Recovery by Alexandrea Weis is the second novel in the wildly sexy series featuring the enigmatic Nicci Beauvoir. A thrilling read, this character-driven book boasts a whodunit mystery, sultry seductions, and an unforgettable cliffhanging twist.
Once a darling of New Orleans society, Nicci pens a novel about her departed love, the artist David Alexander. She learns David's murder may be linked to someone from her past.
Enter Dallas August, an elite member of Simon's organization of corporate spies prized for his ruthless ability to get the job done. Playing the part of Nicci's lover, Dallas returns to Katrina-ravaged New Orleans with her to flush out the killer. But everything is not what is seems in the Big Easy, and soon the couple finds themselves trapped in a psychotic's twisted game of revenge.
As the danger grows, Nicci's relationship with the handsome spy turns from adversarial to amorous. On the run for their lives, Dallas and Nicci must confront their tormentor before it is too late. It's a deadly decision that could cost Nicci everything, but it is her only chance for finally revealing the identity of the murderer. Hello and welcome to Self-Published Sunday. Have you heard of this author? I haven’t; this is my first read on her work. Is it going to my last one, definitely not? Too much going on in this novel not to want more, and there is more because this is actually number two in the series. I can always go back one and enjoy numero uno before she puts out number three. Alright it is Sunday, let’s cut to the chase, get to what this novel is about, and get to reading on this beautiful Sunday, maybe on the beach, and then a barbecue. Good idea, I think so. Here we go, what is between the covers: “A killer is lurking among the ruins of Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. A killer she knows. Still devastated two years after the mysterious murder of her beloved David Alexander, Nicci Beauvoir surprises everyone in the Big Easy by returning to her hometown with a new admirer: the cool and contentious Dallas August. But the attractive stranger is asking a lot of questions about David’s death, making Nicci’s family and friends speculate about his true intentions. Only Nicci knows that Dallas, a high-priced corporate spy, has come to New Orleans to flush out David Alexander’s killer. Playing the part of her lover, Dallas escorts Nicci around town hoping to get closer to his possible suspects. But hiding amid the city’s elite is a jealous maniac waiting to make Nicci suffer. As the days pass and the danger grows, Nicci’s relationship with the handsome spy turns from adversarial to amorous. Desperate to unearth the identity of David’s murderer, Nicci and Dallas decide to lure the killer out of the city for one final showdown. It is a deadly decision that could cost Nicci everything. But it may be her only chance for… Recovery.” Characters abound in this novel; I love it. Are characters welcome, yes by all means necessary. This is a novel that defies labeling. Alexandrea Weis has so many different elements and facets to this novel that you cannot hang your hat on any of them. I for one like that. Her plotline is complex; I chuckled many times, was sad at others, and yet was thoroughly satisfied at the novel’s end. Good stuff all of it. Worthy of the read and the time invested. This post completes my week of posting on self-published authors and independent publishers. I came across a review of Recovery not too long ago at Jackie’s blog (House Wife Blues and Chihuahua Stories) that really got me interested in the book. After reading the comments I left on her review, Jackie contacted me, along with Alexandrea, to set up a possible review on my blog for her novel. I’m so glad I came across Jackie’s review because I really enjoyed Recovery and Alexandrea is such a pleasure to work with!
Although Recovery is the second book in a series, it can be read as a stand alone novel. I hate reading out of order and I will admit I would prefer to have read book one, To My Senses, first. Nicci Beauvoir is slowly adjusting to life without David. Losing the only man she’s ever really loved has taken a very heavy toll on Nicci. And now that she’s published her first novel she’s trying very hard to come to terms with her loss. That is until she finds out that David’s murder may have not have been just a random act of violence but could have a lot to do with Nicci and her presence in his life. Enter: Dallas August.
Dallas, a very close friend of David’s, is a spy that has been hired to find David’s killer. He also works for the same high-priced employer that David did. He’s got a very cold demeanor but he is extremely precise and is very good at what he does. He tags along as Nicci’s new lover when she returns to post-Katrina New Orleans after her book promotion. And although her family is highly suspicious of Dallas, he’s determined to get closer to the people in Nicci’s life in order to eliminate suspects. Neither is prepared for the passion that slowly starts to burn between them despite the dangerous surroundings.
So Alexandrea provides enough background information for the book to be read by itself. However, I felt a little left out since book one was about David and Nicci. But I’m just being a whiney baby. Reading Recovery has only made me want to read To My Senses that much more. Although I liked Dallas and Nicci, my favorite characters were Nicci’s family, her father and uncle in particular. I’m a sucker for romance and paranormal things but if you give me characters that can have hilariously written dialogue I am a happy, happy camper. Nicci’s family is dysfunctional but fun and I had such a great time with them. But I’ll happily admit the banter and tension between Nicci Dallas was equally fun!
