About the author

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Bourgeois graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational therapy from the University of Western Ontario in 1974. She was a psychiatric occupational therapist for three years before deciding to focus on her writing. She studied journalism at Carlton University then worked as a reporter for the Ottawa Citizen and CBC Television. She became a freelance journalist in Washington, D.C. contributing pieces to Chatelaine, Canadian Living, Reader's Digest and Maclean's. She returned to Toronto in 1983.

In 2003, she became a Member of the Order of Canada and in 2007, she received an Honourary Doctor of Laws from her alma mater, the University of Western Ontario.

Great big dollops of Franklin's trademark folksiness. Not my thing but this never hurt any two-year-old. Cabbage (or fly?) soup for the toddler soul.

The Franklin books done by Bourgeois before it got turned into a tv show, are quite good. They teach good values (blech! Did I just write that?!) without being sappy. Franklin embodies the dilemmas and worries of little ones and the ways he overcomes them. And I love the food illustrations--lots of cookies with flies on top--yum!

Franklin is a wonderful character to learn from. My kids and I have enjoyed reading each and every story that we have come across. We have committed to reading all of the books about him. Oh, the adventures we'll have!
