Rachel Lee is a pretty good author, and I've read a lot of her stuff. This was the worst thing by her that I've ever read. If you want to try her stuff, begin with the Conard County stories.

On the good side, I liked the secondary characters and the heroine.

The plot hinged on a twist that I guessed three chapters before the heroine did. The hero suspected it, and didn't share his intuition with his partner (her).

Our hero is a man from an abusive past who demonstrates few social skills and no ability to work with a partner or share his clues in an investigation. So how did he thrive in the military, return to attend college, and how in the heck did he advance through the police department ranks to make detective?

The heroine comes from a priveleged background. Why is she working as a law officer? How did she make detective after only two years?

Why do the two of them break every rule in the book and become physically involved? How does the misogynist suddenly see the light and understand his own motivations and make a complete turnaround?

If I'd been reading the Montana Mavericks series, I might have liked the references to characters featured in other stories. It seemed a bit contrived and distracting when the editors seem to have forced Lee to put them in the story as nonsequiters.

The epilogue seemed especially artificial, mentioning characters who are missing entirely from the book up to this point.

I once watched every movie Walter Matthau ever made because my husband liked his better ones and wanted more. Well, there were some real stinkers among them. That's not true of Nora Roberts' books, but it seems to be true of this one by Rachel Lee.

Back out to the swap it goes.
