About the author

Andrei Kurkov is a Russian and Ukrainian writer who writes in Russian (fiction) and Ukrainian (non-fiction) languages.

Kurkov was born in small town of Budogoszcz, Russia on April 23, 1961. When Kurkov was young, his family moved to Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1983 Kurkov graduated Kyiv Pedagogical Academy of Foreign Languages and later also completed a Japanese translation training.

Among Kurkov's most famous Russian novels are 'Smert postoronnego' (1996, translated into English in 2001 under the title 'Death and the Penguin') and 'Zakon ulitki' (2002, translated into English in 2005 under the title 'Penguin lost)'. Kurkov's only Ukrainian non-fiction book is 'Ruh "Emanus": istoriya solidarnosti' (2017).

نقطه ی قوت این کتاب نثر ساده و صمیمی آن است که البته آن هم در فصل های پایانی یک پارچگی اش را از دست می دهد . این نثر ساده ،یک احساس راحتی در مخاطب ایجاد می کند . حال به این نثر ساده اگر مقداری تعلیق هم اضافه شود ، خواننده را به آسانی مجبور به ورق زدن کتاب می کند که دقیقا نویسنده از این شیوه ی رندانه استفده کرده است و تعلیق را چاشنی همه ی پارت های این کتاب کرده است . به شکلی که در پایانِ هر پارتِ آن ، گره ای اضافه می شود که شما را به وسوسه می اندازد تا ببینید بعد چه می شود

البته از یک جایی به بعد - از حدودا پارت بیست و پنج به بعد -دیگر گره ای در داستان وجود ندارد و واقعا دلیلی برای خواندن ادامه ی کتاب و با خبر شدن از جزئیات بی مصرفِ زندگیِ فردی که دچار روزمرگی شده است ، نداشتم
در بخش های پایانی کتاب اشتباهات فراوانی وجود دارد. نثر بشدت تغییر می کند و از حالت ساده و صمیمی تبدیل به نثر کلاسیک و ثقیل می شود . تعلیق و گره افکنی عملا وجود ندارد.
و از همه بدتر در انتهای کتاب ما یک تغییرِ صد و هشتاد درجه ای در شخصیت اصلی مشاهده می کنیم که کاملا غیر منطقی و بدون دلیل و ناگهانی است. فردی که دچار روزمرگی شده است و شب ها را با دوستش به میگساری می گذراند و از زنش جدا شده است و هیچ احترامی برای شخصیت زن ها قائل نیست و آن ها را صرفا وسیله ای برای ارضای جنسی می داند، تبدیل به فیلسوفی میشود که راه به راه واردِ دیالوگ ها و مونولوگ هایی با بارِ فلسفی می شود و نظریه صادر می کند و مقام زن را خیلی والا می داند. این تغییر کاملا غیر منطقی و غیر قابل باور است. من شخصیت بی مصرف اما بی آلایشِ قبلی را به این نقاب ترجیح میدادم.


مشکل دیگر کتاب نقطه ی اوج آن - جایی که قرار است شخصیت اول به قتل برسد -است که بشدت توصیف در آن ضعیف است و آن طور که باید ، حس و حال نقطه ی اوج را به مخاطب انتقال نمی دهد. آنقدر ضعیف بود که حتی من احتمال دادم نویسنده قصد فریب داشته باشد ، اما در صفحات بعدی متوجه شدم که هیچ فریبی در کار نبود و کاملا نقطه ی اوج ضعیفی داشتیم


در کل کتابی نیست که بعد از خواندن آن ، احساس کنید چیزی به شما اضافه شده است ، یک روایت ساده بود که برای خواندن در اتوبوس می تواند مفید باشد . من این جور کتاب ها را پیشنهاد نمی کنم

نام اصلی رمان «اهمیت مرگ و زندگی» ست که اولین بار در سال ۱۹۹۶ به زبان روسی منتشر شده است.

این کتاب در سال ۱۹۹۷ تبدیل به فیلمی به نام

بنام (یک دوست مرحوم) شده است که ظاهرا مترجم نام فارسی این کتاب را از این فیلم گرفته است.

«من یک قاتل قراردادی استخدام کردم» ساخت که قهرمانش قاتلی برای کشتن خودش استخدام میکند. مضمونی شبیه به همین رمان.

