderstood Hero. But in the end, I saw it as Eliza basically doing bitch work for the guys in the "frat."
They said (or actually, threatened): post a bikini picture of yourself on the internet, and she actually did it! There was much more that she did, but bikini pic really infuriated me....
She not only enlists the help of her Player ex to take photos of her in her bikini, she "likes" how she looks, and feels like she overcame some obstacle. Like, these guys inadvertently helped her overcome something. (WTF?)
And the story is spun so that she somehow reclaims her power over this Player ex bf, by doing stuff she's told to do... Uh....
I don't think so.
It would've been better if she did all of those things, made him really fall for her, and then dumped his ass. The whole story felt silly after how things ended. She didn't really have a back-bone, and some of the things on her list were plain STUPID. How she got herself into that mess in the first place really blew my mind......
Also, the drama with her sister was UNNECESSARY and UNFORGIVABLE (on her part).
Maybe I'm too old for this kinda stuff now. Too jaded. Too rooted in the real world. Whatever it is, I don't think I'll be reading any more Barnholdt for looooong time....
the Narretor was awoesome. I enjoyed every incedant happend. However, I hopped there would be more at the end of the story especially about the ending it was't enough for me But in general it is a fast reading book ^^
This is one of those books I thought would be way to young/cutesy for my tastes, but after finishing it it turns out I really did enjoy it. I am giving it 4 stars based on it's genre; so no it does not compare to some of my other 4 star books, but in it's own setting it kicked some tail!
Eliza has this notebook that she writes down all the things (pretty much socially) that she is too scared to do, she has kept this notebook for 5 years. It is missing. Connor, her ex-boyfriends little club, the 318's have it and if she wants it back she is going to have to do the tasks they dictate from her notebook. She agrees because she thinks the inforamtion in there is embarassing. So, basically we follow her around one night, bouncing from here to there, from friend to foe in all these "embarassing" situations. I have to say I was a little dissapointed in the dares, you'd think they would have picked worse that what she had to do, i.e. Kareoke, ask a boy to dance, tell her sister a horrible secret. Doesn't seem that like shattering, but I guess to each their own. Meanwhile we have a little love story going on-which is kind of cute. The Pacing of this book reminded me or "Nick and Norah's infinite playlist." All in all, this was a fun ride. It was super fast to read, like 2 hours. Sooo, I'd say give it a try if you like chick-lit.
Lauren Barnholdt has done it again. She has written a cute, fun, quick read that I adored. One Night That Changes Everything is the perfect book for chick lit lovers everywhere. It was so good I stayed up until 3 in the morning to finish it.
Eliza loses everything. Whenever she needs something, she can't find it. That's why she isn't too worried that she can't find her purple notebook. That is, until she gets a phone call from her ex, Cooper, saying that he has it and in order to get it back she has to do everything he tells her to. From that moment on, Eliza is forced to face her biggest fears and take on the tasks that she has written about in her notebook. With the help of her friends and even Cooper, she may have a chance to get it back. The only question is, what tasks are they going to pick for her from the list?
One Night That Changes Everything was pretty much just a fun story to read. There wasn't a whole lot of meaning to the book but in this case it was okay. I mean, Eliza did have to face some of her fears and then realize that they weren't actually so bad but that was only a minor part. The real thing was Eliza and Cooper's relationship and how it ended. I definitely saw similarities to Two-Way Street in the fact that the reason isn't given away until about halfway through the book. That was pretty much where the similarities ended though. One Night That Changes Everything was so much fun because of that. I never saw what was next and I had no clue how it would end.
Eliza was the best character in the book but Cooper was a close second. Eliza's friends, on the other hand, weren't that great. They were kind of flaky and they kept leaving her. She had to rely on Cooper most of the book because her friends had already left without her. I don't think that's a very good friendship. Eliza wasn't worried about that though. She was more worried about the tasks that she had to do. I didn't think they were so bad but then again, I have never been forced to do them. Cooper did help her through most of them and I really liked that about him. His friends were jerks and were the ones forcing Eliza to do all of it but he did help.
Overall, One Night That Changes Everything is a fantastically written, hilarious novel of facing your fears. I think every teenage girl has been in Eliza's place at some point so it's easy to relate. If you have any free reading time this summer I definitely recommend picking this one up!
Good god, that was an incredibly stupid book. I'm so glad to be done with it.
I had been so excited to read this book. I love books that take place in one night; watching everything unfold and lessons learned is a great feeling for me. But this... ugh.
