Will Ambrose knows everything about love — except how to find it himself. He hosts a popular GLBT relationship radio show, but his own affairs have been rocky and abusive. With sexy, seductive tattoo artist Cobalt, it's lust at first sight. Unfortunately he's already involved ... until that night, when his late arrival home sends his cop partner into a jealous, violent rage.

Cobalt is a Fae, banished to live among humans. His studio, The Grotto, is both a hot spot for the NYC body art crowd and a haven for other Fae seeking protection. Though he's given up on relationships, since his human lovers tend to go insane when they discover his true nature, he can't help his lustful reaction to Will when the radio host visits The Grotto. He tries to dismiss it, but is compelled to get involved when a cab deposits a battered, broken Will at his door, with Cobalt's name on his lips.

Can their powerful attraction — and phenomenal sex — overcome an abusive closeted cop, a traitorous Fae who tries to divide them, and an ex-lover with inhuman powers who'll stop at nothing to take Cobalt back ... including going through Will?

OK, I think I may have read a different book than everyone else…

This book did not work for me at all. I know most people really liked and/or loved this book. To me, this book, well… sucked.

I’m all for reading PNR. I can easily suspend disbelief. Just magic your problems away and it will be all better. Everything can be solved by a little magic. I can totally get into that. What I can’t get into or suspend disbelief on is stuff that can happen in real life.

Here comes the rant…

The whole plot seemed contrived. Things weren’t explained very well and I was left wondering why quite often. The story seemed to go nowhere for most of the book and then near the end it became one big soap opera. A Spanish soap opera. I could almost hear the cheesy organ music and in my mind’s eye I could see the sudden zeroing in on the stunned/scared/angry face of whoever’s POV I was reading from at the time. And there was one time in particular that I did the whole “Luke, I am your father” in my head. Does that tell you how much of a cheese-fest this was? Oh, and the villain was a classic mustache twirler. He even spouted out "Blasted human!" once! I was waiting for him to go "Muwahahaha" but he never did. Shame, 'cause that would have at least been funny.

OK, I’m tired of writing this review. I thought I would have more rant in me but I’m finding that I just don’t care all that much. So, yeah. This one’s going on my “oh hell no” shelf.

Will Ambrose is a popular GLBT radio talk-show host who spews advice about relationships. He feels like a fake, though, because his own love life is a revolving door of abusive losers. Cobalt is a sexy, seductive tattoo artist and owner of the Grotto, an uber-hip NYC tattoo/piercing/scarification shop. The sparks fly when Will and Cobalt meet but neither is in a position to pursue: Will because his boyfriend is a sadistic and abusive cop; Cobalt because he is a Fae and humans who fall in love with him go insane. Circumstances arise, however, that place the two squarely in each others path and despite their setbacks, Will and Cobalt completely fall for each other. But they'll have to battle more than they ever imagined to gain their HEA.

The positives: the premise was interesting and the plot had potential. But this book did not deliver the goods. *sigh* I wanted to like this book. I tried, tried, TRIED to like this book. But in the end, I really disliked this book. Why? The characters.

***CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS***

First, I didn't connect with either Will or Cobalt or any of the supporting characters either. Will was TSTL in a can-he-really-be-that-dumb, oh-sadly-yes-he-can kind of way. His penchant for getting into trouble and believing the absolute WORSE thing to believe in every freakin' situation (read: Lyle loves me/is telling me the truth/won't hurt me again; or, Cobalt is evil) grated on my very last nerve. Cobalt was intriguing but fell short for me because he was a crappy fae. He's supposed to be this super artist with super-fae powers, right? Wrong. He's a wuss. Sure he could heal (cool) and glamor (alright). And, when the chips were down, he was able to throw down some bad-ass magic (impressive). But query: why didn't he ever use any of his power to help/save/find Will? (Nope, let's bust out some bacitracin, lidocaine, and band-aids! WTF!?!) Or help/save/find Skelly for that matter, since - although long-time enemies - they were united against a common foe. Speaking of Skelly, what was up with him? The love-hate thing he and Cobalt had was confusing and ineffective. Lastly, Will's BFF, Tess, was irritating. Her solution to any of Will's problems were (in order of preference): 1) let's go out and get drunk; 2) let's go out and get drunk again; or 3) let's shoot someone with this gun that I have. Ugh.

