Cursed
(Touched # 1)

As a private investigator specializing in paranormal problems, London Eyer thought she could handle working for the Sidhe. The Good
Cursed is the first of five short stories from the Touched series. The Touched series is actually one of three series of The Sidhe, a linear set of stories that interweave the Champion of the Sidhe, Rise of the Unseelie, and Touched series.

In Cursed we meet London, an investigator of paranormal problems, who may have bitten off more than she could chew with her next assignment. After Rico curses London to crave his Touch, London has no choice but to let Rico drag her into a war among the parahumans. It is her job to gain the information Rico desires because without his Touch, London may be forced to make some decisions that will change her life...or cause her death.

I don't even know where to begin. This book was brilliant. I was sucked into this dark world of magic and paranormal creatures and pretty much didn't want to leave. I don't know how he did it, but Archer created an amazingly fantastical story that said so much in so little words.

London is a tough chick who's been put in a rather crappy situation. But she takes it all in stride as she does what needs to be done to save her bacon. She kicks ass and takes names, then kicks more ass. It's awesome!

Oh, and the Fey. The creepy, beautiful Fey that have no limits and will doing anything for their brethren. I both hate and love them. I hate what Rico did to London, but I soon found myself seeing his side of things and understanding why he takes such drastic actions.

I loved the action in this book. The fights were fast and gritty. London not only utilized her amazing skills with a gun, she also knew how to use her body as a weapon. A girls gotta be multi-talented this day in age. Especially living in the world London does.

I loved the assortment of creatures and species. A dash of mischievous wizards, a trickle of crazy changelings, a dollop of sexy Fey, and a drop of blood thirsty vampires. It was all so very exciting and terrifying at the same time. I don't know how Archer had me so nervous and eager to continue reading with such a short story. He even had time to supply us with some important history that helped the world building. Oh, and I can't forget the writing. Archer knows what he is doing when it comes to a flawless writing style and structure. Cursed was a seriously dark adventure, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Bad
The only part that bothered me was how short it was. But I can't really fault the author since that was his goal the whole time. But it does take some time getting use to the abruptness of some of the scenes in the novelette.

The Snuggly
We definitely get some sexy scenes but no real sex. Expect some bumpin' and grindin'.

Overall
Even though it was very short, something I will have to get use to, I really loved this story. No doubt in my mind, I will be reading this whole series and the two companion series that go with it. If you like urban fantasy, adventure, and some good fighting scenes, then you will love this novelette. Highly recommended.

Quotes
The scuttling sound of claws and scales against stone came from above. London searched the shadows overhead. As the creature hung upside down from the rafters, its huge eyes glistened wetly. Humanoid in basic anatomy, the thing was skeletal thin. Arms legs half again as long as a human’s and oddly jointed so the knees and elbows angled backward like a mosquito. The flesh, as best as she could make it out, was a nearly black green. The ears pointed a full hand span above the top of its bald head. The rows of teeth it bore in its gaping mouth were needle sharp and inches long. Show… No… Fear…

Cursed is another one of the interweaving stories that S. A. Archer has written that holds much promise. Archer has taken a unique approach in writing short stories that while each can stand alone, they intertwine with one another. An added bonus is that they are short enough to be read in one sitting and leave the reader wanting more.

In Cursed, we are introduced to private investigator London Eyer who has an interesting encounter with a Sidhe named Rico. Rico is appropriately named, because he is able to convince London to work for him exclusively with his own special brand of magic that only a Sidhe possesses. I found myself unconsciously wishing I was in London's shoes despite the fact that I have no skills at all in investigation.

I really love the realm that Archer is setting up with these stories that are setting the foundation, I assume, for many others soon to follow. What I like most about this story is how much the reader is able to get into London's thoughts and understand her feelings. Since Rico has now 'Touched' London leaving her consistently needing more, she now has no choice but to work for him and try to seek some relief to this special magic that she will now crave. Factor in a few Changelings, a chatty Wood Elf and a Vamp who also happens to be London's best friend and the stage is set perfectly for action and adventure that contains things that are not always as they appear. These are definitely not the fairy tales of your childhood!

Since End of the World, Aftershock & Cursed are all part of the same series/world per se, i've reviewed them together..

