Rosie doesn't think spending the day at work with Grandma will be any fun at all. But Rosie has the time of her life as she is initiated into the exotic and adventure-filled world of a hair salon. Girls will love reading about Rosie's adventures at the action-packed salon, from a home hair color gone wrong, to the mystery of a lost boy and a missing wig! Readers get to share in Rosie's fun by picking out their own shades of nail polish, hairstyles, and lipstick color and other items shown in the colorful illustrations throughout the book.
When Rosie finds out that she is going to be spending the day with Grandma Antoinette at her new job, at first she isn't thrilled. Work is no fun, she thinks. But it turns out that the hair and beauty salon where her grandmother works has plenty to keep her interested, and Rosie thoroughly enjoys her day...
Originally published in 2005 as In Style with Grandma Antoinette, and then republished in 2007 as Beauty Day, this is the twentieth picture-book I have picked up from author/illustrator Judith Caseley. Like so many of her other stories, it features a seemingly ordinary occurrence - in this case, the workplace - but infuses it with a sense of love and fun. As School Library Journal says in a blurb on the rear dust-jacket flap: "Caseley makes an everyday situation special through her loving interpretation." The story is engaging, and the artwork colorful and appealing, in a somewhat cartoony, stylized way. Recommended to young girls who find the beauty salon fascinating, or to anyone looking for grandmother/granddaughter stories for children.
A good day spent with Grandma! This book definitely reminds me of day I would have enjoyed with my Grandma at a salon. Little Antoinette spends the day at a salon with her Grandma and this story is interactive along with a funny plot. When William and the wig get lost and Antoinette ends up making some tips, she realizes how much fun she is having. The story also asks questions along the way that could be used to engage readers.