دوست مرحوم من یک نوولای پیج ترنر است که در یک روز می شود مطالعه اش کرد. اثر به بخش های کوچک دو، سه صفحه ای تقسیم شده است که باعث جذابیت و سریع پیش رفتن رمان می شود.
قبل از هر چیز باید از کیفیتِ ویراستاری ضعیف و در برخی موارد گنگ بودن ترجمه شکایت کنم. جملاتی وجود دارد که گاه باید چندین و چند بار بخوانید و در نهایت با پس و پیش کردن چند واژه در ذهنتان به معنای واقعی اش پی ببرید.
طرح جلد کتاب بیشتر مناسب کاور بازی هیتمَن است تا جلد یک کتاب با مضمون مردی افسرده حال که تصمیم می گیرد به روشی جدید خودکشی کند. صد حیف که اینجا از در دست گرفتن یک کتاب با جلد شکیل محرومیم

پروتاگونیستِ اثر جوانی بنام تولیا ست که رگه هایی از هولدن کالفیلد (ناطور دشت)، کریستین دنجرفیلد (مرد زنجبیلی) و هنک (هزارپیشه) دارد ولی هیچکدام آنها نیست.
او مانند هولدن عاصی ست و چندان حوصله مردم را ندارد، مانند دنجرفیلد از در قید و بند زن ها قرار گرفتن فراری ست و مانند هنک بهترین یارش الکل است. و مثل هر سه آنها ارزش چندانی برای زندگی، آنطور که برای بقیه مردم اهمیت دارد قائل نیست.
هسته رمان حول یک ماجرایی که میتوان از آن به عنوان یک تبصره ۲۲ یاد کرد شکل میگیرد. قهرمان اثر میخواهد زنده بماند در صورتیکه خودش قاتلی استخدام کرده است تا به قتل برساندش.

داستان از این قرار است. (هشدارِ اسپویل)
تولیا، جوانِ اوکراینیِ افسرده ی سی ساله ای که بیکار و بی پول است و زنش در حال خیانت کردن به اوست تصمیم میگیرد خودکشی کند و البته جوری اینکار را بکند که همین عمل، مهم ترین، برجسته ترین و شاهکار زندگیِ بی هدفش باشد. پس چه چیزی بهتر از مرگی که همه را انگشت به دهان بگذارد؟
او از طریق یکی از دوستانش یک قاتل قراردادی ارزان استخدام می کند. هدف را فاسق زنش معرفی میکند ولی آدرس، مشخصات و عکس خودش را برای قاتل ارسال میکند که هیچگاه او را ندیده و هیچگاه هم نخواهد دید.
با این مرگ، همه، همسایه ها، دوستان و حتی زن خیانت کارش چشمشان چهارتا می شود. تولیا!! به قتل رسیده!!!
قاتل فراری شده!! قتل کار یک حرفه ای بوده!! مگر تولیا چه سر و سری داشته؟
همه چیز حساب شده است. حالا او دو روزِ آخرِ عمرش را وقت دارد تا هر کاری بخواهد بکند. اما مثلا چه کاری؟ برانگیختن احساسات زنش از طریق یک نامه؟ نوشتن نامه به یک دوست قدیمی در مسکو؟ که وقتی می نویسد آنقدر بی اهمیت است که خودش میگوید می تواند همین متن را برای هزار نفر دیگر هم ارسال کند.
قدم زدن در خیابانهای کیف؟ که باعث می شود کسل کننده ترین روز مردی که آخرین روز عمرش است رقم بخورد.
اما یک اتفاق و یک اشتباه تمام محاسبات را به هم می ریزد. تولیا به دلیل تاخیر مزدور در روز موعود نمی میرد. همان شب در حالیکه با ترس در حال بازگشت به خانه است با دختر فاحشه ی زیبا رویی آشنا می شود و او را با خود به خانه می برد بدون اینکه پولی داشته باشد به او بدهد.