My Thoughts
________________________________________
I really enjoy stories based on myths, legends and folklore. Whether it’s Greek, Roman, Sumerian or Celtic, lore adds such a mystical element that will put a novel far above other fiction…in my opinion anyway.

Also I admit that I’m a big fan of novellas and short stories. It’s incredibly difficult to create a good backstory, develop characters and establish a captivating plot in such a limited amount of pages. A lot of authors end up overwhelming readers with too much detail on either front and it’s hard to get the balance just right. I think it’s a true test of an author’s skill to communicate all we need to know and successfully deliver a story that makes us want more.

S.A Archer and S. Ravynheart are among those skilled authors.
________________________________________
The Story World…
________________________________________
This story introduces us to a world deeply rooted in Irish lore. The fey are the people of the Tuatha de Danaan or the goddess Danu. The Seelie and Unseelie Sidhe and lesser fey (elves, pixies, fairies, changelings, goblins, etc.) all reside in the Mounds (the power base of all the fey) with the All-Mother Danu. Part of the story takes place in the human realm where vampires, werewolves, wizards, some lesser or earthborn fey live.
________________________________________

The authors use a unique way to deliver this series. They’ve created 3 different mini-series that capture some of the same events but from different perspectives. There are crossovers and connections between the 3 and ultimately they will lead to a ginormous confrontation later in the series.

The first mini-series is Champion of the Sidhe and this story is told from Lugh’s point of view. He is the Champion of the Fey and King of the Seelie Court. The second is Rise of the Unseelie and this story is told from Jhaer’s point of view. He is the Leader of the Elite Unseelie warriors. The third is Touched, where we hear London’s story on the human realm.

It took me a while to figure out how things fit together. But once I did, I found the technique the authors are using quite effective. The entire Part 1 would equal the length of a novella. There is a reading order that should be followed in order to avoid spoilers. For Part 1, you should read in this order: #1) End of the World; #2) Aftershock; #3) Cursed.

________________________________________
The Series Part 1…
________________________________________
In Part 1 of the series, a catastrophic event occurs in the fey world. Just when the wars between Seelie and Unseelie have finally ended and it was decided to unite under one Court, The Mounds is destroyed. Death and loss to both sides is enormous and only a few fey survived the devastation. There are no answers or explanation and too much to deal with to even start inquiring.

The story from Lugh’s perspective is told in End of the World. At first Lugh thinks the Unseelie Elite leader, Jhaer, is responsible for the catastrophe. Its known that the Unseelie Elite isn’t in favor of the union and the attack is coming from the earth; which is Jhaer’s element to control. However, Lugh soon realizes that what is happening is much worse than what Jhaer is capable of or what even he would do. Fearing Danu is in danger and the fact that she alone controls the magic of all the fey, Lugh rushes to see to her while Jhaer tries to hold off the attack. I can’t really say any more on Lugh’s story, as it would be a huge spoiler.

Jhaer in Aftershock then tells the same event from his point of view. Even though Jhaer is not in support of the union of Seelie and Unseelie courts, he was not the cause of the collapse. Jhaer’s magic is of the earth element and he tries desperately to stop the devastation from occurring even to his own peril. However, it is in vain and to his dismay, he cannot stop the catastrophe from happening.

After the collapse, Jhaer enters the earth realm, changes his name to Donovan to blend in with humans, and with the help of a friend, finds an alternate source of magic – one that is even more pure than what he had in the Mounds. He sought out other fey that migrated from the Mounds years ago and were earthborn, found many and started to rebuild.

In the meantime, we are introduced to London in Cursed. London is a human private investigator with a paranormal client base. As a human, she is susceptible to many things supernatural; however, she manages to stay safe through caution, watchfulness and by making herself very useful to those who cannot move in the human world.

Most of her clients are vamps and weres - basically part human – so she was not experienced in dealing with her new fey client. All her carefulness could not arm her from becoming cursed with the Touch of the Sidhe. The Touch is highly addictive, life-long and without the energy release from a Sidhe, a human can die. It’s comparable to a heroin addiction except there’s no cure. London is now under the total control of the fey.
________________________________________
The Main Characters…
________________________________________
So, a little about the main characters in the series… None of them seem to be truly good or truly bad. We would expect Lugh to be the good one or the hero given he is The Champion of the Sidhe, from the Seelie court and considered the Light fey. Conversely, we expect Jhaer to be his evil nemesis from the Unseelie court considered the Dark fey. However, reading the same story from different perspectives shows us that this is not the case at all. Both have good and evil traits. I think it’s going to be hard for us to pick a side if we are apt to do so.

