What is a girl to do when an awkward first date leads to a trip back in time?
When she agreed to go on a date with quantum physicist, Dr. David Fergusson, Kate Kallastad never expected that he would insist on demonstrating his breakthrough in his RAL funded research into the creation of a trans-space teleportation device. Nor did she expect to get caught up in a science experiment that would send both Kate and her date hurling through space-time.
Stranded in the past with only a diminishing hope that David will be able to send them home and nothing but time on her hands, Kate takes a step down from biochemist to take a job as a maid in the household of the new Earl of Harrowby. However, this Earl if no stuffy carbon copy of Walt Whitman but rather a stunning embodiment of masculine appeal who sends her senses reeling.
To Kate, Brandon Ryder, the Earl of Harrowby, is not like any man the 21st century had ever produced. Beyond gorgeous, he is commanding, austere, aristocratic… magnificent. His appeal to a woman who had never known all those qualities in a single man was undeniable. They just didn’t build them like that anymore. He is reserved where she is merry, grounded where she is capricious. However, when Brand sets his urbane exterior aside and the passionate man within emerges, it is enough to set Kate’s heart soaring.
Brandon Ryder has spent a lifetime bound by the rules of Society and one of those rules is that a gentleman doesn’t trifle with the help. However, Kate Kallastad is no ordinary employee. His lovely new maid challenges him at every turn, astounding him with her forthright manner, by her audacity to treat him not as an Earl but as a mere mortal man. After years amid the prevarication of Society and a family that was distant at best, Brand finds Kate’s honesty and comfortable familiarity tempting, daring him to break free of boundaries that have long ruled him, enticing him to indulge in the truest passion of his life… and his growing passion for her.
Eager to indulge in an unexpected love affair with Brand, Kate embraces a life in the past only to be confronted with a choice. Life in a time that has little to offer a 21st century girl besides a chance at love or a return to her home where she has family and a job she is passionate about? Once her decision is made, will Kate regret her choice or will circumstances beyond her control change her mind for her when it is a matter of life or death?
Love takes a journey across time only to be challenged by risks, regrets and denial. When they are finally able to set all those things aside, will Brand and Kate find the right time for happiness and a life together?

This was all madness, like a bad dream, but Kate was all too aware of the reality. She was here in 1876…with David. Granted there were probably worse people to be stuck in the past with – Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber…certainly that Snooki chick – but it was still a bad situation.

This was a surprisingly good book. I've read a few Historical Time-Travel books before and they all follow the same mold. However this one did it with a twist.
“Are you friggin’ kidding me?” “You ask these nonsensical questions often,” Harrowby frowned. “Your sarcasm tells me that you’re not truly asking if I jest and, I am sure you can tell, I do not. Why do you insist on asking?”
This story starts off with woman named Kate Kallastrad going out on a date with a work colleague. She really didn't want to go but caved under peer pressure from her friends and constant nagging from said date...David. So what does one do on a first date you ask? Well show of your time machine of course! So David drags a very reluctant Kate into a high security area and proceeds to show her how it works. In the process he fucks it up and causes them to both be sucked back 136 Years to the late 1800's. Due to the fact that David got sucked in the wormhole 6 seconds ahead of Kate it roughly translates to David arriving nearly a year before Kate does. This kinda works to Kate's advantage because in the mean time David has managed to buy a house and start working on the time machine to take them back. The downside to all this (besides being stuck in 1876) is that David wants to play happy family and wants to get it on with Kate. In order to avoid this without hurting David's feelings or jeopardizing her only way home she decides to find a job. Kate soon finds out that due to the time period the only job she could get was being a maid for the very sexy Brandon Ryder, the Earl of Harrowby. Flirting ensues and BAM steamy time travel sex, or does it? Well you'll just have to read the book to find out.
She could go home. Kate focused on the thought once more. She could go home. The problem was, suddenly she wasn’t sure if she wanted to.
The beginning was a little long and drawn out but once Kate lands the job as a maid things start to get really interesting. She really has no idea how anything works back then and unintentionally insults everyone around her. EG: Don't look the Earl in the eye, maids are meant to be invisible and don't talk back. She screws up so many times but Brandon finds himself liking this new and outspoken maid. But he has had the rule Don't fraternize with the help drilled into him since he was a little kid so it's up to Kate to be the aggressor. One of my favorite characters was little Nate, the nephew of Brandon that Kate befriends. He's just lost his dad and refuses to speak to anyone, until Kate comes along. It was really sweet watching this little boy come out of his shell.
