Where the restraints of cities and people can't hold them back. But what if not all shifters are content to just subsist side by side with humans? What if there are predators out there from time long past who consider themselves to be the top of the food chain? There may be forces at work looking to take the Shifting Sands ranch out of the picture. Can Dakota and Jax save themselves and the world from the predators? Or have they bitten off more than they can chew? Shifting Sands includes two bonus stories in the same universe, The Sound of Home, and Mother Blue's Bar and Grill. This is a new author to me, so I was going in blind. There were parts that I really enjoyed and others that I found not to my liking. The story is told from multiple POVs that include side characters and that of the villains, which I found I liked since it has made the story richer. This book does not center around one couple but gives spotlight to other shifters as well. One thing I should mention that some might find objectionable is that there is a MMF intimate scene between MCs and a female member of their fledgling pack.

Jax and Dakota meet at a ski resort for the sole purpose of letting off some steam and having good time. By the time their 2 weeks vacation is over, both men feel more deeply about each other than they should. The shifters in this story are widespread and don't know about existence of each other, so when both Dakota and Jax realize they have more in common, they choose to have a life together. Dakota is more level-headed of the two, while Jax easily flies off the handle. There are many moments when men indulge into s*ex to keep the peace and make decisions, since Jax turns to mush where Dakota is concerned. The relationship develops quickly but the story shifts between characters to focus on others and their past, so the insta love does not come off too strong.

I liked the turn the story took, when both men decided to form a pack of their own and find those who need protection and friendship since they both know how it feels not to be accepted. That part was enjoyable. The villain angle was straight-forward and very bloodthirsty, which I liked as well. The background for the how and why was well-written and explained. I liked the finale of the story, it was macabre and gory! Awesome!

Two things that really ticked me off were the lack of editing and proofreading. At one point in the book, within two pages there is an instance that a very important fact about Dakota's past is contradicted. I reread it many times to be sure, but, yes it didn't make sense. Other wise, the story was good. I enjoyed this new pack and hope the next book will be as enjoyable. Copy received for my honest and unbiased review

I found the blurb interesting - shifters, a shifter ranch safe place and apex predators. The predator was a T-Rex shifter. A very, very bad predator. I liked the premise of the story. I found Dakota, bear shifter and Jax, wolf shifter funny, snarky, sweet and downright adorable. However, I didn't like the whole story. There were parts that got too fluffy, sticky sweet that I didn't enjoy and a m/f scene that just made me shake my head. So while this has 3 stars I would probably say 3.5 stars and I will be reading the next book.

Shifting Sands is a shifter story full of a wide range of shifter animals. The story of two male shifter who previously believed they were the only ones finding each other and creating a safe have a for other shifters who were alone in the world. The villain of this story is a predator shifter that wants to take over the world and Dakota and Jax's small farm haven't puts a detour in that plan.

"It was simple, Dakota decided. He was addicted to Jax."

I liked the relationship between Dakota and Jax's and I really loved Ghost but the story as a whole seemed to drag a little. In my opinion the sex scenes where a bit excessive, I mean the first 18% was basically all sex and then from there we were given an actual story line. No worries though there continues to be constantly sex of some form throughout. I think that was a big reason for me why this didn't get a higher rating but I am looking forward to continuing the series.

When Dakota meets Jax the chemistry between them is explosive. Together they find out the truth about each other and realise they are not the only ones. Together they buy a ranch where they can be themselves and Shifting Sands is born.
Slowly their pack grows.
I loved how Dakota and Jax were with each other, so funny and sassy. Diedre's labour was hilarious as Jax and Dakota help her.
I read this book in one sitting, I enjoyed it that much. It was laugh out loud funny but also has serious undertones.
A story with a great family vibe, about love, family, safety with humour throughout.

***Possible Spoilers***
I like a good shifter book. Shifting Sands is a good shifter book. There is sufficient sex between these pages that it could be labeled as erotica, and I mean there is a lot. Jax and Dakota are all about it, and then some, and the other couples featured are almost as randy. Whew! That’s a lot of sexy times. lol
Shifting Sands is a different take on shifters; at least it is to me. They live a normal human lifespan, get hurt but don't immediately heal, and the Alpha isn't always the top dog in the yard. The give and take between Dakota and Jax is interesting to watch. They each have strengths and weaknesses, and neither calls the other out on them. Their relationship is loving and strong.
I was thrown off a bit by Jax and Dakota’s HEA coming so early on in the book. I'm not used to it coming before the last ¾ of the book. That's ok, though. They needed to be settled into their commitment to each other for the rest of the shifters to have a safe place to live. I liked meeting all of the new shifters. Some species I would not expect to enjoy reading about, but this author makes them exciting and an essential part of the story. Plus, there is more than one romance to enjoy within these pages. I was able to see firsthand, due to multiple POVs, the backstories for these additional characters, their journey to the Shifting Sands ranch, and the moment they meet their mate. I'm not used to seeing multiple couples sharing their thoughts and actions with me, but this works. Their HEA is as satisfying as Jax and Dakota’s. The author makes you care for all of these “misfits” by giving insight into the hearts and minds of a few.
The villain of the piece is powerfully sinister. Not by deviousness, but by the violence he fosters in those around him and in the uncontrollable anger he rides like a coaster in a theme park. His temper goes up and down, but the result is almost always the same: sheer carnage.
Some editing issues were a bit distracting, and the multiple POV got confusing a couple of times, but on the whole, I like this book. I love how the author approached it, and I look forward to book 2.
BTW, there is bonus content at the end of the book. Interesting stuff.