Lugh
Lugh is the King of the Seelie court; protector of all the fey and his successes in battle earned him the title of Champion of the Sidhe. He is larger than life and considers himself above most, especially the Unseelie. He is deemed “The Shining One” because his magic controls the Sun. He is certain the best path for the fey is to unite the Seelie and Unseelie courts and refuses to accept anything else. In the midst of the attack, Lugh showed that he is indeed a great leader by quickly assessing the best way to protect all fey is to protect the All-Mother.

Jhaer/now Donovan
Jhaer is the leader of the Elites who worked his way up through the ranks proving he worthy to hold that title. He seems more driven to protect the Unseelie fey since they are considered lower in class than the Seelie. That changes after the collapse of the Mounds and he is very protective and caring towards all the fey he finds on earth surface. He is already establishing himself as their leader. But don’t be fooled by this kindness. I have a feeling he is going to turn out to be a bit of a bad boy as the series progresses.

London
London is a fearless and courageous heroine. She is comfortable working around the paranormals she deals with on a daily basis and faces things head on. She has good intuition and is able to see what most humans can’t or don’t want to see. She’s a good-hearted person trying to help others; however, now that she’s cursed, I think things will have to change for her. She may find herself doing things she would not have before. It will be interesting to see how this will play out for her since there’s no cure. How far will she go and what will she do to get the next fix?
________________________________________
Bottom Line
________________________________________
Given my love of myths, legends and folklore, this series had a lot going for it before I even started reading. Archer & Ravynheart have created a very engaging tale. The writing is great, the plot is interesting, the characters are multi-dimensional and the delivery is superb. Quite a feat given the entire 3 books adds up to the length of a novella. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I am. I’ve already read Part 2 so the review will be posted soon.

Happy Reading!

Summary:

When your best friend is a vampire there's very little that should shock you. London Eyer thought she knew everything there was to know about the supernatural, until she meets her friend Selena's latest meal, Rico. Vampires enjoy the taste of fey blood. It's like a drug to them and Selena is no exception.

Unknown to London, Rico is a fey and as a trade off for feeding from him, Selena offers London's services to Rico; but Rico is a Sidhe and a very powerful one. When he realizes that she is the one responsible for the capture of two changelings (half fey/half human) Rico puts a curse on her and it's one that isn't so easily broken.

Now London must look for the changelings and get them to Rico before the curse can take its full effect. It's a race against time to end the curse before it turns deadly.

Review:

S.A. Archer's Cursed is the first book in Touched, one of three story arcs in The Sidhe series.
This novel was a bit more "paranormal romance" and had more "suggestive scenes" than what I would normally read... so, erm, there's that.

But there were enough plot twists and strong action sequences to balance out the romantic elements. I also read and enjoyed End of the World and Aftershock and was looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.

Despite the fact that Cursed is a novella, Archer does a good job of illustrating the world London lives in without over doing it or describing too much and somehow still giving the the reader enough information to paint their own mental image.

London was likable enough and she wasn't too unbelievable, despite being what I would call a "tough" character. I will admit that she is a bit typical of urban fantasy characters (ie. - private detective specializing in all things supernatural) there was still an element of vulnerability in London's personality that allowed the reader connect with her. Both London and Selena were interesting enough to make me want to pick up the next book.

What I love most about the series as a whole is that the novellas are short enough to read during a lunch break, but interesting enough for you to sit in one spot for an hour and read them all.

Rating: 4/5

Cursed is only one of the books in the interweaving set of stories called the Sidhe Saga. It also happens to be book one of the Touched Series. What this means is that it can be looked at individually (as the first book in a series) or as part of the greater Sidhe Saga adventure. The characters in this short story are also woven into the other stories written by S.A. Archer. Archer has taken a very unique approach to writing – giving the readers small, interesting bites…and leaving them wanting more.

