The author admits any shortcomings in her research but I think still does a good job talking about shame associated with both traditional genders and their similarities. I will say I think her assessment of how shame affects men and women is based on overarching traditional "American values" type experiences, so it may or may not apply to the reader depending on how open s/he might be already. For reading a book in English, you probably need to know many necessary words, but you can't learn essential words unless you start reading!

I would say it's not a hard book to read for a non-native English speaker.

Before that, you can copy and paste some pages of the book (if you got Ebook) on the vocabulary.com, and start mastering those words; this helps you enjoy more form the book.

I also recommend apps like Google Books or especially Amazon Kindle; Kindle provides a feature known as "word-wise" which shows words meaning above them if they're hard words.
