Robert Hans van Gulik was a Dutch diplomat best known for his Judge Dee stories. His first published book, The Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, was a translation of an eighteenth-century Chinese murder mystery by an unknown author; he went on to write new mysteries for Judge Dee, a character based on a historical figure from the seventh century. He also wrote academic books, mostly on Chinese history.

Formerly completely unknown to me, this Robert van Gulik. He appears to be not only a Dutch diplomat, but parallel to this career was the author of many books in the detective genre, with as main protagonist the Chinese judge Tie, as he is called in the Dutch translation by the author from his original English, where the main character is called judge Dee. The English title of ‘Vier vingers’ is ‘The morning of the monkee’.
One other Dutch person with these two occupations, writer of fiction and ambassador, is Carel Jan Schneider, whose pen name was F. Springer. (only for the record)
The story has a traditional cast, with the judge as the thinker and a helper as the material supplier annex assistent. Together they solve the problem, in less than twentyfour hours. Well, the judge knows the people in the local and regional community. The story develops calmly, it has a nice couleur locale, and that ’s it. In my opinion nothing special or extraordinary, but I can imagine Van Gulik has many fans. JM

Oude liefde.

Van Gulik's Judge Dee stories are wonderful. The stories were for many Sinologists of my generation the reason they were drawn to study Chinese. This little book was very enjoyable. Baffling goings on, expertly detected and unravelled by the excellent Judge Dee and his men.

Very entertaining! I think this does fall a bit short of the quality of most of the full length novels in the Judge Dee series, even taking the length difference into account, so I'm sticking with a rating of a solid 3 stars. But it sure reminded me why I should be rereading all the other ones some time soon :)!
