Zathyn Priest

11 books376 followers
Zathyn Priest is an Australian writer with severe vampiric tendencies. Absolutely convinced the sun could turn him to a pile of ash, Zathyn prefers to write under the cover of darkness. This serves two purposes, with the first being the afore mentioned sunlight danger, and the second being the fact that nighttime means no annoying phones ringing or people knocking at the door.

Zathyn has written three published novels using this strange moonlight technique. The Curtis Reincarnation, which is now available in paperback. The Slayer’s Apprentice, soon to be available in paperback. And, Liquid Glass, soon to be available from Torquere Press. He has also written two short fiction works. Left of Center, available from Torquere Press, and One of Those Days, an eBook downloadable from www.zathynpriest.com - because even though Zathyn has vampiric traits, he’s actually quite a nice guy and wrote One of Those Days as a freebie.

When Zathyn isn’t writing, or running for cover before sunlight turns him to cinders, he likes to pretend he’s really good at playing his MIDI keyboard. Thankfully, Zathyn is a conscientious neighbour. Rather than drive the street insane with repeated renditions of Greensleeves, he uses headphones because, let’s face it, no matter how beautiful Greensleeves is, most people don’t want to hear it one hundred times a night.

Zathyn lives with a retired greyhound called Chrissy, who lives the life of luxury sleeping away most of her days on the sofa and generally only waking up when there’s food around or if it’s time for a walk. There’s also a cat called Fran, who doesn’t like Chrissy very much and feels she should reiterate this fact by occasionally smacking her in the face. Just when you thought the household couldn’t get any stranger, there’s a duck - or drake, he’d probably rather be called - named Charlie who originally lived on a farm, but moved in with Zathyn after a fox ate all his girlfriends and was eying Charlie for dessert.

OMG! I loved this book! I thought the heroes were unique and so well written, they felt like old friends. I wish Zathyn could clone himself so he can write faster because I absolutely love every one of his books! Do yourself a favor and buy this book! Better yet, buy all of his books, they are all awesome!

If you’ve just read a very angst book, a tense one and you are in deep need of a change, something to liven up your mood, give you a good laugh which is always what’s known as the best medicine than I urge you to read this one by Z.

Lewis aka Enigma is a real work of art. He’s wonky, he’s out of this world and he’s totally and completely whacked, but what’s not to like about the guy. Did I forget to add quirky as all Hell? He cracks me up! The shit he pulls on Brandon will not only make your head spin it’ll have you shit yourself laughing that one 5’5 in height guy could be like that. I never knew what to expect from him next. He’s not predictable. Not one bit. You'll find out why.

Brandon although very hot and good looking, never having trouble nabbing and bedding any guy he wants gets brought down more than a peg or two by Enigma. See Brandon confident. See Brandon feel ashamed. See Brandon flustered. Best of all see Brandon beg for what he wants most and follows Lewis’ every order to get him. What starts off as simply meeting different Goth dudes to get laid becomes turnabout fair play that works against Brandon. You’ll be shell shocked when Brandon finds out what we all least expected to happen.

Z pulls off a real good story short story that gives you plenty to talk about, but leaves you with this one warning as it sends out a very clear message if you go very in depth with the words it tries to tell you. I learned something clear and it can happen to anybody: When looking to date or hook-up via internet be careful. Very careful as you’ll learn in this book.

Enjoy!

From the selfish slutty MC to the Goth theme, from the sometimes OTT humor to the abrupt turn into serious territory, this short story shouldn’t have worked for me in any way, shape, or form. But it did.

