Henry Thomas (Harry) Blyth (1852-1898) was born in Woolwich, in 1852. He began writing food related books in the mid 1870s and progressed to detective and mystery fiction. He wrote for many of Alfred Harsmworth's papers of the 1890s, including the first Sexton Blake story, "The Missing Millionaire", under the pseudonym Hal Meredeth, for The Halfpenny Marvel in 1893. He also contributed to Pluck, Popular, Chums and Union Jack, among others. He co-published a Scottish satirical paper, Chiel, which ran for eight years.
