Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.
Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.
Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.
This is another fun mystery in the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series. We've been slowly working our way through the series and we like the characters.
The mysteries are not scary and they aren't too difficult to solve; they often have a twist or two in the plot to keep us guessing, so I am actually somewhat impressed with the writing (especially for a short chapter book for young readers.) The illustrations are entertaining and complement the story nicely.
This story focuses on missing kittens from an Animal Shelter. The mystery itself is not overly complicated, but entertaining nonetheless. And since we just recently adopted kittens, our girls were enthralled with the story. They were only disappointed that the illustrations didn't have more kitten scenes. We enjoyed reading this story together.
I was intrigued by the title, since I love cats. I also had not seen the early chapter book stories of Nancy Drew. Nancy and her crew of friends solve every day mysteries as they come across them and also some not so every day mysteries, such as the missing kittens and missing laundry. Very enjoyable version!
3.5 stars. This was cute, but the motivation behind it seemed a little bit of a stretch. The book is about kittens that keep going missing. Bess has a cat allergy, so she stays behind and works on a truck with a friend and Hannah.
A cute cat mystery and I do love cats. The motive is rather weak but no weaker than the motive for murder or your average crime show. The town doctor did it to protect the image of the town's leading family sort of thing.
As a child, I always read Nancy Drew. I enjoyed mysteries so much! I thought this popular series would be a good one to revisit, and in a new way. This series is Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew. It is a little more kid friendly and geared towards younger students in elementary school. The characters are younger and the mysteries are not as scary. These books in this series are written so that children feel that they are very much involved in solving the mystery. There are clues throughout the story which really helps to keep the readers attention I think. The topic is about animals which is a topic that is very popular with young children. I used to love to read about animals as a child, that was my favorite topic! The Cat Burglar Caper pulls at emotions as well because the story deals with adopting kittens and feeling at home. I especially think this book would appeal to children with pets or who are wanting a pet because they can really get attached and involved with the mystery. I do think Nancy Drew appeals more to girls than boys because the main character is a girl, however, there are plenty of boy characters and I think boys would enjoy reading this series because it is not too heavily favoring a girl's point of view. I am glad to see that Nancy Drew is still a popular series among young readers.
Read this over several nights at bedtime with Drew.
Set in modern day, Nancy Drew is 8 years old in this series and is a budding detective. She has her 2 friends, cousins George and Bess, as part of her Clue Crew.
In this outing, the girls investigate missing kittens from the local animal shelter.
This book is mistery. Nancy and her crew had missing cats and they had to find the burgler. They just found 3 cats and they havent seen the burglar any where. At the end Nancy and the crew found al the cats and found the burglar. I would recommend this book to Elizabeth.
