BookPage calls Katherine Center “the reigning queen of comfort reads.” She’s the New York Times bestselling author of eleven novels, including The Bodyguard, Hello Stranger, Things You Save in a Fire, and her summer 2024 book, The Rom-Commers. Katherine writes laugh-and-cry books: bittersweet romantic comedies about how life knocks us down—and how we get back up. She’s been compared to both Jane Austen and Nora Ephron, and the Dallas Morning News calls her stories, “satisfying in the most soul-nourishing way.” The Netflix movie adaptation of her novel Happiness for Beginners—starring Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes—just hit the Global Top Ten in 81 countries, and the mov

I haven't thought about doing a sequel for those two specifically, but I HAVE thought about writing a story for Duncan! I kind of fell in love with Duncan while I was writing that story (I originally thought he'd be a very minor character, but he was just so hilarious and frustrating and sweet and goofy that I couldn't resist him). I'd love to see what he's up to these days!! :) (less)

You are very kind! Thank you! The short answer to your question is: Yes! I am lucky to be married to a guy who is possibly the funniest person ever, and we joke around constantly--just teasing each other and cracking jokes and bantering. Of all the different elements of a story, dialogue is by far the easiest for me to write. Once I've spent even just a few minutes with the characters in whatever situation they're in, I just start to "hear" them talking. It really just happens on its own. It's like taking dictation. They talk, and I type what they say. Not every aspect of writing is that easy for me. I work much harder—in a way that actually feels like work—on the overall structure of the story and the character arcs and figuring out how the storylines build, and play off each other, and intersect. But the dialogue? It just kind of happens like magic, and getting to write it is one of the great joys in my life. :)(less)

“When you don't know what to do for yourself, do something for somebody else.”
Katherine Center, How to Walk Away

“Choosing to love—despite all the ways that people let you down, and disappear, and break your heart. Knowing everything we know about how hard life is and choosing to love, anyway.. That’s not weakness, that’s courage.”
Katherine Center, Things You Save in a Fire