What a fantastic story! Another short sweet read from Zathyn Priest who's writing style, characters and quirkiness tick my yaay box in a big way.
This is the third story of his I've read now, one a full length novel and including this one, two shorts. I've given 5 stars each time, regardless of length, and as much as I've loved each one, this is definitely my favourite up to now. I have a thing for quirky off the wall characters and ' Enigma ' aka Lewis has to be one of the most weirdly endearing ones Ive ever come across, as well as being fascinatingly odd, he's beautiful and leads Brandon- whose cocky, a bit of a player and goth lover - a real merry dance. The two of them together create a little bit of magic. Like his other stories the humour is dry, witty and snarky and yet he still manages to slip in some tender poignant moments to even the balance. I think whatI loved most of all was the slight twist in the story that you really never see coming making it a sweet oddball romance that I will definitely read again and again and always come away feeling happily sated! I think his stories are like chocolates... You can't just have one, you have to have the lot!! Highly recommend . Big love! :D

Oh my goodness! What an expectedly sweet novella, accompanied by fabulous artwork. This is a very different love story, but also a warm and touching one. Brandon isn't very likeable at first, then meets his match in the one person capable of bringing out his finer qualities.

Lewis flat broke my heart, but as I learned more about him, I discovered he wasn't to be pitied, but admired. He'd been dealt an horrible hand, and played it to the best of his ability. He's one of the most memorable characters I've read.

What's a leading man without the endearingly wise best friend? I absolutely loved Tarin, and Wayne too. Each and every character, including the bustiered waitress who appears briefly, is fully drawn and realistic.

I needed something different today and Left of Centre was more perfect than I dreamed possible. It maded me laugh, cry, smile and, in the end, say, "Aww..." An excellent read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

And the artwork is absolutely amazing.

Highly recommended.

This has to go on my fave list. My hats off to Zathyn Priest. He has given us a short story that easily rivals some full length novels . This quick read has packed in not just a humorous fun story line, but a punch to the gut you never expected. I started this thinking it would be a pretty safe fun easy read with nothing really out of the ordinary. I was looking at it for the comedy value. What I got was exactly what I expected but with just that added bit more that elevates this from a great 4 star to an its brilliant 5 star.

Zathyn Priest is fast becoming one of my all time favourite authors.

This is really an amazing story.
Brandon is really an unusual hero: a true casanova, unscrupulous, selfish, egocentric. He uses people without any remorse.
Enigma always looks bad tempered and has a nasty tongue, he is a worthy opponent for him.
I loved how Brandon's ego is trampled and these scenes are hilarious.
Their meeting disrupts his live. We have lots of surprises: the author reveals things layer by layer.
Zathyn Priest has the art of creating characters that are not found in any other book. They are unique and unforgettable.
I read it 2 times in a row and I can not get enough.

This was such a sweet story. In the beginning I didn't think I would really like Brandon since he was such a player/slut. Lets just say he learned his lesson and found out how much of a bitch Karma can really be. It was laugh out loud funny, too. I actually had to stop reading a few times because I was laughing so hard I couldn't see through my tears!

Its really short so won't take much time to read.

Quite an unforgettable story. Enigma, what a wonderful name it describes him perfectly. No run of the mill romance here, its a cleverly written, wicked, inspiring story. Loved it.

Okay, this book is freaking hilarious! I was laughing non-stop from the start falling-off-chair-laughing

Enigma definitely gives Brandon a run for his money. Enigma lives up to his name (even though that's not his real name) he's puzzling, sarcastic and blunt with an erratic personality. He's creepy but at the same time captivating to Brandon. Brandon's freaked out by Enigma but that doesn't stop him from chasing after him and doing every ridiculous thing Enigma asks which is a total contrast to his player lifestyle.

This was a sweet, funny read. It gives you just enough information about each character for you to know who they are but still keep it a light read. Enigma helps Brandon realize who the person in himself is and then learn from it. At the same time, Brandon isn't the only one who has a fault, Enigma does, too, his is just more of a permanent one and is what ultimately attracts Brandon to Enigma in the first place.

It's short and cute and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for something light and funny.

I was debating between 2 or 3 stars mainly because I didn't like the fact that half of the book was focused mainly on Brandon's exploits of having one night stands...in detail. But I did like the fact that Lewis made for an interesting character.

I noticed that Zathyn Priest has quite the interest in Goth since one of the main characters in The Curtis Reincarnation, Tyler, was also into gothic style and make-up. Just an observation though.

