Review provided by Black Lagoon Reviews:

Spooky, suspenseful and highly entertaining, Mojo by Kris Sedersten was a fast paced ghost story that kept me reading late into the night and left me wanting more. Tautly written and highly developed this novel had me enthralled from the first word to the last.

The world Sedersten created is perfectly suited to Louisiana, the swampy settings paired with out of the way locales allowed for a down home yet creepy feeling to saturate the story. Where better then to imagine voodoo, ghosts and demonic rites coming together? The settings are perfectly described setting the ghostly ambiance and the clever writing makes even the most mundane of objects suspect. From the Christine-like haunting of a vehicle to a dilapidated southern plantation there is never a lack of the supernatural to keep one on their toes!

The characters are all interesting, highly developed and each add to the story with their 'special' skills. Yet, it is the friendship that binds them that is most intriguing, each putting their lives on the line for a friend in need. Scottie's earnest emotions add a lot to tale. From his obvious desperation at the unbelievable situation he finds himself in to the relief that his friends not only help him without question but actually believe him is touching. His unknown heritage to the evil Benet family is highly developed and the way that its introduced into the plot makes it extremely relevant to the story and to the characters involved. Instead of simply dumping the information as fact, Sedersten incorporates it adding to the suspense and mystery of the novel progressing the atmosphere and characterization. However, the character that most stole my heart was Mojo. While we don't see this gentle monster for more then a few minutes, his kindness and utter innocence despite his parentage and plight tug at the reader's heart strings. I loved the emotional appeal that was used to connect this obviously awkward character to the readers and I think it helped to contrast against the darker themes of the novel. But, it's not only the corporeal characters that were well captured. The haunting, disfigured apparition that stalks Scottie adds mystery to the tale as we come to get to know who the shadowed figure is and his ties to the Benet family. Likewise, the patriarch Jean Benet is well captured despite not being more then a shadow for much of the story. His dark apparition is at once menacing and filled with hate and anger the permeates the tone of the novel and adds that dash of evil malevolence that stains his soul.

The story is fast paced and well written. I loved the subtle details that the author was able to capture and the style of the writing. While filled with information, nothing ever seems frivolous. Instead it all is relevant and needed, the tidbits dropping at intervals to keep the pace of the plot and the suspense coming. There is a nice descriptive quality to the writing that points to wonderful story telling paired with nice development of the plot and the history that is based upon. While most ghost hunting tales have some lag, this novel never really experiences that. Instead the reader is catapulted from one mystery and horror to the next. There is also a nice sense of closure to the novel as well, all the loose ends referenced and brought back to light, most notably Scottie's haunted truck. Most authors would have let the matter drop and revisited it later in another novel, but Sedersten reminds the reader that we have received little information about this and it only adds to the promise of more to come. Not to mention the wonderful cliff hanger that is only to be expected when such evil takes form in the mortal realm.

In the end, my only complaints about the novel was the dialogue. It seemed at odds with the youthful twenty somethings often coming off as a little stiff and formal. While this isn't a large issue, it still had me stopping at varying points throughout trying to connect the speech to the characters that I had envisioned. It tends to throw off the flow, but not devastatingly so. Also, there is a little repetition between thoughts and speech that got a little tiresome, but again, this is a small issue that didn't happen too often and didn't detract from the over all story telling.

Overall, this was definitely a unique and enjoyable read! I can really envision this as one of those wonderful original telefilms on the SyFy channel, which made this all the more wonderful for me to read (I love those movies!). Nicely written with a wonderfully quick suspenseful plot, I recommend this to anyone who loves a good ghost story. Definitely a new author I will be keeping an eye on.

When you've got time to curl up on the sofa and remain uninterrupted for awhile, pick up Kris Sedersten's new book, Mojo - a mystery-thriller with mind-griping paranormal overtones. In "good versus evil" thrillers, Mojo is one that you won't want to put down until you turn that very last page - and you might discover that you've been holding your breath for awhile.

Scottie Brown is haunted by disturbing nightmares, and even glimpses apparitions when the sun is out. Scottie feels that he must find answers for these tormenting visions and begins the experience of a lifetime. Set in the mojo-city of New Orleans and a haunted, Louisiana plantation, this fast-paced paranormal mystery-thriller contains dark family secrets, unholy prophecies and what might result in a deadly outcome for everyone on Earth.

Sedersten weaves a tale that demonstrates to readers that having faith in a greater power can lead us safely through the worst nightmares - real or unreal. Scottie is a college student in New Orleans who brings in a team of paranormal investigators, friends and a psychic medium to help him research his deceased ancestors and soon discovers deadly secrets and obstacles that could change his life drastically.