This book is really interesting. Two shifters that were convinced to be one of a kind discover that they're not as unique as they thought. Dakota and Jax meet at ski resort and they spend two weeks burning the sheets together. I mean full blown intense sexual connection, which neither of them expected to turn into something more serious, because they have special sides of themselves they're scared to reveal to one another. And isn't wonderful to find out that shared the same secret and that they're not as alone as they thought all of their lives?

So,Dakota and Jax decide to buy a ranch together, a place where they could live freely, and The Shifting Sands is born. But Dakota wants to find others like them, give them a safe haven, and that's how a place for two becomes a home to many.
Their small pack will soon be formed by  six adult shifters and eventually even two babies. But there's also The Ultimate Predators and their leader Cain who is set to find  and kill them all...thrilling, right?

As I already said, Shifting Sands is a very interesting book. Jax and Dakota's interactions kept me entertained throughout the story, because when they're not hot for each other they can't stop bickering. Also, the authors offers MPV and of course that helps in connecting with the other characters.
Not to mention the existence of a violent, bloodthirsty enemy ...wanting to know how that ended really kept me glued to the pages.

It's the first book of the In Their Own Skin series and can't wait to read the others.

"Shifting Sands" is the first volume of "In Their Own Skins" series written by Kiernan Kelly. I admit that when I started reading this novel I didn't expect to get what I actually got. The story presented in "Shifting Sands" turned out to be far more crazy than I could have expected. But first things first. Let's start with the universe of the series. While the shapeshifters whose second form corresponds to the animals that still exist in our world are nothing new (however, they are my great weakness), the extinct species are an entirely different matter. Dinosaurs?! Seriously? At first I wasn't convinced this was the best idea. And yet Kiernan Kelly did a great job presenting it. First of all, the fact that in this novel we have a shapeshifter with such an unusual form is extremely unconventional. What's more, it makes sense, because the idea is supported by an appropriate construction of the world. Thus, at the end of the day, the author really proved that this idea was a good one, and with time I even liked it.

I admit that I was impressed by the way Kiernan Kelly decided to present her universe, because to some extent to the characters themselves the supernatural part of their world is a mystery. The idea of shapeshifters who mostly don't know about other people like themselves is quite uncommon. Moreover, we can say that they use themselves as the guinea pigs to discover their skills, talents, differences and similarities between them. I find it really interesting. The more so because as the characters discover some of the rules they and people like them are subject to, the readers also learn about it all at the same pace. In this case my only problem was the dynamics between some characters. Discovering yourself and people like yourself, as well as understanding the problems and needs resulting from belonging to a given species, doesn't require sexual intercourse, which seems to disagree with the whole mating idea, right? Fortunately, there is only one situation like that in the book, so we can turn a blind eye to it.

Another thing that I love in "Shifting Sands" is the idea of having your place in the world, in a very literal sense, and becoming independent, which gives you the opportunity to simply be yourself and give similar freedom to others. I admit that I liked the idea so much that I was surprised by it myself. I didn't expect such power and vigor with which the characters approach this task. What's more, the mentioned idea turns out to have quite a significance for the further development of the story, which is also a big advantage of the novel. It is also worth mentioning that the theme of self-sufficient farm living has irresistible charm and a kind of magic that attract the readers and make the novel closer to them. It starts to feel more like home. They are no longer just some observers, because they become part of the family.

In summary, "Shifting Sands" is a really interesting and unconventional novel, which, although not without flaws, engrosses the readers and encourages them to explore the story presented here, as well as to reach for the other volumes of the series. I think it is a pretty good start of a bigger project that is really worth reading.

Opis

„Shifting Sands” jest pierwszym tomem serii „In Their Own Skins” autorstwa Kiernan Kelly. Dinozaury?! Serio?

Shifting Sands is the first book in In Their Own Skin series by Kiernan Kelly. This story was interesting and not like alot of the shifter stories I've read. The shifters we meet here have no clue they are not the only ones, they have been living solitary lives, afraid their secret would be revealed. Only now are they starting to gather together thanks to Dakota and Jax setting up the ranch and welcoming the shifters they happen to find. But unfortunately there is a danger, an enemy with disturbing methods of getting rid of anyone who doesnt bow down to his will. This story whet my appetite for more and I am excited to read more.