“First base: kissing. Second base: kissing and some bodily contact like… well, this. Third base… well, you get the idea. More and more until one might get a home run.” “I see,” he said thoughtfully, nipping at her earlobe before pulling back to meet her gaze. “Shall I take you around this second base then, Kate, and see if you hold it against me?” “Batter up,” she whispered and Brand ducked his head, catching her lips fiercely with his once more.
The ending wasn't what I was expecting but I kinda liked that. Overall it was an interesting story with even better characters. If you're looking for a Historical Romance with a Time Travel twist then definitely pick this book up.
It was not a sexual gesture at all for she just held him there tightly, making no other moves. “I thought we agreed to avoid each other’s personal vicinity.” “I’m not putting the moves on you, Brand. I’m hugging you,” she said into his chest. “Have you not had enough of them to recognize them when they are given to you?” “I…well,” Harrowby stuttered looking down at the top of her head where it rested just over his heart. “You could try hugging me back, you know,” came her muffled words. “You just wrap your arms around me and– ” “I know what a hug is,” he grunted and slipped his arms tentatively around her.
So here is another time travel book, but this is the first one I've read that didn't involve a highlander. This one involved and Earl. It was a great story, with a more scientific approach to time travel.
I loved Kate. She was so funny. I could see how her spunk and openness would gain her friends among the other maids. For example the first time she sees Brandon. All of his household staff were all lined up to meet the new Earl, when she whispers "Helloooo, hotness," making all the other maids giggle. She seemed like a breath of fresh air in an uptight world and I could see why people were drawn to her.
So despite my above rant... or maybe not rant, but thoughts and questions, this was a great book. The author did a wonderful job making you feel the difference in time, which had to be difficult. She wrote one character who spoke using modern day slang and one character who spoke and acted as they did back in the 1800's. That had to be difficult to mesh the two. But she did a great job. Every time Kate spoke or did something I could feel how out of place she was there. It was funny.
I had a lot of problems with this story. The saying came into my mind: 'The past is another country, they do things differently there.' I wish Kate, the heroine, had remembered that since she behaved just like a 21st century girl with the same sexual attitudes. She comes on very strong with the earl, pressing herself against him and asking him to kiss her. I was annoyed that when his first response is to take advantage, she is offended. Why? He is a nineteenth century man! At one point she even sits astride his lap. Of course he's surprised, but I felt that he should have been shocked since reputation in nineteenth century England was very important, even for a lowly maid. The earl would have recognised immediately that Kate was sexually experienced and as an unmarried woman, he would have put her in the category of a prostitute. He might have had some fun with her, but he wouldn't have contemplated a relationship with a woman of low morals. He certainly wouldn't have been beguiled by her behaviour. This made me so disappointed with the story since I know that Kate had more to offer. She was kind and considerate and could have ingratiated herself into the earl's affections in much more subtle ways. I thought she was too 'in your face' and I'm afraid this totally ruined the story for me.
Another good read, and well thought out. Kudos for originality, though it has very similar contents to get to "A Time and Place for Every Laird." Of course, once the Author's Note is released, you can see why.
This book has nothing to do with any of the other books written by Angeline, and can do well as a light read. The romance is hot, the sex is hot, and the "bad guy" is for the most part drama free.
There's not much to think about, though it is fairly predictable, it has a quaint sense of sparkling passion that keeps us ladies dreaming of our perfect love (even those of us who believe.we already married him).
Brand left an impression, and so did Kate. I guess I expected her to have more of a backbone in a few of the embarrassing moments, like being pulled by the ear and getting slapped, but I guess Minnesota girls are... well, I guess I can't finish that without sounding rude, but you get my meaning.
While this book.didn't quite make the favorites list, it is indeed a keeper.
I absolutely LOVED this book! After reading many time-travel romance novels in which magical powers moved characters through time, it was a treat to read one that utilized scientific theory instead to conjure 'magic.' Furthermore, the romance between Brand and Kate intoxicates...including fully-clothed kissing scenes that induce the kind of tingling butterflies as only the best YA romances can. That said, you'll not be disappointed when their relationship evolves to include some explicit and sizzling love scenes!
In 1987, the Kim Basinger/Bruce Willis film "Blind Date" was a walk in the park when compared to the first date of Oxford biomed chemist Kate Kallastad and quantum physicist David Ferguson. David bypasses dessert after their dinner for a ride in his new trans-space teleportation device. Reluctantly she allows him to perform a little demonstration. Next thing she knows, she is in 1876 London. David is thrilled, gets a house (including a room and wardrobe for her) and promises to build a new transporter to get them back. Eventually she perceives David is not necessarily in such a hurry to get them back to the twentieth century as she is. He wants to get married and setup house. Kate decides to leave the house to work as a maid for the Earl of Harrowby, in hopes her absence will stimulate productivity of the transporter. The work is grueling. A few weeks into the job she is told they will be leaving London to go to Ramble House in Henly-on-Thames in Buckinghamshire, the country home of Brandon "Brand" Ryder, Earl of Harrowby.
