Welp, seeing as how we lost the Sword of Light, it’s time to find Gourry a new toy. These stories about a bona fide “sword in a stone” near Bezeld sure stunk like a scam at first, but learning that a group of assassins has their eye on it too kinda made me a believer! Now we’re in a race for the loot with a few obstacles along the way—namely a little (possibly) rich girl who won’t stop blowing us off, a mercenary couple who won’t stop stalking us, and hordes of demons who won’t stop burning towns to the ground! This mystic sword had better be worth all the trouble!
4/5 Volume 9 starts the next major Arc of Slayers, one that was never animated. Lina and Gourry are on a quest to find a new magic sword for Gourry. Since the Sword of Light was lost in volume 8.
It’s a pretty typical Slayers novel just with an all new cast. Luke and Milena are pretty fun characters and I hope they can live up to Zelgadis and Amelia from past volumes but we shall see. More sword & sorcery tom foolery to be had here as Lina once again fights demons and destroys towns.
Nothing very deep or thought provoking but that’s not really why you would dive into a Slayers story anyway. I’m continuing to have fun with the series though.
I don´t know why these books haven´t been animated, it should be because most of the original cast don´t return; but these are Slayer stories and they are centered around Lina and Gourry and they are so good that they should be.
We have two new characters here and if you have read the previous novels then make no mistake and continue reading theses novels, they are good!
Fast paced breather story after wrapping up the multi-book demon lords storyline. Lina and Gourry go on a quest for a sword, fight some minor monsters, and then ultimately square off against a giant demon. If this was ever adapted into anime, it'd be one of the 60 minute OVAs. Still fun.
Finally entering waters uncharted by most Slayers fans by digging into the back half of the novels, where Kanzaka ditches a few significant characters fans absolutely love. (Though he was writing this one as the first anime series was in production, so it wasn't out of spite or anything.) The ninth book doesn't bring the second arc to an especially thrilling start; it's mostly about establishing the new companion characters, and the villain who will presumably be taken down after a few more novels. There's a little too much place-setting for my tastes, though, and it really feels like Kanzaka doesn't know what else to do, so much of the events are padded out with battles that end up feeling very samey by the end. I'm not fully on board with this second arc quite yet, but (so far) I'm enjoying the novelty of reading Slayers material that never received any sort of adaptation.
Quick, fun read... but this time it was kind of an overused plot device: the so-called "victim" is actually the mastermind! Not much to say otherwise. I keep on thinking Gourry acts something like "the reader"... any explanations Lina makes is really for his benefit (thus, the reader).
Something momentous has occurred! The 9th novel in the series now has an official English translation! I had a lot of fun reading this installment. It handles the fall out from the first arc well and sets up the next arc strong. There are so many layers to unpack and character development to dive into that I immediately plan to read it again. And Mileena is now among my top 3 favorite characters and I look forward to further translations!
