I read most of this and skimmed a bit too. But no matter how I read this, in full or not, I will always end this book thinking:
What the hell just happened?

I had to read the last few chapters several times. Did that all really just take place? Or was it all a dream???? For a bit I wondered if it had a time travel thing going on like Quantum Leap. Lol. Idek. I think a dream explains it best.

I give it a 3 star rating even though I hated the ending and it left me confused and with loads of questions. It's definitely an original story; and an outside the box storyline. The story reads fast and is told in dual POVs.

I wanted Adam to sweep in and save Katie from a controlling, emotionally abusive father. I wanted Katie to save Adam from his heart break. And I really wanted Adam and Katie to have their " happy together finally" moment. Technically I guess they did. But it didn't "last". I really was enjoying it until the end happened. I loved Adam and how he was with Katie and he would do anything for her, even give up his career. And Katie, who would hatch up a plan to escape her father. Well look, I feel like this was a dream version of a modern day Romeo & Juliette. The universe and others were truly conspiring against these two.

The author may not believe in: HEA's "wrapped up with a pink bow" as it doesn't reflect reality, but honestly? I'm after the neat pretty tied up story. That's why I'm reading a story to begin with. I'm escaping reality. Not trying to find it in a book

It’s always an honor to be among the first to review a debut novel of an Indie author. I was pleasantly surprised to be approached. While I assumed from the cover and synopsis, this would be a love story, I wasn't nearly as prepared for the intense emotional impact of this literary journey.

Heartbeat was such the almost perfect soul mate story. I say almost because there were colossal hurdles woven into the scenario. Reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, the world was totally against these two. Katie is a sickly recent high school graduate living at home with her granny and father. Adam is a paramedic with emotional baggage. They meet by chance due to a car accident and thus begin their saga. It's not by far a smooth wooing. These two have social issues, villains, and haters.

After the initial meeting is a series of near misses with a lot of longing and fantasizing that'll make you (the reader) swoon. The composition is genius! It's broken down into nice short chapters that had me whipping through and before I knew it I was done. There's alternating points of view so you can get the full spectrum of the two lovebirds. I was a tad disappointed with the transition from infatuation to physical. I expected the piano playing scene to have a theatrical flair considering how the hug blew me away. Overall this was a nicely crafted dramatic romance and bitter sweet novel.

I would definitely recommend to drama fans, New Adult seekers and standalone novel fanatics. Big Thanks to the author for entrusting me with an honest review.

No. No, no, no. It just cannot end that way. I love love love abrupt, cliff-hanger and even sad endings and I know that when everything is going fine something bad is about to happen and yeah, life is like that. But the way Heartbeat ended...
Oh my God! I just cannot get over it. I don't know what to think of it. I don't know what to make of it. Hell, I don't even know how and why and when it happened because it happened so quickly. I don't even want to bring myself to accept it. Yeah, I don't know.
When I read what author Faith Sullivan had to say about Heartbeat on Goodreads, I completely agreed with and loved what she had to say. After that, I immediately knew it was a book I had to read. I had prepared myself for the ending but when I actually got to it and read Katie and Adam's story, it was devastating and heart-breaking.
This review is going to be short, because honestly, there isn't much to say about the story. You have to read it to find out what happens. The characters, however, have a lot that can be said about them.
Katie lives with her dad who doesn't give a damn about her but still wants to keep her under his eyes and watch her every move and her grandmother, who is a very sweet and warm lady. Katie and her grandmother live a rather sad life and are as good as jailed under the the roof of Katie's father's house. I know that for most readers, Katie will appear to be way too innocent and naive in today's day and age. But in some way, I could completely relate to her and understand her. She has a golden heart. What happened to Katie shouldn't have happened but life is like that and even though I am unsure what to feel about it, I loved how unexpectedly realistic it was.
Adam has left his hometown because his ex girlfriend was cheating on him. He is pursuing his studies in paramedics and drives the hospital ambulance. His brother Brian and his parents are very helpful. Adam, as a guy, was very kind and supportive. He too, just like Katie, has a heart of gold.
Together, Katie and Adam were a joy to read about. I loved how they both basically reflected the exact same feelings for each other since the first time they met.
Overall, like most books that end the way Heartbeat did, I don't know how to put my feelings in place.
Author Faith Sullivan's writing is systematic. The dual points of views, as always, were necessary and favourable to read. Faith has a way of showing the real picture by amalgamating truth and reality and I admire the author for just that. Life truly is not a bed of roses and neither is it fair.
I'm really looking forward to know more in the upcoming books of the Heartbeat series, Come What May and I Am Yours and I am counting on Faith's promise to give the readers a detailed explanation of everything.

This was a sweet story about love, but not your typical girl meets boy, girl and boy fall in love, girl and boy live happily ever after kind of love. Rather Heartbeat is the story of what could be (hope) and what might have been (regret).

