A new, redesigned edition. First printing. 192 color pages, saddle stitched, open binding. Featuring an interview with Mattias by his publisher Jens Andersson. The first edition of this book was published in 2011 in a different version and format. It has been sold out for a couple of years.
Re-reading this in preparation for an interview with the artist. Again I'm struck with just how much story Adolfsson manages to squeeze into his sketches. There are a few short comics in this book, otherwise it's mostly single drawings, and normally I would seek out the comics as a fly to a brightly shining lamp in the night, but here, they are actually the weakest parts of the book.
The drawings are often incredible in their detail, scope and sheer audacity. They sometimes take my breath away and I often loose myself into the myriad of details that they contain. Book designer Jens Andersson has also several times zoomed in and reproduced parts of the most detailed drawings, so that you can really see what's going on, after first having seen the whole of the drawing. This makes me feel that the book could easily have been twice it's size, and you would still have a problem seeing everything. It's this, which I am acutely reminded of when reading The First in Line right after the beautiful, oversized Larger than Line, that makes me stay at a four star ranking. This is incredible, beautiful drawings, but I would have loved for them to have been given the space that they deserve.
