Lindgren was the son of Andreas Lindgren and Helga Björk. He studied in Umeå to become a teacher and worked as a teacher until the middle of the 1970s. He was for several years active as a local politician for the Swedish Social Democratic Party. In the 1980s he converted to the Catholic faith.
Lindgren began as a poet in 1965 but had to wait until 1982 for his breakthrough, with The Way of a Serpent (Swedish: Ormens väg på hälleberget). Lindgren has been translated into more than thirty languages and was one of Sweden's most internationally successful contemporary writers. He became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1991.

Trav'ling lady, stay awhile
until the night is over.
I'm just a station on your way,
I know I'm not your lover.
Well I lived with a child of snow
when I was a soldier,
and I fought every man for her
until the nights grew colder.
She used to wear her hair like you
except when she was sleeping,
and then she'd weave it on a loom
of smoke and gold and breathing.
And why are you so quiet now
standing there in the doorway?
You chose your journey long before
you came upon this highway.

the above has very little to do with this book, but it sets a mood that i felt when i was reading this, and there is a trav'ling lady and some snow, so it can't hurt to listen to it while you read the review. it also features prominently in the movie mccabe and mrs. miller , which i also like.so.
this book is like the vivisection of a fairy tale. it starts out beautiful and quiet and cold, and goes into some unexpectedly dark places, places i think are more interesting than a lot of other, more popular swedish books (koff, what??)
on tuesday, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest came out in this country. and the crowd went wild.the book companion to the sex and the city 2 movie also came out and we sold about a million of those, too. i do not understand the appeal of either.
i read girl with the dragon tattoo , and it was fine, but i don't understand the fucking raving infatuation. it is a semi-solid piece of crime fiction, but why it is elevated above the genre almost universally is beyond my ken.
so i decided to make a new endcap of scandinavian lit that i felt was a better representation of the scope of the region's offerings (and i am in no way an expert, i just noticed that in the last month, i have read a book from denmark, one from finland, and one from sweden, and i have plenty more in my have-read-backstock.) and it is a lovely endcap, indeed. indirect r/a at its finest.
this book is out of print, or i would have included it on the display, because i think it tells a beautiful story, and it tells it very simply and well. maybe i will finally get to the point in this review, maybe not.
the story is small and simple in its scope and props - a trav'ling female writer giving a reading to an uninterested crowd in a remote town lodges in the evening with a man dying of a cancer that is eating him away into nothingness. a snowstorm strands her in his house, and while she stays (and stays and stays), she befriends the only other inhabitant of the area, the man's estranged brother, who is being killed by his own corpulence, his body oozing sweet liquid from pustules as he lolls around on a sofa all day eating sugar cubes, both of them staying alive simply to have the satisfaction of outliving the other. eventually, she learns the root of their estrangement, from both sides, and becomes a sort of confessor/ spiritual figure to them in their feud.
and that's it. but it is beautifully told - i will add some quotes tomorrow - the book is not at hand this very minute. wait here, i will return.
here is a nice one:
i figure, when i get really old, and am slapped in a nursing home, there will be many copies of the remaining two books in larsson's trilogy, along with harry potter and twilight and all the books that were overbought and then donated to the nursing home by grandchildren for whom "books" will be relics, and if i kick off in the middle of one of 'em - no biggie.

She had never found conversation appealing or enticing. In conversation thoughts are always being forced into unpredictable feints or digressions, they are twisted and distorted to please or annoy, they can be villainously treacherous. Solitary thought, on the other hand, is sovereign, it stays confined within and doesn't have to make compromises. Even when you're in two minds, you remain whole. She wanted to be left in peace with her thoughts.

