The final New Adventure is an uncharacteristically shoddy piece of work: a workmanlike action plot full of poor quips and repetitive prose that does nothing good for the characters you’ve invested in across 23 novels, not including the Doctor Who ones. It does at least work in the pre-emptive series ending of Tears Of The Oracle and then build on it, but the final reckoning that follows in no way earns the happy ending post-script that tries sending the New Adventures away on a bittersweet note. It’s dreadful; duck out after Tears Of The Oracle and save yourself.

Il problema riguardante Dellah non può più essere ignorato. Il completo isolamento del pianeta ha impedito agli Dei e alle varie sette di diffondersi in altri sistemi, ma il numero sempre più ridotto di fedeli porta a delle guerre intestine tra le divinità per accaparrarsi i seguaci rimasti, e non ci vorrà molto prima che decidano di portare queste guerre su altri pianeti.
Il Popolo e i Signori del Tempo, rintanati nei loro rifugi, programmano di “sterilizzare” quel settore della galassia, senza tenere conto del numero incalcolabile di vite che andrebbero perse.
Bernice, Braxiatel e gli altri non possono permettere che accada, e il loro piano è quello di spedire l’intero pianeta di Dellah nell’universo da cui provengono gli Dei e in cui non avranno alcun potere.
Mentre Bernice e Jason si occupano della missione principale, Chris e Clarence devono recuperare un diplomatico. Le cose, come al solito, sono più complicate di come si pensa. Solo che questa volta non tutti potrebbero tornare a casa…

Siamo giunti alla chiusura dei conti, finalmente la storyline riguardante gli Dei di Dellah giunge al termine. La storia è carica di azione e lascia con il fiato sospeso e la rivelazione di cosa sono veramente questi Dei nel loro universo madre è intrigante. Ci sono dei momenti toccanti tra Benny e Jason, tuttavia manca un po’ di pathos nei momenti più tragici (in cui non ho nemmeno pianto, e io piango per qualsiasi cosa. Davvero, qualsiasi).
Un ottimo libro e un finale appropriato, senz’altro, ma sulla scia di Where Angels Fears mi aspettavo qualcosa di più.

This is the very last of the Bernice Summerfield Virgin New Adventures, closing a series of 23 novels which I think is the longest sequence for any one companion (there are only 19 Torchwood books). It's decent enough but not great; it winds up the Gods storyline established earlier in the sequence, without really tying much into the books in between. Benny, Jason and Irving Braxiatel get some good moments, and there is a crazed cult bent on human sacrifice. The series doesn't really end with a bang, but it's not a whimper either.