After a chance meeting, Katie and Adam continue on with their own lives like they would normally do with any other person. The only thing is, each cannot stop thinking about the other. I think what I liked most about this book is the author made Katie and Adam seem realistic. Real people do not fall in love at first sight (well, not usually anyway), and that did not happen with these two. Rather, they were captivated and curious about each other. Adam berates himself for not saying hello to Katie when he passed by her in the hospital and for not asking for her number when he had the chance, and he spends his time wondering if she thinks he's good looking, or if she's thinking of him at all. Likewise, Katie is confused about Adam – does he think I'm pretty, should I say something to break this awkward silence, why am I thinking of him at all after one short meeting? These are thoughts real people have. Remember that awkward stage after first meeting someone and wondering what they are thinking, wondering if there is a chance there could be something more? The author got that stage down perfectly in this book, and through her writing we learn about Katie and Adam as individuals before they ever meet up again.

When Katie and Adam do meet again, that connection is there, and it is beautiful. They don't know each other well but are willing to risk everything to be together, to take a chance at love even though it may just end up in heartbreak. That's really all I'm going to say about this book because anything else will give too much away. Though, I do have to mention the ending. I will admit that I read some other reviews before deciding to read this book, and some people have no problem with giving away everything about a book (ever hear of spoiler tags people?), so I knew what to expect. Still, even with knowing, I was floored with the ending. It did not really happen like I expected it to. It was heartbreaking and beautiful and a bit confusing. What really happened?

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was exactly what I needed... how many of you have a grandparent that means the world to you? How many of you have lost a person that has had your back since before you existed? What happens when they are gone? What happens when your grandmother is no longer there to protect you from your father?

When Katie and her grandmother are in a car accident, they are rescued by the local EMT's, what Katie doesn't know that Adam, the EMT, is her heartbeat.

Personally this book spoke volumes to me, my Pawpaw is my life, he's one that I speak to are see every day & have since the day I was born, and currently he is coming to his final days. He will be 97 next Saturday. When I began this book and Katie and her grandmother had an accident, all I could do was think about him and our relationship. Katie and her grandmother are like my Pawpaw and I. The only difference is that I have great parents unlike Katie.

Katie is a dreamer, especially when it comes to guys. She knows she can't get close to them, so she doesn't. That is until she meets Adam. He has been burned by his ex, and is trying to make something of himself. What he doesn't know is that he is exactly what Katie needs.

Adam is defiantly not an alpha male like in some books, he's not even the guy you had a crush on in middle school. He's just an average guy... really tall, but just a guy. What is different about him is his ability help others, and what he does for Katie is above any other character I have read so far.

This book was fabulous! I started it and couldn't put it down. It will have you thinking none stop about the people in your life, what is important, and what makes your heartbeat?

Simply put, this book surprised the heck out of me.

HEARTBEAT is told through the eyes of Katie and Adam, through dual POV. (I heart dual POV, so yay!) Katie is a sheltered woman, depending on her grandma to help her survive living in the house with her not so pleasant father. Adam is hiding in the woods, in attempts to try to escape the memories of being spurned by his first love. Oddly enough, I related to Adam more - I just loved him! Usually I prefer the female POV in similar cases, but I loved Adam here.

It's a sweet love story, bringing you back to the feelings of the first time you were in love- or even thought you were. I took notes...which are rather irrelevant once you reach the ending. Things that I questioned as being flaws were obviously not flaws. Everything had a purpose - a little breadcrumb trail leading to the ending. The ending...what to say about the ending? I see in the reviews that the author (Faith) says the book is going to be controversial. Those words are the best way to describe. It's not what I expected. I can see people being furious. I can see people being shocked. I can see people appreciating the surprise. I knew SOMETHING was coming, but I didn't know what precisely. When it all unraveled, I was surprised, curious, and sure I'd be thinking about this for some time afterwards.

Katie and her grandmother got into an accident on a wintery day. Adam was one of the paramedics who responded to the call. Then their paths crossed. There was an attraction, a definite connection. But because of each one's past, neither one wanted to acknowledge what they felt. From there, every situation, every chance, just kept slipping by. The opportunity was within sight but not within reach. From that time, I was a tortured soul as well!
When the moment finally happens, the test on their relationship continues on......God, I just wanted them to get a break from all the obstacles in front of them!
Then I'm so hopeful, finally....sunshine after the storm.....Not! No spoilers but don't at the end I was left shaking my head wondering, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED!!!

I really dug this book. I loved how intense they felt for each other. I saw a spoilery review so I knew what was going to happen on the last couple of pages. I'm kinda glad I did, because that was a MAJOR what-the-hell-just-happened moment!

That moment was so beautiful, but also made me angry. It was so heartfelt, but heart breaking. You just have to look at this book as a beautiful thing that could happen between two people and not think about them after you're done as I usually do. I remember my couples and try to imagine what their life would be like afterwards.

Thanks, Faith. Way to make me smile and cry and wanna hit something at the same time! :)

I was thinking all along while I was reading this book "hey, this has potential. It's too short, there isn't enough back story...but it's not bad."

Then, BOOM! Rug ripped out! I wasn't expecting that...at.all.

I am honestly torn on how I feel. If there was more story there...if we had more of Katie to understand. If she hadn't been so weak, I would have liked it better. I just wanted her to have some redeeming qualities. However, the end puts her story into perspective. I makes sense. I still don't know if I like it...but I get it.