Donna nubile colta nella bufera
Ci fosse un premio per l'originalità, sarebbe difficile competere con questo bellissimo romanzo proveniente dall'estremo nord della Svezia.
L'autore T. Lindgren, scomparso da poco, è fra i maggiori scrittori contemporanei internazionali.
Inverno. Paesaggio nordico totalmente coperto di neve. Solo due case, vicine ma non visibili l'una dall'altra. Due fratelli anziani gravemente malati, uno per casa, che assolutamente non si frequentano perché legati da un forte sentimento di odio-amore, soprattutto odio. Ognuno in lotta per sopravvivere all'altro : "Non darò mai a quel demonio la soddisfazione di morire prima di lui. E' questo che mi tiene in vita".
"Era stata l'età adulta a dividerli" . Sullo sfondo della memoria, una figura di donna, e non solo.
Una signora di mezz'età, nubile, scrittrice ed esperta in vite dei Santi, tiene una conferenza nel villaggio vicino. Per ragioni atmosferiche non può ripartire. E' così che viene ospitata da uno dei fratelli, quello scheletrico a differenza dell'altro grassissimo in perenne abbuffata di dolci.
La nevicata blocca la ripartenza... Sarà costretta a rimanervi per alcuni mesi.
La conferenziera sarà l'unico tramite fra i due vecchi.
Il finale è un colpo di genio : sorprendente e significativo, altamente simbolico, capace di rendere possibile una pluralità di interpretazioni, come avviene solo nei capolavori, ben degno di un film di Bergman.
La scrittura mescola dramma e ironia in modo sempre inaspettato : secondo l'anziano ospitante, il fratello "non era nemmeno malato, ma solo moribondo" ; e per sé pensa che "i primi tempi da morto avrebbe solo riposato, poi si sarebbe visto".
In un linguaggio di notevole bellezza, l'autore non ci risparmia momenti di indelicatezza, per cui agli schizzinosi consiglio la lettura... lontano dai pasti.

لا الشخصيات، ولا الدوافع، ولا الأسرار .. بل الزمن هو بطل الحكاية هنا.
هل تدرك مدى عظمة أن تكون مجرد عابر، متفرّج، خارج القصة .. هل تعرف كم يحمل هذا المرور من الأبدية، من اللانهاية.
" ستشعر أنك حصلت على ما تحتاج إليه تماماً، ستشعر بالحلاوة تملأ رأسك مثل النشوة. وبعد اللقمة العاشرة أو الخامسة عشرة لن يكون في وسعك ابتلاع أي لقمة أو قطعة أو كسرة، وسيتحول الشبع الزائد إلى انزعاج واشمئزاز وندم. "
مرّت.
وكان لمرورها مذاق الخلود؛ لأنها من رأى، لا من عاش، من عرف، لا من أحس ..
وفي ذاكرتها ستحتفظ دوماً بتلك الحيوات التي عبرتها، وبأرواح أولئك الذين ودعتهم، ليصبح داخلها مجرة، تسكنها النجوم ثم تنطفئ، لتتحول ثقوباً تحوي العالم.

November 30, 2020عندما تقابل ما يُطيح بأحد ثوابتك..ينثرها نُدفاً في الهواء..تشعر بإجتياح ماكر ومُخادع يصيبك برجفة مريعة...تُحدق فيما بات ممكناً وكنت تظن بأنه مُستحيلاً...تفرك عينيك مراراُ بأصابعك المرتعشة لعل الرؤية تنجلي...همهمة خافتة تنبعث من دواخلك تؤرقك....تطرح تساؤلاً يبتدىء ب "كيف"..ويظل مُعلقاً بلا تتمة ولا جواب....تتوق إلى أن يكون الأمر برمته كابوساً ثقيلاً..وستأذن لحظة اليقظة بالتخلص من قبضته اللعينة....
هنا أُطيح بقناعتي بشأن علاقة الأخوة المُقدسة بالرغم من علمي بأن هنالك من يحيد عنها ، ولكن كان بإنتظاري علاقة أخوين مريعة...يُغذيها حقد..كراهية...قسوة ، رغبة مُلحة في الانتقام..صراع بائس...التنافس على البقاء وإن كانا أشباه أحياء ، وبالرغم من أنه يتداعى كل منهما في اللاوجود للاحتضار قبل الموت إلا إنهما يكيلا لبعضهما خصومة شيطانية ، ويتقاذفا بالأكاذيب والأوهام....
بنهاية المطاف تجهل ما كانت عليه حقيقتهما....
ببراعة حاذقة كلاهما يُدمر رابطة مُقدسة...فريدة لا تُعرّف بالحب ولا بالكراهية ، هى تُعرّف نفسها بنفسها..، رابطة لا يمكن أن ينفك حبلها السري اللامرئي الذي يربط اثنين معاً يجري بعروقهما الدماء ذاتها...قد يتشاركا نبضة قلب في حياتهما ..وإن كانت نبضة وحيدة ولكن لابد وأنهما سيفعلا لامحال...
هنا...حلاوة انتصار زائف يشوبها مرارة هزيمة فادحة....
وأخيراً... إنني بحاجة لقراءة مُبهجة..تنتشلني من حفرة الخذلان 😏...