کمی بعد او از طریق دوستش دیما مبلغ ۱۰۰۰ دلار پول کثیف کسب میکند. تولیا در ابتدا تردید دارد این کار را که یک شهادت دروغ است انجام بدهد یا نه ولی برای آدمی که قصد دارد خودکشی کند اخلاق و وجدان چندان در اولویت نیست.
تولیا که از (شما بخوانید معاشرت) با لنا لذت برده حالا از خودکشی منصرف شده ولی از طریق زن کافه چی متوجه می شود که قاتلش به دنبال اوست.
حالا او هزار دلار پول دارد (که برای مدتها او را ساپورت میکند)، زنش او را ترک کرده و او از این بابت خوشحال است، با دختری زیبا دوست شده است که او را اسیر قید و بند نمی کند. پس حالا دیگر برای چه بمیرد؟
اما حالا عزراییل در قامت قاتلی بنام کوستیا به دنبال اوست.
او که در روز موعود غفلت کرده بوده حالا به جد تصمیم دارد تا کار را انجام دهد و از خجالت کارفرمایش در بیاید. تولیا که می بیند قاتل در به در دنبالش میگردد یک کهنه سرباز جنگ افغانستان را استخدام میکند تا قاتلش را بکشد. قاتلی برای کشتن قاتلش
اما زمانیکه موفق می شود کوستیا را به قتل برساند با دیدن عکس زن و بچه او دچار عذاب وجدان میشود و سعی میکند حداقل کاری برای آنها بکند.
دوست مرحوم من رمانی ست که احتمالا دچار سانسور شده است. متاسفانه نتوانستم کتاب را به زبان انگلیسی پیدا کنم تا یک مقایسه کوچک انجام بدهم ولی به دلیل دوستی پروتاگونیست با یک زن فاحشه و سپس رابطه اش با همسر بیوه کوستیا و البته زن خیانت کار خودش بعید است که رمانی شسته رُفته و بدون سکانس های جنسی باشد.
از خواندن کتاب نسبتا لذت بردم هر چند غرق آن نشدم. رمانیست که برای یک بعد از ظهر پیشنهاد میکنم و امیدوارم لذت ببرید

بعد از «مرگ و پنگوئن» که واقعا کتاب درخشانی بود، دومین کتابی بود که از این نویسنده خوندم. به قدرت کتاب قبلی نبود به‌هیچ‌وجه. اما رمان جذابی بود. شاید تقریبا در یک سوم پایانی، داستان کمی از ریتم می‌افتاد و اونقدر قدرت پیش‌برندگی نداشت. مشت نویسنده باز شده بود و دیگه چیز زیادی برای ارائه نداشت (تقریبا شبیه مرگ و‌پنگوئن که در قسمت هایی از نیمه‌ی دوم یه سکته در ریتم و کشش داشت. اما اونجا خیلی خوب این افت رو جمع کرده‌بود نویسنده و کتاب رو با قدرت به پایان برده بود)
نکته‌ی مهم و اصلی تغییر اسم کتاب در نسخه‌ی فارسیه. اسم اصلی کتاب هست: مساله‌ی مرگ و زندگی. که هم اسم قشنگ و هم جذابیه و هم متناسب با داستان. اما «دوست مرحوم‌من» از بیخ و بن غلطه! یعنی کل علمای نشری که اسم کتاب رو تغییر دادن عقل‌هاشون رو گذاشتن روی هم و اسمی انتخاب کردن که هیچ سنخیتی با داستان نداره و نشون میده ناشر درکی از ادبیات نداره. واقعا انتخاب اسم جذاب(هرچند اسم اصلی هم جذابه) به چه قیمتی؟

کتاب خوبی بود، هم داستان جالب و سرگرم کننده ای داشت و هم دیالوگا و متنای خوب و عالی و هم اینکه از همه مهم تر حجمش خیل�� کمه و میشه یه شبه در عرض چن ساعت راحت خوندش و لذت برد ازش، توصیه میکنم بخونین کتاب خوبیه،