What a great novel. However...THE ENDING....I am still trying to figure it all out!! Faith Sullivan did a great job bringing the characters together in this story. Katie is so emotionally abused and Adam is getting over a bad break-up. They are both emotionally damaged but still find each other.

A real strange ending. I had to read the last two chapters again to try to understand - what was the blinding light that came in through the window? Was it all a dream to be catapulted back to the beginning? Still trying to work it all out. A 3.5 easy read. Will make you think afterwards.

Unfortunately, I didn't like this book at all. I don't like the whole insta-love thing, add to that the cheesy dialogue, and some weird twist at the end that I had to have it explained to me. Definitely not finishing this series.

With a really fresh tone and writing style overall I really enjoyed this book, however I am not a fan of love at first sight and stories, which this one had BIG TIME, and that kind of put me off a little bit.

When Katie and her grandmother are in a minor car accident Adam’s ambulance is first at the scene.
Although Katie isn’t hurt, her grandmother needs checked out so the pair are taken to the hospital. Straight away both Adam and Katie feel an intense attraction to each other and want to know more, but at the same time don’t feel confident enough to make the first move. After parting at the hospital they each remember the other and hope that they will run in to each other again so that they will have another chance. However, little do they know that when that chance comes around, there is going to be more obstacles in their way than expected.

Overall I really liked Katie as a character and found her to be really relatable. Pretty shy and introverted, she had very little experience with guys so often used her imagination when she did like one to imagine they were actually together (we all do it…or maybe that’s just me…). When she first sees Adam she knows straight away that he is the guy for her and is constantly hoping that after he drops her and her grandma at the hospital, he will come back to talk to her, however things don’t quite work out that way.

Living a very sheltered life, Katie’s dad is emotionally abusive towards her, only allowing her out when he says it’s ok, and as she has a weak immune system and is unable to work, he also has total control over her phone and car. Showing Katie and her grandma very little attention, he expects them to do everything for him by the time that suits him, he refuses to let her anywhere near guys, and anyone who does show interest, he makes sure that they don’t look at her again. When it came to her dad I desperately wanted Katie to stick up for herself. I understood that she was in a situation where she relied on him for everything, and if she did stick up for herself she would lose that, but she seemed to have no drive to try and break free from him, almost accepting the way things were and just getting on with it which is something really annoyed me about her.

All the way through I desperately wanted her to do something for herself, the only reason she moved in with Adam was because her dad left her with no other choice. I wanted her to tell her dad where to stick it, find something she loved to do and then do it as for the most part she kind of came across as vulnerable and defenceless, she didn’t really seem to try for independence and was extremely naive because of that, I wanted to see her become empowered.

Adams isn’t really your typical hero. Tall and lanky with shoulder length hair he comes across as handsome but not in the typical way. For me he wasn’t a book boyfriend but was definitely the kind of guy I rooted for and wanted good things to happen to. Like Katie does with him, Adam feels an instant connection to her that he can’t really describe. Having recently been cheated on by his previous girlfriend, he isn’t looking for a relationship, but when Katie comes along nothing else matters.

The only thing I didn’t like about Adam was his willingness to give up everything for Katie so early on. I know that sounds like something I should like but I just couldn’t believe, if it came to it, he would give up his job/college for her even though he barely knew her. I completely understood his need to save her but to sacrifice everything he had worked so hard for, just for a chance that it would work with the girl he just met is crazy to me.

“You’re it for me, Katie. You’re my world now.”

The only thing I didn’t like about this book, and the main reason I only gave it 3 stars is due to the love at first sight aspect. I’ve said in reviews before that this is always a real turn off for me in books as I like some degree of realism, and for me, seeing someone and knowing straight away that they are the one, and then actually pursuing that idea, isn’t very realistic. Katie and Adam meet once and then in the weeks that follow both can’t stop thinking about the other. Due to Katie being quite a naive, sheltered character, Adam, and the idea of her being in a relationship with him seems to be the only thing good in her life as so many bad things are going on, she seems to use the idea of him as an escape from the reality that is her life. Adam on the other hand, having just moved away from everything he knows in California, he too lives a pretty lonely life and the idea of finding Katie and getting her seems to be the only light in that.

The point where Katie and Adam actually get together is the thing that really didn’t work for me. Within a day of finding each other again, she is living in his house, has lost his virginity to him…and has said those words…the words that always put me off of a book when the characters don’t really know each other…I love you, blech, I’m sorry I am just a complete an utter scheptic about these things, but although I understand Katie had no where else to go and that Adam was her only hope, most girls would try and think of some way to contribute and maybe try and look for an alternative, but when she moves in, in her mind its to stay. Also I think for both Katie and Adam, they were more in love with their idea of each other, before they actually get together, they meet once for a pretty short period of time, and then after that spend all of their time fantasing about being with the other. 30 minutes is not long enough to fall in love with someone, it just seemed like they were in love with their fantasies. Sorry to rant but this is always a thing that really gets me when it crops up in books, and I want to reiterate that I only say all of this due to my personal dislike to this aspect of the story, it is my personal opinion, but if you like stories with love at first sight you will love this one, as everything else about it was great!

She is my safe place. She is my respite from the craziness of the world.