I enjoyed being able to feel the author’s obvious love and respect for New Orleans through her writing. I haven’t been there myself, before or after Katrina, and I can’t imagine the devastation that the storm caused for the beloved city. Alexandrea’s descriptions were powerfully written and an important aspect of the novel since the city meant a lot to Nicci as well.
I’m looking forward to what awaits Nicci and Dallas in the next installment and I’ll definitely be reading To My Senses so I can catch up with everything. Recovery is a great mystery/romance novel that is fast-paced and filled with really fantastic characters.
I didn't realize when I read this book that it was actually part of a series. "Recovery" is a great stand-alone book that I really enjoyed reading. It took me about 20 pages to get into it and I think that is because I haven't read the first book, "To My Senses" yet.
I enjoyed discovering the characters in this book. Nicci Beauvoir seemed to be having a hard time recovering from her fiance's death and was using the book that she had written about him as therapy. The interaction between Nicci's father and uncle was funny.
Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, "Recovery" is about Nicci Beauvoir's search for her fiance, David Alexander's killer. Nicci is pulled into a world of intrigue by David's old employer, Simon La Roy, who also wants to know who murdered David. Simon sends Dallas August, another employee of his, to New Orleans with Nicci. As Nicci and Dallas investigate David's murder, they set sparks off each other that go from being adversarial to romantic at the end. Nicci's family and friends are very interested in their relationship because they, particularly Dallas, are asking so many questions about David. They are not certain what to make of Dallas. At first, I don't think that Nicci was certain what to make of Dallas either.
The only thing that I didn't like about this book is how Nicci and Dallas always seemed to be screaming at each other, even when they were out in public and it would seem discretion would be the better option. Seriously. Conversations were "he screamed at her...", "she screamed at him..." Maybe that was just the sparks between the two of them, but I had a hard time with that since several of these conversations took place in public and I would have thought that they would have wanted to keep their conversations about their search for David's killer to themselves. Otherwise, "Recovery" is well written and kept me guessing who the killer was until the end. Since I enjoy mysteries that keep me guessing and don't tell me "who done it" until the end, I liked this book. I did have my suspicions about who the killer was, but there were a couple of things that had me thinking that maybe the killer was someone else. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and found it to be interesting and hard to put down.
I've added "To My Senses" to my list of books to read. I will be looking for more from this author in the future.
I obtained an electronic copy of this book from the author to review as part of her Virtual Book Tour.

Christmas is always a magical time of year. Well, that is for most people. Some find it rather bothersome. The same old songs, the same old people and then there is family that you have to deal with. More eggnog…stranded travelers…snow…in general chaos.
In this delightful tale by Ms. Weis, post Hurricane Katrina, we find Nicci Beauvoir in a Manhattan Book store signing copies of her book ‘Painting Jenny’. ‘Painting Jenny’ was written about her time with famous Artist David Alexander, Nicci was his Jenny, his muse until he was killed. He had a past and that past brings us to present day, where his (Simon La Roy) employer enlists her help in finding David’s killer. Along with Dallas August, also employed by Mr. La Roy, head to New Orleans to find David’s killer.
Ms. Weis did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life in this story. Each one jumped off the page and complimented the next to where you couldn’t help but fall in love with every nutty, kooky person in Nicci’s family (I know I wish I had her family). I laughed at Nicci’s Uncle Lance and her father Bill made me laughs, typical brothers who actually like each other. They were comic relief. If that weren’t enough, you have eccentric Aunt Val who in her own way was like the Matriarch of the family. Uncle Ned quite because he lives with the ‘Hoover Twins’ better known as his wife Hattie (loves to spread gossip) and daughter Colleen (with her over the top dresses and hair), who as Uncle Lance says “..Sound like hoover vacuum cleaners”. This story is full of loveable eccentrically familiar characters. Every family has them, this one has more than most. Put all these into the mix of finding a killer and you have a delightful murder mystery wrapped with suspense.
From the charming characters, to the descriptions of the devastation left in Katrina’s wake, to the clothes…everything was vivid and I found myself right there on the pages along with Nicci and Dallas as they tracked down the killer and began their relationship and found that they were actually falling in love and not just pretending to find the killer.
Ms. Weis has a winner on her hands. This is a book I myself would enjoy reading again.
Recovery being the 2nd in the Nicci Beauvoir series in my opinion is a perfect stand alone book... While I may have missed out on some of Nicci's backstory it did not matter while reading this book!
