In this moody short story, bestselling author of The Secret Witness Victor Methos weaves a psychological legal thriller about one lawyer’s quest for a fair trial when the only suspect is his client.

Nick Collins vows to uncover the truth behind an accusation of murder, but as the trial progresses, the only truth he discovers is that his big-city client doesn’t stand a chance against small-town beliefs. If the accused is found guilty until proven innocent, the real killer could still be out there, and there won’t be any heroes left to catch them.

Part 5 of 5 in "We Could be Heroes" collection. They can be read in any order.

Arrested for murder after picking up a hitchhiker? Two lawyers from Las Vegas represent a good samaritan in Bailey, Utah after local authorities arrested him. Can they get him off when DNA is everywhere inside his car?

I had read a few legal thrillers by Victor Methos but it's been a while. I remember how gripping and fast-paced they were, not quite sure why I stopped reading, but I'll have to get back to them! This little story had me sitting on the edge of my seat. So good!

If this is an indication of how methos writes, then I must devour his books from now on. Firstly, I love lawyer novels and this was packed with so much action on little space, which is an accomplishment in itself. I loved the characters and the scary plot. A perfect, short read that was plenty entertaining.

In a Nutshell: A short story combining a psych thriller and a legal drama. Nicely written, but didn’t hit me as hard as I thought it would. Still, a decent finish to this Amazon story collection.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Nick Collins has just been handed his first client accused of murder, a welcome change from his typical civil case clientele. As he strives to find the truth, he discovers that the small town in which his client Ryan is imprisoned has its own way of doing things. Unless he finds some concrete proof about Ryan’s innocence, Ryan seems to have already been judged guilty. Can Nick save Ryan? Is Ryan truly innocent?
This is the fifth and final standalone story in the 'We Could be Heroes’ series, described on Amazon as “a darkly inquisitive collection of short stories that examines heroic intentions versus their real-life consequences.”
I enjoy psych thrillers (when well written) as well as legal dramas. So this story should have been a winner. But somehow, the swing in tempo and style resulted in a hodgepodge reading experience.
With a title like this, I didn't know what to expect. The series has consistently focussed on people being ‘heroes’ and the outcome of their heroism, not always positive. In that sense, this story was more or less as expected. No surprises to offer, at all. Moreover, the title ‘Kill Night’ isn’t exactly indicative of the whole story, just of the first chapter.
Chapter 1, which comes from Ryan’s third-person perspective, is a cracker! I picked up this story before bedtime, and when I reached the end of the first chapter, I regretted not having waited till morning. However, the next chapter shifted gears into Nick’s pov, and when I say ‘shifted gears’, I don’t mean just the change of character perspective but also the change of genre into drama mode and the alteration of tone from dark to general. This immediately dampened the high, and I actually went to sleep in between the story at about the midway mark. Imagine that! Just a 58-page story and I still couldn’t complete it in one go!
I wish the whole story had retained the creep vibe of the first chapter. But it shimmies through typical territory until it revs up the tempo in the climactic scenes and suddenly becomes an action thriller. As such, the overall result was confusing. What was the story trying to be?
What was most disappointing is that many of the interesting sequences happen off the page. The story answers just as much as needed, and either explains the rest through the future conversations or leaves it for us to guess. While there are no major incomplete threads to the narrative, I still felt like it could have done better in this respect, especially in regards to the big reveal.
Not to forget, the forced potential romance annoyed me – I always turn into the Grinch when I see romance in a non-romance work, even if it is limited to the setting up of a first date.
In short, definitely interesting but not memorable. I might have enjoyed it better had it not been split across multiple and distinct writing moods.
I have seen good reviews of this author’s full-length works, but haven’t read any yet. Maybe this author writes novels much better than short stories. I hope to find out for sure some day!
3 stars.
This standalone story is a part of the “We Could Be Heroes” collection, and is currently available free to Amazon Prime subscribers.
Thus ends my tryst with the ‘We Could be Heroes’ series. Overall, it has been a good series for me. This was the lowest rated of the five stories, so no duds as such. Definitely recommend the series to short story lovers.
Victor Methos pens this short story that mixes great legal work with a struggle to do the right thing, even as some want to mute cries for justice. Methos touches on this, which appears to be his addition to a number of short stories by a number of well-established authors in the We Could be Heroes series. I’d love to see what others say, through their own genre, but Methos did not disappoint with this piece. Short and to the point, but highly impactful.
