Librarian note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name
Jeff Lemire is a New York Times bestselling and award winning author, and creator of the acclaimed graphic novels Sweet Tooth, Essex County, The Underwater Welder, Trillium, Plutona, Black Hammer, Descender, Royal City, and Gideon Falls. His upcoming projects include a host of series and original graphic novels, including the fantasy series Ascender with Dustin Nguyen.
The weakest issue thus far. We finally have everyone's backstory and Laura escapes safely. However, the issues just before Romie's revelation about the vampire elders were slow. The pacing in this series is slow and I've been mostly fine with it, but it feels like Jeff Lemire has dragged on too much before bigger things happened. Not that everything before this was filler, just it needs to pick up.
This book has been meandering in the last several issues. At first, the laze was a strength: I could read countless issues of kid vampires roaming a desolate city - as long as they are gorgeously illustrated by Dustin Nguyen. Then, Lemire has to come along and introduce a Plot - but it feels half-cocked and lacking stakes. So there are some humans around and there are some old vampires around, and…? Maybe when more is revealed next issue (as the end of #9 teases) we’ll be able to backfill some of the gravitas for the plot points. Right now, I just wish we could go back to issues of kid vampires running around a desolate city, stunningly illustrated.
After issue #9 we finally have all the characters' back stories on how they came to be a vampire. The reader finally gets to see the characters change their focus to why the adults left and some of the more internal conflicts the vampires typically face.
This issue was a little slower for me, but I feel it was needed to set the stage for the upcoming issues to finish this series.