I thought that Nicci was someone who had weathered not only personal heartbreak well but picked up the pieces of her life and got on with it! While she obviously had some baggage from the devastation in her past she also managed to create the beginnings of a future that promised to be fulfilling as well as productive!
Dallas August is a suave but cold man who seems very together on the surface but Nicci soon finds out the persona he presents to the world hides a passionate and caring individual who soon unlocks her own passion that has lain dormant for the past two years after the murder of David Alexander.
Together Nicci and Dallas set out to uncover the truth about who killed David.....
This story is filled with scenes of Katrina's horrifying aftermath, the houses and property damaged or totally demolished and also the emotional and physical anguish of all the lives lost due to the storm! What is shown more than anything is the indomitable spirit of a city that may be crippled but it's charm and it 's people will not be vanquished! This carries over to Nicci herself, she is a survivor and in looking for answers about the murderer she is also finding answers about her own self and feeling alive for the first time in 2 years!
I am very glad to have gotten a chance to read this powerful book, it is a mystery thriller that really does thrill the reader with it's drama and the sizzle and heat that Dallas and Nicci turbulent relationship bring to the equation just makes it all that much more fun to read...
For those of us who are fans of New Orleans as a story setting, those of us who love humorous byplay between the main characters and lovers of suspenseful mysteries with romance thrown in this book is a good one to recommend to read... I look forward to more of author Alexandrea Weis work, especially more from this series!

Recovery is a great book filled with wonderful characters, intense emotion and suspense. Nicci is slowly trying to find her way back to herself after losing her lover, David. She meets Dallas, a friend and co-worker of David’s, and is soon plunged into an unexpected adventure of revenge and justice. Dallas and Nicci are very similar. They are both rediscovering themselves. Dallas has been working in his profession for so long that he doesn’t know who is anymore. At first, his coldness toward Nicci put me off and I wondered how she could ever have feelings for him. But as I read the novel, I realized that, in a way, they really needed each other to heal. One of the best parts of the book is Nicci’s family. I just loved the banter between her father and her uncle Lance. Some of those scenes really cracked me up and provided some comic relief when things were getting intense. I really liked the comparison between Nicci’s recovery and the recovery of post-Katrina New Orleans.
Recovery is the second in a series about Nicci Beauvoir. I did not know this going into this book. The author did a nice job of catching me up to speed, so I never felt like I was missing something. I will probably seek out the first one because I hate to miss any part of a series. I definitely recommend this one and look forward to the next Nicci Beauvoir adventure.

By receiving a complimentary copy, I am in no way obligated to write a good or bad review. I am an honest reviewer and my reviews are based on my own opinion and only written by me.*
Recovery is the second novel in the Nicci Beauvoir series written by Alexandrea Weis, and is a romantic thriller set in post-Katrina New Orleans. Not having read the first book in the series prior to reading Recovery, I was worried that I may not be able to follow along with the characters and events, if they were linked heavily to the first book. I was happy to discover that not only was this a strong book for the series, but also a strong book on it's own, and there was no need for worry.
The characters are readily likable. Nicci has a great sense of humor despite being heartbroken for so long, but that may be a credit to the eccentric and highly interesting family she came from. Dallas August is the typical romantic lead, a bit troubled and has a wall around his heart, but this character has a mysterious past and a bit of an anger "thing" at times, so he isn't as easy to "mend" as the traditional hero is.
This story has a proper murder mystery within the pages, and one that had me tethered to the pages, anxious to find out who the evil culprit was at the end. It was very well written, and with a nice helping of romance mixed in with the mystery and suspense. The author's use of words were exceptional as well, and the scenes she painted of the French Quarter and the Katrina-ravaged sections had me seeing them as if I were there, and experiencing them for the first time along with Dallas.
Recovery is definitely a book worth reading, and one I would recommend to any lover of mystery and romance
This was a great mystery story set in New Orleans after Katrina. And it has everything you could want in a story from suspense to romance to a surprising twist. The characters are engaging and interesting and described well enough that you really get a feel for them and who they are, this goes for both the main characters and the secondaries in the story. And the backdrop for the story is just as well done. Most of us have not seen New Orleans after Katrina, but the way the city is described here can easily make you think you have seen it first hand.
There is not a lot that can be said that isn't in the description above without giving away the ending. And you definitely don't want to know who did it before you get there in the story. So I will leave the description to that above.
The story moves at a fast pace and I didn't want to put it down once I started. Also, while this is the second in the series you don't have to read the first unless you want to find out more about Nicci's relationship with David. And while you do find out more about the other characters from the other story, it is not at all necessary to read it before you read this one. The author does a great job of filling in newcomers while not making the story drag for those that have read the first.
