I don't read a lot of fantasy, but this book caught my attention. Partly because of how passionate the author comes across, which I have a ton of respect for and would have sealed the deal for me buying the book if the blurb had failed (which it didn't.)

Three stars looks like a terribly low rating, especially since most of the reviewers before me have given the book 5 stars - but on goodreads 3 stars is supposed to mean 'I liked it' - and I did. I didn't fall in love with it, but I'm happy to have read it.

Kiameron is the (almost annoyingly) reluctant crown prince of DiNolfol. Instant props for both those names. Fairly early on in the book he becomes aware that he is the heir to something even more important, and that he is the most powerful weapon the nation has against the evil Gava. If anything, Kiameron is even more reluctant about this.

I did quite like Kiameron. I understood his reluctance to be king, and his frustrations with his powers. I liked that his friends were all in the lower classes. He had a small rebellious streak that I admired too. But instead of growing throughout the book, he spent a lot of the time moaning. To be fair, a lot of loved ones of his were dying and he was thrown into the role of 'hero' - but I was kind of counting on him to appreciate that people were giving their lives for the cause, and at least to try to get stuck in and work on his powers and be a bit less of a follower. He did surprise me at the end, and I feel like he did kind of become heroic then, but that was after 500-plus pages of a lack of enthusiasm, so it was a bit late for me.

Kai's biggest problem, in my opinion, was Cy. Cy was awesome. Cy was everything the main character should be. He was witty, damaged, confused, smart, passionate and cool. If the book was being rated on Cy, it would be a clear 5 stars. He eclipsed Kai in every scene they shared, and I found myself rooting for Cy very early on. I couldn't praise that character enough.

The other character worth praise is Gava, the bad guy. Cy and Gava's scenes together were nail biting, clever, and sinister. I believed in Gava, and I liked how he set out his stall. He knew what he was doing, and I believed Cy's fear, and later Kai's fear of him. He was a very strong villain. I loved reading his parts. Riveting.

Most of the other characters were good. There were a few I liked a lot, but others I didn't concentrate on. I skipped through every bit with Ason in it. I just didn't care about the details with him. I would still struggle to tell you the differences between Ronar and Ronake. But Maleki, Grondi, Jurgon, Erram, Fodongo and Tafoya (amongst others) were all very distinct and strong characters.

The general plot and storyline was brilliant. It's a long book, and I found myself reading till 4am one of the three nights I read it on, trying to race ahead. I did find that some of the journeying elements felt drawn out, and the showdown with Gava went far too fast for me. I was reading, and reading, enjoying the build up, skipping the Ason bits to get back to the main story, seeing Cy and Kai size eachother up, seeing Gava's strength mount - and what I was really hoping for was a face-off between Cy and Gava and Kai and Gava - I was hoping for a real battle of wills, and a lot more personal involvment. Most of the 'battle' between them was from afar. I think this was ultimately the biggest disappointment of the book. I wouldn't have minded the extra long build up to have a big reward at the end. To be honest, I thought it was going to do a to-be-continued right at the heat of things and that there was a direct-continuation-sequel coming as the pages diminished, and I was going to buy it. I feel kinda like the guys Cy beat at gambling. If there had been a set up for a sequel with the showdown, with the three main chars, I definitely would have felt more 4-stars-ish towards this book.

The ending definitely tied things up well.

The only other thing worth mentioning here - is that I struggled to catch on to the different races/peoples in the book. My descriptions of the Stravad, Gaviston, Gavistra and Orahim would maybe be sufficient, but wouldn't be particularly impressive. This might be entirely my fault due to my lack of experience with fantasy novels. But I also struggled to get my head round the mechanics of Kai's family tree in terms of his mother, and usually I follow things like that quite well.

So all in all, a good book, a couple of brilliantly crafted characters, and a generally interesting and gripping plotline. For me, it fell down on some of the details and the pacing of the 'showdown' which could have been beyond amazing to read. But this is coming from someone who tried to read Lord of the Rings a few years back and ended up finding it too boring and skipping along to the 'good' bits - so if you consider that sacrilege, then probably you won't find this review very pertinent!