Readers who love a great ghost story will love every ghost and ghoul in Mojo - an action-packed tale of the spiritual world that will make your hair stand on end. The media today is full of movies and books that regale stories of the paranormal and many are difficult to believe, but Sedersten combines reality with the afterlife in a way that's totally believable. That's what makes it so scary.

One reason that Sedersten became fascinated by the paranormal was the video, "Haunted Nebraska," which was produced by the Midwest Paranormal group. The video was based on actual paranormal evidence caught on tape and that contained strange noises and unexplained shadows. "Haunted Nebraska" chronicles a real event and mystery that remains unsolved.

Sedersten became enthralled with the idea of writing a story that involved making contact with a ghost or spirit who has transitioned to the other side. She found it disturbing, but strangely comforting at the same time. Sedersten's research led her to a creative surge that resulted in writing the book, Mojo.

Mojo has more twists and turns than the streets of New Orleans. There is a spiritual message, but the book never becomes "preachy." Sedersten presents her ghosts and ghouls descriptively and believably and all of her characters (including the spooks) become very much alive on the pages. As you follow Scottie and his team in his quest to solve the puzzle, you certainly won't be bored and you'll want to know more about this author and her future books when you turn the final page.

Please note: The opinions shared below are just that, my opinions. In no way are my comments meant to insult Mrs. Sedersten or her talent. I am just a reader sharing thoughts on a book which was provided, by the author, in return for an honest review. It’s with that agreement in mind that I have shared my views here and attempted to be as kind, yet completely honest, as possible. Regardless of my level of enjoyment, Kris Sedersten has poured her heart and soul into this creation and for that I have the utmost respect and admiration for her.

Mojo by Kris Sedersten was not at all what I had expected. I found this story riddled with a juvenile dialect more befitting young teenagers in high school than the typical college-aged adults and, unfortunately, this verbiage interfered with the believability of the characters. However, while this tale was tiresome at times, at others I found myself utterly and horrifically TERRIFIED! In fact, I became so creeped out that I had to set this story aside for a few days and read something a bit lighter.

Now, the above is not to say that there isn’t a brilliant story here. There is plenty of suspense, creepy characters, and a unique family lore that kept me intrigued enough to continue. And, to be fair, I haven’t been “college-aged” in several years and I’ve never lived in New Orleans or Nebraska so my opinion of the language used may be off the mark. It’s just that I felt the immaturity of the conversation and repetition of such words and/or phrases as “Dude!”, “Baby” and “No Way, Dude!” is rather distracting and very much takes away from the overall reading experience.

Sedersten shares a unique view of Ghost Hunters in that their belief in the devilishly horrible and supernatural is balanced with a great respect for a higher power. For this particular reader, this balance is a new concept and one which seemed a perfect fit for Mojo.

As mentioned previously, I do believe there is a brilliant story here. Mojo is full of suspense, spine-tingling encounters, and gruesome events. Unfortunately, I felt there was such an excess of unnecessary information that it intruded upon the story and detracted from thorough enjoyment.

Although it’s apparent that Kris Sedersten is not yet a truly accomplished writer, Mojo shows us a glimpse of what Sedersten is capable of. I truly believe that she has huge potential and a very bright future! A future so promising that, despite the issues I found with Mojo, I can’t wait to experience what Kris has in store for us next.

THOUGHTS/OPINION:

I thought the plot was excellent the story was interesting enough to hold my attention. I enjoyed learning the twists and turns the story was taking. Had the characters had more growth to them I might have really enjoyed it. I felt at times we were feed too much information. Almost too easily like when Scottie discovers who his real father was it was almost too easy to figure out. Not to mention that his mother knew all along what his father was involved with so there was no great mystery behind it. And just in case so did Scottie's best friend from simply reading the paper. I almost was annoyed that EVERYONE but him knew who his father was when it was that simple to figure out. I think that this was a good first novel and I can't wait to read the next.

THINGS I LIKED:

- I liked the culture that was brought in. Scottie had a mixed racial heritage and so did his girlfriend. Not to mention the story takes place in New Orleans which was a nice mix and brought in more heritage and culture. It was refreshing.

- I liked the magic, plot and world building. While I felt somethings were too easy and fit too nicely I did find other twists and turns to be exciting.

- I enjoyed the ghost hunting and Nebraska scenes (of course I'm from Kansas so I would've preferred they had been here but hey I'll take whatever shout out I can *wink*)

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:

- As mentioned above it felt at times that everything was too neatly explained or wrapped up.