Bottom line: Not for me.

This was the only book I could find that S.W. wrote but after having read this one I wish there were more. Cobalt looked to be like one hot dude and Will was gorgeous. They truly complimented each other in this story in so many ways. One thought himself cursed and the other the constant victim with strengths that bonded them together as two broken halves and became a whole.

This story had the feelings, the action and I couldn't once find a boring moment that would entice me to put the book aside and contemplate picking up another but rather it had me keep going to the final end because I needed to know how it ended and I wouldn't have been satisfied otherwise.

A remarkably good book.

If I had a "WTF?!" shelf (as I've heard mention of lately by some of the folk on my Friends list), then this book would definitely be on it.

The basic premise of the story was certainly intriguing enough to catch my interest: Will Ambrose, a popular gay radio host, runs from an abusive relationship with a closeted cop...straight into the arms of Cobalt, a banished Fae making his living in the human world as a much-sought-after tattoo artist.

Sounds good, right? If only.

Well, in order to proceed, one must suspend all disbelief. To put things plainly, I pretty much felt as if all the action and all the characters' decisions were completely unbelievable. Warning: Rant ahead with lots of spoilers...

Bottom Line: Technically speaking, not bad, and definitely some good ideas. However, WAY too many WTF/TSTL moments, underdeveloped plotlines, and lots of loose ends. Simply not my cup of tea.

Infamous tattoo artist meets famed radio talk show host.

The story has an intensity driven by violence and a sense of impending doom for both protagonists. This is especially so due to the cruelty both are subjected to and done onto secondary characters.

Will is a gentle soul who seems to keep finding bad nuts to get involved with. His predisposition to find a partner who will dominate manifests into relationships with individuals who abuse—he hasn’t quite gotten it right. And the scenes with Lyle are graphic and rather difficult to read because not only is Will unequivocally abused, but his confusion as to what is happening and what he wants is heartbreaking.
His love life was one long fucking train wreck, and the tracks never ended.

Cobalt is in exile. Having been banished from the Fae realm he works and plays in the mortal one. His precious relationships have all ended horribly and he is no longer interested in committing. Tempted by Will he takes an irrevocable step. And finally...
"I wanted it just as much—and the sounds you make are thanks enough."

This is the beginning of a series and the secondary characters are extremely interesting. While the conflict surrounding Will and Cobalt is resolved there are series’ arc conflicts that are set up as well as some interesting stories to explore. I enjoyed the world building and the characters. This story might be a heavy on violence for some, but the interactions between the protagonists are loving.

So, I had issues with this. Even ignoring the whole "Fae" thing, it was just too implausible. And even though it was supposedly over 200 pages and my Kindle says it is over 6000 Kindle places, it seemed damned short. It took me no time at all to read it. There wasn't much development of anything at all and the whole book took place over like 4 days.

So, here's my (basically chronological) thoughts:

So yeah, if you're totally willing to suspend any and all disbelief, you might enjoy this more than I did. I just couldn't get over all the little things that we're wrong with it, and I thought the book moved way too fast for me to care about Will and Cobalt's relationship.

There are times I'm not sure I read the same book other people did. This is one of those times. From reviews and blurb I did expect something different: gritty, poignant, with some difficult moments.

What I found is the fake-LTGB version of an Harlequin romance (the ones with the unbelievable stories about princes, millionaires and the like).

Let me start with the plot. Yes, Will is beaten and raped. Twice. Is it difficult to read? No. There are no real, detailed descriptions of it. We are told mostly. Some of it (the rape) is off screen. Does it make it any better (or worse)? Again no. Because this is a clear case of telling rather than showing. Nor the characters nor the readers do really feel the brutality.
Will doesn't suffer for it. He has no problem in going on living or having sex. He just avoids going to work for a week. (Less problems than a flu.) There's no added burden of being male (in this society) and being raped. The brutality, like the paranormal, is just a label, a layer. It's not real.

Love story. Er. Sorry, what love story? The two see each other and for no apparent reason start an affair (after the rape no less).

I did really wish authors would let the controversial stuff out of their books, if they are not able to be real about it.
Was it a bad book? No. It wasn't awful. I didn't dislike or hate it. But sure I'm sorry I bought it.