Egy nő megtartja szokásos, senkit sem érdeklő előadását kedves keresztény szentjeiről valami világvégi észak-svéd faluban. Ideiglenes szállása bizonyos Hadar még világvégibb tanyáján van, ahol szándéka szerint egyetlen éjszakát töltene el - ám a hó betakarja a tájat, a nő pedig ott ragad. Aztán egy idő után már úgy fest, nem is a hó tartja ott - hanem a két fivér, Hadar és Olof évtizedes viszálya, ami úgy tekeredik rá, mint a pókháló. Mindketten halálukon vannak, de egyik sem akar a másik előtt távozni, életben tartja őket az egymás iránt érzett gyűlölet, a néma háború, amibe egyre inkább bevonják vendégüket. Ráborítják sérelmeiket, egymásnak ellentmondó igazságaikat, körbeszövik vele a kívülállót. Egy szürreális purgatórium ez, ahol Harald és Olof a keresztény mártír-szentek beteg karikatúrája: az önsanyargatásig elutasítják az életet, és mindezt azzal igazolják, hogy ellenállnak a gonosznak - a gonosznak, amit egymásban ismernek fel.
Sötét remekmű ez a kötet - Lindgren kérlelhetetlen következetességgel építi fel azt az abszurd és élhetetlen teret, ami két ember kölcsönös gyűlölködéséből született. És egyben azt is, hogy ez a gyűlölködés hogyan ragadja magához a harmadik fél tudatát. Lombját vesztett fa az ilyen szöveg - nincs rajta semmi zöld, ami a szemet megnyugtatja, de göcsörtös ágbogai mégis valahogy lenyűgöznek.
Sötét remekmű ez a kötet - Lindgren kérlelhetetlen következetességgel építi fel azt az abszurd és élhetetlen teret, ami két ember kölcsönös gyűlölködéséből született. És egyben azt is, hogy ez a gyűlölködés hogyan ragadja magához a harmadik fél tudatát. Lombját vesztett fa az ilyen szöveg - nincs rajta semmi zöld, ami a szemet megnyugtatja, de göcsörtös ágbogai mégis valahogy lenyűgöznek.

رواية قصيرة جداً تقع في 137 صفحة وتاتي على لسان أمرأة تقدم محاضرات حول حياة القديسين وبينما هي في بلدة ما وتحاضر الجموع هناك كان من بينهم رجلاً كبير في السن جالساً في ركن وكأنه في غفوه قصيرة وما ان انفض الجمع بعد ان فرغت من محاضرتها خاطبها ذلك العجوز وأخبرها بانها ستبيت في منزله! أما هي فوجدت هذا العرض مغرياً لها ويوفر عليها تبديد بعض النقود للسكن المؤقت قبل عودتها للديار.