After many unsuccessful attempts trying to receive this book as a giveaway, I gave up and bought it for my Kindle. I am so glad that I did.

I really loved this book!!! If allowed, I would give this a 4.5 rating. As I have said before, I really appreciate a well written book. There were only a few instances that I had to re-read a sentence due to an error or a stylistic choice. I loved that this book, in its 596 pages, provided satisfying resolutions to each major storyline. When I read this many pages, I don’t want to wait a year for the sequel. The stand-alone quality of this book had me wanting to downgrade the rating I have given many other books.

The Prologue caught me hook, line and sinker. After reading it, I had high hopes. I wasn’t disappointed. However, it did take me a few chapters to really get into the story. Once that happened, I spent many a night reading until the wee hours of the next morning. Immediately upon finishing this book, I downloaded and began reading the next in the series. Much to my son’s annoyance, I haven’t gone to see the Hunger Games movie because I’ve wanted to keep reading. (Because of his age, he can’t see it until I do.)

The author successfully brought the story to life. Even though I found aspects of the story to be predictable, they were not distracting or unfulfilling. I became so completely invested in the characters. I cared about what happened to them, I journeyed with them, I wanted to slap them, I was filled with anxiety and fear for them, I even cried with them. Overall, I found the journey to be completely satisfying. I can’t wait to see where the author takes me in the sequel.

This was a great story and the world of Loden is definitely as intriguing as the characters she creates. She does a great job developing good, bad, and not quite so sure what their angle is characters. I am hooked and will have to read more about the world she shared with us.

When I finished recording EMERALD: THE TALISMAN OF ELDON, I was exhausted, spent. As often happens when I complete the run of a show onstage, I actually became physically ill, so all-encompassing was the task of recording ML HAMILTON's story of this new world of Samar.

'Epic fantasy' does not begin to describe the width and breadth of the series, WORLD OF SAMAR, for which EMERALD is Book 1. This is a new genre for me. Both as a reader and as a narrator. But more than the potential scope of the genre, it is the depth of this story and the sweeping majesty of the world created therein that inspires awe. The intricate nature of the storytelling deserves the highest standard of recording excellence. ML HAMILTON spares not a single detail as she describes this new planet, this new world. She leaves no heart untouched in the nuance of each character and their plight. She is leonine in her depiction of battle and the ravages of war.

The recording demands for this audiobook were numerous; from a gigantic cast list, to robotic armies, powerful weapons, new species with unique languages, and original locales. The plot is dense, the novel over 500 pages, with multiple twists and turns. It took well over a month and a half to record.

So majestic is this epic fantasy series, ML and I felt the audiobook needed to be set apart somehow - the production made as special as the story itself. Storyteller Productions has added an original soundscape for this series, composed by percussionist and professional recording artist, Bruce Carver. Bruce engineers and produces all of Storyteller's creations. You can enjoy a taste of his outstanding work for the WORLD OF SAMAR series on our Storyteller Productions' Soundcloud page. >https://soundcloud.com/bruce-kelley-3...

EMERALD is a story of war. It is a story of coming of age, much too soon. It is a story of extreme, heart-wrenching love and its loss. It speaks of integrity and evil, courage and degradation, strength and commitment. It leads us to question what is right and what is just, what is humane, and what is worth dying for. At the end of the day, as all good books should, EMERALD: THE TALISMAN OF ELDON made me want to be a better person, be better to those I love, and fight for what I believe in. At end of recording, EMERALD has made me a better narrator; more focused on each moment, more present at every session, more involved in the imaginary lives of the characters to whom I give life. And it stays with me long after the book is closed and the mic is turned off.

THE HEIRS OF ELDON, Book 2 in the series, WORLD OF SMAR is already in the can, with a full 11 titles already available to be recorded in total, and possibly more to come.

I am an avid reader. Books, reading, listening are a vital and intimate part of my life. I promise you, you will fall in love with this series. I have.

I received this book free of charge from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.