The ending of this story really surprised me, and stumped, and confused me all at the same time. It is a bit of a cliche ending with a twist which I absolutely loved, and to some degree makes sense to the story and makes the love at first sight thing a little more bearable for me. I’m not going to give away what happens but I will say that it is a little different from what you expect and totally unexpected!

Although the love at first sight aspect of this book put me off a little, I would highly recommend this book to people who like this kind of story as overall I found it really enjoyable, and really liked the tone and writing style. I think I will be reading the second book, COME WHAT MAY, as the ending of this book really surprised me and it will be really interesting to see where the author takes this book from there.

My Thoughts:

Have you ever met someone for the first time, and felt a deep and intense connection? It happens instantly, and as you talk to that person, you can't help but think to yourself, maybe this is the person you've been waiting for your whole life. You can't explain it, but all you know is what you feel, and the more that you talk to and get to know each other, the stronger that connection grows, and confirms that you two were meant to be together. This is what occurs between the two main characters, 18 year old Katie, and 19 year old Adam when they meet. Their story is told in alternating point of views, and will leave you utterly captivated, and entranced.

Katie has lived her whole life with her controlling, domineering, verbally abusive, shrewd, and cold-hearted father. All her love, and nurturing has come from her grandmother, who tries her best to protect Katie from her father's heartless words, and actions. Katie shares a special bond with her grandmother. The two are inseparable, and look out for one another. Katie is also very close to her cousin Jen, a newlywed, with two small children, that does her best to look out for Katie. Unfortunately, Katie is an extremely introverted person, and doesn't have any friends, she's never even had a boyfriend. This is partially due to her controlling father, (he acts more like her prison warden) and her quiet personality. She lives a very lonely, and secluded life.

Ryan is 19 years old, 6'4, blond haired, blue-eyed, lanky, and a great person. He grew up in California with his parents and decided to move to Pennsylvania, when his first love, April, broke his heart. He drives an ambulance, and works with two great guys, Charlie and Tommy, who are his friends, mentors, and they look out for him. Adam attends school so that he can become a paramedic one day. He has one brother, Brian, who he is very close to. Brian often gives Adam advice, even when he doesn't want it. Brian loves Adam, wants to protect him, but it often comes off as if he is butting in to Adam's business.

Katie, and Adam meet one day, when Katie and her grandmother get into a car crash. Adam is the ambulance driver, that escorts Katie's grandmother to the hospital. Katie get's in the passenger seat, as Adam drives and instantly these two feel a deep connection. From this point on, they cannot get each other out of their minds, will continue to think about one another, and try to reconnect.

Heartbeat was such a fascinating story. It was unique, and had a crazy plot twist that I never saw coming. One of those twists that's not exactly straightforward. It will leave you with questions, and contemplations. At first, I was doubtful of Katie and Adam's connection. I thought that it was going to be a case of insta-love. However, I think there was a larger theme of fate, destiny, and soul mates in this story. Katie and Adam were both genuinely warm-hearted, caring, loyal, and struggling. They were both so lonely, and carried heavy burdens in their lives. I wanted them to both have a happily ever after, and rooted for them throughout the story to get what they both deserved. Ms. Sullivan did a great job with her characterizations! I was so angry and frustrated with the antagonists in the story, Katie's father, and Adam's co-worker, Chuck. Both were such horrible men. I really connected with the main characters and my heart hurt for them. They were so well-developed, that I felt like I knew them on a personal level.

What I appreciated most about Heartbeat was Ms. Sullivan's courage to step outside of the box. I'm tired of reading romances that have a set formula for how the plot plays out from beginning to end. I get bored with the predictability of these stories. Ms. Sullivan gave us a realistic portrayal of life. She did not take the safe approach. She took a chance, and I admire her for that. That is why I believe some readers will love her story, and some will dislike it. I for one, appreciate the refreshing, authentic, emotional, and realistic portrayal that Heartbeat. If you are tired of the monotony of a predictable story, with the typical plot "formula," I suggest you venture outside of the box, and take a chance on reading a story that is clever, touching, imaginative, and real!

My Rating:

I give Heartbeat, by Faith Sullivan, 4 Stars filled with fate, fantasies, friendship, and frenzied feelings! Read this story for a unique New Adult Contemporary Romance. You will be engaged in the story, and be desperate to find out what happens between Adam and Katie. After reading this story, who knows, maybe you'll believe in fate!

My Favorite Quotes:

~Adam

"Nothing is more enticing than my fantasy life. Living in my mind always plays out exactly how I imagine. No surprises, no disappointments. Reality is a cheap alternative." (eARC, Loc. 1073)

~Katie

"You're it for me, Katie. You're my world now. She doesn't need to say anything The kiss she gives me speaks volumes." (eARC, Loc. 1907)

I struggled a lot with this book. I kept waiting for the fairy tale to happen, but alas this one just didn't fulfill that fantasy for me. One the one hand I love my fantasy endings because well #1 I'm a girl who loves to dream about the happy ever after and #2 I view reading as an escape into another world where reality won't catch up with me and I can live in the moment and the lives of the many characters that I meet. One the other hand I applaud Faith for being realistic in that there isn't always a happy ending at the end of every story we read.

