Piper Madden used to be an Ace Harpy Hunter, but after the death of her brother, she'll do anything to leave that life behind. She flees to the fringe underground zone called the Rift to live out her exile on her own terms.

But the authoritarian Elder Corporation isn't about to let one of their best assets slip through the cracks. Piper is drawn back into the fray on a contract basis to combat a rising Harpy insurgence. As she struggles through her grief, she's caught between her old life in Central and her new, confusing existence in the Rift.

With the president of Elder Corp asking Piper to spy on his sister, navigating the surprisingly passive strategies of the Rift, and a strange friendship with the mysterious Asher, Piper's days are filled with more questions than answers.

Then, a chance encounter leaves Piper privy to a dangerous resistance plot, and as she and Asher team up in an effort to unravel the truth, the secrets they uncover beneath the ancient walls of the dead city will spark their world into a grand-scale war.

🌙 Review: Flight by Lindsay Leggett

🗡 Update (03/23/26)

I’ll find you again. I promise. No matter what they do to us, no matter where they take us... I will find you.❞

──── ☾ ✦ ────

✦ I finished reading Flight with that bittersweet feeling of having found a truly intriguing concept that seems to have lost its way. It’s hard to find stories with this specific premise, and I confess I went into the narrative with sky-high expectations, mostly because I don’t remember reading anything quite like it before. However, the experience was marked by a constant sense of disconnection—not from the universe itself, but from the way it’s presented to us.

✦ The first thing that grabs your attention—and what kept me going despite the hurdles—are Piper Madden and Asher Owen. They have that magnetism of protagonists who promise so much. Piper, with her defensive stance, and Asher, with his heavy mystery, are the core of what the text tries to be. The issue is that, as the pages turn, you’re left with the distinct impression that we’re only scratching the surface of who they really are. I wanted to dive into their motivations and understand the layers that justify their actions, but the writing keeps everything at a very shallow level, almost as if there were too much of a rush to get somewhere without building the foundation first.

✦ This rush reflects in the very flow of the writing. At many points, it feels like information was simply "dumped" onto the page. There’s a lack of explanation to help us ground ourselves in what’s actually happening. A good dystopia needs solid world-building for us to feel the stakes, but here, the text fails to create that logical connection. I found myself confused in several parts, trying to figure out if what I was reading was a direct consequence of what came before or just a random event thrown in for shock value.

✦ The book's structure also adds to the confusion. The prologue gave me the idea that the story would follow a retrospective path, where the character would tell how they reached that breaking point. However, the progression seems to suggest a cycle of reunion that never quite explains itself. This lack of clarity regarding the timeline and the purpose of the scenes makes the reading exhausting at times, because we spend more time trying to decode the story’s assembly than actually living the plot.

✦ It’s sad to realize that the potential for Flight was massive. The core idea is original and had everything it needed to be a breathtaking read if there had been more care with the depth and the way events are tied together. In the end, what remains is an interesting setting inhabited by characters I would have loved to truly know, but who ended up trapped in an execution that doesn't do justice to the curiosity sparked at the start. You're left thinking "what this book could have been" if it didn't feel so fragmented.

✦ I hope this more honest take helps balance the expectations of anyone planning to read it! It really was a journey of highs and lows for me. 🤎✨

Note: Just a reminder that this is only my opinion; don't skip it if the synopsis or other reviews have piqued your curiosity.

⋅˚₊‧ ୨ 𝒫𝓇𝑒-𝓇𝑒𝒶𝒹 ୧ ‧₊ I’m starting this book feeling genuinely curious about how its premise will unfold — an ex-hunter trying to escape her past, an authoritarian corporation unwilling to let her go, and the threat of a war quietly building in the background. I’m hoping to connect with the story through the protagonist’s grief, the character dynamics, or the tense, dystopian atmosphere the synopsis suggests. I’ll share my thoughts once I finish. ⚔️

I was intrigued by Flight right from reading the blurb and, after checking out the short interlude 'Case 501' and some of the vlogs on the book's launch website, Flight queue jumped right to the top of my TBR pile.

After an intense prologue, the book starts with Piper living in a beautifully described dystopian underground city as the radioactive skies outside are patrolled by legions of Harpies; a type of winged-human with mutant regenerative abilities. At first the premise seems like a simple case of good vs evil, that is until you learn about the sinister 'Elder Corp' (the human city's law enforcing and protection body) and the bickering family that head its various factions.