اولین بار که با کورکوف اشنا شدم سال 87 بود از طریق روزنامه شهروند امروز،بخشی که کتاب های روز را معرفی میکرد، اثری به نام مرگ و پنگوئن با ترجمه شهریار وقفی پور.... ان روزها را بخاطر می آورم... پیچیده در حس نا امیدی و فردایی تیره، بدون چشم داشت به اینده ای روشن.درست در همان روزها که توی رختخوابم دراز می کشیدم؛ و تهی بودنم را دردمندانه لمس میکردم ؛ تنهاکتاب خوانی شده بود پناهگاهم. فقط برای خرید کتاب از خانه بیرون میرفتم، هفته ای یک یا دوبار،درس�� مثل الان ... تو قرنطینه خود خواسته و خانگی بودم؛ وضع خیلی غم انگیزی بود.یادم می اید به هیچ کدام از دوستانم تلفن نمی زدم.می خواستم ببینم کدامشان دیوار و حصاری که دور خودم کشیده بودم می شکنند و به سراغم می ایند.... از ان روزها تا امروز و فضای قرنطینه این روزها.. که اتفاقا بعضی ها هم مثل من هستند و پایبند به اصول قرنطینه، خیلی چیزها عوض شده. می توانم بگویم کورکوف خوانی تو این روزها چقدر میچسبد.،چقدر کورکوف خوانی دل پذیر است و همسو با فضایی که در ان گیر افتادیم،... داستان دوست مرحوم من؛ داستان مرد نا امید و افسرده ای است که یک قاتل اجاره ای را برای کشتن خودش اجیر می کند...طی مجموعه اتفاقاتی مرد نا امید؛روای، از خود کشی پشیمان می شود... اما مرد قاتل سخت در تعقیب او برای تمام کردن کارش هست.... داستان ضرب اهنگ مناسبی دارد. خیلی خوب و سریع وارد ماجرا میشویم. و از ان
دست کتاب هاست که ترجیح میدهی تمام شود تا بروی سراغ کتابی دیگر. تعلیق نویسنده تو را خوب همراه میکند. داستان چند نقطه اوج خوب دارد. شخصیت ها صریح و روشن به تو معرفی میشوند...لزومی نمی بینی خیلی وارد فضای فکری شخصیت ها بجز اول شخص و روای بشوی.با اینحال انقدر سیر ماجراها در کتاب کشش دارد که تو را همراه کند. دیشب دوستی حرف قشنگی به من زد. گفت سارا تو از فراستی بدت می اید .چون بی دلیل تخریب می کند، تو هم گاهی ،چیزی،فیلمی ،رمانی را که با سلیقه ات جور نیست نفی میکنی.. دیدم راست می گوید این روزهاهرچیزی که در دیگران ایراد می گیرم در خودم خیلی پررنگ تر می بینم،می خواهم تمرین کنم با دلیل حرف بزنم . من این کتاب را دوست داشتم به دلیل قصه پر کشش اش،،شخصیت پردازی خوب و روایت روان. گرچه دوست داشتم کمی نویسنده عمیق تر به ذهن شخصیت ها نقب میزد،حفاری میکرد و جستجو!... با تمام اوصاف این کتاب کم حجم و خوشخوان را به همه دوستداران رمان توصیه می کنم.زندگی در هم پیچیده شخصیت اول،انتخاب هایی که مارا ،هستی مان را در مسیری دیگر قرار می دهد.ودرد جانکاه تنهایی که شاید مفهوم برجسته ای اثر باشد،درد جانکاه و سوزناک تنهایی تا مغز استخوان درکش میکنی،تا ته ته اعماق وجودت،... همه و همه من را غرق لذت کرد . دیشب که کتاب را تمام کردم روی تختخواب دراز کشیدم .آن را بستم وروی قفسه سینه ام گذاشتم، لرزش خفیفی از وجد بخاطر تمام کردن این اثر در بدنم سُرید...از ته قلبم عاشق کورکوف شدم بعد از کامو،مودیانو،انگار کورکف شده نویسنده مورد علاقه ام... خلاصه که،این کتاب را بخوانید حداقل یک بعد ازظهر تابستانی شما همراه شخصیت اول می روید به حکومت دیکتاتوری و سرما زده اکراین ... وسط چهله تابستان خواندن از سرمای منفی 15 درجه 20 درجه...مثل یک بستنی یخی می ماند...این ها را گفتم؛ ولی از ویراستاری افتضاح نشر نیماژنگفتم جان هر کسی که دوست دارید یا به زبان دیگری کتاب را بخوانید یا از نشر دیگری.!!!.. این نیماژبا ان ویراستاری فاجعه بارش عیش کورکوف خوانی من را به طیش خزان مبدل کرد.....

