I wanted to comment rather than ask - I'm disturbed to see that a lot of reviewers think this is about a 'disturbed' child - in fact her mother makes it clear that Nancy was hyperactive and highly intelligent, and that these traits were medicalised when she sought help and support. DOCTORS started Nancy on drugs, to 'control' her; aren't they responsible for her lifelong dependency and ultimately for her death?

I believe she could have been helped. she was a schizophrenic and did not receive the medication she needed. It is a shame because I am sure she could have been helped. Why wasn't she medicated for schizophrenia?

Does anyone know when 'A Mother's Story of Her Daughters Murder' was added to the title of this book? I just checked my, much read, copy, from 1984, and this isn't anywhere to be seen. Maybe it's always been titled that way in America (mine is the first British edition). I just think it changes the readers expectations of the book, and it really doesn't align with my feelings about the whole, sad, story.