I don't even know how to begin this review because I loved everything about this book! I'm so in awe of it, words escape me! I'm not kidding, this was the best epic fantasy book I have read in a long, long time. The characters were so well developed and fleshed out that after finishing the book, I miss them! I want to re-read it right away just so I can get my daily dose of them! There were too many to mention, because important characters were being added throughout the book. The main character would be Kiameron, who was a prince who didn't want to be a king, who found out that he was so much more than that. He had to dig way down deep to come to terms with who he really was, in order to save a lot of people. But there were so many additional characters who helped him along the way, who were just as important to the story.

The plot is too big to talk about, because I refuse to give away one little thing that happens. So much happens, and there are so many twists and turns, that I want the readers to discover everything themselves, just the way I did. This is one of those books where certain people start out on a quest, but everyone gets split up into mini-quests, people get separated, come back together, get separated again, and it all comes together in an awesome way. Each group picks up more people along the way, some live, some die, but nothing is ever wasted. The plot moves along at a great pace. Relationships have time to develop, but in a way that neither action nor emotion take precedence, everything just happens as it should.

I know this is a confusing review, as the book was really long and involved and there was too much happening to do it justice, but let me just say this: This book is worth every second you spend reading it! If I could have given it 10 stars I would have! It reminds me a bit of the Shannara books and the Wheel of Time books, in the epic way that they are written. I don't know if there are going to be more books, but it was left in a way that there could be, and I for one am hoping that there are!

I tried really hard with this book. I really did. But it's nearly a month after I started, and it took something of a supreme effort to even get to 25% - the cut-off point I had assigned if it didn't pick up.

The names of people and places felt forced and unwieldy; this is the first time I've been reading a fantasy book and found the made-up names of characters tripping me up. There are different races, but I have no idea what any of them look like. Heck, I didn't even realise one of the characters wasn't human until about 20% of the way through! There are references to different creatures and beings, but with no descriptions I struggled to differentiate between them or remember which was which. And I'm not a particularly visual person - I can't imagine what it would be like to be a visual person trying to read this book. And this lack of description leads into a general lack of description when it comes to the story. We aren't told enough. I've found this problem in a couple of others books - trying to foster mystery by being vague but instead just being annoying - but in those at least I wanted to carry on reading the story itself. Here, I didn't really care. There was a random introduction which I still don't understand the relevance of, and which made the first chapter confusing when I was trying to (unsuccessfully) match characters to it.

I think there's probably something in here - indeed, based on the generally very positive reviews posted by others there must be - but there are too many frustrating things in this book for me. Maybe I'll come back to it one day and give it another go, but for now I need to move on to other books.

It isn’t very often that a book grabs me so much that events in the story bring tears to my eyes. Emerald is one of those rare (forgive the pun) gems that has captured my heart.
I absolutely Love this story. The characters are well developed – endearing and interesting. The scenes are vividly described and filled with depth and emotion.
My favorite characters in Emerald have to be Kai and Cy. These two men go through more in this story than I could even imagine, and throughout their trials they each grow stronger and show their depth of character.
I also loves Marri, her story is a small part of this volume but it is a great beginning to a love story that makes me smile.
I would recommend Emerald to anyone who enjoys epic tales of good versus evil. I will confess that at almost 600 pages Emerald is a long story, but it is well paced and keeps the readers attention throughout the entire length.
I would warn you this, keep a box of tissues handy as you progress toward the end of the book. IT will tug at your heartstrings.
I am definitely looking forward to the second book in the series – Eldon’s Heir.

I won & received this book through Goodreads.

I absolutely loved this book! It pulled me in and took me on a wonderful adventure! I can't stand overly descriptive books and it was the perfect amount. Enough to take me on a journey, but not bore me with the details. Very well written and a great read! I have to admit, I was worried about how long it was going to take me to read, there are alot of pages lol, but I enjoyed every single page, and it read very quickly! Thanks so much for allowing me to enjoy it so much, through this wonderful giveaway!

It took me a little while to become familiar with the characters and the events but about a fourth of the way through it I just couldn't put the book down, I was so anxious to find out what would happen next. The story is very creative and the characters win you over. I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it.

