Ross & Sullivan #1

Devil's Rock

Rate this book

Two women vow to bring a killer to justice.

Deputy Andrea Sullivan had hoped to leave the horrors of Los Angeles behind her, but the serial murders of college students in peaceful, picturesque Sedona is her nightmare case to solve. The complexities stretch local resources to the limit, and the FBI joins the case with Agent Cameron Ross in the lead.

The crime scenes are covered with the trademark signs of the fiendish Patrick Doe, whose handiwork has been investigated by Dallas detective Tori Hunter and others. But where Hunter failed Cameron intends to win. She will break the case, find justice and go home. No distractions.

Unfortunately, Deputy Sullivan is very distracting. And Patrick Doe has other plans.

Bestselling, award-winning Gerri Hill presents the turmoil of unbidden passion combined with heart-pounding suspense in a compelling story inspired by her own Hunter’s Way.

Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix.
Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends.
Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise...
"I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."

This was a good one. I realized I still have a ton of Gerri Hill books to read, and after really enjoying Hunter's Way I thought I would go for another of Hill's crime books, and I was not disappointed.
I thought the crime/mystery part of the books was really good. The serial killer made an interesting case, and you wondered if they could ever stop the killing.
Both mains were likeable. I enjoyed their banter, flirting and arguing, that lasted through most of the book. The romance developed a little quickly, but it didn't bother me. And their chemistry was absolutely believable.
I also have to mention how much I loved Lola (kitten). For a character that didn't speak, the interactions between her and the mains, kept making me smile.
I have heard book 2 Hell's Highway is even better, so I'm looking forward to continuing the journey with these characters.

Devil’s Rock is the first instalment of Deputy Sheriff Andrea Sullivan and FBI Agent Cameron Ross.

This story is a well crafted police procedural mystery thriller with romance thrown in! Love the witty dialogue and banter between Sullivan and Ross. And the kitten! Who would have thought a tiny kitten could turn, what appeared, a tough person to mush?

The case both women are trying to solve is a follow on from Partners, the third book in the Tori Hunter and Sam Kennedy series. Hunter makes a brief cameo appearance in this book. I recommend that Partners is read before reading Devil’s Rock, to get a sense of the serial killings that is occurring in this book.

Now, I’m about to start reading the sequel, Hell’s Highway. This will complete my marathon of reading some Gerri Hills books this weekend!

I realized I probably should have started with Gerri Hill's Hunter Series first, since this series very lightly spins-off from events there, but thankfully I wasn't lost with the plot - I just didn't care for the characters (one character in particular) and found my belief in a fair few things waned too severely for me to continue. I got 50% in and skimmed most of the rest.

I did not like Agent Cameron Ross, she's incredibly arrogant and egotistical. Constantly flirting and staring at Deputy Andrea Sullivans ass, and asking her deeply personal questions that are clearly putting her on edge, yet still steamrolling through to get a rise out of her. I don't like those sorts of people that bait and goad others on, while acting all smug and superior when they get a heated response and act all "gotcha" about it - so I REALLY struggled to like her character AT ALL. There's points where she states she will be more professional, but then goes right back to flirting and making inappropriate comments. So it's just bizarre to me that anyone would find that shit-eating grin behaviour endearing. I wanted to punch her face, many times.

Because of that, I also struggled with Andi's attraction to her. I felt the relationship went from minus -000 to 100 far too quickly, and in my mind didn't make much sense. I also loathed that it was Andi apologising a lot of the time, when I thought Cameron should have been the one to say sorry. Talk about gas-lighting behaviours.

I stopped reading when the two decided to kiss right after Andi told her NO, multiple times, and again Cameron starts with the goading for her to kiss her, not taking the NO for an answer. Holy sociopath. The fact Andi allows herself to be manipulated, also doesn't paint her in a good light, either. It makes her seem weak and easily swayed.

As for the serial killer storyline. I really had trouble believing the FBI has this ridiculous hopped up RV computer wagon traveling around the country, with a highly skilled FBI/former Military Agent doing nothing but inputting data into it. A job that could be done back at Quantico, from reports and files. There was no real need for her to even be there. It made no sense. Don't get me started on the ridiculous 'algorithm' nonsense, to predict where a serial killer will strike/dump next. Puhlease.