تسكن بطلتنا العلية في منزل العجوز أولف الذي كان وحيداً ولم تُخالف الغرفة التي خصصها لها رغم حالتها الرثة !! ووجدت فكرة إتمامها للكتاب الذي تقوم بتأليفه فكرة مجدية خلال الوقت الذي ستمضيه في هذا السكن المؤقت.

تكتشف المرأة بأن العجوز أولف مريض بالقلب ولديه شقيق يُدعى هاردر يعيش في مقربة من كوخه وهو مصاب بالسرطان ! والاثنان متخاصمان منذ فترة طويلة بل وكل شخص منهم يتمنى موت الآخر قبله!! فلماذا تلك العداوة بينهما؟! وهل ستتدخل بطلتنا في حل هذا الخلاف ام لا؟! وكيف ستنتهي الحكاية؟! .
كل ذلك ستتعرف عليه من خلال قراءتك للرواية .

رغم ما تحمله الرواية من فلسفة حياتيه تجاه الإنشقاق بين الأشقاء وأختلافهم وهم في أسوء حالاتهم الصحية الا انني وجدت الرواية ضعيفة في ملء ما يلزم من جوانب إنسانية.

أعجبتني مقتطفات عديدة كانت تاتي على لسان المرأة وهي تحلل ما تراه وتدونه ضمن كتابها الذي تؤلفه.

Я вже не раз згадувала про свою прихильність до скандинавської літератури. Торґні Ліндґрен до цієї любові додав свою вагому частку.
Відразу попереджу тих, хто вирішить прочитати роман: він місцями аж занадто натуралістичний - маю на увазі те, що навіть у мене, негидливої, в певний момент виникла нудода, таким огидним було те, що відбувалося. Хоча, власне, чого я очікувала від книги, в якій описується вмирання двох братів. Смерть хіба може бути прекрасною?
А от книга - може, навіть якщо розказує про огидні речі. А саме такими були і стосунки, і вчинки братів, котрі ненавиділи один одного настільки, що навіть смертельно хворі не могли померти, аби не дати іншому пережити себе. Все їхнє життя, їхні потаємні почуття, їхні любов і ненависть постають перед читачем потрошку, по реченню, по абзацу, по дню. Так само їх бачить і пізнає головна (нібито) героїня - письменниця, яка випадково застрягла на маленькому хуторі, що на півночі Швеції. Книга, котру вона пише, стає ще однією історією про самотнього чоловіка, який шукав себе у цьому світі й так відрізнявся від нього, що його вважали чудотворцем. А от чи знайшла те, що шукала, жінка, яка взяла на себе відповідальність за прийняття рішення про смерть братів, так і лишилося невідомим.
Відразу попереджу тих, хто вирішить прочитати роман: він місцями аж занадто натуралістичний - маю на увазі те, що навіть у мене, негидливої, в певний момент виникла нудода, таким огидним було те, що відбувалося. Хоча, власне, чого я очікувала від книги, в якій описується вмирання двох братів. Смерть хіба може бути прекрасною?
А от книга - може, навіть якщо розказує про огидні речі. А саме такими були і стосунки, і вчинки братів, котрі ненавиділи один одного настільки, що навіть смертельно хворі не могли померти, аби не дати іншому пережити себе. Все їхнє життя, їхні потаємні почуття, їхні любов і ненависть постають перед читачем потрошку, по реченню, по абзацу, по дню. Так само їх бачить і пізнає головна (нібито) героїня - письменниця, яка випадково застрягла на маленькому хуторі, що на півночі Швеції. Книга, котру вона пише, стає ще однією історією про самотнього чоловіка, який шукав себе у цьому світі й так відрізнявся від нього, що його вважали чудотворцем. А от чи знайшла те, що шукала, жінка, яка взяла на себе відповідальність за прийняття рішення про смерть братів, так і лишилося невідомим.