Leggett is an excellent writer and the novel's heroine, Piper (a Harpie Hunter previously employed by the Corp) is a fascinating character. She often reacts to the book's gritty events in a hard-nosed way but the first person perspective gives the reader a real insight into the intense vulnerability within. Piper has suffered greatly through the mysterious events prior to the book and it's the slow unravelling of these events, as well as the way in which Piper deals with them, that is the novel's greatest strength.

Wow, it got going at about 40% and became super awesome!! Review in the next few days!

FULL REVIEW:

For my Pre read thoughts and reasons for rating please visit my blog, From the Shadows I Review

Okay, where to start. This book for me is the ultimate slow burner. It took me a week to actually get off chapter one. I’d pick it up, I’d put it down. I wasn’t feeling it and I REALLY wanted to! So I decided to take it on a chapter by chapter basis, a little here, a little there. Load it up and read it on the PC when I wasn’t busy with blog stuff and then it happened. I got it, it all made sense. At about 40% I hit my stride. I was hooked. Sat here on my computer chair just falling in love with Piper and Asher and I was all for joining the revolt (DOWN WITH THE CORP!!) . Now I’d like to point out the writing was stunning throughout, I think it’s one of those awkward, ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ moments that I couldn’t get into this at first. Now we’ve addressed that, let’s move on. As I said the writing is beautiful. Lindsay Leggett paints a wonderful tale of falling in love. Now normally when it comes to the romance aspect of books I prefer that it takes a back seat but with this I was backing the leads and hoping they could have the fairy tale. Once I’d got over my whole “I can’t read you!!” crisis, the pages seemed to melt into each other and I have to say the actual plot of the book felt so unique and I definitely want more of it.

Piper – Piper is our lead character. She’s actually kick-arse! I absolutely love how she has the guts to stand up and be counted but still have the vulnerability that comes with losing her brother David (my brother’s called David... does she want him?). She has a strength that is rarely seen in Dystopian/PNR type books and I salute her!

Asher – He made the book for me. I guessed early on what he was hiding but no matter! He excited me. He brought the book to life and it was as he became more integral to the plot that I came out of my slump. I love how he was mysterious but not a complete doofus. I mean some characters try to be one thing but it just doesn’t translate to that on the page. No such issue here.

Grier – Another woman who isn’t afraid to tear someone apart given the opportunity. She’s feisty and I appreciate the loyalty that she came to show. She reminds me of my best friend (Highest compliment in the world! My bestie is just incredible!!) and that has never happened in a book before. So well done on that!! It made me happy.

Overall, once I’d got going this is a sublime story. It’s original, well thought out, the premise is something I want more of. Piper and Asher had some serious chemistry going on *fans self*! I’m sad they can’t have couple name though!! *sulks* Okay, going wildly off topic because I’m sleepy. This is one of those books where you think “why isn’t this a book everyone’s talking about?” I’ve read a few of those recently actually. Also I have no words for that ending. I mean... wow, I was blown away. Heck I think it’s one of the best endings I’ve read this year!! I did not see that! And I’m getting excited just thinking of it. I think this is a good place to end this before I turn into a fangirling wreck...

I'd like to thank the author, Lindsay Leggett, for giving a copy of this book in exchange for my review.

I thought this book was pretty interesting. I really liked the characters, and the world that the author invented was pretty original, what with the combination of paranormal and dystopian elements. These two genres mixed pretty seamlessly with romance and mystery to create a fairly unique and interesting book.

I really liked the main character, Piper. She was strong, smart, and witty. I didn't get annoyed at her very often, although I had a few things figured out by the time she came around to the right conclusions. She went through some really traumatic events, but she's not completely broken, and when things affect her and make her weak, it's later made clear why they do. I'm happy to say that I never once thought she made a poor decision, and that is a very rare thing in books.

Asher was very intriguing, as well. At first he seems like a typical male lead, even though he's really anything but. He's confident, but he's also very sweet, and he's fighting against practically the whole world just to be happy. He's a very sympathetic character, and I really liked him. I thought he and Piper went quite well together.

As for the side characters, I thought Sandy and Grier were great, and I loved the support that Shelley gave to Piper, as her best friend. Myra is an intriguing character, since it still isn't clear exactly what side she is on, so I definitely give the author credit for successfully writing a character who isn't all black and white.

The plot itself was interesting. The book starts off right in the middle of the action, and then goes into a flashback. This means that the whole time I was reading, I wanted to know how the beginning of the book happened, so there was a lot of tension. I did guess a few of the twists, and I found the main villain a bit one-dimensional at times, however it can be understood why mostly everyone in the book acts the way they do, and that shows great skill from the author. I also liked the dystopian aspect, with the big corporation basically being the government, and people living underground for their own protection. Leggett mixed that in seamlessly with angel-like harpies to create a book that blends multiple genres fairly well, and it helped make the story more intriguing.