I felt little emotional connection to the victims, and so there was a complete disconnect with regards to the crimes despite them being so shocking, so that didn't work for me. I never felt invested, or cared enough to want to catch the killer, because it all seemed so arbitrary.

I will try another Gerri Hill sometime, but considering most everyone else loved them and I nit-picked so many issues - maybe they aren't for me.

Another solid read from Gerri Hill!

Devil's Rock is yet another continuation of her Hunter series but also the start of a new series, Ross & Sullivan.

Here we follow Andrea Sullivan, a former Narcotics agents from Los Angeles who after a tragedy relocates to Sedona for a much quieter life but oh boy what's this! She finds herself in the middle of serial killer investigation after a number of bodies of young women are found in their usuallly peaceful paradise and now must join up with FBI agent/beach bum lookalike Cameron Ross to bring a killer to justice.

It was quite fortuitous that I decided to jump straight from Hunter 3 (Partners) to this one because this book happens to continue a case that was worked on in said book and even though you don't have to read the Hunter series to enjoy this one, it felt a lot more intense knowing the inner details of the history of the case intimately and seeing these new characters react to those events.

I liked Andrea Sullivan and Cameron Ross, both very similar characters in a way which I liked, usually these books go with opposites attract but here we have two tortured women who like to keep to themselves which was quite refreshing.

The case was fun and heartbreaking to follow with every new body discovered and the story moved along very nicely, I never felt bored. The romance was enjoyable and nicely balanced this time around, Hunter 3 for me leaned quite heavily on the relationship aspect in my opinion but here it felt perfectly done, nice mixture of intense romance and intense mystery suspense.

Gerri Hill continues to impress.

This is a new author for me. I noted she has created a story of strong female characters. Andrea Sullivan once was a Los Angeles police officer. She moved to Sedona, Arizona and went to work as a deputy sheriff. Then serial murders of college students occur. The FBI send in Agent Cameron Ross to lead the investigation.

The book is well written and fast paced. I picked up the book to read because the story was taking place in Sedona. I am very tired of serial killers and wish authors would give the topic a rest for a while. The plot twists and turns and the characters are interesting. The descriptions of scenic Sedona are great. I was disappointed that the two lead women had a lot of personal baggage, but that did not interfere with their excellent job performance. I wish an author would write about a hero who is emotionally healthy, brilliant and superb at their jobs. The book provides a good “who done it” story; but most likely I will not bother to read this author again.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is about 8 hours long. Abby Craden does a good job narrating the book. She is a new narrator for me. Craden is an actor, voice over artist and award winning audiobook narrator.

Loved this one but just realized I did because it’s a character driven story. The crime builds from the Hunter series in a way, but it’s pretty loose and no need to read it beforehand. This one is about the mains and Hill kept me engaged with tears at the end and everything. Wonderful narration by Craden as usual.

Excellent

What I most like about Gerri Hill is her ability to incorporate humour with the seriousness of the story.

It's a great story, which kind of continues on from the Hunter series which I have come to call season two but in fact it's book two.
A serial killer has come to the sleepy town of Sedona. It is well thought out. And the description of the scenery is breath taking. Just marred by the horrendous murder.
FIB agent Ross and local sheriff deputy are pulled together to work the case.

It's exciting and amusing.

I loved it.

An entertaining police procedural which only loses a star thanks to overuse of the word algorithm. It's nice to see all genres of popular fiction represented with solid lesbian characters. The rescue kitty was sweet and a useful device to soften the hard edges on both Andrea and Cameron.

I hate you Gerri Hill ;) I just spent two nights reading this wonderful story and now I have to read on (Hell's Highway). I have to, there is no choice. I can't ignore the small voices inside my head that tell me to read on, sleep is overrated ;) I really want to know how this story goes on. Anway, I loved this story. It had everything, a blossoming love story, just the right amount of tension and two awesome lead characters (as well as a little kitten named Lola). Gotta run, the next book is waiting ;) Thumbs up!