Kate misses her parents and her sister, Ann, but works hard. One night, unable to sleep, she goes to the library to find something to read...and in he walks. Tall, dark, outrageously handsome. And so began a friendship, a passion that is taboo in this time, an Earl and a maid will never be accepted. Their chance meetings and conversations eventually lead to Kate becoming the nanny to the Earl's nephew, Nathan Ralston. Her teaching methods baffle Brand but he can't argue with success, and he can't stay away from Kate.
David has finally completed construction of the transporter and plans to leave within a week. Kate tells him she is in love and will stay with the Earl. The day before he is to leave, Brand comes down with appendicitis. In terror, Kate begs David to take Brand and she back with him immediately in order to save his life. He acquiesced and the transport was successful, the surgery was too. But then the realization of being in the twentieth century becomes the focus for Kate and Brand. This is a well written, charming and entertaining book that I recommend for a weekend read.
I liked the story but the ending was just "meh" for me. Kate was likeable enough. She did have some non 21st century behavioral moments that left me thinking "oh hell no". Some characters were introduced that I felt didn't add anything to the story. I liked Harrowby and I loved seeing him loosen up with Kate's help.
story 2.75 narrator 3.75
antony ferguson's american accent is always entertainment. there were times where in kate's dialogue his british accent came out but knowing that the american accent isn't his strong suit i was happy with his performance.
4.5 stars! This book reminded me a lot of Jude Devereux’s book, “A Knight in Shining Armor”. Except this one had a happy ending and didn’t make me want to weep like a baby. I love time travel romance books, so this REALLY hit the spot.
This book is surprisingly well written and was just a great find. I’m sad to be done reading it... which is a rare feeling for me. I wish I could stay immersed in this story indefinitely. The hero & heroine in this story were fantastic. Loved them both! This is VERY much worth the read for anyone who loves this genre as much as I do.
This was another wonderful story from Angeline Fortin! It wasn’t a insta-luv story which is good. It felt more like two soulmates battling time to find their happiness.
This story makes you think what it would be like living your life based on what society deems acceptable. To not be able to love who you want based on your family’s status.
The bedroom scenes were hot as hell - this author knows how to build up the tension!
An excellent story of time travel but the ending is unexpected! I enjoyed the book and the story was well written. Kate gets hurled into the past with a worker. Add in modern self supporting woman with past values of the time and mix well. The fun begins for Kate trying to survive in the past. Now introduce a lord of the realm and love will bloom with twists. I do recommend this book!
This book has so much potential but it's lost amongst all the random millennial insults (seriously, why?) which genuinely makes the FMC less likeable, not because she is what she says but because she keeps saying it, and the abruptness of the end. Just one more chapter or epilogue would have made it a much more satisfying read instead of ending on a feeling of "oh. okay."
I just can't read the rest of this one. I really liked her laird of time series but for some reason I can't get into this one. I just don't like the characters and it's taking too long to get to a point where I don't want to shoot all of them.
Mediocre writing and dialogues, the author is not talented, has a good story but the execution is lacking. The book was boring, everything was just telling ,not showing and was full of cliches. I kept reading awaiting to get better, but I was much disappointed.
Kate, an academic biochemist's bad first date with an academic physicist ends with heroine being transported back to Victorian England and the physicist cannot get them home....so she takes a job as a maid and meets an Earl.
I love Kate and Brand. Both are wonderful characters without having to belittle the other. Also with Kate being American, that helped explain many of the things she didn't know ... very clever 😉
Loved this book. Very much enjoy the time travel, romance and mystery as well as historical references. Characters very well developed. Looking forward to remaining books in series.
I really enjoyed reading her time travel romance, Nothing But Time for a number of reasons. Besides having crafted a good romantic read, it became clear early on that this author has done her homework. Whether describing old fishing reels, facts relating to historical names and places, or on the mechanics behind her time travel theory, Angeline keeps the reader interested throughout the story.
Although the love story between Kate and Brand follows a predictable path, Angeline's characters and plot lines are well rounded, the dialogue between characters believable, and the addition of historical facts throughout the story makes the story fun to follow.
I would definitely recommend this book and it's author to any romance reader who enjoys a time travel twist. Congratulations Angeline.
Overall oke lah buat ngabuburit. Mumpung lagi puasaan kan. hehehe