This book feels like it was written by a twelve-year-old. I had a hard time believing Eliza was a junior half the time. And the author writes like you're an idiot. Like when they're talking about Kate. The age difference was already mentioned, and yet one of the characters says "Kate was a junior when we were freshmen." Even another character says "I know, I can do math." Or something like that. The point is, the whole book treats you like this, like it has to explain every simple thing for you.
Eliza's friends are too UGH for words. They're the shittiest friends, I swear. They're constantly ignoring or abandoning Eliza. And all of them whine too much. Jeez, grow up!
And for all of Eliza's bitching about Cooper standing up for himself, she never does so herself. She doesn't even learn anything by the end of the book; just decides she's not scared of anything anymore, even though she did NOTHING TO PROVE IT. Nothing evidenced she'd changed over the course of this night. In fact, Cooper handed pretty much everything to her.
Overall, this book was INCREDIBLY immature and a waste of my freakin' time; I'm so glad I'm a fast reader.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I've had this book for a while but I was reluctant to read it because one of my GR friends whose reviews I absolutely love thought it was crap. But the other night I felt like reading something light, saw my copy of this book and thought I'd give it a go.
One Night That Changes Everything is about Eliza who was set up for a series of potentially humiliating tasks by a group of mean guys from her school, a group which happens to include her ex-boyfriend Cooper who she may still have feelings for. If she refused to do any of the tasks, they were going to post the contents of her notebook online. And this would be bad since said notebook has a list of all the things she secretly wished she could say/do.
This is a book that can be described as mindless reading. It almost doesn't require your full attention. It's like watching one of those so-so girl-bonding movies complete with the requisite karaoke scene. I read the prequel novella "Before That Night" - which can be downloaded for free on the author's website - before I read this and it gave me an understanding of the dynamic between Eliza and Cooper when they were still together. Though I have to admit, I thought all of the characters were really shallow. Especially Eliza's friends who were always ditching her for guys and pretty much anything else that captured their attention. I mean, with friends like those, who needs enemies? And as much as I liked Cooper in the prequel, I thought he was a bit of a pushover in the novel.
A decent plot, but so much ore could've bee done with it the Protagonist- eliza was an idiot and whenever she made a mistake she'd blame it on cooper or she was just angry. Her friends ditched her for boys all night and cooper the only decent person was cooper. clarice didnt realise what she was, (a tease) only the other girl(i say other girl as i dont remember her name) actually made a discovery about her self- marissa thats it!
An ok (or less) book that was funny because of the idiocy i would say best for preteens except theres drugs, sex and swearing, however these girls i dont think even had the IQ(even if you added theres together) to effectively carry out these things for all there talk a tiny amount of action as there IQ dont even match my shoe size (Who drives at 80mph after its just rained) i was expecting a car crash . wow this book was....ehh
cooper was however hot tho, so was that guy who liked rap(bad boys *sigh*) the book ended as expected maybe a little more bruised. character however lacked depth i forget names and i read it early this morning late last night, A disappointing read for an author who wrote 2 way street.
All I can really say is WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED!! (i learnt the capitalization from the book cus im EXCITED!!!)
This was probably one of the most entertaining reads I have read all year. It was fun, imaginative, and basically the Holy Grail of YA chick-lit. (By the way, because I only knew about the book what I read on the inside flap, and I realized that the summary from Goodreads gives away pretty much the whole plot, I edited it a bit.)
So: THIS. WAS. AWESOME.
I haven't read a book that takes place during one night since Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and this one carries the torch.
The whole idea for this book is great, and like I've said, Lauren Barnholdt's plots are always good. Eliza is a very likeable and relatable character, and I think part of that is that everyone can substitute things they're afraid of doing with things Eliza is and live read vicariously through her.
The characters: I LOVED COOPER- even though I intensely wanted to hit him sometimes. Just sayin'. This book is worth it for the awesomeness that is Cooper alone.
I'm totally gushing, but I really do not have anything bad to say. Pacing was good, I was eagerly turning pages. I WANT TO REREAD THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN...
If I'm being 100% honest, I really wanted to like this book. I had really high hopes about the plot (it seemed intriguing) and I had heard great things about the author, but it was honestly really hard to not want to hit the main character over the head with some common sense.
The story begins with the main character, Eliza, having her top secret notebook full of her deep fears and desires, stolen by her ex-boyfriend and his friends who want revenge. Throughout the story, she's blackmailed by his friends who threaten to post the whole book online for the whole school to read her secrets.