If you are looking for a good modern mystery story that still contains some romance this is a series and author to check out. I am looking forward to reading more from her soon.
This is the follow up to the story, To My Senses. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the first book, yet, and with so much going on in this one as a direct result of that first one, I could have easily been lost. Fortunately, the author does enough backtracking to inform us newbie’s, but not too much as to bore those already familiar with Nicci’s past.
This was a dynamic story; adventurous, suspenseful, funny, sexy and at times painfully sad. I really find it hard to categorize it under one genre and to what genre fan to recommend it to as it really speaks to many. The characters are colorful, to say the least. I found myself equally horrified and humored by their eccentricities. The witty banter between crazy relatives made me laugh out loud while making me feel right at home.
Besides the occasional editing mistakes commonly found in self-published works, this book was practically perfect. It’s a cleverly written page turner with plenty of intrigue. The story ends leaving the reader curious and wondering what if? It left this reader imagining what twists the next book could hold and anxiously awaiting its release.
I must admit, it has been a while since a book series really hook me and kept me up late into the night reading but the Nicci Beauvoir series is doing that for me. Wow!! How I've missed this kind of read!! Draws me in fast, keeps me there and leaves me racing to read the next book as soon as I finish the last page.
Recovery is book 2 in the series and it picks up a few years after To My Senses (book 1) ends. Nicci is trying to heal and cope along with reaching for a dream of becoming who she wants to be, not what her socially prominent circle of family and friends tell her to become. A few new people are introduced in this book but there is also still the ones you learned to love (and hate) from To My Senses tied up tight in the drama.
This book has it all, action, romance, intrigue, mystery and, of course, some steamy sex scenes. Ms. Weis has a gift for keeping you turning the pages and begging for more. Now I'm off to start book 3, Sacrifice, because I'm addicted!!
This book seemed to have a little bit of everything. Mystery, suspense, romance, angst, witty repartee between most of the characters. I particularly liked how through pretty much the whole story, while Dallas was trying to assert his alpha male dominance, Nicci just shut him down, refusing to be dominated. Many of the conversations in this book had me laughing. One of the things I like most about Alexandrea Weis books, and this one is no exception, is the attention to detail. In this story, she transports us to Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, and I truly felt like I was there even though I hardly even remember any of the pictures from the news coverage after it happened. I would definitely recommend this book to mystery/suspense romance fans.
A fast paced thriller and more. Nicci is a great character and has a good sense of humor. Dallas has a wall up that Nicci tries to get through. She has been so hurt and heartbroken for so long she might not make it.
I loved the book for the mystery and romance. This book is the 2nd in the series, but that it ok as it is a great stand a lone read. The first book is To My Senses. I will have to go back and read that one. If you love New Orleans you will love the story line.
I have not read the 1st in the series, but that didn't seem to matter with this story. I really enjoyed all the characters, both hero/heroine and the array of supporting characters, especially Nicci's family and inner circle. The frustration both Nicci and Dallas feel as they move slowly toward their relationship, trying to overcome their separate baggage added to the tension already present as they try to uncover who killed Nicci's fiance.
Another incredible book by Alexandrea Weis and second book about Nicci. This one is two years after the last book and things in Nicci's life are going to change again. How do you recover from knowing the love of your life was murdered, one way is to help find the murderer. Nicci is set up with Dallas to figure the mystery out. Lots of surprises and action lead to Nicci finally coming to terms with everything. I loved this second book and cannot wait to read book 3.
I really, really liked it! This is the second book in the series, but it works really well as a stand-alone (I should know, 'cause I started with this one, LOl). It ahs everything! Great tension, romance, strong and problematic heroine and hero, and awesome murder mystery. Loved all the great second characters. I'll look for book 1 and book 3, that's for sure.
I love this this entire series! The characters have depth and are convincing. The story is believable and extraordinary in detail. I felt I knew exactly where every scene took place. This series is a nail biter and you will not believe the ending! This is definately a series you can read multiple times and still find fresh approaches to the relationships and the storyline.
This is the 2nd in the series and it has all the mystery and craziness of New Orleans that we've come to love. The hunt for David's killer was exciting and frightening. Now there's a new guy Dallas. Can Nicci get past his usual cold heart and figure out who he truly is or will he go back to New York?
This book was much more intriguing than the first in the series. I am pretty happy with the ending as-is though so I'm not sure if I will pick up the third. I like to think the Nicci is starting a future with Dallas and leaving the past, and David, behind. I'll read the description of the third to decide.