What can I say? I have a bias for Russian satire, and I freely admit that. I've been thinking about this for a couple of days, about why this particular genre speaks to me. I think a big part of this is because I feel like I, and my entire generation, cannot bear to hear the truth in its pure form. It needs to come to us as a parody, even a caricature, of itself, and that is why satire is so forceful and stays with us long after we've finished reading.

The premise is ludicrous. Tolya decides that he has had it with his life. He doesn't seem to do much other than moan about his unhappy wife, and he doesn't seem to have a job either. He decides to end it all. He is most likely too cowardly to take a gun to his head or jump off a rooftop, so he hires a contract killer to find him and kill him.

After the killer is hired, he decides he rather likes this whole living business, but is now stuck with a hired assassin targeting him.

As with all satire, everything brilliant in it is read between the lines. And in between the lines, you can read some pretty hardcore truths. One of my favorite parts of the story was in the beginning where he learns about a Western game where people try to connect themselves with celebrities through a chain of people (akin to six degrees of Kevin Bacon, etc). He thinks that this is amusing, and when he tries to do it, he finds that he can only link himself to the big names in his country through contract killers. I guess for reading between the lines this one sort of jumps out of the page and yells at you; a direct assault against the government that is linked to its people through blood. This was published in 1996, and so Russia was still recovering from the Soviet era, still sort of in a daze, as though waking up from a long slumber. A lot of this book is like that; there are references to mist, dimness - my favorite phrase was "Out of the dimness into grey lighting." How maudlin!

There are so many good questions and ideas that this book raises, out of just over 100 pages. Why can't Tolya value his life until he thinks it is going to end?
When he gets his life back, what does he do about it to make it better? Does he cherish his family or friends any more? No. Does he get a job or go pursue a life-long ambition? He doesn't seem to have any.

I was going to give this book five stars, but I changed my mind, because I think that the ending was slightly disappointing, and when I think about the fact that I gave Bulgakov and Gogol five stars for their books... this doesn't quite achieve that level of razor-sharp irony and satire and all-round kookiness. Still, four stars, and Kurkov is now officially on my radar.

A satirical novel from a former Soviet writer carries with it a huge burden of expectation; anything of that nature from the part of the world that we used to loosely call 'Russia' (actually, the Ukraine in Kurkov's case) is always going to be measures against masters of the form like Gogol and Bulgakov, who happen to also be two writers whom I hold in very high esteem. This particular novella certainly falls short of such illustrious exemplars, but is quite a diverting read on its own. It follows the fortunes of a man who has decided to end his own life by the novel means of hiring a contract killer to kill him. Things don't go according to plan, and in some ways what follows is a little too neat, but Kurkov's evocation of a winter in Kiev and some of his observations on human nature make up for a lot. It's hard to judge voice in translation, I suppose, but there is a certain appeal in the matter of fact, unsentimental tone of the narrative as well. There are satirical elements here, but they don't seem to run especially deep. However, it was a good little novella all in all, very well structured and executed within its limitations and I will definitely be checking out Kurkov's other works on the strength of this.

I discovered Andrey Kurkov's 'A Matter of Death and Life' recently. I haven't heard of Andrey Kurkov before and this book was slim and so I thought I'll read it.

The narrator of the story is going through a difficult phase in life. His marriage is collapsing, it appears that his wife is having an affair with someone, he is unemployed, his bank balance is low, he doesn't seem to have any friends. One day he decides to do something which he thinks will be spectacular. He decides to hire a hitman to kill him. He makes arrangements and is resigned to his fate, and thinks about how he will be in the news when it happens and he'll become famous and people will look at him differently. But at some point things start looking up, and he even finds some happiness and he doesn't want to die anymore. But how do you stop a hitman from executing his contract? Not possible, isn't it? What happens after that is darkly comic and unravels like a Coen Brothers movie.

I loved reading 'A Matter of Death and Life'. Andrey Kurkov's prose is spare and there is no superfluous sentence, no wasted word. The pages fly, though occasionally there is a Dostoevskian passage. For example, this passage, which could have easily been in a Dostoevsky novella –

"I found the glaring whiteness of the paper irritating. My urgent concern to make the most of what time I had left seemed suddenly totally devoid of meaning. See who? Ring who? I was needed by no-one, and needed nobody. A fact so obvious as to prompt an icy shiver followed by more positive thoughts, amongst which was the absolute rightness of my decision in favour of suicide. Collecting yet another coffee and taking a colder, more realistic view, I deleted “Ring Nina”, and was at last free to devote to myself such time as remained."