See Ravyn for more reasons why Skin Deep is just as the title say. Just skin deep.

I love this story. It was gritty and dark with the Fae swirled in. This is a great m/m tale. Will Ambrose is a radio relationship advice personality who is in an abusive relationship. Cobalt is a tattoo artist with a fae secret. Both men have their issues and help each other get over them. the abuse was raw and I would have loved to flay Lyle but necessary to get Will's mindset across. There was a mystery as to why Cobalt/Ciaran was banished and why the villain, Eoghann, is so obsessed with him.

These questions get answered, two men who know a lot of pain fall in love and made me a fan. Great story!!

This one took me a while to get into. It is definitely not a bad story, I just think it wasn't what I wanted to read so I wasn't as excited to get going on it.

Turns out that once I got going, I really enjoyed the story. It was dark and edgy but you also get that love and protecting feeling too. We didn't really get a whole lot of info on the Fae 'world', so that wasn't an issue with overpowering the story. Which I think made it better for me, since I'm not to much into 'fantasy' type books.

I do have to say that Cobalt was one SEXY Fae...MMM, MMM!

I really enjoyed this urban fantasy novel with an interesting premise and good characters. The setting is contemporary with fantasy elements in that Fae creatures are living amongst humans. The writing is good with fewer errors than usually found from Loose Id of late, which is an unexpected benefit to the story. The plot moves incredibly fast and the chemistry between the two men is very hot. This is an author I haven’t read before but hope to read something from them again.

Radio talk show host Will Ambrose has lousy luck with men. His track record with men involves a lot of violence and his current closeted cop boyfriend escalates this even further after one horrible night. Needing help, Will ends up at the doorstep of a local tattoo artist, Cobalt. From that moment Will is embroiled in a Fae dispute while trying to extricate himself from the mess of his relationship.

The plot is incredibly fast paced and actually leaves several holes at the end, which I didn’t notice until I thought about it. The characters are decent and slightly different from classical roles. Will plays an almost helpless guy who keeps attracting men who hurt him. Although Will is not entirely helpless and he eventually stands up for himself, he does go through a majority of the book getting into difficult situations. Will is saved from this horrible stereotype by a good sense of humor and an actual brain, which he uses to help him and finally make some smart choices. Cobalt as the sexy tattoo artist and exiled Fae is incredibly hot, yet caring and his treatment of Will is sweet and affectionate. Both men are well developed into interesting, three dimensional characters.

Likewise the supporting cast from Will’s best friend to the various Fae characters is all interesting with enough to differentiate them. The cast could easily overwhelm the reader and blend together, but the story does a very good job at showing the depth of each involved in the story and their role. Similarly the plot balances the Fae problems with Will and Cobalt’s growing relationship and blends together with an interesting setting. The tattoo shop, The Grotto, is a great atmosphere and the detail afforded the store is fascinating. I really hope the author revisits this couple and the tattoo shop in the future, as there are numerous possibilities as well as loose ends to be tied up.

There are a few elements that don’t work, such as the ridiculous Starbucks scene and eventual resolution of Will’s relationship. These are unfortunate as I could see what the story was trying to accomplish and parts of the scene and resolution are understandable and reasonable. Yet the culmination felt too easy and a quick way out of a problem. However for this problem, the story well kept my interest and the various elements were fun to read and entertaining. The sex scenes are not gratuitous and actually occur later in the novel, but due to the quick pace and fast read this is unlikely to be a problem.

Overall this is a story I’d read again, even with the problems, as the setting is one of my favorites and the tattoo shop elements were a great and interesting addition. The characters are well developed with good tension and chemistry. For urban fantasy fans, this story should easily entertain and be worth reading.

** My disclaimer. I read this book for a reading challenge. **

"Hey there, welcome to The Truth. How can I fix your b$*&?"

So, I don't like erotica. At all. I don't like M/M, F/M, F/F, any erotica. But, I'm going to put that aside and try to review this book from a story standpoint and ignore all the erotica.

I still found the story lacking. There was little plot. No, there was interesting information but nothing to pull it together. So many themes are left unexplained - I guess because it's a series and it's supposed to make me want to read more?