After reading Cursed, I can certainly see the appeal of a book you can read in one sitting. It was refreshing to begin a story, feel immersed in the world created by the author, and find myself finished so quickly. This book had some interesting characters, some questions that were answered and many, many others I was left to ponder over after the last page. Cursed certainly left me wondering what will happen next…it was such a quick adventure!

Now, there is something about this type of storytelling that I need to get used to. As you all know, I am a lover of detail. And this crazy need for information means that I felt like something was missing for me. I finished the book needing more…more data…more pages…in order to fall in love with these characters. That being said, however, I know that the story has just begun. As the series progresses, I am sure I will learn what I need to about our hero, London Eyer, who is a private investigator and has found herself involved with all manner of paranormals. I look forward to learning about the Changellings, Wood Elfs and Vampires that were introduced. And, of course, there’s definitely more information to be had about the magic she has discovered through her encounter with Rico, a Sidhe. I know it’s just the beginning and so my need for detail will likely be fulfilled as the adventure continues. I will definitely read the rest of the series!

My Review:
My Rating: A-

Hmm, and the story takes an interesting twist with London. London is a human private investigator who works with the paranormals. She was hired to do a job which appears to have landed her in some seriously deep water although she had no idea at the time that there was anything to worry about.

This book, more than the other two, has seriously sucked me into the story. I NEED to know where this is all going. London's tough and has found herself in a situation with no escape. It's really, really interesting and I like the more overall view of the entire paranormal world this section of the story provided. I'm really liking all of these stories so far!

I plan to slide 3 a week into my review schedule for the next few weeks, so I'm excited to see where the stories go! I definitely recommend you try these out!

This was a really fun short story, and the first in a series of three. Because it is a short story there is very little I can go into detail about without spoiling the whole thing for you, but I will do my best to discuss broad topics.

London is a very interesting character to me, she is one of those humans who exist in the world of paranormal. While she is a human she is someone who has contacts with various paranormal beings, which as you can imagine results in all kinds of interesting situations. I like her because I like her inner dialogue, and even though she is a human and without any powers, she doesn't back down from a fight and thinks on her feet.

Selena was a character who wasn't fully developed but I have a feeling will be back in future installments. Even though Selena isn't a huge focal point in the story, you can tell from the short interactions that she is a bad ass and has a bit of a sassy streak in her.

One thing I appreciate about this book is that is deals with the Fae, but acknowledges that the Fae can be a rather confusing group to understand. London don't particularly deal with the Fae so she is entering into the unknown. I like that because it was a short story, the author didn't go into a huge amount of detail because it would have just over taken the book. You get just enough information about the Fae to understand what you need to for the short story.

Overall this is a solid short story, it is a quick read, but still interesting. It ends with just the right amount of cliff hanger, and has quality writing within. If you are looking for a short story to enjoy this would be a contender.

I was given a copy of this book to read from the author.

This book was 10,000 words so it was a short novelette, it was packed full of action and started off with a bang.

There are some adult content to this book so it would not be suitable for younger readers.

In the first chapter we meet the protagonist London, a female private investigator that is involved in the world of Parahuman. In her world we meet vampires, the fey, changelings (who have the ability to shape shift) and wizards. London’s best friend, Selena is a vampire and in the first chapter you are introduced to both London and Selena. They have a very close friendship; you can see this in the story. London is introduced to a new client and things take an unexpected turn, she is thrust into a turbulent situation where time is of the essence.

This is the first book I have ever read by S A Archer and I have to say I found it very good. I liked the writing style and found it flowed quite easily. I managed to devour this book in less than two hours. I would definitely like to read more books in this series and I have them sat on my kindle waiting; they won’t be staying there unread for much longer. I’m keen to read more about the world that S A Archer has created.

I love books with strong female characters, London ticks every box. She certainly knows how to look after herself and it seems life is not boring around her.

My only criticism is that I wish the book had been longer, but this is a novelette after all. But this is has only whet my appetite for more of the stories.

More 3 1/2 stars

London is called to a meeting with vampire associate and friend Selena, to meet a new client - Rico. London's new client is... special and curses her with a touch to working for him, a sidhe. Now she needs to find some specific information for him while jonsing for his next touch, but who knows what more will be needed or happen in the future.