In short, I'm happy I read this book. It was a good story, with many different elements coming together to make it wholly unique. I really liked Piper and Ash, and even though this book didn't really get going until the halfway mark, I can't wait to see what happens next. The sequel is going to be very, very good.

I must mention before I write my review that I was given a copy of this book by the author, however, this is my honest opinion.

This was a beautifully written book. I can't express enough how much I love the way Lindsay Leggett uses language. The world she creates is vivid and convincing. It's a brilliant and clever premise that I wish I'd thought of! The characters are well rounded and have depth. In fact, Asher is more than well rounded, he's incredibly crush-worthy!

I felt like I was left hanging at the end, though. Presumably there is another instalment to come because it feels like the story is far from over. I'm trying not to spoil too much here, but it wasn't the ending I wanted for Asher and Piper after all they'd been through. I'm looking forward to seeing that rectified in another book soon!

Amendement: Because I can't get this damn book out of my head siince I read it weeks and weeks ago, I have decided that I need to give it another star. It seems only fair for a book that won't leave you, right?

You can read this and many other reviews on my YA book blog The White Unicorn!

Guys, this book was epic. As epic as your favorite video game or your favorite adventure movie. In fact that whole time I was reading it I was thinking "this would be an awesome comic book." It just has that vibe to it. But in all honesty I don't really like to read comic books and so this novel was the perfect compromise for me! Leggett has created a world with heavy layers of intrigue that will leave you wondering what the hell is going on, while giving you enough info to keep you interested.

Have you ever read a book about Harpys? Yeah, me either, but now that I've got a taste, I'm hooked! Heck, Harpys should be the new vampires if you ask me. Leggett's version of these winged human/creator things is awesome. They are creepy and dangerous and flesh eating. What more could you want from a threat to your well being?

Not only were the Harpys awesome, but so was the world building. Ichton was a city that you could feel and touch and taste. It was dark and suffocating in ways that were easy to imagine. And the Corp building was just as strange. And when you left the dome of the underground, the world outside kept you on edge as well. In a way it was those things that gave it the video game feel that I came to love! The details on how The Corp worked were also on their A game.

But on top of video game like world building and Harpys, we also get some awesome, strong, kick ass characters that you can't help but root for. Sure you don't know who to trust half the time, but these people will keep you on your toes!

Piper is a brilliant narrator for this story. She's got so much going on in her head, as well as a really strong personality. On the other hand she's completely broken after the loss of her brother. It's her interactions with the people around her that really make you take note of who she is. There's new partners, old friends and old flames as well as mysterious dark haired boys! The whole cast that surrounds Piper are fantastic. I'm not going to tell you much about them, because I think that it's better to go in and watch her meet them and reconnect with them like I did. But trust me, they are all wonderful.

Romance has it's place in the story as well, but what I loved about this one is that it doesn't take away from the story in any way, shape or form. It actually adds to every little thing about the book! It's a well rounded, character driven romance that totally works.

So, what's the final verdict? You need to read this one. It's got so many awesome things going for it, and it delivers on each and every one of those things! This is another Indie that has blown me out of the water!

REVIEW

Flight takes place in a world polluted and unlivable due to radiation. Humans are living underground, or if they are made of money, in zones where the air is clean. Our MC is Piper Madden, she was born with a type of blood/gene that only Hunters have. Hunters are given the job to track down Harpies and kill them. Harpies are creatures who have evolved over the years and feed on humans.

The story starts off with the Prologue telling us that Piper and her love interest, Asher, are trapped in a burning room. We don't know what's going on other than they've been given something that will cause them to forget each other and they know it's happening. When chapter one begins it's clear that Piper has no memory of Asher, even when she runs into him on the street they have no memories of each other. The rest of the time we spend playing catch up with Piper as she's given one crazy revelation after another. Nothing is as it seems!

I have to admit the book started off a little confusing and slow for me but by halfway through I had found my groove and rolled right on through to the end. I had never read a book about Harpies so the idea was original to me and I thought Lindsay did a good job of developing them. The characters are well developed and their interactions come across as believable. Asher is smoking hot and has the whole bad boy exterior with a mushy sensitive center. You can feel the chemistry between him and Piper and it kills me that no one will leave them alone so they can be with each other!