Gerri Hill did it again!

She knows exactly how to combine romance and thriller together.
It was an exciting serial killer story, but it's also a good romance.
So the best of romance and thriller in one book, that's what you get with Gerri Hill.

I loved the chemistry between Cameron and Andrea.
It was almost as good as The Hunter's Way Series.
As a thriller I think it was even better, but for me Hunter and Sam brought a bit more romance than Cameron and Andrea did.

I am looking forward to read the sequel Hell's Highway. Hopefully it's of the same quality as the first one.

Again Gerri Hill didn't disappoint.
Great characters, nice murder-story.
I'd just recommend reading the first three Hunter books (especially the third one, "Partner") first for a more complete understanding of the bad guy here.
It's no problem to read it without it, but it's even better with prior knowledge...

I picked this one up because I'm always up for a good police procedural, throw in some lesbians, and hey sounds like a fun afternoon. Very quickly it was clear I misjudged this. The characters are the same "haunted" lesbian cops I must have read about in a dozen other books. And lest we forget--they're also earth-shatteringly attractive. The actual serial killer story started slightly interesting, but quickly veered into the land of ridiculous. I was rolling my eyes all throughout the "climactic" showdown. This is very procedural-lite. Very very VERY lite, as in if you care more about repetitive and cliche love scenes than an accurate investigation or story that makes sense, you'll love this book! And if I ever read the term "Quantico geeks" again, I'm going to punch something.

This book is an extent of another crime romance novel from Gerri Hill. I really liked the crime aspect of the novel and feel that Hill got creative with her story. This includes the criminal that got away in the previous series and intertwining the two stories was seamless. You can read this as a stand-alone novel but I would recommend reading the other books before.

Also, the two MCs had some wonderful chemistry. This is a steamy romance as well as a great crime story which is a trope I like.

Abby Craden reads this novel and I rarely have any complaints about her performances.

3.5 rounded up.
Wow I am on a Gerri Hill SPEEDRUN rn. I didn't even know about this series, but realized that I needed to finish the first two books before getting to the Ross and Sullivan x Hunter crossover Angel Fire . No hardship to me, I finished this one in no time flat.

When bodies start appearing in the Grand Canyon, arrogant and cantankerous FBI agent Cameron Ross is assigned to enter data points into her algorithm to pinpoint a possible next location where the killer will be. When she gets to Arizona, she has to work with ex-LAPD officer Deputy Andrea Sullivan in order to solve the case. We quickly learn that this killer is one fans of the Hunter series should be familiar with, after all Tori Hunter and her team failed to catch him in Dallas after he killed 3 people. As the case gets more dangerous, Cameron and Andrea must set aside their initial distaste for each other in order to catch a serial killer.

I just have to say, it's such a fresh concept (to me) to have a plotline cut across series and characters, it was exciting to follow along and know how the first part of the case played out and see cameos from known characters appear in this one.

Devil's Rock features a very mild enemies to lovers, maybe more like annoyance to lovers. I also had an annoyance to love relationship with Cameron Ross. She definitely isn't easy to like at first and reminded me a lot of Tori Hunter. In fact, many aspects of this book featured Gerri Hill staple menu items I've come to enjoy; a grumpy agent/officer who has a soft side for her lover, a fast-paced murder mystery, and the main pairing having to contend with the professional and romantic relationship. Hill loves to have her characters work amazing together to kick butt and solve crime while falling in love with one another and I'm here for it. It gives me a forbidden love vibe with less angst and risk. It's also fun to see the women cooperate and excel at their jobs, and then be able to be sweet and romantic to each other once off the clock. The only thing that continues to be a problem to me is the unmarked POV and scene changes. Bruh. Just add a little dash or an extra space please! It gives me actual vertigo to be yanked around like that :(

Both the romance and the thriller were solidly fleshed out and the ending was satisfying enough Kudos to Gerri Hill for satisfying my sapphic criminal minds cravings yet again.

TL;DR--Hill does it again! A great continuation to the case Hunter and friends were solving with a lovable main pairing. 3.5/5 stars.

