This is a Silhouette/Harlequin from 2001, part of the Montana Mavericks multi-author series of Cowboy Historicals. The setup is great: Jane arrives in town penniless, thinking she has a job at a ranch (which was given to someone else), and meets John, the half-Cheyenne ranch foreman, who has bills to pay, people to care for, and no time for a prissy and proper city woman whose knowledge of the west is limited to novels.

Jane is a fish out of water, and John is an outsider too, as demonstrated by the racism he endures in an opening scene and throughout the story. Both characters are wounded and not fully healed. So naturally they are attracted, despite themselves. Helping things along are a series of disastrous "dates," arranged by a well-meaning couple to try and find Jane a husband. Complications include secrets about her past, and challenges of frontier living. The heat level is a touch higher than I was expecting, with a couple of great scenes of sexual tension.

Secondary characters are three-dimensional, likely because they are leads in other stories in the series. The story is well-written, longer and more complex than standard Harlequins, and the rich texture reflects Hales' broad scope as a romance writer - her more than three dozen books include inspirational, paranormal, and Regency titles. Overall, a solid romance read with realistic dark notes and good character growth.

Feels weird to subtweet other reviews but, uh, the heroine was severely abused by her ex-fiancé to the point where she was hospitalized and the sight of her bruised face makes people flinch so yeah, I think she can be forgiven for being uncomfortable around the strange men her employer tries to set her up with

Great story! It’s an old fashioned western with cowboys, Indians, town-folks and ranchers. There’s drought, rain storm problems and half-breed issues. I loved it as it’s the type of book you can see The End and know a good feeling. Thanks to the author for writing such a wonderful story.

I'm being generous by giving this book 3 stars. I lost interest a couple of times while reading it. The first half was very slow and boring because nothing happened, and I kind of got tired of Jane's character. Luckily, it got better later on, and I was able to finish it.

Yes, it's a love story, but there are a few twists and turns. John Whitefeather is a half-breed, and Jane Harris arrives in "Whitehorn" Montana in 1897. She is really young, suffering from a severe beating from "Emery" in Boston, and has stolen & pawned a piece of jewelry to get to Whitehorn, for an ostensible governess position, which is unfortunately no longer available. But she is Determined to become Indispensable, and never to leave Whitehorn.

Liberally peppered with interesting Cheyenne words and lore, Ms. Hale puts conjoined expressions in her character's mouths every few pages; the baby can "spit farther than a rattlesnake" when he encounters an objectionable food, "easier to read than a mustang rolling his eyes." "Your doubts are like howling coyotes . . .throw a piece of meat to quiet them. Once they are silent, listen for the whisper of your heart and follow it."

Sure, Jane ends up with John. But not as boring as some love stories.

Another 11 year old Harlequin resurrected as an ebook.
Heroine is a total ninny.
She cringes, flinches, screams, when any man comes near her- a quarter of the way through, I wanted to slap her.
What in the world would a Cheyenne warrior want with her?!