I picked this book up randomly from a mall kiosk selling used books. Definitely one of my better impulse buys. I found that this book almost had a fable-type aspect to it and I enjoyed that part of it very much. It is about two estranged brothers, both sick, but with polar opposite symptoms. The main character is a female lecturer trapped because of a snowstorm. She visits both brothers and they each tell their own version of their feud and the story of the woman that they both loved. I don't normally re-read books, but this is one that I would like to read again. It seemed to me so rich with meaning that I am sure I missed things in my first reading.

Språket, västebottniskan! Utan att jag visste det var detta sommarboken jag behövde. Mycket intressant berättarperspektiv om hur en kvinnlig sörlänning kommer till västerbottens inland och möter två döende bröders ömsesidiga hat mot varandra. Hon vårdar deras krämpor och får ta del av deras gemensamma men samtidigt delade historia.
”Att giva sig härifrån, det har för hans del alltid varit sig samma som döden.
Den som giver sig av ska till sist också återkomma, och det är sannolikt det värsta, åtskilligt värre än det var att giva sig av, han som återvänder har ingenting annat med sig än missräkningar och ånger och grämelse och förkrosselse. ”

التقطت، من مكتبتي، كتابًا اشتريته منذ فترة، كنت قد اخترتُ الكتاب نفسه ذات مرة كهديّة دون أن أقرأه. وحين كنت مع صديق في المكتبة، ومررنا بهذا الكتاب، شجعني على اقتنائه؛ كان الأمر مستهجنًا بالنسبة لي: كتاب اشتريت نسخة منه سابقًا من أجل شخص آخر، وفلماذا أقتنيه مجددًا من أجلي؛ ما الذي يمنحه كل هذه الحفاوة، العمياء، مني؟

Har tidigare läst Ormens väg på Hälleberget, som jag älskade, och nu efter att ha läst den här får jag nog betrakta Torgny Lindgren som en av mina favoritförfattare.
Det här är en berättelse på två nivåer, dels en konkret nivå, icke förutsägbar, med komplexa karaktärer skriven med en stor portion humor men med svärta i botten. Samtidigt lämnar författaren mycket utrymme åt läsaren för egna tolkningar av paradoxer och bibliska referenser. Kontexten är norrländsk, inte genom naturbeskrivningar utan språk och kultur.
Det handlar om två bröder, Olof och Hadar, samt en kvinnlig författare. Hon skriver om ett helgon, och tycks på samma gång vara det själv. Bröderna i sin tur tolkar jag som representanter för den stridslystna människan, i all sin ofullkomlighet och konkreta kroppslighet. De kan också stå som metaforer för öst- och västtyskland. Till skillnad från helgonet beskrivs bröderna som äckliga med vätskor och lukter, begär och behov, som fastnat i en meningslös fejd som de båda förlorar på. Jag utläser något slags påbud om moralfilosofisk dygd. Som Aristoteles sa, dygden väljer mellanvägen. Det gäller att inte äta för mycket, eller för lite. Den ena brodern föredrar det salta fläsket och den andra äter bara sötsaker. Författaren är slutligen den som hjälper bröderna få frid, när de(ras kroppar) dör.
Ur feministiskt synvinkel är det en traditionellt stereotyp bild vi får med kroppsliga män och idealiserade kvinnor. Två snuskiga gubbar är huvudpersoner, de tar form som två komplexa karaktärer vars livsdrifter är hatet och fejden dem emellan. Kvinnan som är namnlös, fungerar som ett bollplank utan egen agens. Hon är omhändertagande och på något sätt upphöjd, en slags madonna kanske. Här finns också en "hora". Kvinnan som ligger med båda bröderna, kanske då de båda tillsammans bildar vad vi önskar i en människa, men inte var för sig.
Jag lyssnade på Lindgrens egen inläsning vilket förhöjde upplevelse.