Nick Collins has been sent to a small Utah community to help with a murder trial. The accused is said to have murdered a woman along the road and left her mutilated body. However, his story differs, in that he is said to have picked up a hitchhiker who admitted to the crime, but fled when the police were alerted during a rest stop. Now, Nick and his colleague find themselves tied in knots after trying to supply their big-city Vegas legal knowledge to this small community, and failing miserably. Nick is certain that the real killer is still out there and that his client is telling the truth, but it seems everyone has made up their minds and the trial is simply a means to go through the motions. Methos tackles this topic masterfully and has me wanting to read more!
While the story is short, Victor Methos gets his point across effectively. He pushes the views of justice over an easy legal fix and makes his arguments in a somewhat subtle fashion. The narrative works well and kept me intrigued throughout, though there is little time to ‘warm up’, as things occur in such a short timeline. Methos uses some great characters, but has little time to develop them, especially since there is a murder trial to tie up much of the writing. A few plot twists help keep things going and allow the reader to see that nothing is quite as it seems, but this is surely a piece that will keep the reader wanting to forge ahead and finish in a single sitting. Makes me want to read more in this series, as well as other Methos stories, all of which I have tried have been amazing!
Kudos, Mr. Methos, on another wonderful piece!
My Rating: 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ a bit of fun, a bit of intrigue but ultimately I was left wanting more!!
A short story in the We Could Be Heroes Amazon Original Stories series by Victor Methos a very talented author who writes legal thrillers.
This is a tale of a lawyer’s quest for a fair trial for his client who is accused of a horrendous crime. Nick Collins has vowed to uncover the truth and his big-city client doesn’t stand a chance against small-town beliefs where you are guilty until proven innocent.
This will be a quick one and I am not going to go into the story in much detail because the story really can be read in under and hour. I liked this, I alway enjoy Methos writing and his legal angle but for me it was TOO SHORT… I know normally I am up for a bite size piece of gold but there was not enough words or time to get a really good story going.
The premise is juicy and I think should have been a full length novel… the ending was rushed and it kind of just stopped. The baddie was a little weird and it again wasn’t able to be fully formed and we couldn’t get to the heart of the real issues in this town. I would have loved this to be a full length novel I would definitely have read that.
Having said that it was a nice little palette cleanser and for the most part I enjoyed it. There was some good banter between Nick and Stephanie the two Vegas lawyers…
He said, “Do you know this case didn’t even really make the new out here? I checked. There was one little blurb in the local paper and it didn’t even go into detail about it.”
“So?”
“So you don’t think it’s weird that such a gruesome murder doesn’t get any media attention?”
“Nick, we’re in the butthole of the desert. The ‘media’ out here is probably some high school kid hoping to make extra pot money off of clicks. I wouldn’t read too much into it.”
It’s a quick easy read a nice little intro into Victor Methos writing… but I will warn you his full length novels are far better and more developed so if this leave you wanting more… go and check out his other ones.
4.5 stars! I was impressed by Kill Night! The opening gave me chills. Some great writing.
There were a couple of little twisty bits in the middle but towards the end it was full of action and intense.
I know I say it in most my novella reviews but seriously, how do authors do this?! It is so clever and amazing. I also felt like I understood what was driving the characters in this and I loved that too.
Impressive Storytelling!
I just listened to a second audiobook in the "We Could Be Heroes" Amazon Original series. The author, Victor Methos, is new to me, and I found his storytelling very impressive. Although part of the story takes place in a courtroom, the most intense scenes happen in the eerie atmosphere of a small Utah town created by the author. I enjoyed the book so much that I plan on reading more of Methos' work in the future.
Entertaining mystery listening
This kindle novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account book five of five.
They are assigned to a murder case in a small town in Utah. It starts badly in court. They go to find evidence which turns worse but leads to an arrest. their client is released.
I would recommend this series and various authors to readers of short stories 😎🤗. 2024 👒😃
This final book in the We Could Be Heroes Collection (free on Prime or KU) left me feeling rather meh. It had some ideas that maybe could have been good…but it was by far too short to get anywhere with them.
An interesting legal thriller, part of the We Could Be Heroes collection. The author is new to me and I like the writing style. The opening is suspenseful but the rest of the story feels rushed. I get it, it's a short story, yet I think more could be written about the mystery and weirdness of the small town, the local authorities, and the killer.
For a novella I wasn't expecting much, however, this somehow was 60 pages of not a lot of anything? A legal thriller novella is an undertaking and this just didn't work, there needed to be a lot more to balance out the story. We went from pre-trial to ending in a few pages and it was so fast that I had to re-read the last chapter. I do think this author's novels would be worth checking out though
