Reads R to L (Japanese Style) T+ audience. Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the ""Angels"" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo--commander of the secret organization NERV--to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called ""Evangelion"" to match the Angels' fearsome power...

OMG Shinji! It is not the time to self pity! There is a war out there! ( I can't blame him though) I am happy about Asuka, but I would like to have more explanations about how her mother's soul is in EVA? Origin of mankind and all the quick background information was nice but not enough. It would be confusing for someone who hasn't already know about the impacts and angels and all. The more important problem with this volume: COME ON! Why Misato ???? She was my favourite character from NGE! *still in denial*
Humans are the only creature that can hate its own kind.
That was cool when Shinji commanded the Eva Unit 01 a.k.a. his mother (the awakened Evangelion) after getting all depressed about losing everyone (bruh, same here.)—but let's be honest, Asuka owned this volume. The battle against the Eva series was a gory and fulfilling action sequence. I couldn't commend the art style more. It was the highlight of the whole volume, especially Asuka's psyche waking up as good as new. Also, Commander Ikari is such a selfish bastard. I knew it, his character's just purely evil and beyond redemption, all the while there's Misato sacrificing herself for the children's fight against JSSDF who annihilated at least a quarter and a half population of NERV if not all. Crossing Katsuragi off my list—how many of my favorite characters died now?
3.25 stars in one of the climaxes of Evangelion, that being the infiltration of NERV, we see what many claim to be the herald of the series. yet, like other works that follow a similar shift in themes, I'm not a big fan. after sequences of full epic battles against the angels, having humans as the final threat was not what I expected from the series. I love the concepts of humans being puppeteers in a world of larger, more overt adversaries. Gendo Ikari's character arc and his perspective on the instrumentality project is engaging and works in the narrative. nonetheless, the sudden shift to mob-like gun battle sequences ended up falling flat. Asuka's intense scenes as she reawakens are definitely the highlight of the volume for me. I understand how some people are frustrated with Shinji's demotivated outlook on life but I honestly just feel bad for him. it's questionable how people's reaction a protagonist struggling with mental health is annoyance instead of seeing his emotional turmoil.
Tremendo volumen.
This summation will be much shorter than the others. I want to finish the series this week, before my friend's wedding. And ..to just move on with my life.
The Story: Shinji has been (stubbornly) crippled for about two volumes now. I can't say I blame him. But it takes the loss of another friend and mentor and the hope of saving another that pushes him to finally fight on.
If last volume was about revelations, this volume is about cementing their meanings, confirming the clockwork complications.
Quote appreciation!
1) After all, you're still alive. And as long as you're alive there's always something you can do. I'm not like Commander Ikari. I do want you to pilot the Eva, but I don't want you to give up hope. I want you to pilot the Eva for yourself, not others. - Misato, pg. 66
2) Long ago a celestial body carrying an egg of life fell to Earth. [...] - This and other important intel provided by Misato, pgs. 93-97
Art appreciation!
1) Among the myriad Evas with their new, unsettling designs, the closeup of Unit-02 on pg. 121, panel 4, stands out, almost majestically. Look at the eyes and strapping chin gleaming in the light.
2) Calling out to 母さん, Shinji has proves the link between him and Yui is intrinsic in Unit-01, who awakens a second time to aid him in his fight. Ending the book with another striking Eva image like this was the perfect way to wrap up volume 12. (pg. 178)
Moment appreciation!
1) Asuka laying waste to the JSSDF and the new Eva series for.. the whole second half of the volume. 'Nuff said.
2) Misato goes out with a kiss kiss, bang bang. (pgs. 140-160)
The Extras: 1st ptg, March '11. In the bios Shigeru Aoba is finally mentioned, but, frankly, I forgot how much he really has just blended into the background even now. We don't know much about this guy. His other two Central Dogma operators have been more fleshed out by comparison. Maya via Ritsuko and Makoto via Misato. This guy's job is really just to get panicked and punch buttons. Speaking of underutilized characters, a wild Japanese Prime Minister appears for two whole pages on 83 and 84!
In his afterward, Sadamoto admits to us he is incapable of having an A.T. Field, and so for work and parenting he shifs between the (LCL?) states of Shinji and Gendo, except when it comes to his own (A.T. field generating?) selfishness.
This is the first book to credit khara before Gainax. And is this really the first time I'm noticing the glossary intro stating what volume it's for? "Welcome to the sound effects glossary for volume twelve [...]" Grrr! The example hiragana SFX, 84-4 is wrong. No fourth panel even exists. This may be from volume 11.
The official Japanese and English voice actresses for Asuka are invited to v12 to discuss Asuka, as her re-emergence in the manga and the (then, on the near horizon) 2.0, You Can (Not) Advance, heralding Asuka's appearance in the Rebuilds, was a timely coincidence. The foreign language actresses have met, which is rare, but cool. I'm reminded of how much two episodes were on VHS. And suddenly spiral down my life's rabbit hole. So, this past week, at a con one of my co-worker's (Keli) friends name-dropped her to Monica Rial, who had previously attended (Keli's) Birds of Prose women's book club as a guest. In it, she mentioned that Tiffany Grant was her mentor on her voice over journey. Well, Tiffany and I both worked on a fan project called Eva-R (no, not Rebuild), over at http://www.eva-r.com/. The site is still functioning and I downloaded the trailer with us together in the credits. And now I'm trying to see what Reddit and YouTube think about it. I need to stop! And the website that hosted Tiffany's article, "In Defense of Asuka", mentioned in this book, Modus Productions (www.modusproductions.com/eva-r/tiff/m...), seems to be Tiffany's personal domain or was lent to her by the fanwork. It now redirects to http://www.truantpixel.com/eva-r/tiff.... Crazy!