From the very beginning it's clear that Katie and Adam don't have it as easy as one would think. Katie's only ever been kissed once and that ended badly and Adam left his life as a bodyguard after he found out his fiance was cheating on him.

Katie spends her Sundays the same way every weekend with her Grandma at the movie theater. But this Sunday is different. They get into a car accident leaving the cinema parking lot. Her Grandma doesn't appear to be in the best shape so the ambulance is called. That's the first time she saw Adam. They both felt that invisible pull, but even after spending the entire ambulance ride sitting side by side they can't bring themselves to ask one another on a date and so begins the game of cat and mouse with them. Adam takes her name and phone number off her Grandmother's chart but after meeting her father with his cold persona, Adam gives up after the first phone call after her dad hangs up on him.

For Katie the only person she has in her life is her Grandma and her cousin. Her cousin moved away to be with her family, so all Katie has left is her Grandma. Katie cannot work. Since a very young age she gets sick at least once a month and no employer wants an employee who can only work three weeks out of every month. Living at home with her dad and Grandma Katie struggles to get by with no job and no where to go. As Katie's Grandmother's health begins to decline after she returns home from the hospital, Katie must face reality in that her Grandma isn't always going to be there for her. Soon after her Grandmother returns to the hospital, she is forced to go to a retirement home to be cared for where she ultimately dies.

For Adam, life has not been easy as well. His parents live far away and his brother lives three hours away. He lives in an apartment well away from the main city and only has himself to rely on. So when one of his co-workers Chuck, takes an interest in making his life hell and happens to be the nephew of the owner of the ambulance company Adam works for he must fight to keep his job. So when he ends up being at the scene when Katie's Grandmother dies, Adam tries his best to comfort her but between Chuck and Katie's father they are torn apart and Adam ends up being suspended without pay for violating company policy for obtaining access to Katie's personal information. The shining light here was when Katie's cousin slipped Adam Katie's cell phone number. So when Katie and Adam make plans to get together and meet at the park, Katie's father finds out about the attraction between Katie and Adam. But without Katie's Grandmother there, Katie's father is quick to kick her out the door. Katie turns to the one and only person she can, Adam. From here things begin their downhill spiral of events. All I can say is expect the unexpected here. Don't think you know how their story ends because believe me when it happens, you won't even see it coming.

This story is realistic and tugs at the strings of your heart on multiple occasions. I didn't know whether to feel happy for them or to cry because it was one heck of an emotional roller coaster. I do look forward to reading Come What May to find out what happens next.

Well, sometimes paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Where do I begin? Heartbeat by Faith Sullivan was totally different from the other New Adult contemporary romance books I've read. It is just full of unexpected events. I loved the story, because it is just so different from what I've read. There is your typical helpless and broken girl falls in love with the sweet and caring boy, but the story itself does not make it seem like that. I know I am getting ahead of myself here, but the ending left me shocked. I had to re-read it twice to comprehend what had just happened.

Everything he does seems to draw me in.

There's some invisible force pulling me toward this girl. I can't explain it, but I can definitely feel it.

The two main character's, Katie and Adam, meet in a very unexpected circumstances. Who would ever think that you would have an instinct attraction and connection to a paramedic? The moment they lay eyes on each other, there is an instant connection that they can't explain. I enjoyed reading from both Katie and Adam's POV, but there were times in the story that it just felt that it was a repetition from the others POV. I mean it is obvious that they are feeling the exact same connection and emotions towards each other, but I really didn't like re-reading the same thing over.

It is second nature for me to shut people out.

I liked Katie's character :). At first she does come off as being snarky, because this girl doesn't live in a perfect world. Her mother is not in her life, her father is way overprotective and obsessive with having her be in his house, and the only hope she has in her life is her grandmother. I seriously hated her father, because he is just creepy, violent, and possessive of her life. I would have loved to know what happens with Katie's mother, because we really don't know a lot about her. As the story progresses, Katie starts getting courage and being a little bit more independents. But she is just so fragile that she can't live without having someone to take care of here. I loved that she stood up to her father, but I did not like how weak her character was.

I wanted a fresh start, free from any entanglement.

Adam's character is a whole different story. I also liked his character, and I think I liked him more than Katie. At first, his character did not interest me much, but as I kept reading I found out that he is a guy that any girl would fall for. Adam is just your typical good boy-protective, caring, loving, and would jump in front of a bullet to protect the girl he loves. But of course he has a few skeleton in his closest that catch up to him in the new life he is building with Katie.

She is mine, and I am hers. It's as simple as that.

Faith Sullivan delivered a story of love between two people that have an instant connection and attraction towards each other the first moment they lay eyes on each other. But there are a lot of obstacles and situations they have to face in order to be together. Katie and Adam's story is how one guy can help a girl conquer her fears by helping her bring her heartbeat back to life. HeartBeat is just one of those books that you can sit down and read in one sitting. You will never know what to expect and the ending is just one of those 'what just happened here' moments.

First of all, I am so happy Faith offered me the chance to read this! I love visiting her blog and reading her swoons for Swoon Thursday and she always teases us with steamy swoons from her books! Ever since I couldn't wait to get my hands on them!