And the abuse was horrific. It was completely awful to read. I was equally appalled that in the room where Will was attacked, days after and while he's still healing and bleeding, he is open to having another sexual encounter. I found it deeply saddening - I think it's unrealistic for someone who suffered so much abuse. Will needs to work on himself - why is he seeking these completely awful relationships - before he jumps into another relationship...... I found the tie of abuse to BDSM disturbing as well. I don't think anyone in that community would want to tie what they do to the horrid things that happened to Will. All in all, I thought it was a bad example of what I assume is a very respectful genre. Just not my kind of book.

I loved this book. It was a big dark and violent and therefore not for everyone. The abuse scenes were brutal although the sex scenes were mild. (Actually, I think there may have only been one, the rest implied.)

The characters were interesting and I appreciated how Vaughn didn't think I was ignorant and assumed I had some understanding of the Fae. His was a unique take on them but it was well done. I loved the complexity of Uriskel in particular. He was so interesting and difficult to figure out. I really liked how Will's thought process was portrayed, although his celebrity as a popular radio show host with the self-assurance needed for such a job was a little hard for me to reconcile with how he was in his own life.

There were several twists and surprises that really made the book for me. I loved the juxtaposition of Will's situation compared with Uriskel's and Cobalt's handling of both.

The only thing I really didn't like was Cobalt's name, but that is obviously extremely minor.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because I just love that "taking care of my severely injured true love" crap.

I have to admit that the beginning was a bit slow to draw me in but once it caught my attention I was sucked in and ended up loving it.

I loved the fact that while Will was in an abusive relationship he ended it when it got to the point of causing serious damage. He's a strong human since he can live past his abusive relationships and not become jaded or broken to the point of afraid of touch. Cobalt was just soo sexy to me. He's loving and caring and has only good intentions at heart for Will. They fit each other well.

The plot was suspenseful and interesting to me. What the fae look like outside their human-skins was detailed and appealed to the side of me that's a fantasy buff. The conflict with Cobalt's past, his enemies, and the overall fallout kept me riveted.

I'm looking forward to the next book and I'm hoping we'll get more information about that caller at the end because my interest was definitely peeked and whether or not it was related to someone Cobalt talk to during the book. Definitely recommended.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked Will and Cobalt a lot. Although I do feel like I don't really know Cobalt. Will was a great character to root for - still down to earth, trying to break the cycle and willing to take a chance when he hasn't always had moonbeams and pennywhistle's. This story reminded me of Spike's quote from Buffy:

"You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love till it kills you both. You'll fight, you'll shag and you'll hate each other till it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains children, it's blood. Blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's biatch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." -Spike(BtVS, season 3) Episode: Lovers Walk

And I'm not sure why really other than to say Uriskel's story is one I cannot wait to read. Somehow he reminds me of Spike completely. Not a direct corollary - but something about that love which transcends and changes a person -- even though they might be having a reason for their outward actions. Loved this one on to the next!

I expected a lot more out of this book if I'm being completely honest. I thought the story and characters had a lot of potential but I spent most of the time waiting to get really sucked into the book. I wanted Cobalt to actually do more, do something to help Will, rather than just sympathize with him and bathe his wounds. Will also seemed like two different people and the whole radio persona didn't really fit in with his personality, it all seemed a bit cheesy. I'll read the rest of the series, hoping things improve. I may just have read this one at the wrong time.

This story totally pulled me in! I really wanted to learn more about the Fey world.
The domestic violence was difficult to read about and i wondered why Will was repeatedly in unhealthy relationships!
Cobalt was sweet, but I didn't feel like I got to know him as well as I would have liked to!
Maybe some of my questions will be answered in the next book.

An intriguing balance of human and fae worlds - all based in New York. The book doesn't feel very paranormal because the fae powers are not really the focus. Relationships are the key drivers of this plot line and I can see there is plenty of scope for the development of the series. I really enjoyed this first book, so I'm sure I'll continue...

Fae/human, hea, m/m
Tw: abusive relationship, rape, cops

This is a more romantic version of the fae. I was a bit surprised by the lengthy descriptions of abuse from Will's lovers but that is sadly the way it is sometimes. Gosh it was hard to read. I felt so sick for him. Which I suppose is a great skill on the author's part.

