FOOTNOTE. Is it the author who cannot make up his mind, or the character? Is there only one character speaking in the first person in this notebook, or at least two? To what degree can I make use of the indefinite number of speakers or, to resort to a conventional expression, the inconsequence of the character? I must confuse the reader; he must be confused and scared. More and more I have a feeling I could hold the whole world in my hand. A feeling that I could keep the I’s of the most disparate characters in my palm . . .When I say “it would appear” in regards to the authorship of these footnotes I am not stating this lightly; later footnotes (by another voice) call into question just who the author is in these instances – what appears to be the meta-author of the text as a whole begins to appear to possibly be just another creation; an author character still being acted upon by the meta-author, who may or may not be a part of the text itself.