Devil’s Rock was a really solid read - classic Gerri Hill. After enjoying Hunter’s series, I chose Devil's Rock as it's linked to the series but with different leads. I ended up loving this book - the mystery was strong, the pacing tight, and the serial killer storyline kept me hooked the whole way through. It was a pleasant surprise that there was a return of one of the craziest serial killers within the Hunter series. It’s dark at times, but the investigative side felt authentic and engaging.

Cameron and Andrea were both great leads. I loved their banter - the teasing, arguing, and slow shift toward genuine affection felt believable. The romance did develop a little quickly, but their chemistry made it work. And Lola the kitten absolutely stole the show. Somehow Hill manages to weave in moments like that without losing the grit of the story.

It’s definitely one of the better blends of thriller and romance I’ve read from Hill — the tension never drops, but you still get those softer moments that make her books so satisfying. And as always, Abby Craden’s narration is flawless. Can't wait to read another from Gerri Hill. ❤️

A bit too criminal / too many dead bodies for my taste but the romance was hot and felt right: I loved the part when they told each other's their past... worth reading, but not for the timid.

Another great read. I really enjoy Gerri Hills series. She definitely knows how to write Romance and Murder Mysteries. I know I can rely on her to deliver.
With Devil’s Rock we get our introduction to Andy and Cameron. Both women are scared by loss. Andy lost her whole team and lover in a bust gone wrong. She feels guilty and holds herself off from being close with anyone because of it. Cameron has physical and emotional scars. She lost so much in her life time. She’s arrogant and cocky all used to close herself off from others. When the two meet they find something in the other that breaches all the walls and defenses they’ve built to protect themselves. I love watching them fall in love.
I also get the closure I needed with the Patrick Doe case that Tori, Casey, and Leslie dealt with in Partners. We learn more of how he commits his murders and who helps him. Using algorithms Cameron and Andy are able to predict his movements and stop him. Hill keeps you guess and interested with twists and turns throughout the story.
Bonus we get a little chat with Casey and Tori and learn that Tori has taken a position with the FBI.

I really like Hill's books. I enjoyed detective Hunter and Sam, but I really like Agent Ross. I like the banter between Ross and Sullivan, the chemistry between them is good. I like Hill's dialogue, to me the characters never seem contrite or over worked, there is a natural flow with the dialogue and I don't always find that in fiction. I can't wait to see what happens with Ross and Sullivan after Hell's Highway. I hope their journey continues.

Torn between a two and three star rating. Hill writes well, the characters are engaging, the setting was different, and yes, I plowed through the book. On the other side of things, there were quite a few suspensions of disbelief required to go along with the story.

I never finished this book. The characters felt recycled and impersonal, both with traumatic pasts so similar I had a hard time telling them apart. One of them kept disrespecting the other's expressed wishes, which does not sexy make.

Where to start..?

I enjoy Gerri’s characters and I can be a sucker for a cliche. I think Cameron & Andrea are my new favourite couple. (Formally CJ & Paige)

I liked how this book carried on from Partners (Hunter series) because that ending annoyed me a little! (I wanted them to catch the b**tard)

I’ve had to re read Angel Fire because I made the mistake of reading that BEFORE I knew who Andi & Cameron are!!!

Review:
Romance and murder intertwined; it doesn’t get much better. I can’t recall the last time (if ever) where I have read a book and the depiction of the area as much as the characters drew me into th story. Gerri Hill’s description of Sycamore Canyon was so detailed that I had to google it to determine if it was a real place. Then I had to add it to my list of places I want to visit. Well a place I want to visit sans the serial killer. She also does a great job if letting the reader get to know two kick ass, take names later women: Deputy Sullivan and FBI Agent Ross. From their interactions you find that they have a great deal in common, including the self-efficient, loner persona they both use to protect their hearts.
I was unable to put this book down while I followed the murder investigation and their journey of discovering each other.

Another round of a plus for Gerri Hills. Her books are worthy investment. Anytime I find a book that has her name on it, I get so damn excited I just have to buy.