Aside from having a very hot cover, Skin Deep is also a very good novel. It’s the story of Will Ambrose and Cobalt, two men who have more in common than simple an odd name.

Will is a DJ for a night show on the radio. He is gay and out but that is not a free ticket for happiness; Will tends to attract people with violence issue, boyfriends who end to hurt Will and not only in a figurative way. And now Will is even more in danger since his boyfriend Lyle, not only is violent, he is also a cop, and so Will is scared to go for help. But one night Lyle goes way over a push and a bruise, and it’s the time that will realize that his life is in danger.

Cobalt is a hot tattoo artist with a successful parlour in Manhattan. His place is like a haven for people, and more than ordinary crow can understand. Cobalt is a banished fae, and he built a shield around his parlour to avoid unwelcomed guests. It was thought for protect otherworldly creatures, but it’s useful also to Will, he really needs a safe haven. And Cobalt is ready to give it to him, only that he fears that Will is not strong enough to also accept more from him. The previous three love relationship Cobalt had, all ended badly when his lovers discovered Cobalt’s true nature: they were not able to accept him, and refusing him, they refused also reality and lost their minds. Cobalt believes to be cursed and for sure he is not willing to start a relationship with a very fragile man like Will.

I like the intake of the author in the issue: there is no paranormal explanation, as Cobalt believes, he is not cursed at all. Like Will attracts bad boyfriends for him, since he is a fragile man bad boyfriends think they can treat like an object, Cobalt attracts fragile men; a fragile man sees in Cobalt a safe haven and they really need it. But there is fragility and fragility, and Cobalt doesn’t understand that Will is stronger than expected, and with a good man by his side he is able to face everything.

There is a good love story here, but there is also a good portion of violence; fortunately, the reader doesn’t witness it, but he has second-hand report. There is also rape, and again, you don’t read it, but you know it happened. So be aware, it’s not an easy story, but I like all the complex development. I think the author is planning more stories in the same setting, and so she spent quite a time in preparing possible scenario: there are too many supporting characters that have a strong personality to be confined only in this story, Nix and Malik, for example, but also Skelly and even Jared, Will’s neighbour who does only a little cameo, but who left me a strong impression.

I struggle a bit to decide the rating. This book has good parts and not-so-good ones as well.

Okay, the good ones --
I do enjoy the setting. I mean, I can feel the intriguing tattoo shop (The Grotto) and the world of on-air radio setting. There's something mystifying about the night atmosphere. Despite some "holes" on the story that I will explain later, the plot is pretty fast paced. I also like few of the characters here very much -- especially the snarky Uriskel. Domestic abuse is not one common theme that I come across; so I do welcome it even if I must say that the abusive scenes are not for the faint-hearted.

Now come the not-so-good ones:
the urban fantasy elements are not well-informed. I mean, I struggle to understand the background history of Cobalt, Uriskel, and what have been going on in the Fae world. I don't like to feel like I'm being "shoved" into an established fantasy world without any clue or information about it. Then, of course, the third part of the story which makes me feel like the author takes a short cut of all the problems that are introduced in the beginning. It's pretty unbalanced, some potential plots are not well-developed.

But, well, I think I'll settle with the 3 stars because despite all the niggles, I finish this story pretty quick. Also, there is tenderness in Will and Cobalt's relationship that always softens my heart...

3.5 stars.

I wanted to like this book more, but I'm a bit disappointed by the way it ends.

What I liked:

* Will, the human protagonist. I really cared and ached for him. The story of his abuse by his partners made me hurt so much, especially because Will is a caring, witty and lovely man. He also seems pretty honest to himself. There is a point in the middle of the book where he compares being hurt physically and being hurt emotionally and I really had to stop reading for a while, the emotion was so deep it seemed impossible for me to recover.
I liked the slices we get of his job as a radio host. I would have liked to see something more, the phone callings he got were interesting.

What I didn't like:

* Will and Cobalt had each their set of problems. While Cobalt's resolution was completely satisfying, Will's resolution was perplexing to say the least, both regarding what leads to it and what the real consequences are. It sounded improbable.