I really liked both Katie and Adam's characters in the story. I think Faith did a great job of presenting them and really making them both likeable characters. Katie is 18 years old, living with her father and her grandmother. Her father is overbearing and really expects to be taken care of- meals cooked, laundry done, etc. When he first sees Adam hugging Katie, he makes it very clear that she is to have nothing to do with him despite the fact he hasn't even spoken to the guy. Katie is not only young, but she is inexperienced and a bit naive. The only sexual experience she has had was with a guy she knew from high school and after saying she wasn't ready to go all the way, he dropped her off at her destination and didn't look back.

Adam is good-looking, hardworking and an all-around nice guy. He has been hurt in the past and has moved away from California in order to move on with his life. He drives an ambulance, so he works long shifts and hours and tends to go home and crash. He isn't a social butterfly, hitting up bars, grabbing drinks all the time after work.

Adam and Katie first meet after Katie and her grandmother are involved in a car accident. Her grandmother, complaining of neck pain, is picked up and brought to the ER just for precautions. Adam, of course is the ambulance driver and the two connect instantaneously. I personally felt like I could have used a bit more development with Katie and Adam's relationship. Both were clearly attracted to one another but never got the courage to make their move and kept letting the other slip through their fingers. I feel like Katie fell way too fast for Adam without really getting to know him. It almost seemed that she fell in love with the idea of him in the beginning. I really felt the same about Adam. He sees that sadness in Katie's eyes and there's something about her that makes him want to take care of her and protect her. As dedicated as he is to his work, he would make sacrifices for Katie, for the chance to truly be with her.

That was my only major issue with the novel. I felt like their relationship was just a bit hard to believe in because I really wanted to see them connecting a bit more before their relationship evolved as it did.

But, let me forewarn you. Faith doesn't not hold back on her ending. I won't say what she does, because after being really angry, I stopped and reflected. And then I thought, well played Faith Sullivan, well played. And so now I'm curious if maybe my earlier thoughts were really justified about their relationship. Maybe it was supposed to feel that way and my mind is being messed with. I don't know, regardless, the ending. Whew.

Overall, despite a few issues I thought this was a cute read and I really did enjoy the characters which is a huge thing for me. If my characters are unlikeable, I really can't get into a book. This is the first book in the Heartbeat series.

Reading the summary, you would think that Heartbeat is a typical contemporary New Adult story. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with the typical storyline of New Adult fiction (it's quickly becoming one of my favorite escapism genres), Heartbeat offered something more and I loved that. Faith Sullivan takes a huge risk with Heartbeat and I appreciate that kind of confidence and deviation from the norm.

I found Heartbeat just a little bit slow to start, and actually stopped reading for a couple of weeks, but once I picked the book back up, I found it impossible to put down. What I liked about this story (besides the risk of the ending) was all of the different elements Sullivan winds into the plot. Between the trauma of Katie's history and her home life, as well as her persistent health problems, and Adam's heartbreak over his first love gone wrong, there was a lot more to Heartbeat than I expected. Katie has a weakened immune system and gets sick very often and can't hold down a job because of her health. I have an immune deficiency and also can't work because of my recurrent infections and so I really identified with Katie. She is also shy and hesitant to even talk to Adam and that endeared her to me even more.

Besides the fact that the plot explored all of these elements, Sullivan went one step further and ended Heartbeat with a twist I never saw coming. The ending of Heartbeat reminded me of something Gayle Forman would do, and I mean that in the most flattering way. I finished the book with so many questions. There was so much emotion and I loved that Sullivan kept me guessing long after I finished the book. I actually emailed Sullivan to ask her one important thing, and she wrote me back (which was so thrilling) and gave me a clue, which prompted me to go back and re-read Heartbeat. That's something I never do and that alone speaks to the intensity of this book.

Had Heartbeat had the ending I was expecting, it probably would have been just like any other NA series. Good, but ultimately forgettable. I find that the stories start to run together, as they often have the same plot points and themes. I admire Sullivan's courage to change things up.

My one complaint about Heartbeat was how quickly Katie and Adam's relationship moves. After their initial encounter, they did not meet again for a while and each built the other up in their minds as the perfect person. When they finally do meet again the relationship moves really, really quickly. It felt like they were already committed to each other mentally before they ever met again physically. I was happy for Katie and Adam but wondered at the plausibility of two people falling in love so quickly.

However, this complaint was small in comparison to how good the story was. I immediately started book two, Come What May, and now my only complaint is that I have to wait until October to read book three, I Am Yours, the conclusion to the series. If you're a fan of NA contemporary fiction, I recommend Heartbeat.

Have you ever read a book where you want to finish it but it’s waning on you because it just seems semi adolescent, then you keep on reading anyway and then bam it smacks you in the face with something so unbelievably unexpected that now you just have to know how it’s going to end. That’s what this book did to me. I can’t give away the ending because it was the best part and if you want to know how I feel then you will definitely have to read the book.

We start the story off with Katie and her grandmother who are returning home from a movie but then the roads being as icy as they are they get into an accident. It’s all very hard on Katie but she meets a young paramedic named Adam. It’s a chance meeting but in that brief moment they feel the strongest connection to one another. It’s as if the universe is pulling them together undoubtedly. They keep having a lot of misses on seeing each other again but it’s inevitable that they will meet again.