The best part of the book for me was whenever Lewis names his pet fish.Fluffles who had fish vertigo? Adorable!

Another 5 star review for this cute short story

Lots of reviews have already been done, so this one is short and to the point. Lots of laugh-out-loud moments, really engaging characters and a Happy Ever After!!

In the beginning, Brandon is the lexicon entry of an essential prick: narcisstic, self-centered, lying, shallow, cowardly - you name it, a type many of us might know from annoying firsthand experience. Until he meets his master in beautiful, mysterious, capricious Enigma, who makes Brandon taste a big spoonful of his own medicine.
Being forced to look into a mirror and to face the ugliness behind his shiny facade changes Brandon forever. But by the time he realizes what is really important to him, Enigma is gone. Will Brandon manage to reconcile with the man whom he had hurt so deeply?

The beauty of this story is in the way the author made me LIKE Brandon, even though he's a type of guy I normally can't stand. But by the time Enigma was done with him, I rooted for Brandon and crossed my fingers for him to find happiness. And the end was just the icing on the cake, pure perfection. I can only recommend this clever, well-thought out, thoughtful, hilariously funny story!

A very cute/sweet goth story with some unique characterizations. As is often the case with such short stories, I wanted MORE MORE MORE (but not because it felt incomplete )

I loved every bit of this, and usually I’m not one for shorts, there’s just too little to sink my teeth into, so I’m definitely glad I took the bait (a player and a goth, how could I resist?). This was an original (in spite of the opposites attract shtick, which let’s not mince here, is one of my absolute favourite slash formulas), full of shenanigans and even a little honest-to-goodness intrigue, which warmed me a bit to the short-fiction genre. Needless to say, I was very sad to see it end.

The pacing was brilliant, nothing felt overshot or contrived, and it had the feel of a full-length novel, which housed in less than 50 pages, is a huge accomplishment and a huge deal to me. I found myself LOL'ING (yes, in caps lock) quite obnoxiously into the wee hours of the morning (I started reading way past my bedtime, and was an incoherent mess throughout work the next day, and I don’t regret it at all) to a quiet house. I genuinely fell in love with both protagonists before I even had a clear image of them in my mind. Monsieur Priest has a way of creating a sense of true romance as well as some extremely likeable leads. A very satisfying, light read, though I would've simply loved to see these characters laid out over the span of a few hundred more pages. Greedy, perhaps, but a gal can have her pipe dreams. Then again, a gal can also hope for a sequel. Hint hint.

Brandon has always been a player -- he even arranges to meet three person and well, get it on with them. Until the night he meets "Enigma"; who really goes up his name for being weird but at the same time making Brandon hopelessly wanted to pursue him.

What a quirky and at some places wonderfully weird story :). Brandon has truly met his match in Lewis (a.k.a. Enigma). There are some really hilarious (in a smart way) parts. It's witty, it feels original, and the little twist in the end, the truth about Lewis, makes it the story more endearing.

It's official, I am in love with this author...so realize that while I try to remain unbiased I may not do the best job of it!

Left of Center focuses on the life of a self-absorbed, sex-crazed Veterinarian (Brandon) whose online forays have led him to meet up for a one night stand with "Enigma". As the story progresses, for the first time, Brandon is made to face his own shallowness and take stock of a life that is less than stellar while falling hopelessly in love with Enigma's real life persona, Lewis. Lewis is a fragile, brain damaged young man who is struggling to piece his life back together.

My one and only criticism is that the story was way too short---oh god, I wanted more--so much more! These two characters (as I am quickly coming to realize that all of this author's characters) leaped off the page, grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and took me on a ride that alternately broke and warmed my heart. How Mr. Priest manages to fully develop his characters in the relatively little time he does is nothing short of amazing...that he also makes you silently cheer or weep over their experiences is nothing short of a miracle. Yes, dear readers..he is THAT good.