Smart, short story that moved quickly and efficiently. This is a mystery with a touch of flirting, but not in obvious tension areas. There was no profanity. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience.
The narrator did quite well. I felt like I was listening to an updated radio program, and that may have been because of the length. I knew it was just a tad over an hour.
Part 5 of 5 stories from the " We Could Be Heroes" collection.
Nick Collins and his colleague, Stephanie are sent by their boss to Utah to defend a man charged with murder. The accused swears he picked up a stranded man who in turn said he murdered and mutilated a woman and buried her in the desert. It is apparent that the authorities including the judge in this small town are complicit in their determination to condemn their client with contrived evidence.
Nick and Stephanie are morally determined to do the right thing. Nick especially wants to provide a substantial defense for his client but where should he start?
4.5 ⭐️
Book 5 of Amazon’s “We Could be Heroes” collection.
I have rarely liked all stories in one of these collections, but this time it was different. Great curation of stories.
Kill Night is so short and yet so intense. Of course I would’ve liked to have an entire novel about this, but the author packs a complete riveting story in such compact format.
I’ll have to check more books from this author.
While short, this one covers a lot. You really don't expect it to go where it did. I found it interesting that the 2 lawyers had different reactions to the same thing. One wanted to check out more criminal law, the other needed a break from it.
When you get the details of Ryan's case nothing make sense or even how the police are saying he is the killer. But what can you expect from a small Utah town?
Nick is sent by his boss to work this case, which turns to be his first time working any criminal case. I had my suspicions that the poor man was going to be a total disaster but surprise he didn't bow down to the corruption of that town.
Who is the real serial killer? How are they going to find new evidence or use what little they have useful to prove Ryan is innocent?
A good couple of twists but I wanted more!
Due to a personal connection to his boss, Nick Collins and his colleague Stephanie are tasked to a defend a stranger in Utah from murder charges. The accused alleges he reported a suspicious hitchhiker who disappeared after admitting he cut off a woman’s hands and buried her in the desert. The local authorities used the trace evidence to arrest him and have not investigated other options. Further, the judge regularly eats lunch with the public defenders. Despite his inexperience, Nick is determined to provide a good defense for his client.
Once you accept this legal thriller is about the characters rather than the crimes it is a rather enjoyable short story. I thought the author did very well distilling this tale into necessary scenes. It establishes a main character, sets the scene, gives a bit of intensity, adds a little bit of flair to the side characters, and feeds us a moral message about doing the right thing. Our players are likable or relatable. And by comparing the protagonist’s choices directly to those of fellow judicial officials and can show us its message rather than telling it to us. The assailant is gonzo. It won’t change your life, but it is a fun distraction.
Kill Night by Victor Methos
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4*)
This was my second short story from the collection „We Could Be Heroes“ after „Pigeon Tony's Last Stand“ which was a real banger. 🙂 So I was quite hyped for this one.
„Nick Collins vows to uncover the truth behind an accusation of murder, but as the trial progresses, the only truth he discovers is that his big-city client doesn’t stand a chance against small-town beliefs. If the accused is found guilty until proven innocent, the real killer could still be out there, and there won’t be any heroes left to catch them.“
The writing was fantastic and I also liked nearly all the protagonists. However the story was a bit simple or even boring at times… It still got the 4 stars because of the writing and because the story wasn‘t as bad, it just kinda wasn‘t original. But I also liked the court room scenes and I think I will check out this authors other works. 😁👍🏻
How can I help but like a book where the criminal defense lawyers are the good guys, the judge has at best a tenuous grasp on the canons of judicial conduct, and the action takes place in the barren desert land way outside of Vegas?
Narration was good, but word to the narrator: if you’re reading a legal thriller, you need to learn the correct pronunciation for appellate. (Hint: it’s not like a tiny apple — or APP-el-ette— it’s a-PELL-ate!)
this novelette was so good! I’m surprised it doesn’t get more hype! It was the perfect hold over until The Grave Singer comes out in April.
I’ve always been a fan of Victor Methos since I picked up A Killer’s Wife. I always think that people who have or do work in the profession of the point of view of their stories, always produce great work….for obvious reasons. Although I’ve throughly enjoyed other legal thrillers, I think Methos does a good job of building you up, leaving bread crumbs and keeping books at good lengths. They don’t feel repetitive and there’s always suspense at the perfect times.