Both being rather young but still adults, 18/19, even with that said they have a large amount of baggage, that is so different from one another but somehow they come together and help the other get through some of their issues. Their budding romance is not much detailed you just know they belong together and that’s how they feel about it. Just one look that’s all it took for them to know they were practically soul mates. To me that’s a little unrealistic but maybe it’s just because I haven’t experienced something that full on. There were stolen kisses here and there but it wasn’t really described much in the book more as if you had to use your own imagination, but it was there.

Even some of the characters seemed very juvenile to me but that’s how they were meant to be. The best part by far was the cliffhanger at the end that made you wonder what did you just finish reading. It’s like when you watch the show Lost and you think things are going one way and then it completely flipped the script on you at the end, that’s how I feel right now, but it was definitely a good thing. I’ll enjoy seeing how this story continues and if it will be flipped yet again. Crazy how some things turn out.

I really like the cover of the book, but I don’t picture the two main characters as them, it could just be my perspective but nonetheless I like the cover. Definitely has promise.

It never ceases to amaze me how books that I really don't relish for the majority of the book will sometimes redeem themselves towards the end of the book. I honestly don't know what it is that feeds this phenomenon, but it has happened so many times in the past year or two that I should no longer be surprised. But I am. And this book is one that fits this pattern completely.

For three fourths of the book, I really could have cared less about the main characters, Adam and Katie, and their relationship. I found the writing style clever since the author wrote from both perspectives, alternating between the chapters. I will say she was an expert at this style of writing. I have read other books where this literary device was used, and it was a horror! I would find myself getting lost, but not so with Faith Sullivan. Notwithstanding, I found the relationship between Adam and Katie too good to be true and much too hackneyed.

Another issue I have is the fact that Adam and Katie broke the rules. Okay, maybe they didn't do anything illegal, but they refused to acknowledge authority in favor of the love they had for each other. I am one who does no espouse the view that the end justifies the means. I was of the opinion that Adam should have followed protocol at work, and Katie should have not subversive in going to meet Adam against her father's wishes.

One other thing that bothered me was the profanity and implied sex scene. I am glad that the author did not go into detail in the bedroom, but I was actually more bothered by the profanity. However, rest assured that I did not mark down the book for either of these things per my review policy. I realize the author's target audience is college age, but it would have been nicer if Katie had kept her morals intact.

I can imagine what you might be thinking--why did I rate this book four stars? It sounds like I hated it! Actually, I did not hate it. Because of the last fourth of the book, I actually want to read the next book. Suddenly, everything made sense. While Katie and Adam may have broken some rules, those in authority over them broke laws. I don't sanction what the couple did, but the others were much more at fault. I actually wanted everything to work out! And then the abrupt ending came. I will not spoil anything for potential readers, but know that the ending will definitely leave you hanging and hungry for the sequel.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

In so conflicted about this book. I hadn't read any reviews for it when Faith emailed me asking to review it so I had no idea there was such a huge twist at the end. I really enjoyed Katie and Adam's story and then I got to the end and was like "what the hell just happened????" I was completely confused and felt like the whole story I had just read now made no sense what so ever. Luckily, I'm the kind of person that NEEDS to know everything and Faith had already sent me an of ARC of book two and without going in to it in this review, I am now a lot happier with the turn of events. But back to Heartbeat...

Adam and Katie have a brief encounter when the car Katie is travelling in, is involved in an accident and Adam turns up at the scene in the ambulance. Though they didn't spend a huge amount of time together they both felt a connection. They were drawn to each other and neither could fight it. Things weren't easy. Adam was running from his past while Katie had to put up with her awful excuse of a father. But sometimes, some things are just meant to be. And your life really can change in a heartbeat.

I liked Adam quite a lot. He's not your typical book boyfriend. He's tall, skinny, with over-long blonde hair, and he's a bit of a loner. But he was really sweet and likeable and hardworking, and he had such strong feelings for Katie that he was willing to risk his career for her! I felt so bad Katie. She sufferers from a weak immune system (as do I) and so gets sick easily and can't find work. Her Father uses this to his advantage by ruling her life and using emotional abuse as a weapon against her.

Adam and Katie's story was hard in places, with lots of struggles, but it was super cute. I loved seeing them together and there was a moment in the park that had me swooning and dreamy sighing ;) And then there was the ending . . . Other than "What the hell did I just read??" I couldn't really describe what had just happened. It was a majorly dramatic twist that I never in a million years would have expected. I was just so confused!!!!

But I am begging you not to let that put you off. Like I said, I've read book 2 Come What May so I would definitely suggest you buy both books at the same time so you can jump in to the next book. I would have given a higher rating but staying true to THIS book, the ending just didn't sit right with me. But now on to book two . . .

