Out of her bitterness, there came a plan...

Twelve years ago Lori's father had been destroyed by the ruthless lawyer Jacob R. Randell in a notorious embezzlement trial. Ruined, overcome with shame, her father had killed himself, protesting his innocence to the end.

The trial had haunted them for years: Lori's mother finally wasted away with grief, and Lori, seeking to rebuild her life, was coldly jilted by her fiance when he discovered her true identity.

She had reason to hate the Randell family. And when she met Jacob's son, Luke, she saw a way to hurt him as his father had hurt her.

Smitten hero says to the heroine on their first meeting "I'm smitten." And it just gets better from there as the he pursues and the heroine tires to work through her bitter feelings about men after being jilted five years before. That the hero's father was inadvertently a cause for the heroine's jilting becomes clearer, the heroine latches on a vague notion of revenge. She'll jilt the hero at some point and . . .winning? It's not very clear.

Unfortunately for the heroine, she does fall in love with the hero and her revenge plan backfires. But being an intrepid heroine, she faces her demons (in the form of the hero's father) and the past and the truth eventually sets everyone free.

There were some good cameos of side characters. I enjoyed the elderly aunt with the plant mania that the heroine visits a few times a month. The ex-fiance puts in an appearance and he is satisfyingly slimy. The heroine's roommate finally saw through her cheating boyfriend.

The hero directness was a nice contrast to the heroine's defensiveness. The final scene between the two was really sweet. The hero seemed to understand how much she had gone through, even though she had been in the wrong.

This novel just left me emotionally distraught. I mean reading it was amazing and how everything just flowed. I felt so saddened for the heroine. She was constantly losing the people she loved and when he hero didn't believe she loved him, oh my heart just about broke. Definitely a great read!

"Subtle Revenge" is the story Lori and Luke.

Crazy feels for this hero!!

Plot: Our h has a life filled with tragedy. Her father committed suicide after he underwent a harrowing trial, headed by the notorious lawyer, Jacob P. Randell. Her mother died soon after, and her callous fiance dumped her. Since then she's changed her name and works quietly in a famous law firm. While attending her roommates wedding, she bumps into Luke, our hero, who is instantly smitten with her. He chases her, and declares on their first meeting that she would be his bride. But soon Lori realizes Luke is the son to Jacob, the man who destroyed her life, and a subtle revenge plan begins to form.

Conflict: The heroine then plays hot and cold with the hero. She hates all that he stands for, yet as soon as he stops chasing her she tries to attract his attention. Her goal is to marry him and then declare her true identity, making him and his father realize what they wed into! She also used OM to push him away, yet when potential OW show up she gets really jealous. The roommates and boss provide the much needed background drama.

Resolution: The heroine soon realizes that the hero is innocent of the sins of his father, and that he genuinely loves her. Revenge had been clouding her mind, but once she starts letting it go, she realizes her growing tender feelings for him. They reach their conclusion with the help of her straight talking aunt, his father, her shitty ex and finally the truth of what transpired.

Angst: Minimal

Sex: Non descriptive but hot

Highlight: Definitely has to be the OTT smitten hero. He was CRAZY behind the heroine and confessed his love for her early on. He was also super jealous of all potential OM, only gave up when he realized she might have been faking her feelings, but once she confesses the truth and apologizes, he is quick to take her back. The heroine was strong, vengeful and passionate once the mask came off.

Enjoyed it!

This is the second time i read about a heroine possessed by revenge towards the hero, after "A past Revenge" by the same author,"Subtle Revenge" has the same hot elements of revenge.

This time..it is the Hero, the irresistible Luke Randell that falls head over heels in love with the heroine at the first sight and even OFFERS MARRIAGE at their first encounter on a wedding.
Disgusted, the beautiful and cold Heroine Lori Parker rejects him.

But knowing soon that he is the son of her enemy she soon craves revenge, and using Luke the way to get it.

I actually love all Mortimer`s heroes. They are true Alpha-men that i wish for myself and Luke...oh Luke!!!!!His love just blew me away.He was both adorable and frightening at the same time and Lori, well i knew that she would eventuelly fall for him,and i was so happy when she realized it!

Read this in 2015 first time read it again this year was just a good as the first time maybe even better? You know a book is really good when you think it's better second time round!

Sizzling chemistry between Lori and Luke. He knew she was the one the first time he set his eye son her and she disliked him on sight for his arrogance but when she found out he was the son of the man who ruined her life she hated him even more. Luke reminded her of all the memories of the past, memories of pain and rejection and when Lori set out to get revenge on him things then really took a turn...

Although Luke was not my cruel, abusive dream hero, he was arrogant and obsessive enough so I liked him a lot. It was nice story and it was a nice change in this case, herone was revengful instead of hero.

The second book I read with the heroine revenge plot in the past week.

He was a goner with the first look. She was still in love with her ex-fiance who dropped her like the week old trash few days before their wedding after he found out who her father was. She wasn't looking for a revenge for her father or her mother but for her broken engagement to a schmuck. The Jerk aka the ex-fiance made an appearance in the late chapters and he was a good for nothing son of a bitch.