I thought the story would be a fun read, but it just wasn't for me. I found that the main character had no common sense what so ever. While it was sooooo obvious that her ex boyfriend was there to help and actually liked her, Eliza kept whining about how he hated her and how he had played her and just wouldn't accept that he had changed. Not only was that annoying but the story seemed very, very cliche as well.
In terms of reading level it was a very quick read. I was able to finish the book quickly and the wording was easy. Everything about the book was simple and I didn't enjoy getting through the book. At all. I wouldn't recommend it for the reason that the main character didn't seem to be very relatable, she seemed hate-able for many reasons and characters seemed dry and not very in depth (very cliche like).
Reading has never been one of my favorite things, until I had One Night That Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt on my hands. It is filled with adventure, excitement, and drama, which makes it a perfect story!
One Night That Changes Everything is about Eliza. Eliza is a girl who never likes to get out of her comfort zone. She has lost something that no one can find out about. Her notebook. This notebook isn’t any ordinary notebook. It is very special and has things that usually no one writes down. As you continue reading, you will meet Cooper. Cooper is Eliza’s ex-boyfriend. After what he did to her, Eliza had planned to no speak to him ever again. Eliza is going to be forced to start being more confident. The climax of the story makes it impossible to put the book down because it is so intense you just want to keep reading! For example, when Eliza has do things she’s isn’t confident doing, you will feel desperation and anxious because of the way the author describes it. Overall, the story was exceptional! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an exciting novel.
This was a fun, fast paced read. It all happens in one night and moves along at quite a clip. What got Eliza into this situation was pretty sordid, but those things do happen at high school. Regardless I empathized with her as she had to face those fears and the fallout of putting her truth out there. I liked the storyline involving Eliza and her ex, Cooper, the most, and the ending was sweet and satisfying. Probably a bit too angsty for my taste, but still enjoyable.
(1.5)practically everything about this book vexing, aggravating, annoying, irking, and just downright stupid. the chracters, the writing, the POV. I will give the plot soooome credit buttttttt I must say, the plot wasn’t even really exhibited . Like , four dares? reallllyyy!? not to mention the fact that they were all lame and uneventful . The book wasn’t necessarily boring but I zoned out a little and didn’t care at all about anything I read whatsoever. I dunno what’s going on with Barnholdt because I loved her tween books, I mean all are 5-stars. Mayyyybe since her Two-way-street (which I’m totally NOT looking forward to now that I’ve been disappointed by two of her YA book) book was so popular she just started slacking on the rest of her books, thinking she’d make money on them just because people will buy them since they had a pleasant experience with a different book of barnholdts (basically me). In conclusion, it seems to me that Barnholdt thinks she can get away with writing hot trash filled with moral-less words and pointless everythings that should go live in a dumpster fire .
It’s missing. Eliza’s notebook is missing. Her notebook has been stolen by none other than her ex-boyfriend, Cooper and his friends. The notebook isn’t like any other notebook. This notebook lists different things Eliza wants but is too intimidated to go after. Cooper and his friends have given Eliza just one night to complete the most humiliating tasks in her notebook. If Eliza refuses to complete any one of the tasks her notebook will be posted online for everyone to see. Eliza is not sure of much, but she is sure that she won’t go down without a fight. One Night that Changes Everything by Lauren Barnholdt is a very intriguing book. What I really enjoyed about the book was the fact that I never wanted to put it down. The book kept me on the edge of my seat at all times because I never knew what would happen next. I also enjoyed the fact that I connected with the characters throughout the book. I felt like I knew the characters on a personal level. One Night that Changes Everything is a must read because it will keep you reading until the very last page.
This is a book I read in eighth grade and I loved it; now after re-reading the entire thing in an hour, it's not me anymore. But it reminds me of a different me, a younger me, one who thought she knew a lot, but boy she couldn't have been more clueless. Nostalgia tastes interesting folks, and its sweetness is probably what made me give it a 3/5. Cheers to a younger time.
this book should banned. what message can a book like that send to young girls? let high-school boy-jerks bitch you around, pulling your strings like a damn puppet? and for what? some pathetic unimportant stuff you wrote in a notebook? pff. or maybe author aimed fot this story to seem adventurous? well, she obviously failed.
I didn’t enjoy this book. I felt Rebecca was grossly unfair to Ben so much so I hoped he would wake up and decide to move on from her. By the end, I didn’t even care. Be together. Don’t be together. Just move on.
Finally got this done wanted to see how it ended and Eliza got everything she wanted and her notebook well…I can’t say if she got it back and what she finally did with it etc, but very sweet and cute friendship