Kurkov's dark humour zings throughout the book and it makes us smile. For example, this passage –

"Outside, the sun was shining, though to no useful purpose at this time of the year. Still, millions of citizens would be glad of it. Taking pleasure in what served no useful purpose had become a habit, and something I was fond of doing."

There is a beautiful love story in the middle of the book, which was very unexpected. I'm not sure exactly what happened in the end though – I have a few thoughts on that, and if you have read the book, I'd love to discuss it with you.

Andrey Kurkov is Ukrainian, but he writes in Russian. This is one of his earlier books. He has since written many books, and I'm excited to explore more of his work.

اولین کتابی که از andrey kurkov خوندم و باعث شد علاقه مند شم به بیشتر خوندن ازش . کتاب شاهکار ادبی نیست و در پی شاهکار شدن هم نیست نقص های زیادی هم داره اما مضمون جالبش و تعلیقی که در انتهای هر پارت کوتاه کتاب قرار گرفته آدمو به خوندن سوق میده طوریکه نمی تونین چشم از صفحات بردارین و مثل تماشای یه فیلم سینمایی تا انتهای کتاب یک نفس ادامه ش می دین. داستان کتاب داستان تولیا ست که در دوران پساکمونیسم ، معضلات سیاسی و مشکلات جامعه با بحران های مختلفی در زندگی شخصی ش هم دست و پنجه نرم می کنه . دچار تنهایی و افسردگی شدیدی شده ، در روابط خودش شکست خورده ، همسرش ترکش کرده و با مرد دیگه ای زندگی‌ می کنه، دوستان زیادی نداره ، امیدی برای زندگی نداره و نهایتا تصمیم به خودکشی میگیره و برای این کار فردی ر�� به طور ناشناس اجیر می کنه تا به قتلش برسونه ؛ در این میان حوادثی رخ میده که هم بر تولیا‌ تاثیر گذارند و هم تولیا در اون ها نقش داره . شخصیت منفعل ابتدای کتاب به فاعل خواه ناخواه اثرگذار میانه کتاب تبدیل میشه طوری که زندگی دوباره براش معنا پیدا می کنه و سعی می کنه قاتل دیگری رو این بار برای محافظت از خودش در برابر قاتلی که اجیر کرده ، استخدام کنه و نمایه هایی از یک کمدی سیاه در بطن یک تراژدی رقم می خوره . تقابل بین مرگ و زندگی تا جایی از کتاب جذاب هست اما همین کانسپت هم بعد از نقطه اوج داستان فروکش می کنه و باز به واقعیت کثیفی که همین روزمرگی‌ شخصیت هست می رسیم. سراسر کتاب آمیخته از تعلیق مابین همین بی معنایی و معناست. معنایی که حتی اگر باور کنیم - هر چند دور - تولیا در انتها بهش نزدیک میشه ، معنا و مفهومی گنگ است . معنایی از جنس زندگی بی هدف و گذران بدنبال حوادث و تا چه پیش آید ، چیزی که شاید حتی از بی معنایی‌ و تنهایی فلسفی ابتدای کتاب هم بی معنا تر جلوه کنه . نقاط اوج کتاب و پایان بندی کتاب چشم گیر نیستند و در واقع همون روزمرگی های شخصیتند کتاب قصد نداره که اثر گذار باشه ��ا در ذهن خواننده ادامه پیدا کنه بلکه تنها می خواد آینه ی تمام نمایی باشه از زندگی یک فرد به نام تولیا با همه روزمرگی های ملال آور و بی اهمیتیش با همه ی افکار پوچ و تهی ش .