I was ready to hate his father but at the end he was the one I had the most respect for... he lost so much by keeping a secret.

I was taken by surprise when the aunt disclosed the truth.

Carole Mortimer is an old time favourite and if my local lending library had it, I’ve read it.
This is a reread.

Age gap between the MC’s is more than 10 years ( approximately 14-15 years)
Like most of the books of this time, the story is told in the Heroine’s POV only.
It has a very uncommon story line -
The Hero is in active pursuit of the Heroine from the beginning and the Heroine out for revenge.

I’ve always wondered at the imagery about emotions that are portrayed by the eyes which are described in the book and well written descriptions never fails to capture my attention.

“ Ice grey eyes searched enigmatic brown eyes.”

And with this sentence, my interest was diverted from the story line to happily anticipating all descriptions I was going to read about eyes. And I wasn’t disappointed.
In this book there are around 196 references to eyes!!!!........ 😅😅
and most of them are of the Hero and Heroine.

Heroine’s eyes
Her eyes were a deep rich brown.
Her brown eyes seemed to have a golden ring around them, giving them a curiously cat-like appearance.
Her eyes sparkled like a cat.
Her eyes were the colour of honey 🍯 in the sunlight.
She viewed her tormentor with angry eyes, the gold around the iris seeming to make them glow.
At first her eyes appeared brown, but the gold circles made them change colour with her mood.
Shocked eyes.
Her eyes spat her hatred of him.
The strain was visible in her eyes.
Her eyes glittered her hatred.
Her make-up emphasised the liquid seduction of her deep brown eyes.
Her pleading eyes were softly encouraging.
Her eyes glowed with a recklessness.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
Her eyes filled with a forced longing.
Her eyes were a puzzled golden brown.
Her eyes were guarded.
Her eyes were demure.

Hero’s eyes
He was a tall dark man with piercing grey eyes.
Hard grey eyes.
Serious grey eyes.
Mocking light eyes.
Shrewd grey eyes.
Quizzical grey eyes.
His curiously light grey eyes were all seeing.
The coldness was gone from his eyes.
He had an enigmatic expression in his eyes.
The promise of intimacy in his devilish grey eyes.
Those steely grey eyes contained a strange mixture of warmth and cruelty.
Determined glitter in his steely grey eyes.
The challenge in the light-coloured eyes.
An angry glitter in the grey of his eyes.
The mockery in the clear grey depth of his eyes.
His eyes were devouring her.
His eyes narrowed appreciatively, a dark smoky grey.
Sensuality burning in his eyes.
His eyes gleamed down at her in open admiration.
Anger flared briefly in his icy grey eyes.
Puzzlement flickered in and out of his eyes.
Triumph flared in the depth of his eyes.
Desire blazed in the light grey eyes like a molten fire.
Intense silver-grey eyes.
Determined glitter in the steely grey eyes
The warm grey of his eyes.
Mockery in the clear grey depths of his eyes.
Disgust flashed briefly in his eyes.
Amusement glittered in the grey eyes.

Special mention must be made of the fact that there are descriptions of the emotions in the eyes of many other characters eyes -
Heroine’s friend - Tears filled her deep blue eyes, they shone with happiness.
Heroine’s boss - His eyes twinkled at her.
Heroine’s Aunt -Faded Blue eyes, affectionate twinkle in her light blue eyes
Heroine’s ex fiancee - She had imagined the warmth of his eyes.
Potential Other Man - He gazed down at her with admiring eyes, laughing blue eyes.
Potential Other woman - Her eyes were hard, like hard blue pebbles
Heroine’s ex-fiancee’s sister - Her blue eyes were full of sparkling humour. Her eyes were coolly appraising.
Hero’s father - The piercing eyes that had once seemed to see into a person’s very soul now dulled with age.

And after a small interference caused by the Heroine’s ex-fiancée, all ends well.
No epilogue.

Good revenge book.
CM’s heroines are often the cruel and vengeful ones against the heroes.
This is one of those.
The hero’s father was a lawyer who 10 years before, prosecuted the heroine’s father for embezzlement.
The heroine’s father committed suicide.
10 years later the h meets the lawyer son and thinks it would be a good revenge to have H fall in love with her and even marry him.
Poor hero is the innocent part: he’s so besotted with h since their first meeting that he immediately declares his desire to marry her.
The plan goes on until of course the heroine realizes he’s completely innocent and he can’t stand his father for his ruthless methods, and at this point she’s in love with him and knows that as soon as he knows who she is, he will leave her.
We have:
Two bitchy wannabe ow
A sob ex boyfriend
A wannabe om
The truth comes out and the hero leaves the heroine.
But of course he’s so in love with her that as soon as he sees her again he’s so ready to forgive her and to have her back that she can’t even apologize properly.
So we have for once a heroine who is cruel and vengeful and a H who is innocent, victimized by the heroine and very much in love with her.
I love when the heroine is mean and vengeful with a reason, and doesn’t relent, but here the hero was really innocent and hated his father to the point he went to live in another country, so I found annoying her behavior, especially since she seems to be still very much involved with her ex fiancé, a man who left her at the altar when he found out what her father did.
It’s for him that she decides to make the hero fall in love with her, and that man was really a coward and a vile, but she didn’t understand it until it was too late.
Pity.
Anyway it was an enjoyable reading.