* In comparison to Will, Cobalt's character is more superficial, one-dimensional. On the other hand I felt that one of the secondary characters, Uriskel, with his bad reputation and dangerous mission, was far more interesting and I think I would appreciate him even more when I'll re-read the book. It's one of those characters that strips themselves page after page until you get to the core.

I wish the half star would show!

My mini review doesn't say too much (I hope lol).

I was first drawn to this book by the cover and title. Then I read the blurb and was more curious so I thought I'd take a chance.

I'm not going to say too much as to not give away the plot, but I will say that this book involves fae/fairies, Seelie/Unseelie court, tattoos, piercings and mention of scarification. I have an idea of what scarification is, so I didn't Google it because I fear I might see something that wouldn't want to. There is also a couple of heavy physical abuse scenes that are pretty graphic and gruesome. That didn't put me off the story however.

I liked both Will Abrose, the radio talk show host, and Cobalt, the sexy tattooed and pierced skin artist. Their coming together is of course complicated. They both think the other is beautiful. And they both think that that they cannot have each other.

This story was intense and totally unexpected but very enjoyable.

Meh, this book was ok. I started out enjoying it quite a lot, the story was interesting sort of like a movie, there for entertainment not realism (especially with the abuse and healing). And I was fine with that. The magical world was very interesting and the story of Cobalt was cool, kept me wondering how it would end.

However the drama between Will and Cobalt felt really overdone, there were multiple betrayals, lies, insecurities and makeups within the span of 4 days... of knowing each other... this whole book was spanned over one week.

Not much sex either :-( which would have been fine for a realistic healing story, but this was was obviously unrealistic as they did have sex 3 days after Will was raped, so....

Anyway so I guess the downfall to this story was the relationship between Will and Cobalt. The side story and side characters were wonderful.

I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit! Was a February challenge/fantasy read for the LGBTQ Fantasy group, and a new choice for me. Wouldn't have found this author on my own, but very glad I was challenged to read it!

I was especially fascinated with the world building/tie-in to our contemporary world with the radio celebrity, and the treatment of an abusive history as well as the story behind the MC's individual 'curses'.

Anytime there are beautiful men with tattoos, I'm pulled in, and having an M/M story with Fae included was a new twist for me. I even ended up liking the not so likable secondary characters (grins).

Would recommend to anyone liking a bit o' fantasy in their M/M romance.

While there was much that I liked about this book, principally Will, the host of a sex & relationship radio show and Cobalt, the tattoo artist. There is some good dialogue and the MCs scenes together were strong. I liked the world Cobalt had created for himself after being banished from the realm of the fae. He has his friends Nix and Shade and his business. The introduction of Uriskel, the semi threatening Unseelie added an element of uncertainty and danger. Where the book fell flat was in explaining Will's relationship with Lyle and any real story behind Cobalt's banishment. There are more stories in this series so it's possible more is explained there.

This is the second book I've read within the week where a character was abused and I'm finding I don't like books like that. Will was a punching bag for Lyle and I just couldn't figure out why a supposedly intelligent man would allow that type of relationship to continue. So that aspect of the story ruined the rest of the story for me.

Uriskel was the most interesting character in the story for me. I found Cobalt to be a tad bit weak. Yes I understand that he wanted to protect Will but he could have been stronger for me. Not sure if I'll continue on with the series.

Just adored this engaging m/m paranormal romance. DJ Will escapes from abusive Cop Lyle and finds true love with delicious Fae tattoo artist Cobalt. Wow, there are two more in the series, can't wait?

He placed a kiss on his forehead. "Let me worship you." Will decided he'd died. Lyle must have killed him. And heaven was Cobalt.

A brutal but very good beginning to what I hope is a worthwhile series. I enjoyed Cobalt and Will thoroughly and even got wrapped up in their angst as both men are damaged. I was surprised by Uriskel toward the end. Well plotted, with a good flow and enough surprises to keep this quick read interesting.

Quite good urban fantasy m/m romance that was a bit hard for me to read at points, due to graphic violence in a domestic abuse situation. I am glad I persevered.

cute little fantasy book.
a bit quick paced but i didn't mind it that much.

the on page abuse was heartbreaking and i almost couldn't handle it, but thank god it was kind of brief and without many details.

the lyles (and the eoghans) of this world need to die horrible deaths.🫶🏻

i loved cobalt and how well will took to him being a fae.