The story has action and drama, a touch of humor, romance and a lot of hot sexy moments between hot men (and one that involved a female in heat with the two male characters). We get treated to several POVs in the story which really helped understand those characters and why they were who they were. The characters were interesting and kinda fun to get to know. Overall, enjoyable story.
Shifting Sands includes two bonus stories written in the same universe. The bonus stories are Sound of Home and Mother Blue's Bar and Grill. These were also pretty interesting treats to read

☆☆☆☆I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

This is a new author to me & I was pleasantly surprised at how well this interesting & enjoyable MM/MMF shifter romance was written. The story-line & plot is well-written & interesting with some exciting events. The characters are likable & well developed with unique personalities, there is good support from the secondary characters.
There is: a bear shifter (Dakota) with an appetite for drinks & hot men comes into contact with a arrogant wolf shifter (Jax) & the attractions flare, various kinds of shifters, a predator pack (Ultimate Predators), a safe haven (Shifting Sands Ranch), twist & turns, intrigue, suspense, action, secrets, danger, threats, enemies, naturally a villainous leader (Cain), devious plans, conflict, violence, cults, experiments, attractions, surprises, bonding, memories, coercion, manipulations, disclosure, contentment, verbal banter, steamy scenes & a very interesting conclusion. There are two quick-read bonus MM romances included in this book. I enjoyed reading this shifter romance & look forward to the next book in this series with great anticipation.

3.5* a good plot.

I struggled with this book, there seemed to be a lot of mistakes and I had to re-read passages again to make sure it made sense, which in some cases it did not. However the idea behind the story/plot was really interesting, shifters that are so separated that they feel, they are the only ones. I liked the fact that the story is told by a number of POV’s and not just the MC’s, the range of characters is great, I really liked Jax’s feisty-ness and Dakota’s level headed-ness which means they balance each other out.
I will try and continue with the series as I am intrigued as to where the story will go.

So I have decided 4* for plot and 3* for execution = overall 3.5* from me.

his was a very interesting book from beginning to finish.

I loved Jax and Dakota. Jax is pure alpha, and Dakota is sweet and so upbeat and kind. They feed of each others differences and it makes them strong together.

I loved the different surrounding characters, the variety in the shifter species we encounter along the book and the relationships that develop around the main one.

The world setting was interesting and I am looking forward to the next book

I enjoyed this book. I never read a shifter book where the characters did know about other shifters or where was a dinosaur shifter and I loved those aspects. Jax and Dakota were truly different. It was interesting to watch their love grow and the power play between them. Cain was a pure psycho and I was glad that they ended him. Also a shifter with two different forms was crazy awesome. I've never read anything like this and I loved it

This is a new to me author and I have to say I’m intrigued to see where they take this. With multiple characters and shifters told in several view points, you can’t help getting hooked. It ends in a HFN but you know there will be more. I can’t wait to see how it plays out. Im so glad I got a copy to review from LesCourt. I would have missed getting to know the author’s work.

Interesting take on shifters! I was a bit confused by the two main characters getting a "HEA" within the first chapter or two but I suppose that was to show their relationship as "established". Looking forward to seeing where this series will go.

This author has taken the same old stale shifter storyline, shaken it up, blew it out of the water, turned it inside out and upside down, then gave it a fresh and definitely different spin. It had me hooked from the very first page, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Lions, Tigers, and Bears ~ oh my. In “Shifting Sands,” Kelly creates a world of incredible imagination in which shape shifters of your wildest dreams lurk. Think of the most outrageous animal a person could become and then read this book; Kelly will likely exceed your expectations. Lions, tigers and bears are just the tip of the shape shifter iceberg in this interesting, humorous, and engaging story. Be sure to put aside the technical questions while reading this, it’s a fun trip down the rabbit hole.

Dakota is a bear with an appetite. He’s headed off to a ski lodge for a vacation that involves hot drinks, hot men and no snow. While he’s there he meets Jax, a wolf with an attitude. From the first encounter, Jax and Dakota heat both themselves and the pages with undeniable chemistry and attraction. Not quite polar opposites in terms of personality, they seamlessly connect without questioning how and why it happened. During their last night together, drunk and emotional, Jax and Dakota both shape shift to reveal their animal forms. Recognizing kindred souls, they decide this is more than a weeklong fling.