Although I liked the book there was some stuff that bothered me. I didn't really know until the end of the book whether it was taking place in the present or in the past. At the end of the prologue Piper makes it seem like she's going to start telling us the story from the beginning (meaning before the fire and what led up to them being there) but as I continued reading there were things that made me think it was happening in the present. Then there was the whole fact that Piper knew she couldn't remember things from before her brothers death, but she NEVER questioned it! I mean we don't even realize that she doesn't remember anything until about halfway through the book. When she admits her lack of memory that's when things start to really roll and she starts to suspect something isn't right.

Overall though the book was a good read and I have high hopes for the second installment.

I found out about this book due to the book blitz hosted by Xpresso Reads, and I’m so glad I did! Not only was I intrigued by the gorgeous cover, but the blurb truly caught my attention with the mention of harpies. So you can imagine my excitement when I won a copy of it in a giveaway!

I do tend to approach indie / self-published books with a bit of trepidation, but my fears were not manifested with Flight — thank goodness! What I got was a fun, vivid story. I loved how visual this book was, and how clearly I was able to picture the people and the surroundings. It was so much fun reading about how Piper was a badass with fighting, weaponry, and harpy hunting!

I enjoyed the way that many of the relationships grew, changed, or were just further explained as the story went on. I liked Piper as a person and as a character. Some of the plot “surprises” were pretty predictable, in my opinion, but that didn’t really stop me from enjoying the story. And while I liked this book, there were a few things that I wanted more of:

1. I wanted a lot more explanation of how they came to be in the current situation. (What made the air above ground unbreatheable?)
2. I wanted to know the origin of the harpies! Where did they come from? How were they created? (They’re different from other harpies I’ve seen in games and stuff.)
3. I wanted more story in general. I think it was on the short side.

So, I’m hoping that these things will be rectified with the second book in the series. In any case, this was quite an enjoyable read, and I definitely recommend it!

I received a copy of this book as part of the GoodReads Giveaway. I received this book awhile ago. The author sent me a signed and personalized book. I like that.

I felt the author did a great job in developing the character of the lead heroine(Piper) of the story. I felt a real emotional investment in her and was concerned about what would happen to her. The other characters were developed enough to explain their actions and reactions in the story. There was plenty of action and there could have been more. There could have been more hunting and fight scenes, but I felt the author was trying to keep the plot moving based on the character of Piper. All the story was from her point of view.

The one thing I that I noticed about this story was the similarity to all the vampire books out there. Okay, I have not read that many vampire books, the plot was similar, girl loves Harpy, Harpy loves girl, they can't be together according to the rules of society.

The story is not just a love story. There is the intrigue of who can Piper trust. Can she trust the Corp? the Harpy? her friends? This part will keep you guessing as to what the truth is and who is telling it.

The story did not have the happy fairy tale ending that you were hoping for the lead character. It ended with enough unfinished business to start a sequel.

Regardless of whether there is more to the story, there is a complete story here that will keep you entertained. I fould the book to eay to read and it kept me reading. A good summer read.

I enjoyed the book. Well Done

I stumbled on this book while hunting Amazon, and was sucked in from the first page. I literally put everything on hold to finish this book.
Her MC has a very strong voice and relatable personality. You are rooting for her the whole time. Lindsay Leggett also builds a vivid world that is unforgettable. I have a slim list of Indie authors that I will follow to the ends of the planet. She is one of them; I am dying to get my hands on the sequel.
I felt so strongly about it that I gifted it to a couple friends. If you are looking for something that has originality that in my mind can only be compared to THE HUNGER GAMES—with creatures that give you goosebumps (Good and bad), this is a story for you.
Piper is not your typical heroine, Lindsay doesn’t just tell us every other page that she is strong—Piper shows us. Not only is Piper awesome but there is an entire cast of supporting characters that you will fall in love with too—even if you’re secretly suspicious of everyone.
There was no point in the book were I skipped pages because nothing was happening. And although Piper is damaged from the loss of her brother I never had a moment where I wanted to slap all her angst away.
The ending is one that manages to leave you pining for more—and not in the bad cliff-hanger way. All around I believe that Lindsay Leggett is one of the best syfy/fantasy Indie authors I have found.

4.5 Stars. It took me a while to settle in because there is a lot of info unloaded on you at once (as well as some really big questions) but once I did I was impressed with the world and characters the author built. This is a complex, dystopian story that manages to stand on its own. The romance is...epic. I was going to cut someone at one point towards the end but the ending turned out to not be as bad as it looked. This is not a standalone book but I didn't find it to be a cliffhanger because the author worked in enough info for us to have an idea of where things are headed though the path there is murky.