After the disastrous results of a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, an alien species known only as Angels terrorizes the last remnants of humanity. Young children are raised in military schools and trained to combat these godlike entities by piloting giant biomechanical mechas into battle. The story revolves around the personal struggles of the members of NERV, the shady organization responsible for the creation of these mechas; most notably the cold and calculated leader Gendo Ikari and his chronically depressed son Shinji.
The surface level story of Evangelion is deceptively simple. It appears to be a straightforward apocalypse story about the last survivors of humanity fighting back against an alien race that nearly drove them to extinction, but there’s a lot of depth in the background of the plot. There’s more to the Angels than meets the eye. NERV has a disturbing number of skeletons in its closet. And the few survivors in charge of fighting against the aliens have an abundance of mental scars in desperate need of being healed lest they destroy themselves before the Angels can get to them.
I love the subtle depth of the characters. Shinji appears to be a cold and distant boy with odd tendencies that are almost sociopathic in nature, but he turns out to be an extremely sensitive and anxiety-ridden teen who suffers from a lack of parental guidance and affection. He’s not always likable, but he’s uncomfortably relatable. Asuka appears to be a bratty and spunky girl with all the confidence in the world, but she suffers from a self-destructive inferiority complex caused by past tragedies that causes her to act out in front of adults to make herself appear more mature than she really is while struggling with emotional breakdowns in her private time.
Every character has a facade they put on in front of their peers, only for it to be revealed that they’re hiding a brutal amount of unhealed trauma and emotional baggage that usually causes more damage than the main threat of the story. In fact, the main story is just a part of the background. What makes Evangelion a masterpiece in my eyes is how horrifyingly human the characters are, how painful their struggles are and how disastrous their bad choices end up being.
A very bleak, depressing and terrifying series that tackles nihilistic philosophy and twisted religious allegories in abundance, but there are faint glimmers of hope and lessons to be learned from the catastrophic mistakes made by the mentally and emotionally broken cast.
I enjoyed reading this much more as an adult than I did as a teen!
This one's dark. The theme of this volume is pretty much "man's inhumanity to man," with repeated scenes of soldiers mercilessly (and completely unnecessarily!) gunning down NERV employees, and several of them being slaughtered in turn by Gendo and Misato, with dozens later being crushed like ants by Asuka in Unit-02. On the personal level, there's the part where Gendo sits Shinji down and tells him that he resented his own son for taking up part of Yui's love and attention.
The interesting major difference here is that Gendo shows up and actually saves Shinji's life, showing off the eye of Adam in his hand before their little father-son talk.
In contrast, Asuka's battle seems to have been taken beat-for-beat from the movie, and I'm not sure what to make of this. Maybe Sadamoto just figured that it was already perfect and didn't need any adjustments.
What can I say? The art is as amazing as always, the story holds together at least as well as it did in the anime, and the format allows us to spend a little longer digging into the characters, their psychology and motivations. And somehow it's really hitting home for me, as it didn't while watching the anime, how deeply messed up everyone and everything is.

This masterpiece has taken a special spot in my heart. After watching the anime, I thought how about read the novel. So I did it. Since it was soo good that it left an impact on me. I decided to go on and research about Evangelion. This leads me to discover the depressing things author Hideaki Anno had to go through. He mentioned in an interview that Evangelion is a way of expression Hideaki Anno was using to burn down his feelings of depression. I wouldn't say that Shinji Ikari is my favorite protagonist, but I can't help it but feel relatable to him. During this novel as well as the anime it almost feels like I am Shinji, I felt like I was betrayed. My feelings were betrayed. Shinji will always be the most unique protagonist I will ever see, because the protagonist is not the ideal version of himself, as if Evangelion is telling me that Shinji is the person you would never want to be. This is my review of Evangelion as a whole.
“I don’t want to atone to god. I want to REVENGE on him.”
——————
Honestly having seen “End of Evangelion”, each page turn filled me with more dread than the same action for a Junji Ito book. AND THATS SAYING SOMETHING!
Anyways, the climax has officially started now, and omg it’s perfect. This is possibly my favourite volume in the series so far, and it handles everything PERFECTLY! Especially that bonus scene with Gendo and Shinji.
But most of all, the art on display is amazing. It flawlessly displays the absolute horror of a situation that everyone is in, and the fight scene with Asuka is incredible.
That being said, one chapter is a bit TOO handholdy with exposition… but the ideas it is trying to communicate is just that complicated so I’ll give it a pass here.
Was allerdings Ikari treibt... wird langsam echt sonderbar. Vorallem...
I cursed G-d. Then asked him: Why do you give? And why do you take?

^ this quote is actually me talking about how good the manga is only to be hit with End of Evangelion bullshit in the last volumes like bro why did people decide EOE was better than the original ending. Like at least they didn’t include the awful opening scene but they DID leave the Misato kiss in for NO reason but I mean hey on brand of Evangelion to refuse to engage w it’s content critically right better to just jerk off to Freud