Armed with their newfound relationship, the duo decides to buy an isolated ranch in Wyoming, but upon arrival, they find they have underestimated the amount of work to be done. Ever resourceful, Dakota rationalizes that if he and Jax can shift, others must be able to as well and perhaps feel just as lonely and isolated. Thus begins a somewhat screwball journey to enlarge their pack with lost and lonely shape shifters of any and every kind. The ensemble cast grows to include wolves, bears, eagles, dragons, tigers, lions, panthers, and even perhaps a rhino. However, no makeshift family is complete without an archenemy in the form of predators, led by the ultimate predator himself, a shape shifting T-Rex named Cain.

Although the premise is comical with outrageous shifters, Kelly has masterfully kept the story from being an utter farce with skillful writing and creative and likable characters with enough tension to keep the reader’s interest without tripping over that slippery slope of ridiculous. Dakota and Jax are well drawn with their complimentary personalities and alternating alpha tendencies. Dakota especially, relying on his easygoing demeanor, truly runs the pack with his skillful handling of Jax’s more uptight and anxious personality. While Jax is the acknowledged alpha male of the pack, he often reveals a soft heart beneath the prickly attitude. The supporting characters are given just enough life to add depth to the pack dynamic without taking the attention and focus away from the main characters.

The arch enemy pack, the Ultimate Predators, led by the scene stealing Cain, was a good foil to the natural good deeds of the Shifting Sands Ranch group. Cain comes across as a little too evil and a little too stereotypical but he certainly grabs the attention of any scene. There are some inconsistencies within the pack, such as Cain’s disdain for technology, yet he uses it in various ways to track people, and the tale of Cain’s past was over the top for me and slid away from the strength of Kelly’s writing. However, it does set up the sequel nicely and the clash between packs kept the gore to a minimum.

This was a very enjoyable, funny, and well-written story filled with an ensemble of quirky characters following their equally humorous and prickly leaders. Kelly’s imagination is wonderful and her writing is deft enough to keep the story within the bounds of a great read, while navigating the potential outrageous moments. There were some missteps, but they don’t detract from the story at all. If you’re uncertain if you’ll like the story, read the prologue. It’s truly one of the best scenes of the book. Overall, Kelly has delivered a fun, creative and imaginative world with engaging characters that will have you laughing and waiting for the next outrageous shifter to show up.

Alright, at first I liked the book.

I have been reading Kiernan's work with a bit of a hope that things will get better as they go along 'cause it is obvious that there is potential with this writer.

The story is a neat interpretation of the "shifter" genre; one I actually can tolerate. And I actually kinda liked it until the second part of the story...

... where Sebastien comes in.

It is obvious Kiernan doesn't research a whole heck of a lot and goes with what she has experienced and/or knows. With that in mind, it is probably the reason why I am not a writer; I am loathe to be so ignorant.

Here is my review for this book:

Pet Peeve: American writers who add in Canadian characters and have NO idea what they're doing by making the character a total stereotype!

Yeah, a Frenchman from Manitoba (seriously... are there any francophones west of Ontario other than the odd transplant?) named Sebastien Orignaux (ROFLMAO) who is best friends with "Pierre" again, from Manitoba. Sebastien is a snobby vegetarian wine drinker (author doesn't say where in Manitoba you can find one of these). He demands "potage" out in Wyoming, not soup 'cause just about any non-ignorant French-Canadian would actually say "soup" when in an anglo environment or the typically franglais "soupe" ("soup" with a french accent on it LOL).

There's a HUGE difference between French-Canadian and Parisian French. Think of your francophones from Vermont or Maine. They are hoity toity escargot and frog leg eatin' gourmets.

Oh, and should I just add in (and I had to reread this multiple times) "disparaissent la baisse vous-meme, Monsieur" as the French equivalent to "kindly go fuck yourself". Maybe in google translate or some other French/English translator...

The internet is an amazing thing! If you are going to add in a character from a geographic area to which you are entirely ignorant- FIND SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP YOU!

A good how-to with French Canada is to watch Bon Cop Bad Cop. It is hilarious. For your convenience, I'm attaching a YouTube clip from the movie particularly centered around swearing (which, by the way, French swears are religious and not sexual like English cussing). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUGW0j...

I could not finish the book despite getting to page 147 of 158. I could not read one more word from Sebastien and will not be able to continue reading anything else from the series.

This was a very interesting book. It had a bit of an unusual shifter twist It was a good set-up to the later books in the series, and I loved the main characters. I can’t really put my finger on what exactly I loved so much. They appealed to me for some reason or other, and I felt connected with them and invested in their futures. And yes, I yelled at them and gave them advice, even though they couldn’t hear me. I can’t wait to see what comes next

Two shifters find each other and start up a ranch where they welcome other shifters they find. Lurking in the everglades, is an ancient threat, a shifter preparing to take control and force humanity from pole position on the food chain.

I really wanted to like this. I love Kiernan Kelly's short stories but find I quickly lose interest in the novellas. I just can't get into them or care about the story or character. Which is a shame, because there are several original twists to this tale.