- Not enough character growth I could never really connect with anyone character or even get to the point where I felt invested.

Would you recommend this book? Yes I think that this was a good book and while somethings didn't work for me it doesn't mean they wouldn't work for others.

Kris Sedersten's first foray into publishing is with the psychological thriller Mojo. Published in 2010, it follows Scottie Brown, a New Orleans college student who, after being hunted by vivid nightmares and daytime apparitions begins searching for an answer; unwittingly putting himself and those closest to him in a confrontation with evil.

To defeat the energy that torments him, he recruits a team of paranormal investigators, friends from high school, and a psychic medium. Together, they pursue the ghost of Scottie's ancestors in a haunted plantation deep in the Louisiana countryside. They uncover dark family secrets and the spiritual energy of a malevolent patriarch who projects an unholy prophecy that has deadly consequences for all mankind.

After reading the blurb I was initially dubious about the plot of the book, but as always gave it a go, and was pleasantly suprised. The plot works well and is full of suspense, and the characters, especially Aimee, were well thought out and reacted believably to plot events. Scottie, the main character, develops throughout the novel, starting as a somewhat selfish and immature individual but growing into a somewhat more thoughtful, mature person.

Overall, it is a horror filled, enjoyable read, which grabs you, and makes you want to keep reading till the end. My only criticism is that some of the dialogue was just a little off for me, almost clumsy in places; something that is hard to explain, and does not significantly affect the experience of reading Mojo.

"They say that shadows of deceased ghosts, Do haunt the houses and the graves about, Of such whose life's lamp went untimely out, Delighting still in their forsaken hosts." - Joshua Sylvester

whether asleep or awake, Scottie Brown is haunted by malevolent spirits and apparitions. as the hauntings progress and turn life-threatening, he finally seeks help. together with his friends from high school and a medium, Scottie travels deep into the Louisiana countryside where his ancestors' plantation holds the answers.
i seldom get goosebumps when reading horror stories but this book was another exception. from the get-go, i was caught up in the bizarre on-goings and i could not help but feel disturbed by how Scottie manages to deal with everything taking place around him. the line between the physical and spiritual realms is non-existent in his life. i could not imagine what it is like to be in Scottie's company. even people around him are not exempt from witnessing and experiencing what he does. that was what really creeped me out.
there are unexpected twists and surprises along the way particularly towards the latter part of the book. despite the dark themes and hair-raising details, one specific revelation tugged at my heart.
author Kris Sedersten's foray into the sphere of troubled souls, vengeful spirits, psychic phenomena and dark family histories is downright chilling and creepy. this is a book that should never be read without the lights on, without locking the doors and windows first, if there is a storm raging outside and especially not before bedtime.
simply follow what i did not do myself and you will get through this page-turner just fine.

Mojo is a mystery-horror book. I started reading this book around eleven in the evening Friday and when I was halfway thru I realized that it was already three in the morning, Saturday and I was alone in the living room! I couldn't put down the book because it was sooo good. I finished reading this book just before sunrise and wow, I enjoyed it a lot!

I loved the plot and the suspense, definitely a "wow" for me. The story was amazing and I liked how the author wove the story. I'm still thinking of the story a few days later.

As for the characters, oh well, I liked the secondary characters - Jesse and Cee better than the main character Scottie Brown and his girl friend, Aimee. Those times I stopped reading were mainly because I was irritated with Scottie's attitude and poor dialogue. I did enjoy Jesse's and Cee's adventure with the ghosts. I loved it when they were together and wished they were the main characters instead.

Lovers of scary/horror stories will surely enjoy this book. If you want a great horror book that you couldn't put down, you might want to pick this up and you definitely won't be disappointed.

A Lady's man all his life, Scottie finds one attraction in his life he could do with out. The odd dreams and unexplained events he has been dealing with have come to a peak and now his girlfriend is involved. He has also called old friends from his Nebraska days to come help figure out the link to his family history and the events of paranormal in his life. There has to be a reason for the odd events with his big black truck, those darn rearview window 'decorations' just won't go away and were did all that blood come from?

A trip back to the old plantation in New Orleans owned by his fathers side of the family finds Scottie and his friends deeply entombed in the tunnels under the old house and in family history. A legacy no one wants to have hanging of their head. Evil is a man and he is Scotties family.

However, Evil has a competitor and it's shrouding 'Mojo', a secret family history that provides the strongest protection in the fight of good vs, evil .

This story kept me up late at night and reading as fast as I could. Great thriller with twists you don't expect and an ending that makes your heart thump.