This short read starts out with a dark sexual, sensual feel to it. And even has a dark feel through it. After reading the other two short stories I liked the history supplied through London's contacts and the darkness here. This story introduces a few other elements to the other short stories, a history and the side of the fey's enemies. We learn much more of the Wizards and their brief history with the fey. We see the land is divided by the fey and wizards, Ireland and England.

I'm curious to see how these three storylines touch each other through the future writings. They each add elements to the other series. All do have a feel of the beginnings of a book for each character, but do have an arc to the story and a close. Just a close that lets you want to know more.

*sits up* Oh, now this one was fun. Fun with a capital F. Fun like the way I imagine people living amongst Vampires and the Sidhe would have fun. Well, maybe not so much that last one. I mean, I don't think *I'd* want to be cursed the way London's been cursed. And I don't think I'd last long in her world. I'm wimpy like that. But, oh, did I enjoy reading about her.

London is a strong woman and this curse lays her low. Its physical repercussions are a blow to someone who prides herself on being in charge of a situation. As an added bonus, she's being forced to do something that she might not have done otherwise. I say 'might' because London is a complicated woman and she just might have taken the job anyway.

A fascinating world populated with intriguing and sometimes creepy creatures, London's problems are just beginning. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I liked the sound of this book-cursed by the Fae to make you work for them and find a way to get back at the creep. Yeah works for me.

Except that it didn't. The MC's so called 'friend' arranges a meeting with a potential client at a club. Friend fails to warn our human MC how dangerous this guy is and that he can enslave her with a touch. Then AFTER MC is enslaved, the friend says how dangerous he is and maybe you shouldn't go near him or let him touch you. Oh that's clever isn't it! With friends like that you don't need enemies huh. As usual our Fae guy is obnoxious, controlling, rude and has all the girls screaming with desire every time he looks at them. Oh please! I hate these books that feel like almost like paranormal porn with MC's writhing and gasping all the time when they don't want to because of a bad Fey guy. Ugh.

Didn't finish, don't want to read more.

Although Urban Fantasy is not my usual choice of reading material, I was pleasantly surprised with Cursed "The Sidhe". The authors have made the lead character, London, easy to like and support. London is a strong-willed, self-sufficient woman who knows what it takes to survive while dealing with the Fey and Vampires. I was drawn into the story and plan to read the entire series. My curiosity is peaked and I can hardly wait to see what's next.
I am an avid reader (4-5 complete novels per week) and while this read was very short...it was entertaining!

London Eyer is a very believable character in this rich telling of human, parahuman, complicated interactions. She is a private investigator specializing in parahuman cases who gets herself tangled in the world of the Sidhe, vampires, and wizards. And now she’s right in the heart of the conflict, with all sides trying to kill each other and her. Try as hard as she can to remain distanced from the conflict, she still ends up smack dab in the middle of it.

I found it so easy to vividly see in total detail the story unfold in my mind's eye as I read through each book. I was mesmerized by each book. No sooner did I finish one, as I went searching for the next ... stressed to the max to find out what came next until I found it. I am so anticipating the next one!

Cursed is a fantastic read. As are all the other books in the Touched series; Addicted and Enchanted.

The Touched series is one of three companion series that run concurrently. Each series presents a unique viewpoint on the urban fantasy world of The Sidhe.

These three books are part of S. A. Archer's companion series that run concurrently. The three companion series are: Champion of the Sidhe, Rise of the Unseelie, and Touched.

Cursed is a novella and is a quick read. It is filled with action, suspense and romance. The reader is given just enough information to keep you reading without giving too much away.

London is a human and also a private investigator for the paranormal. Her best friend Selena is a vampire. London has a meeting with a new potential client, Rico, a Sidhe. When she arrives she realizes that her friend Selena is making a meal out of him. She assumes this will be an easy assignment. It's only when Rico "touches" London that she realizes that this new job may not be as easy as she thinks. She needs to find the changlelings that Rico is looking for fast so she can break the curse of "the touch" before she goes crazy.

I liked London, she is a kick butt character who is also feisty. I liked the novella but didn't love it. I would have liked to known more about the characters and just more to the story itself. Overall a quick likable read. This e-book was provided to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

*Book source ~ Many thanks to the author for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

London Eyer is a private investigator specializing in the paranormal. When she is blackmailed into working for Rico of the Sidhe her life changes in an instant. She may be forced to work for him, but she’s not doing it without fighting for all she’s worth. She will do the job, but as much on her terms as possible considering the Curse he’s put on her. The question is: Will she survive?