Prieten drag, tovarăș al răposatului este cea mai recentă traducere din Andrei Kurkov (Editura Curtea Veche, 2012, traducere din limba rusă de Antoaneta Olteanu, 120 de pagini), cel mai cunoscut și aclamat autor ucrainean care scrie, cu mici excepții, în limba rusă. Și-a început cariera literară pe când era paznic la o închisoare din Odessa, din 1996 dedicându-se exclusiv scrisului. A fost întâmpinat de critica literară cu entuziasm, fiind tradus în peste 30 de limbi. Scriitorul însuși are povești de viață fascinante, năucitoare, majoritatea întâmplări dintr-un Est nemilos, sărac, umilit și epuizat – despre acestea însă, veți afla în curând într-un interviu pe care Kurkov mi l-a acordat la FILIT pentru Bookaholic.

Cărțulia despre care vă voi vorbi astăzi este o mică bijuterie care se citește cu sufletul la gură. Tolia, personajul principal și naratorul volumului, este un tânăr puțin peste 30 de ani, cu o căsnicie ratată, fără slujbă (deși are studii superioare), fără niciun chef de a mai trăi din pricina lipsurilor și a vieții rutinate. Este un ins comod, așa că, atunci când se hotărăște să-și încheie socotelile cu viața, nu are curajul de a o face. Curând însă, găsește soluția ideală: să fie omorât. The premise of this novel was a lot more promising than it turned out to be. The idea of arranging to have yourself assassinated because you are so sick of life, yet not able to commit suicide, is very appealing. And also very easy to relate to I think. Many of us have at one point or another given it a thought or two, perhaps not seriously, but fleetingly. Murdered, you will be of greater interest than you ever were in your life. Murdered, your memory will last forever.

Yet, for Tolya, things don't go according to plan. He decides he wants to live after all, after it is too late.

Sounds interesting right? Well, I'm afraid it was a little underwhelming. I would have liked to see Tolya die (after trying to escape death), and have people wonder what had happened to him. Perhaps bring in his wife (who had left him for another guy) and make her play a bigger role in the story. Instead, not only does Tolya successfully escape death, but he ends up with two relationships (when he had just gotten out of the biggest failed relationship), and finds himself dragged into the depths of depravity (think murder, bribery, thievery and so on).

Not what I expected going into it. It is quite a short story, and very easy to read, and there are many good thoughts and ideas in the book that I've found myself marking down. However, the storyline itself was quite disappointing, and could have been enhanced tremendously.

All in all, a quick read, and not bad with it being my first Kurkov book.

Proiectată într-un univers gri şi absurd, în Kievul postsovietic, drama personajului creat de Kurkov e destul de banală. Cărţi despre sinucidere (mereu pe un ton ironic) am citit în ultima vreme de m-am săturat. Dar Tolia, prea laş din fire pentru a-şi face singur felul şi dorind ceva original, angajează un altul să-i pună capăt zilelor. Şi acesta ar fi în mod normal un subiect răsuflat, dacă autorul n-ar fi venit cu un final surprinzător, diferit de variantele Hollywoodiene.

This was my first book by this author and I loved it. The theme life doesn't count but at least the death should is not new, not even in this comedy setup. The book covers very well the hesitations of the main character, his reasoning, the preparations for his own death, the projection of this action in the news. Will he succeed to die in a meaningful way?

The story is somehow similar to the plot in Romanian movie Tache. The characters have different reasons to die, but they both want their death to be significant.

How do I even…. review this..
Disclaimer - it may very well be that this was just not the sort of literature I am used to or am able to appreciate… but damn.
The main character’s outlook on life.. or rather the narrator’s description (1st person POV) of it was quite superficial. Seeing as it was written in the mid 90s in a post-Soviet territory, it is not surprising how women are viewed in this story (not to say that this attitude is only characteristic to this male demographic and that it’s not present today - it all depends on the writer), which made it even funnier (and illogical) how the MC makes a 180 turn in his attitude towards the end. He’s quite cynical, and there is no character development whatsoever. I could not detect any internal conflict or struggles, not really. The narrator tells us that the mc struggled, but it didn’t come across as such. He just went along in life using people and opportunities, and that’s the story of this guy. It was especially disappointing how the ending was just incredible scrambled together in, like, one page, just to finish the story.

Funny story: I saw the movie version of this book (A Friend Of The Deceased) at the Hong Kong International Film Festival years before I picked up this book in 2006, but I didn't make the connection – I just kept thinking the story in this novella seemed awfully familiar (depressed cuckold in Kiev doesn’t have the nerve to commit suicide, so he hires a contract killer to kill him. Then, life gets better and he changes his mind. Black comedy ensues). I double-checked afterwards, and yep, same guy. In fact, Kurkov wrote the screenplay for the film version. I recommend both (though be warned, the film version is pretty slow).