Hummelhonung was a pretty weird book. In short, the book is about a female writer who, by happenstance, spends the night at an old man's house in the northern parts of Sweden. As a result of snow (and the house being inaccessible and away from society), she is then forced to stay there for a while. The old man is sick with cancer, and has a brother who lives nearby who is also dying from a heart disease. The only thing keeping them alive is the desire to outlive (and thereby defeat) their brother who they hate intensely. Needless to say, "brotherly love" is not an apt way to describe their relationship.
The writer, who is an anonymous character which we know next to nothing about, primarily functions as a catalyst between the brothers, and we get to experience the brother's story through her. The story is in many ways creepy and disgusting, but also intriguing. The brothers are characterised by their respective love for salty and sweet food, respectively. This becomes a weird (and often gross), theme of the book.
Overall however, I found it original, interesting and intriguing, and I kept wanting to read to see what would happen (spoiler alert: not much - but enough). I liked the language of Torgny Lindgren and how he weaved the story. Overall, I enjoyed his style of writing, and I feel quite certain that I will pick up some of his other books in the future.

Novelka o dvou bratrech, jejichž vztah je víc než čímkoliv jiným poznamenán rivalitou, do té míry, že i smrti vzdorují zuby nehty jen proto, aby přežili toho druhého. Do posledních týdnů a dnů jejich života se přichomýtne žena a spolu s ní čtenář odkrývá bídu nemocných těl i duší obou mužů a krůček po krůčku i příčinu jejich stavu. Příběh je to krátký jako zimní den a mrazivý jako zimní noc. A jako zimní noc i krásný.

A nameless travelling lecturer arrives at a very small town in rural Northern Sweden. She is writing a book and lecturing about Saint Christopher, one of the wandering Holy Fools, who roamed the country in medieval times selflessly caring for the diseased and afflicted. The lecture ends, and rather than go to a small hotel reserved for her, she accepts the invitation of a random man from the audience to spend the night at his home. Her plan is to stay the night and leave the next morning.
As they drive through the falling snow the chilling and fable-like atmosphere clutches at you and doesn’t let go until the very end of this short novel.
Days turn into weeks, weeks into months and the nameless lecturer becomes immersed in the story of her host and his brother, his sworn enemy. The feuding brothers live in proximity to each other, are practically on their death beds, and have not spoken to nor seen each other, for decades. They are isolated from the world, each of them self-sufficient and alone with no connections other than to each other. Despite their decades long feud they are each other’s sole reason for living, albeit a bitter and twisted reason.
As she becomes more and more involved in their life story, the woman transforms from an observer of the two to an active participant and an agent of movement in this perpetual still-life of theirs. She continues to write her book about Saint Christopher, gradually inserting into the margins notes relating to the brothers as their story opens up to her. These notes will take over, filling her notebook and her thoughts, and at some point it seems that she is no longer writing of her saint; she is writing the story of these two contentious brothers.
All of this takes place in a timeless present with no sense of the passage of time or of anything existing outside the confined existence of the brothers and the nameless woman.
She writes of Saint Christopher’s obsession with his deeds, an obsession that cannot be explicated in ethical or moral terms; neither can her obsession with the brothers. She writes of Saint Christopher’s rootless and homeless existence; she too has no home, and no human relationships. Conversely, the brothers, despite their solitary existence, are deeply rooted in their natural surroundings, in their familial history, and in each other.
This is a story of contradictions that are cyclical rather than antagonistic to the point that they cease to be contradictions and become similarities. In the convoluted relationship of these seemingly opposing siblings, we begin to doubt if there is a clear demarcation line between them, or if perhaps they are an extension one of the other.
Their story, separate and joint, is throughout weighted by a shifting reality. In this novel, nothing in the realm of memory and of perceived reality is stable or fixed. It’s all contingent upon perspective. Even the one major event that has forever scarred the brothers’ lives and is crystal clear to each one of them, remains ambiguous to us and to the woman.
The beauty of the novel is in its light atmospheric touch in dealing with the most laden of issues.