Ok, this story is definitely a good start to a new series. It’s very short, so there’s only a brief glimpse of what this new world and characters are like, but it’s enough to make we want more. I like London. A lot. She reminds me of Harry Dresden (though he’s a wizard) and Anita Blake in the early books (though she’s a necromancer), but the attitude is one that I enjoy reading. She may be forced to do something, but she’s not going to just roll over and play nice. The ending is very intriguing and not how I expected it to turn out, but I very much look forward to reading more in this series.

"Cursed" is a thirty-two page story, referred to as an episode by the author. It goes with a 'season' of stories. I'm not big on this idea, especially since I am not a fan of serials to begin with. However, the piece was generally well-written and interesting. I liked that the author included an introduction to the world and a glossary.

There is a lot of action packed into this short piece. I was pleasantly surprised with the cohesiveness of the plot and the level of details provided. I plan to read more of these, even though I much prefer one book rather than so many different stories that go together. It clutters up my Kindle app. I can't complain too much, though, because it was a free download, as are many of the the other episodes in the season.

The only other negative besides the length is that I didn't always follow the main character's logic. It would take me a while to figure out why London did the things she did.

If you like urban fantasy, this is a series worth checking out. I give it 4 stars, mostly because of the intense action.

blech this was just awful to me. I thought the intro to the world was a nice touch and got my hopes up but that was the best part if you ask me. ok first this chick is supposed to be tough which would be great except she gets her ass handed to her in every single scene. we have what amounts to a magical rape and no one even is that offended by it. frankly I didn't even realize she was human until that and really what were they thinking throwing a human into the mix of fey. the plot itself wasn't awful but there were more loose ends than answers. I didn't much like the writing either though maybe I was skimming more than reading I thought a totally different character had died than the one who did. honestly forty pages was too long for this mess. wouldn't read more by this author

London is a human who's friends with Selena, a vampire, and other paranormals such as weres, demons and wizards. Rico is a new contact who's not happy that London "introduced" a fey to wizards. Unfortunately for her, Rico is a Sidhe and Touches London, making her crave the magic of the fey.

Things to very wrong when London tries to save the fey she almost got killed. Events go fast and are a bit odd, yet I feel like it was written better than the other novellettes I've read from Archer and Ravynheart.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This is quite an interesting series so far. I love the development of the characters and the angle which helps me enjoy them without a critical eye. You meet a wide range of magical characters and lots of action. The writers gives you those you want to push for and the rest you want to hang up by their toe nails. I hope the intensity stays throughout the series because I can wait for the next book and hope it is just as good if not better than the first.

Okay, here's one that was short but not lacking anything. At. All.

Let's just say that this book is quite a start to a series that I can't wait to sink into. There's magic, a curse (a rather interesting curse to say the least), vampires, Fae, plenty of action and some smexy moments that were.. well, you'll have to read it to appreciate the irony here.

Can't wait to see what London is in store for next.

I received Cursed as a free download from Amazon on May 26, 2013.

London is a private investigator dealing primarily with paranormals. When she gets tricked into working with a Sidhe, he curses her with his Touch. In order to relieve the curse, she must be touched by a Sidhe often, and fed magic to temporarily push away the sensations. London will do anything to make it go away, but there is no cure, only the touch. This was a nice intro to the Touched series. I would read more from this author.

This is a really, really, really strange book.

The idea is nice (or it could be nice). The novel is really short and confusing as hell. You've no background information about London and about the world, you'll get just a few ones during the reading but that's it. Nothing really makes sense for me. I doubt that the next two books will be better.

An interesting short story in the urban fantasy genre, this is worth the read. Like most short stories, the characters are not well-enough developed here to catch my on-going interest, but there is definite future potential.

I always feel pretty bad when I give a book, or in this case a novella, a bad rating but I cannot help the fact that there was nothing in this novella I enjoyed. Not to say it was terrible and no one should read it. It just wasn't the book for me.

This book was alright. It showed some promise with the story line in the beginning, but then it gets all jumbled once she goes as the shifter and wizards, and he supposedly dies. I wasn't impressed. I won't be reading the next one.
