Joseph Needham was a British biochemist, historian and sinologist known for his scientific research and writing on the history of Chinese science and technology. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1941, and a fellow of the British Academy in 1971. In 1992, Queen Elizabeth II conferred on him the Companionship of Honour, and the Royal Society noted he was the only living person to hold these three titles.
It's really rare to find Science and Civilization in China as a single volume. It's probably best to look for the individual sections and buy the lot. Although, after volume 3, each volume tends to be split into several parts. So, it's going to be a huge pain.
Needham was the best kind of explorer, following his curiosity wherever it led through another cultural world. As he traveled through China's cultural universe, he was asking what's to admire, what's to love, what's to learn from? He conceived both a passion for China and love for a Chinese woman, abandoned his previous career, learned the language, and spent decades churning out volume after volume to document China's contributions to the world. His appreciation for others opened doors between civilizations and paved a path toward mutual benefit. I think his attitude is basically the key to the future.
