I live in New Brunswick, Canada. As a writer, I worked in radio forever (a very long time indeed) then moved to the Internet, where I also worked forever (another very long time). However, I prefer writing fiction and have been doing it from the time I learned to write. I've written two novels previously, both characterized by an absence of redeeming qualities, and I'm currently engaged on a third.

It will likely fall into the soft science fiction category though I'm not trying to write sci-fi. It involves a disgraced journalist and a self-programming AI system that manages the planet. Of course, by the time I finish it could be a western about a cattle drive.(less)

That Christmas Eve

I sometimes wonder how they came to be ghosts. We’ve had them every Christmas Eve since we moved in, almost fourteen years now. I have no idea who they are, or who they were, but they’re always here for Christmas night. It’s a big brick house, Second Empire style, on …

“Loneliness is the single biggest cause of shitty lives.”
William Wren

“Brevity takes time.”
W.L. Wren

“I admire writers who can make complicated things simple, but my own talent has been to make simple things complicated.”
John Barth

“In art as in lovemaking, heartfelt ineptitude has its appeal and so does heartless skill, but what you want is passionate virtuosity.”
John Barth

“He dug so deeply into her sentiments that in search of interest he found love, because by trying to make her love him he ended up falling in love with her. Petra Cotes, for her part, loved him more and more as she felt his love increasing, and that was how in the ripeness of autumn she began to believe once more in the youthful superstition that poverty was the servitude of love. Both looked back then on the wild revelry, the gaudy wealth, and the unbridled fornication as an annoyance and they lamented that it had cost them so much of their lives to find the paradise of shared solitude. Madly in love after so many years of sterile complicity, they enjoyed the miracle of living each other as much at the table as in bed, and they grew to be so happy that even when they were two worn-out people they kept on blooming like little children and playing together like dogs.”
Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude

“The world of finance is a mysterious world in which, incredible as the fact may appear, evaporation precedes liquidation. First the capital evaporates, and then the company goes into liquidation. These are very unnatural physics ...”
Joseph Conrad, Victory

“She was engaged in the task of defending her position in life," said Heyst. "It's a very respectable task.”
Joseph Conrad, Victory