This Book is a THRILLER! I loved it. I devoured this book in the wee hours of Friday night/Saturday morning.
I couldn't put it down.
The characters are SO believable and down to earth you feel as if they are your friends or friends of a friend.
You follow Scottie through his crazy journey of being haunted and hunted by ghosts who end up being relatives of his. This book takes you through religion, cults, paranormal activity, humor and love.
The best part of this book is that it kept me guessing. You know how when you are reading a book most times you know who the villain is before they say? Well, this book I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen but I didn't.
Well written book that is well worth your time and best of all it looks as if there may be another book coming out! At least, the ending suggests it. I sure hope so!
I'm putting Kris Sedersten on my Authors to Watch list and I will be watching for a Mojo Part 2!
If you don't have Mojo on your bookshelf yet, GO GET IT.

I really liked the plot of this story but the dialogue was not the greatest. I didn't really connect with any of the characters as much as I would have liked . I had no problem putting the book down for long periods of time. It didn't grab me like I was hoping it would have. It wasn't a horrible read though. The main plot of the story was extremely interesting. I loved Kris's view on what the Ghost Hunter's go through. The story was faced paced and was exciting from the first page to the last. Kris has great ideas that flow nicely together I just don't think she gave enough time to let us get to know her characters. You can tell that Kris is not seasoned but I truly believe she has great potential. Like I said I loved the story and the plot, the dialogue put me off a little bit and I wasn't connected to the Characters but I am honestly looking forward to the second book. I need to know what happens to Scottie and the rest of the Ghost Hunter's.

I give this a 3/5

Creepy...just overall, really creepy. Sedersten doesn’t wait to get into the terrifying action, jumping right in and having us meet Scottie and experience a nightmare with him right away. We get the impression that these episodes have been going on for a quite a while, and increasing in frequency, so I think that we come into the action at just the right time-I would have been annoyed to read a hundred pages of buildup, but we definitely don’t get that with Mojo. Right away, we’re meeting Scottie and weird things are happening...and quickly escalating. I really liked the description of the mansion, too...it was like something off of a movie set or a freaky Halloween haunted house. Definitely stuck with me, even after reading the book. Great, but not for the easily scared.

One of the things that I liked most about this novel was watching the character development of Scottie, who changed a great deal over the course of the novel, almost to the point of seeming like an entirely different person by the end of the book. It’s been a while since I’ve seen such a prominent change in a character-though I guess that considering the creepy things Scottie has to endure, it’s not all that surprising that he became a little less selfish by the end of the book. Sedersten definitely did a great job with this one, making sure that neither character nor plot was shortchanged as Scottie fights against forces that have been terrorizing him for some time.

I picked up Mojo expecting to read a horror novel, but was actually pleasantly surprised by the ample amount of life that had been breathed into the characters. And don’t get me wrong, there was definitely enough “scary” in the book for me. In this thriller-turned-bildungsroman, we witness a coming-of-age of Scottie; unfortunately for him, that coming of age is propelled by fighting dark forces that seek to continue their dominance in his life-potentially by ending it. A grandfather seeking immortality from beyond the grave is just one of the characters at work in this novel-I don’t want to give it all away, so you’ll have to read the book itself to find out more!

Wow, I won't lie. I went against my better judgement and read this late at night. Let's just say I slept with the light on that night. LOL!! If you want spine tingling read this book. The author does such a great job that I felt like I was there feeling what the characters were feeling, seeing what they were seeing. There were many times when my heart was pounding waiting for what was going to happen next. This is a very dark book but it has a lot of different elements to it. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in the supernatural.

Scottie Brown has long struggled to come to terms with his identity as a person, but when he finds out that his family has secrets that have come back to haunt him-literally-he is propelled to take action to save his own life. However, Kris’s voice managed to shine through and her plot kept me guessing at what would happen next. In this bewitching tale of ghosts, mystery and faith, the reader watches a boy as he goes through the terrifying experiences that ultimately turn him into a man. Overall, a great read!

Consider this your warning: read this in broad daylight, because if you don’t you’ll be looking over your shoulder at every sound around you, waiting to see something jump out of the shadows. If you love stories that are packed with action but definitely keep you guessing at what creepy thing is going to happen next, this is the book for you. If creepy images don’t keep you up at night, the anticipation of trying to guess what’s going to happen next will do the trick. A great thriller.

Scottie was such a great character...I felt like he could have been a friend that I knew in real life. This book was scary, but not too bad-it’s definitely not for people who get easily scared though! The mansion was awesome, and sounded like a place that I wanted to go in real life to investigate things for myself.