Left of Center, is sweet, slightly quirky, always surprising and downright well written--all you could want in an afternoon's read.

Oh Mr. Priest---do tell me you might consider a sequel for these boys--I am not above begging=:)

This was a really cute little story. It was a steady 4 star read for me until about two thirds of the way in, and then it just got better and better and there was no way I could rate it any less than the 5 stars it so clearly deserves. It's really amazing what this author has achieved with a story of this length. He's managed to deliver something so sweet and touching, something that some authors can't even do with a full length book and a couple of hundred pages.

At the start, Brandon annoyed the hell out of me. Lewis was exactly what he needed, someone to pull his head out of his arse and make him realise what he was missing and where he was going wrong. This story was witty, well written and very funny. I laughed a lot, and the 'table hedgehog' part cracked me up. I love witty dialogue and Lewis definitely provided plenty.

I must thank Monika and Dee for recommending this author because I'm absolutely loving his work and I will definitely be reading Left of Center again (...and again and again)! Zathyn Priest is very quickly becoming one of my favourite m/m authors. I can't wait to read more of his wonderful stories. I think The Curtis Reincarnation is next ;)

Another great book by Zathyn Priest! I am definitely going to be reading anything I can get my hands on by this very talented author! It is amazing to me how much story he is able to pack into only 47 pages.

I was completely taken with Lewis aka “Enigma” what a fitting name, he is cute, funny, sweet and what a wacky personality. That boy had me laughing with his antics, but at the same time he was a sad, frustrated and lonely boy. He meets Brandon aka "Shade"("Shallow" would have been more fitting)...a man whore...he’s been with so many men he can’t remember and that’s not all he can’t remember, he can’t even remember their names as he’s crawling out of their beds to sneak away. I was so prepared to really detest this guy living his life in a way I don’t understand or can condone but the funny thing is I couldn’t!

I loved the story between these two, a story of two men with such completely different personalities and lives meeting and finding love. I’m not going to say anymore you will just have to read it for yourselves! If there was one thing that was disappointing, it's that it was just nowhere near long enough! More please!!!!

Zathyn Priest was the first author I read in the genre and I've been a fan of his ever since I picked up that first book. Left Of Centre was my 2nd of his, read almost 5 years ago. When I found out a few months ago that it was being re-released through Wilde City Press I was eager to jump into it again. I have to say I think I loved it more this go round than when I read the original version way back when. I laughed a lot and fell in love with all the characters all over again. If you're looking for something short, sexy, and a little sweet, you can't go wrong with this book.

Highly recommended.

It must be amazing living inside Zathyn Priest's head. He comes up with the most ingenius story lines ever. You laugh, you cry and you sayWTF more times then you can count. This story wasn't really one of his more angsty ones but it did have an "aww" moment. I tend to figure out the plot pretty easily in most books but this one kept me quessing and more times then not I ended up being wrong. It's quirky as all hell but it was a fun and fast but so worth it read.

What a great story, funny and quirky. This author can put so much into such a short story and then make you sad when it ends. I wanted so much more, but at the same time was given a complete and very satisfying story.

This is a really funny short book. I am a huge fan of this author and any of his book I have read have been 5 star reads. This was no exception and it's the reason I plan on reading more of his work soon. I was amazed by his writing talent and amazing storytelling abilities.

Brandon was not a likable character. That was pretty obvious in the beginning. Even when he was talking about the connection he made with one of the guys he was chatting with, he still wanted to have sex with others. At first I was frustrated by him, but he made me laugh so many times that I had to love him in the end.

Lewis was just amazing and sassy. I was not expecting him to be such an interesting character. Added to that his disability was really incorporated well. I enjoyed his aggressive side and the scene with his mother was hilarious. I was doing my best not to laugh very loud. His little secret was what made the story what is was.

I truly loved the epilogue. It was very sweet and I thought it fitted both these crazy characters. It had that aspect for me that made the story seem a lot sweeter than it probably was. And in the end I got my happy ending.

Recommend this story and the author!