This is one of the better ones by CM and the hero is hot pursuit of the heroine Lori. Who is trying at first to stay away from him because he did was responsible for her fathers death. It was a little nuts how much he was in instant love lust with Lori. He just wants her and is willing to put himself out until the almost end where he discovers it's been and an act. What happens when the act becomes real? Read it and found out.

Meh. All of this back and forth for nothing. I’ve read better from CM

Lori has been living in anguish for many years. A broken engagement to a man she loved and tragedy after tragedy in her own family. She works as a secretary in a high profile law firm. With her boss retiring, the new boss is the H who is hot on Lori from minute 1. He calls her ‘kitten’ (slight cringe) and tells her that she’s his future bride.

There’s another man not viable to be called other man. But he certainly has a thing for Lori and she doesn’t care. There are several interactions between friends and their weddings and their parents. I could care less for those.

Luke the H is persistent and won’t take no for answer. Luke is also indirectly responsible for causing Lori’s ex fiancé to break their engagement and Lori’s in for revenge except she also falls for him eventually.

Luke was lukewarm at best. He was also quite a lot older than Lori and their relationship seemed to be imposed by the writer. I didn’t feel any fireworks or chemistry. I can only imagine what a boring marriage they would’ve had.

There’s a half scene of Lori speaking up to clear out all the misinformation fed to Luke. They reconcile within seconds. A one time read.

Can I give this book more than 5 stars? In my opinion this is a HP masterpiece.

Anyway, it has the things I like in a HP: a revenge trope, a very smitten and very determined H and a nice h who is not irrational and who does not give in to him easily. A H who is experienced but not a manwhore and a virgin h. He is an alpha male, but not cruel. Wonderful.

The h plans for revenge, but I can understand her reasoning behind it. Her dad committed suicide, her mum just gave up and her fiancé dumping her because of what her dad did. That’s traumatic for anyone.

As a little girl her parents really didn’t do her a favour thinking more about themselves than about their daughter. There’s a poem called ‘This be the verse’ from Philip Larkin. I had to think about that poem reading this book. The poem starts with:

“They f*ck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do (…)”

And that’s exactly what her parents did to her as a little girl.

The way the H loves her, the way he is head over heels from the moment he sees her, the way he doesn’t make a secret of his feelings, the way she can make or break his mood, his jealousy towards other men, his passion, his love, his determination, his caring, him wanting to be wherever she is, etc. I think we all want to be loved like that.

I can say this book was perfect- because it was! Its not everyday I read something with such a strong and independent heroine, and so confident too- I was in heaven! The hero was exactly how I like my heroes- self assured, confident, successful and a non quitter, goes after what he wants no matter the obstacle! They were a perfect match- I wish all books I read were this emotionally satisfying!

Look at the '80s fabulous-ness of that cover!

I was a baby when this old school Harlequin was published, but I still found it very entertaining.

It was so nice to have a vintage HP where the hero let the heroine know in their first conversation that he was going to marry her. There were never any misunderstandings about the hero's feelings.

Unfortunately, the heroine blamed the hero's father for the death of both her father and mother.

So, she was feeling a little vindictive.

I love a story where the H is insanely obsessed with the h and does all the chasing. The h was great bc she knew how to play him. Finally, a h that doesn't fall easily for the H and makes him work for it. There was another man interested in her and she didn't spend her nights at home pining for the H.

This could have been a good story, except that, because of the short length of Harlequins, there's not enough time for character development, so things move too fast. In a book where the author's free to write hundreds of pages, you can take the premise of this story and let it play out in its own time.

The h, Lori, has been bitter for years over her father's suicide in prison, being convicted of embezzlement, though Lori never doubted his innocence. the prosecuting attorney, Jacob Randall, was ruthless in getting the conviction, and it's haunted Lori for 12 years, ever since she was that age.

Now 22, when she discovers her new boss is Luke Randall, Jacob's son, she decides to get revenge through him. She'll take advantage of his obvious attraction to her, make him fall in love, and then...

The trouble is, because of the apparent Harlequin rule of less than 200 pages, the change in her feelings has to be rushed, so it happens almost overnight. One minute it's "I hate him and now I'll make a fool of him", the next it's "I love him and how can I live without him?" Too much too soon, and that goes triple for the desperate sex-in-the-shower scene, where she loses her virginity (handy to wash the blood away), because she knows how he'll feel when the truth is revealed, and she just had to make love to him before it was too late!!

Even more ridiculous, is the deluge of deception going on: Luke's father kept secrets from Luke, Lori's late mother kept secrets from Lori, Lori's elderly aunt was also hiding something, not to mention the giant deception involving Lori's dead father! ENOUGH!!!! Wasn't there an old TV show called "I've Got a Secret"? They should have all been on it!

If the story hadn't been so exaggerated, and didn't have to be told in a hurry, it could have gotten another star.