This book was Great and by the time i hit that ending.. WOW! Its definitely a torturous ending and I cannot wait to begin the second book. Lucky me the author has treated me to a sneak peek So keep an eye out for our second review coming soon! The author does warn you.. Its not a happy ever after ending.. Here is exactly as she puts it for us:

I feel HEARTBEAT should come with a warning label on the cover – “Get ready to have your heart ripped out by the final page.” But I’m not one to write a ‘happily ever after’ type of conclusion. And although I’m writing fiction, that kind of neatly ‘wrapped up with a pink bow’ ending doesn’t reflect reality, and quite frankly, doesn’t appeal to me.
So be warned

So back to this great book and my epically awesome thoughts on it. Gosh this book pulled emotions. I really hurt for the main character Katie. She was so torn with her life and her options. She is so strong, yet so very fragile at the same time. Oh and our Adam. Dear Adam. He is our love in this story, but he himself is vulnerable as well. Don’t be under the impression that he still isn’t swoon worthy, but he is in a far more real way. He is a real character as Katie is. Their relationship is a hard and fast one and you will see why as you read. Some points it feels like they rush into things, but trust me, you will see why just keep reading. Its worth the wait.

Katie lives with her useless abusive father and her ailing grandmother. Her grandmother is the only barrier and protection she has in life, and she is also the only reason Katie is still there.

Adam is trying to find himself. New job, finishing college, and living in a small apartment with little to no outside life Katie definitely shakes things up.

Their relationship starts off hard and only get remarkably worse.

Then the book ends and you are left mouth agape wondering what happens next. But in a GREAT way!

It really threw me and I can’t wait to keep reading as I have said.

This book is a very easy read. It is well written and wonderfully edited in my opinion. I had no difficulty understanding or picturing scenes in the story. The characters had real relatable stories and likable personalities. Nothing in this book felt like it would be imagined. It all felt like this could be anyones story and I Loved that.

Its not the ending you will expect, and the second book isn’t either. A really great read in all ways.

Heartbeat is a quick read that I was able to get through in a few hours. It is an emotional journey and a bit sad as we see two lonely characters struggle in their current lives. It is a sweet but intense book and when you get to the end you will be let wanting more.

Katie lives at home with her father and her loving Grandmother. She is fresh out of school and hasn't been able to hold a job, but not from lack of trying. She doesn’t have any real friends, only her cousin Jennifer and her Grandmother. She hasn’t had a relationship with a guy before and is not sure what to do or act around them when she sees someone she likes. I really liked Katie; she is a sweet and shy girl who is doing her best in life. She cares very deeply for her Grandmother as she has been the one constant in her life that she has always been able to rely on.

Adam is training to be a Paramedic after leaving the coast because of a bad break up. He has sworn off girls and lives the life of a hermit; he goes to school, work, sleep then the routine begins again. He doesn’t have any friends outside of work or school as he wants to focus on his career. He has a good heart too. He wasn’t the playboy type of guy and likes to be responsible. He is taking his new life very seriously, and if he gets a second chance, he is going to take it!

I was drawn into the beginning of the story, and how the characters initially met. They can see that there is a spark between them but they are both hesitant and don’t know how to proceed. After that the storyline slowed up a bit as we follow each character as they go about their lives and the difficulties they have had to face. Don’t get me wrong, it does set the story up a bit, but I was hoping for more to happen. The second half of the book is much better as the drama unfolds and the swooning begins. Both characters have hurdles to get over if they want to be together and their lives don’t run as smoothly as they hoped.

Overall I really enjoyed the book. Being able to see both POV’s helped build up the story and I like the way Faith put it all together. And that ending …… I did not see that coming!! I kept trying to flip pages to continue the story, but there was nothing!! Argh!! It bought a tear to my eye and I want to know what is going to happen now!! I have found a new fun author and I am looking forward to reading Come What May…

MY REVIEW
I was asked by the Author if I would like to read and review her e-book. Faith kindly sent me a free e-book in exchange for my honest review. I chose to read the book after reading it's blurb.
I love the cover, it gives you the idea that this book is a chick lit type of book or perhaps it could fall into the New Adult category or Coming of Age genre. I'd say the couple on the cover are good depictions of Adam and Katie. I like the straight forward clear fonts for the book title and author name.
So they book begins with a car accident, Katie and her Grandmother are in the car. One person doesn't walk away from the wreck. We then see what type of home life Katie and her grandmother have at the hands of Katie's father. Katie's father is very much in charge and hold s the family purse strings extremely tight. Initially you think the abuse if "just verbal" without realising how much verbal abuse can affect someone.
We then go on with the story from Katie's point of view, where she is checking out the paramedic guy, and imagining what a romance and a future with him would be like. Katie's father doe's not like Katie dating, she should be at home catering to his every need as her grandmother does. Katie's father does not hesitate to use underhand tactics such as removing financial support to Katie or terminating her mobile phone contract.
I really enjoyed reading this book, I began thinking I'd read a chapter or two and then I thought Just one more chapter and by the time I realised it I was at the end of the book. I like Faith Sullivan's writing style her descriptions etc make her books so easy to read and picture the imagery she is giving you too.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, loved it. Would I recommend the book? Yes, I have already recommended the book to my mum and my teen daughter, this book is a story that in my opinion would be read and loved by a wide age range. Would I read a BK#2? I'd like to read a bk#2. I'd like to know more about the characters I met in Bk#1. Would I read other books by Faith Sullivan? I would certainly check out any book by Faith Sullivan closely with a view to reading them.