Kurzmeinung / Leseerlebnis
Die Geschichte hat mir gut gefallen. Ich wollte stets wissen, wir es weiter geht und Tolja ist ein nachvollziehbarer Charakter. Es hätte an einem Nachmittag gelesen werden können auch Dank des Schreibstils.
Mein erster Roman des ukrainischen Autors, ich wäre nicht abgeneigt ein weiteres von ihm zu lesen.

After Death and the Penguin I'd been eager to read more from Kurkov, despite having The Good Angel of Death sitting on my shelf it was the pleasure of finding an attractive and slim novella of this title on the non-fiction shelf of a local bookstore that finally got me enthused enough to take a second helping of the king (tsar? something else more relevant?) of post-Soviet literature.

The jacket compares Kurkov to Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoyevsky but with no experience of either of those authors to date I prefer to draw comparisons with Haruki Murakami. Both authors use a similar matter of fact tone and both seem to feature a despondent protagonist more often than not, all serving to provide deep roots in a believable reality through which we can accept the slightly surreal elements of their novels.

The general conceit of this story is a fascinating one and leads to a series of slightly absurd and unbelievable events happening around a central character who lives primarily in isolation, the story told more as a series of thoughts and feelings than a running narrative. I could see room for development of the characters and the story, easily allowing this to have become another large political novel from Kurkov but the strength of this one is in the brevity and concise nature of the telling.g

Die Ehe von Tolja hatte sich auseinander gelebt. Seine Frau hat einen Freund. Durch Zufall trifft er einen ehemaligen Schulkollegen, der ihm einen Killer vermittelt, der den Nebenbuhler beseitigen soll. Tolja gibt aber sich selbst als der Freund der Frau aus. Fotografiert sich selbst und macht einen Treffpunkt aus, wo ihn der Profikiller töten soll. Die letzten Stunden denkt er über sein Leben nach und überlegt, was er alles noch erledigen solle. Als er dann im vereinbarten Café sitzt und auf seinen Tod wartet, beschließt die Besitzerin das Lokal frühzeitig zu schließen und er verfehlt seinen Mörder. Der Auftragskiller wollte aber seine Arbeit erledigen und Tolja wollte nicht mehr sterben. Er griff zur Gegenwehr und bestellte selbst einen Killer, der seinen Auftragskiller umbrachte. Letztendlich endete Tolja – wie in einem kitschigen Roman – als Ehemann der Witwe.
Ein sehr witziges und gut geschriebenes Buch. Traurig und komisch und schön geschrieben.

Comme il n'a pas assez de courage pour se faire exploser la t?te tout seul, il embauche un tueur dont il est lui-m?me la cible. Le probl?me est qu'il finit par reprendre go?t ? la vie et l?, il est bien emb?t?. Ce roman est en quelque sorte le pr?curseur du Pingouin. L'auteur d?veloppe la th?se de l'absurde qui devient r?alit?. Mais contrairement aux romans suivants il n'y a pas de r?f?rences politiques.

از طنز شروع مي شه و فكر مي كني با طنز تلخي سر و كار داري رفته رفته مي رسي به جايي كه مي بيني با يك تراژدي زندگي انسانهايي كه انگار روح ندارند سر و كار داري ، هدف ندارند ، زندگيشون در سطحي ترين بي معني ترين حالت خودش مي گذره بي هيچ تفكر عميقي .. كاراكترهاي داستان با پلتشتي ، بي وفايي ، مرگ ، فقر خيلي راحت كنار ميان و زندگي رو بي معني تر از هر چيزي جلوه مي كنند . كليد ارامش خشونت و كشتن است پشت هيچ كارشون تفكري نيست با اعمالشون مي گن همينه كه هست . در اين رمان دنيا هرزه اي بيش نيست .

I picked up the book because of its bizarre plot and because I wanted to entertain myself with something other than philosophy/science. I barely remember the last time I read fiction so this was a pleasurable experience for my brain :)

The book is a page-turner, flows nicely, has a wildly creative story and is completely immersed with dark humour!