The story started out slowly, but once it picked up pace, was very enjoyable to read. The characters were interesting, although I wanted Kai to "man-up" sooner than he did. Not sure if there is going to be a sequel, but would be interested in reading it.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:

Ms Hamilton has become one of those writers whose books I'd buy blindfolded...:) so when offered the first installment in her new series I jumped at the occasion without hesitation. And I don't regret it a bit:)
The book is long, yes, and the listen is even longer:) But it's also a tale that gets you surprisingly (or not...:)) immersed in it after the first chapter. And yes, there are times when you feel a bit lost, with so many different characters, so many different races and not so much explanation about all of them at the beginning - but it made me even more engaged in the story; I just wanted to find out exactly who was who, why they acted the way they did and what the end of the whole complex intrigue would be.

As I said, there are a lot of characters in the book, some of them appear only for a fleeting moment, but all of them have a place in the story, all of them are full-bodied people, and none of them leave you indifferent. What I like best about them is that you react to them as if they were real - like I did with Kai. I liked him at first a lot, understood his longing for normalcy, even felt sympathetic towards him; then I got angrier and angrier with him for behaving the way he did, for being reckless, careless, haughty... Then he redeemed himself in my eyes again... just like in real life - you feel angry when someone doesn't fulfill your expectations or lets you down, but you still like them because you know they are good in their heart:)
But I have to admit that it's Cy who stole my heart - his story is both touching and inspirational, and he makes a wonderful counterpart hero for Kai. The book wouldn't have been so good without them both complementing each other...:)

As for the plot itself, it's so full of twists and subplots that it would be enough material for three separate novels:) Not that I'm complaining, mind you:) But just a warning: don't start listening if you can't spare at least 3 or 4 hours in one go - cause the tale is addictive; once you press the play button the syndrome of '5 more minutes' hits you right in the head and doesn't let go...:)

Narration by Ms Hazen is impeccable as usual :) She's a great narrator that I've listened to so many times before and yet her ability to bring characters to life still astonishes me. And I am always in awe of the way she makes all of the voices so distinguishable, so their own, so true... It's a fantastic duo of a writer and a narrator :)

This is one of the longest single books I have listened to. The story is well written and so detailed. There are a couple of “groups” of individuals with similar names, so there were a few times I got a little confused, but I was quickly able to get back on course. All in all, a very entertaining listen.

M. L. Hamilton is a master storyteller. She paints such vivid pictures with her words, and her characters become so real.

Kelley Hazen always does a fantastic job. The voices she chooses for the characters really fit them. My only complaint would be that the effects used to differentiate the dream sequences sometimes overpowered the narration. I needed to back up and re-listen a few times to make sure I really heard what was going on.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the narrator and it is 27 hours of some of the most enjoyable listening I've done in awhile. All Kai wants is to be normal, not a king especially not The Heir. Fate has other plans for him though. Following his nightmares into the daylight changes the world as he knows it. The characters are well written and intriguing in this tale of combining two lives of two very different men. This series has something for everyone, suspense, drama, mystery, humour and a touch of romance. This combination of author and narrator creates pure enjoyment.

While I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story I went through 99.9% of it wishing I could slap the stupid out of the protagonist Kai. He was just to whimpering for me to like. Everything else in it is well constructed & interesting.

I really want to give this books 4 stars, buts it's not quite there. Yet. (If 3.5 stars were an option, then that would be my current rating.)

Pros:
+ Intertwining story lines (I have yet to reach the meeting point but am looking forward to it)
+ Charming hero
+ A baddie who you wish was a goodie
+ Another baddie seemingly void of redeeming qualities (woo, someone to hate)

Cons:
- Little magic (although less than halfway through, so there is hope)
- Rubbish cover (yep, I do judge a book by its cover. Even though I read on a Kindle)
- No bubble factor. I don't feel immersed in the world/characters/story.

When I have completed the book I shall re-review. Watch this space.

P.S. I do like this book or I wouldn't still be reading it!

I won this book on Goodreads First Reads.

Before this book I don't think I'd sort of grown out of fantasy and hadn't been reading it as much. This book reminded me why I loved it so much while in school.

The characters are well written, uniquely their own. The plot is fast paced and fun, it grips you from the first page and doesn't let you go until the end. The details are vivid and beautiful, it feels like you're transported there.

Nothing about this book is disappointing. I highly recommend.