Era un paesaggio in cui la luce del mattino disponeva di tutto lo spazio necessario.
Torgny Lindgren non è molto popolare nel nostro Paese, che ha scoperto la letteratura del nord Europa solo di recente.
Ma “Miele”, è un altro piccolo gioiello di questo autore.
Una scrittrice, di cui non si saprà mai né nome, né sembianze, gira la Svezia per tenere conferenze sulle vite dei santi. Nel suo girovagare, finisce in uno sperduto villaggio nel nord di quel Paese, e un vecchio si offre di ospitarla in casa sua.
È malato, in procinto di morire. E odia suo fratello, anche lui prossimo alla morte, che abita una casa poco lontano dalla sua; e da costui ricambiato della stessa moneta.
In questo paesaggio statico, dove ciascuno dei due attende che sia l’altro a tirare le cuoia per primo, la donna è l’unico elemento che crea azione, e turba. Invece di andarsene, resta; perché durante la notte nevica, certo. Ma anche quando lo spazzaneve libererà la strada, lei sceglierà di rimanere.
Nei libri di Lindgren l’azione è affidata alla parola, alla riflessione; nessuno viaggia o compie imprese spericolate, o memorabili. Di fatto, l’unico movimento che si registra in questo libro, è l’andirivieni della donna da un’abitazione, all’altra. E poi ve ne è un altro.
Si alza il coperchio, e si scopre che cosa c’è stato nel passato di questi due uomini, che cosa li ha condotti a odiarsi con tanta, cortese determinazione.
“Miele” è ottimo per chi è a caccia di una storia in apparenza banale, dove tutto si consuma nei dialoghi, e in stanze dove a parte il suono della voce dei protagonisti, non accade altro. La forza della parola, la sua capacità di svelare, senza artifici o trucchi di sorta. Sembra facile, ma questo è un lavoro che riesce solo a pochi, grandi autori.

Čmelí med som čítala po druhýkrát. V naozaj nie veľmi dobrom preklade Milana Žitného knihu v slovenskom preklade vydalo malé slovenské vydavateľstvo v roku 1997.
Kniha o nezmieriteľnosti, rivalite a nenávisti medzi dvoma bratmi je znásobená prostredím, v ktorom sa odohráva, bezútešnosťou a zdánlivou nekonečnosťou zimy a opustenej časti severného Švédska, kam sa aj snežný pluh dostane iba raz za čas.
Obaja bratia čakajú na smrť toho druhého, pritom vo svojom vnútri sú mŕtvi už dávno. Sú tak rozdielni a pritom rovnakí, ako len dvaja súrodenci môžu byť. Žiarlia na seba, závidia si a nahovárajú si, že jeden je lepší, ako ten druhí. Ich celoživotná nevraživosť zničí aj dvoch ľudí, ktorí stoja medzi nimi.
Kniha šokuje svojou explicitnosťou a uchvacuje spôsobom rozprávania a témou, či minimalistickosťou, akým je tento krutý príbeh vyrozprávaní.

Imaginative and interesting as a concept, yet I ended up feeling like it went on for far too long (and it was only 160-something pages!). Maybe this is due to the fact that the characters never become more human, only more and more like grotesque legends. The salt brother and the sweet brother, after a life spent to try and spite the other, are now both dying but struggling to outlive the other. Their albino woman who gets taken by the sun, the grandfather collecting honey, the ditch/wall they were digging between their houses, the dark northern winter. There might be wisdom and metaphor under all of this. Maybe I'll see it if I reread it again some day.

This deserves 3.5 stars. Sweetness is a good novel but ranks half a notch below other Lindgren books I've read. Here, Lindgren touches more on the grotesque than he usually does, and his fans will find it a must-read. However, I wouldn't recommend it as someone's first Lindgren book. Much better to start with Hash or the Merab's Beauty story collection.

Oj så speciell! Först är jag tveksam, sedan blir jag förförd. Äcklig och skrämmande och konstig, men ändå med något slags kärleksbudskap.
