E. C. Colton grew up searching for comfort and encouragement within fictional worlds, reminders of hope on the other side of difficult situations. Now, as the author of the novella Shards of Sky, she writes contemporary and literary fiction stories about characters who mature and grow through their challenges, sometimes with a touch of magic.

You can find her obsessing over all things blue food and cats, telling entertaining stories from everyday life, and chatting about personal growth over on her mailing list, Elysfable, or Instagram (@eccoltonauthor).

“Only a shard of sky. But it shone so bright, so strong, piercing her vision. For some reason, looking up at it, she felt herself smiling.”
E. C. Colton, Shards of Sky

“The song drifted on, swelling of hopes and beauty and birdsong, salted with the bitterness of the past and hope for tomorrow.”
E.C. Colton, Shards of Sky

“There was some relief in letting go of those dreams, of silently accepting their fate and embracing the unknown.”
E. C. Colton, Shards of Sky

“In friendship...we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years' difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another...the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting--any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you," can truly say to every group of Christian friends, "Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another." The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“I wish we could sometimes love the characters in real life as we love the characters in romances. There are a great many human souls whom we should accept more kindly, and even appreciate more clearly, if we simply thought of them as people in a story.”
G.K. Chesterton, What I Saw in America

“I want you, dear reader, to remember that one holy way of mending the world is to sing, to write, to paint, to weave new worlds. Because the seed of your feeble-yet-faithful work fell to the ground, died, and rose again, what Christ has done through you will call forth praise from lonesome travelers long after your name is forgotten. They will know someone lived and loved here.”
Andrew Peterson, Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making

“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Oscar Wilde
